1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to use - Poor Customer Service
I purchased Corel Draw 9.0 to make maps, text, and graphics. I find it hard to use, and incompatible with most of the commercial printers I use.

I have not been impressed with their customer service to correct problems inherent in my software. It's been 36 hours since I've tried to resolve why my software won't mirror, and I still don't have an answer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!
I was taking a course in Computer Graphics and was introduced to Painter through the course. I had always used Adobe Photoshop so I had no idea what Painter would be like.

Fo those people who are not familair with computer graphics programs, Painter makes it easy to learn. You can learn so many things with just playing around with the various tools. Painter makes it easy for anyone to learn how to make a graphic. This is one of the best programs I have worked with over an extended period of time! Thanks so much Corel for making a product worth buying!

5-0 out of 5 stars why you have to upgrade..
Today, a creative professional can only notice how mature the graphics software industry has become, new software are offering more and more features that are using more and more computer resources, without being adding real marginal benefits. New upgrades are only to keep the products alive, on the expense of making them more cumbresome.

Painter 8 is a different story altogether!
Corel® has made a great effort to make this upgrade of a previously clunky yet powerful product, a much more versatile, standardised and user-friendly juggernault. Gone are the days where you have to hopelessly search among dozens of panels for a particular brush, style or method. A slick bar at the top dynamically changes according to the tool you're using, where you set the size, opacity, curviness..etc.
Another thing that was greatly improved is the process of choosing the brush (that used to be very annoying with the old selective dimming). The brush selector is tucked at the upper right part of the screen (also in that slick bar,) in a much more logical and standardised way.
One also has the feeling that painter 8 was given something similar to the Macormedia® MX treatment, where the palettes can be customised into different panels and the layout saved according to the project.
The mixer panel IS useful, and is very consistant with the philosophy of this new painter release: the small things that make your work faster and stress-free. The os X over all performance is much snappier, not to mention the beefed-up photoshop compatibility, and o! have i mentioned that you get both a windows and a mac version with the license price ?

In short, If you thought painter was too eccentric and boggy for you, this is the upgrade you've been waiting for. Its new slick interface made me thank God that Corel® had taken the torch from Metacreation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Near Perfect Program for creating Art
It took me a few months to break down and buy this. I had Painter Classic and Painter 7, and I liked them, but they weren't what I really wanted.

Painter 8 was exactly what I was looking for. The color mixer is wonderful! I can finally get the colors I want quickly and easily. The new interface is so intuitive and not at all intrusive like Painter 7's. The new brushes are brushes I want and use. Painter 7 had a lot of the same brushes with few variations organized in a haphazard fashion.

If you enjoy the look of natural media, and you enjoy the flexiblility and forgivability of digital media, Painter 8 is for you. I am so glad I bought it. I just wish I had purchased it earlier. It is a big improvement over 7.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mea Culpa!
I wrote a hasty review of Painter 8 after only one day of haphazard dabbling with the program, and I have to now eat my words. I've spent a few more days working with the program, and it's a much better upgrade than my initial impressions (and review)indicated.

What I didn't remember is that this is not merely an upgrade but a REVISION of the program. One must come to this without the preconceptions learned from using previous iterations of this fine product. The lack of responsiveness in the brush or pen line thickness variations was due to my not having recorded a stroke in the stroke pressure setup panel...something I had not had to do before, as I did this in the Wacom Tablet stroke pressure setup panel (under Preferences) and that had sufficed to generate satisfying results in Painter 6 and 7. (I haven't found whether the Painter 8 documentation mentions the necessity of setting up one's stroke pressure preferences anew in the program, but it is necessary to achieve satisfactory mark-making sensitivity.)

As I get more acclimated to the new interface I have to admit that Painter 8 is pretty darn nifty. I don't know if this is such a dramatic upgrade from Painter 7--aside from the drastically improved interface--but it is worthy enough for me to withdraw my earlier cavils and give this program 5 Stars.

Depending on your computer's processing power, some stroke rendering can be slow, but this was true of earlier versions of Painter, as well. This is an attribute of the complex computations required to render the particular effect, and not a unique defect with this version of the program.

Anyone who already uses Painter will love the streamlined interface. Whether the new features are sufficient to warrant an upgrade--the new interface aside--must lie within the judgement of each Painter user. For those new to the program...go, buy, use, ENJOY.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Upgrade...so far.
Let me say that I love PAINTER...it's my favorite computer graphics program. PHOTOSHOP is more powerful for image editing, but for creating "natural" art on the computer, PAINTER blows PHOTOSHOP away. (My other favorite program is Creature House's little known gem of a vector drawing program EXPRESSION. It allows for "natural" looking media effects in a vector environment; imagine PAINTER as a vector program!)

However, after one day of playing with PAINTER 8, I am somewhat disappointed. It's redesigned interface is fine, an improvement over the old clutter, although, once having got used to it, the old interface was intuitive enough and it's "clutter" factor lessened with use. Beyond the snazzy new interface, though, I'm finding that the new brushes seem less responsive and in some cases slower to "draw" than in the two previous versions of PAINTER I've used, 6 and 7. My favorite pen and ink drawing tool, the "Scratchboard" tool, is far less sensitive than in previous iterations of this program, and even after setting it's line thickness to vary according to the pressure I place on the drawing tablet, it hardly approaches the smooth, natural look and feel of old.

Also, the Liquid Ink brushes seem much slower to "draw," and the Impasto effects seem not to always work, or, at least, they do not seem to work with every tool, which they formerly could.

Admittedly, I've only used the new version for one day, and I've just dabbled; perhaps in time I'll learn how to achieve in PAINTER 8 the responsiveness I'm used to from previous versions. Also, perhaps the next incremental upgrade will improve the performance such that Painter 8 will not feel "buggy."

I love the program; I'm disappointed in what seems almost a step back in the main point of the program...the natural performance and feel of "painting" on the computer. I may find that I open PAINTER 7 as often (or more so) than this upgrade...until I can discover what I'm doing wrong or Corel can fine-tune the responsiveness and sensitivity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Textures,,YES!
Having recently reviewed a companion product from Alien skin, I was thoroughly familiar with the suite of Alien Skin Programs.

Eye Candy 5 Textures loads up in a flash, and was up and running as soon as I launched Photoshop CS.

The newest offering from Alien Skin is really just one of a three part series of effects programs. The others are Eye Candy 5 Nature, and the soon to be released Eye Candy 5 Impact.

There are perhaps dozens of texture creation programs out there, including the one built in to Photoshop. So why do we need another one, you might ask?

Well, the answer is contained in the Eye Candy 5 Textures CD.
This Effects Plug-In contains a total of 10 texture groups, with a total of over 200 presets available for immediate use.

If you are a user that regularly needs to go searching for various textures to place into your artwork, you will absolutely love this program.

And a great built in feature with Eye Candy 5 Textures is that every filter has a seamless tile option that really gives the user the ultimate power to create as they see fit.

On to the filter groups:There are 10 major texture groups:Animal Fur, Brick Wall,Diamond Plate, Marble, Reptile Skin,Stone Wall, Swirl, Texture Noise, Weave, and Wood.

Located in each of these groups are the menu controls, and presets that bring the real power to this program.

The presets are all located in a left hand box within the main menu window.
The controls are on sliders, and control everything from the variations to the color, and many many other controls for each specific filter group. And I found most of these custom controls to be fairly intuitive, and straight forward.

In addition to these controls, there is a button bar with buttons at the top of this window that brings up entire new sets of additional controls, like lighting direction, settings, etc.
And in addition to all of the preset effects, and your own creations, you also have the option to save any custom presets that you have personally designed.

So, like any true Photoshop effects junkie, I jumped in with both feet.
I created a new file (a small one @ 72 PPI) to experiment with. Now, I realize that I will probably be using this program only on much larger images, but this image was built to play with, and play I did.

The first new texture group is aptly titled "Fur"(can you guess what it creates?).
Immediately I was scrolling through the myriad of preset effects made to resemble all types of realistic animal fur..Way cool stuff.

I then jumped to the new "Brick Wall"filter, and was again having a great idea; of fun just experimenting with all of the great effects that were possible.

But then I switched to the New "Diamond Plate" filter, and was really asking myself questions like "where can you use this on my next project"?These are all just wonderful effects, and it is obvious that Alien Skin has done their homework with this entire plug-in.
I "textured" my way through Marble, Reptile Skin, and Stone Wall, and loved most of what I saw.Deciding right then and there that I will be filing away these great textures for future use when the right project comes along.

So, all in all without any hesitation, I love this program. It loads up fast, runs fast, and has some of the best textures that I have ever used. And it even runs now in a 16 bit mode as well.Alien Skin 5 Textures contains numerous improvements in the user interface such as a new "Show Original" button, and an improved online help system that really works wonderful. There are other nice touches added like integrating Photoshop style keyboard shortcuts, and unlimited undo's to make every user smile.

Alien Skin 5 Textures is an amazingly powerful program, and one that I will be telling all of my friends about for a while.Alien Skin has continued to produce great, user friendly effects programs, and this one gets my vote for the best fun in a box available. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars illegal is illegal
I must take exception to the only review shown for corel draw 9 - in particular the mention to save money buy just buying the upgrade as no key is necessary. Software manufacturers are already losing millions of dollars due to piracy. If you are a serious computer user, purchase the original at some point then upgrade as necessary. Anyone who expects a program to be totally bug free is not being realistic. If you feel that way go back to the typewriter!

2-0 out of 5 stars I am thinking of going to Adobe?
I have never used any graphic software and only new to computers also (1 1/2 yrs.)so keep this in mind. I have been a photographer for a long time and also paint. CorelDraw9.0. I purchased the upgrade as I had a limited version 7.0. The 9.0 is better, but photopaint is cumbersome, awkward and the text that is provided is confusing and poorly organized. There is also a text (Libraries Catalog) that list (visual representation) all of the clip art and fonts. That is good, however, it is also poorly organized. Finding things is time consuming and an eye sore. You would expect to find information on the program installation and customazainton at the begining of the text, but it is near the end of the book and is not clearly referenced in the index. The text jumps around too much, and constantly tells you about features but then says "this is discussed in Chapter 8" and you are in chapter 2, for example. You get lost. The "Draw" program appears to be better. I am not experienced enough to comment on this and have not used it too much. It is also a bit confusuing, but much less. The program uses plenty of memory. I have 128mb and it chokes or locks sometimes (windows 98). Two more points. If you need tech support you will be calling Canada. International phone rates apply. There is no e mail support. I was directed to news groups. There support on the web is a joke. Also, save money. The UPGRADE INSTALLS WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS COREL. FACT!. Nor do you need to enter the key. Read the box. There is no mention to the fact that a previous version is needed. You can save hundreds of dollars. I guess this is cheating. But I have little respect for most software manufactures. So if you feel I am wrong and imoral (or stealing) in regard to this than by all means buy the full version. There is a second patch out for the program, the first was 12+ mb, the second is a wopping 30+ mb. $10.00 to have them send a cd for their mistakes. Outrageous. So you need to download 32mb. At 28.8kbs (~6 min per meg) Well over 3 hours. That is all. ... Read more
