4-0 out of 5 stars For serious illustrators only
First I would like to explain why I gave it four stars instead of five...it does have a couple bugs that need to be fixed.
Overall, if you are a serious computer artist this program is what you will want. I horsed around with several free trial downloads from various companies and only Adobe has what a professional needs. All other illustrating programs, including Jasc's Paint Shop Pro, are only great if you're looking for a computer toy.
Adobe Illustrator does take some learning though. Don't expect to load the program up and be able to use all of it's features. But once you do learn how to properly use all the tools, you will be glad you bought this and nothing else.
Go to the Adobe website and download their free 30 day trial.

2-0 out of 5 stars Adobe Illustrator CS
I just installed Illustrator CS today and have discovered several bugs. One file became so unmanageable, I had to start completely over (I was unable to assign a color and stroke to a shape). I tried to save a brush, but the settings I tried again and again to save would not stick, so that my efforts were useless. I have used Adobe products for years and was one of the earliest users of Illustrator. I have always loved Adobe's reliability and thought that the ease of use justified the high price. After all this is a professional product. This time Adobe failed to get the bugs out, and I can't think why anyone would put up with so much frustration. I recommend you don't buy this version.

3-0 out of 5 stars Major Bugs Remain
I have been using Illustrator professionally since version 6 was cutting edge. I like the product and understand how to use the various tools, how to place images, and basically WHY the thing costs $500. This is a marginal upgrade over 10 in many areas, a downgrade in terms of back-compatability, and a major upgrade in terms of additional filters and effects. Overall, about what you would expect for a version upgrade. Not nearly as major as the difference between 8 and 9, but substantial enough to warrant the upgrade price.
But there are some major bugs that have been in place for months now. They have been noted in the Adobe forums, with no response from Adobe or indication that they have any intention of repairing them. I recommend that you don't buy this product until Adobe releases their next upgrade.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Product. HORRIBLE support.
This may be one of the better vector graphic programs, but does not appear to have been tested. I will update this review more as I use the program more. But today is day one, and it has one MAJOR bug already.
You know how much Photoshop CS costs. And you know how much Illustrator CS costs.
So imagine buying the full Illustrator CS. You install it. And it will not open ANY JPEG pictures taken by certain SONY DIGITAL CAMERAS. The program just bombs out every time. To work around this bug you have to open the pix in any other program, like Photoshop CS, and resave them. Nor will it load TIFFs from these SONY cameras. But every other program will including Adobe Photoshop. So when I call support, with a product that is only 1 hour old, they want a credit card number in case they decide to charge me $39.
I dunno. I hope these CS products last me a long time. Because I don't think I'll buy more Adobe. They charge way too much money to treat customers like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy upgrade if you upgrade to PS CS.
Illustartor is a great program, it has a steep learning curve but once you start to get over it you can produce great pro illustrations. Few programs compare and one of them is defiently not Paint Shop Pro 8. Whenever I see someone compare a Adobe product to that crappy, slow, dumbed down program, i feel compelled to write back.

I am waiting for my copy of CS to arrive in the mail, for now I use Illustrator 10. The features in that fill my needs and beyond. I won't go on about it. The biggest selling point for me is its seemless intergration with other Adobe products. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Fine for Design, Bad for Production
Having been a working user since Illustrator 5.0, I've seen a great deal of changes in this fine design and production program. Adobe was in my opinion at their pinnacle with release 8.0. Version 9 added transparency effect, but it seemed to drag on the OS (9.x), and one huge change that was unnoticed by most designers put a huge thorn in the side of those working in print or production: Adobe changed their post script management in the exporting of most files to be ripped from true post script, to .pdf. This caused a myriad of problems in the rip world, where the "new and improved" .eps format would not rip, or caused serious rip problems, with images needed embedding (doubling or tripling the final file size), or other work arounds. Hence, many of us never used verion 9.0.

Now comes version 10. This version has the beautiful aqua interface, is much faster than version 9, and a lot of designers will love it for that. Have the problems been fixed? Well, no. As a matter of fact, some are worse. .eps files saved out of 10 as version 8.0 (to hopefully rip better) causes placed files to appear as fragmented, embedded, unnamed, files, causing a total re-design. Files with transparency often rip as solid blocks, or have Pantone colors fall out when used as transparency. While one could argue this is a problem with the rip, it's not the best business ethic to let your customers (production users) have to deal with these hassles, when they should have been ironed out between Adobe and other (rip) software manufacturers. Another feature that appeared in 9.0 is still useless: Automated (batching) actions. Illustrator 10 wants to name every single file the same as the file used in the writing of the action. Making what could be a huge, huge time saver for production works, totally useless. There are also network security issues, where OSX wants to hide AI 10 files when saved to a Windows based server. Adobe also missed the boat in that the save window doesn't allow anything other than the power user window in OSX, and won't allow collumn width adustments. Again, this may all be Apple, (or Windows). But I say iron these issues out before releasing the software and charging users for it, and letting them deal with the headaches.

But before I create a huge laundry list of things wrong with the program, Illustrator does deserve some praise. It's the best looking version to date, that isn't even close. It also makes jumping into basic design easier than ever. And it has many, many web friendly features. Most any designer out there working on basic (or complex) logos, designs and illustrations will find AI 10, for OSX to be the slickest version to date. So you're likely to see a lot of 5-star reviews from those users.

Bottom line: If you're a designer working in OSX, this is a much faster, and nicer version than 9. But a lot of prepress and production workers who use Illustrator day in and day out for print export and rip are going to find the program still has several problems that make it very difficult to use in a production environment. And as that was once Adobe and Illustrator's bread and butter, it leaves me having to give this somewhat negative review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Software but....with Xp. Yuk!!
I have been a Graphic Designer for 6 years and I have been using Illustrator the whole time. The program has been upgraded with some good new features, although Corel (which is evil) has Illustrator beat with the Envelope feature. Illustrator is EXTREMELY glitchy with XP. I find that it works well with 2000 and even 98. This is the program to get if you are in the field of Graphic Art, I have been teaching it for 3 years as well and new users really enjoy this Program. Once you get the basics down you can go many places with Illustrator.

4-0 out of 5 stars can be better
Many people struggle when it comes to which software draw application to buy. Should it be Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDRAW, Expression,Deneba, etc. Well, they are ALL GOOD. Its up to you you to be GOOD. With each one of them you can create basically almost anything you want if you have creativity. Each one of them has some advantages over each (its up to you to research on the product own web site what it does..compatibility with other applications, etc..). For example, currently Illustrator is probably most widely used in USA because ot its ease and compactness with Photoshop. But, macromedia has recently released Freehand MX which also is smooth with photoshop, if not better than illustrator (Currently Adobe just released Illustrator CS [nov 2003]. My suggestion is that if you are mainly thinking of web than buy Frehand MX (best if you buy it included in the whole Macromedia package) and if you are mainly into print than buy Illustrator CS (you save if you buy it in Adobe suite CS which includes Photoshop CS, Indesign..). Also, I have found some other drawing programs from Europe that are in my opinion better for my taste, but remember also that most people dont need these expensive programs and much cheaper drawing programs can suffice most individuals (except pros; even pros can make great stuf with cheaper programs). Hopefully I did not create more confusion in deciding which software to buy. OK, if you want to be in a "click" buy Illustrator CS, but if you want to be "cool" buy Freehand MX or any other similar quality digi drawing program such as CorelDRAW or Sarajevo L'Express.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Busoni of vector editors?
The composer Federico Busoni had a habit of writing music that was difficult to execute, technically. He didn't do so because particular musical ideas demanded it; his aim was merely to prevent amateurs from playing his works. I was somewhat reminded of him coming to Adobe Illustrator 10 after the intuitive logic of Xara X. Even though I am acquainted with the complex Adobe-style interface through Photoshop 7, Illustrator again has me convinced that Adobe program-designers go out of their way to make things deliberately esoteric. Now, that would be understandable and forgivable if the complex interface were necessitated by a wealth of options not offered by other vector programs. But though Illustrator 10 does offer a few extra's not available in Xara X (and no doubt the new Illustrator CS has yet a few more), none of these are essential and some are no more than fairly lame gimmicks ('lens flare', for instance). Other tools such as the scissors, the knife, or the magic wand may seem handy at first, but soon they reveal themselves to be just extra buttons for functions that Xara performs equally well simply using the line or shape tools. Of course, Illustrator being touted as the 'industry standard' for vector editing, you may want to pay the exorbitant price of this program merely to boost your self-confidence and credibility as a graphic artist. Some peer pressure may do the rest - according to some, if you don't use Illustrator, you're no more than a wannabee... But don't you believe them! I have yet to come across the first piece of vector art that was done in Illustrator and would be impossible to do in Xara. In fact, Xara is every bit as powerful as Illustrator, yet is generally faster, much easier to use, very visually oriented, with an uncluttered, cleverly thought out interface and lots of straightforward drag-and-drop functions. So if you define yourself as a graphic artist through your work rather than through your 'professional' (i.e. expensive) tools, I would advise you to save yourself a lot of money, a lot of time learning a needlessly complicated interface, and go for Xara X. After all, who ever heard of Busoni?

4-0 out of 5 stars For Artists Only Plus Buggy
If you are thinking of using this program without having any art ability, I have one word for you: DON'T. Unlike Photoshop, which can be used by people with a variety of image needs, with Illustrator you better already be an artist. I am an artist and this program is taking everything I've got. I find it extremely difficult. This is not to say that it is more or less difficult than any other drawing based art program, just that it is hard. I've always been a better painter than a drawer so that could well be bedeviling me in learning it too. What lowers the grade to a 4 though is that Illustrator 10 seems to have a lot of bugs when you use it on Windows XP, which is what I'm using. I notice another reviewer here catalogs all the problems it presents on a Mac so I caution you that installing it on Windows may not solve those problems. Perhaps Adobe just rushed it a bit prematurely into production. If you go to the Adobe website and then to the Illustrator User Forums, you can see all the computer bugs that users are running into with Illustrator 10. That can give you a better idea than I ever could about some of the problems you will need to work around after installation... The reason I went with this program is that it is the one that is the industry standard. It is also the drawing program taught in most colleges' commercial art departments. Apparently some advanced drawers also use a program called Freehand so you might want to read about that one as well before taking the plunge with Illustrator 10. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing product with unbelievable low price
I am new in vector drawing. I've tried Adobe illustrator first, I cannot quite understand why I have to go through so much trouble to do simple things like draw a line. I decided to give coreldraw a try. Now I am hooked. Coreldraw shows that you can get into vector drawing and still keep your common sense. Coreldraw is so easy to use! After a few months, I can do very sophisticated drawing now.

By buying CorelPainter 8 and CorelDraw 12 Upgrade, I've spend only a fraction of the cost of any Adobe product to get EVERYTHING I need for computer graphics at professional level. Adobe products maybe powerful, but compare to what I got from corel, they cannot justify their unreasonable price tags. Also I think Adobe illustrator and photoshop have unnecessarily complicated and cumbersome interfaces, whoever designed them should be fired!

5-0 out of 5 stars In response to objection about the PhotoPaint
I am upgrading from version 10, and version 10 already has a way to make your default units in Photopaint Pixels.

There is also one user that has reviewed this three times with a bad review. C'mon, now.

Just press Ctrl-J and change the default units to pixels. Simple.

One of the greatest things about CorelDraw is the active help you can get from expert users at http://www.egroups.com/community/cdug

If you had posted this question there, we would have shown you how to do this 3 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good bang for the buck...
I am an amature photographer and painter. And I love using photoshop too. But I can't afford photoshop. Adobe makes great products but they are overpriced. This is why I got Corel Graphics Suite. It supports all the plug-in's for photoshop, does pretty much everything photoshop and illustrator can and all for a cheaper price. If you are just starting out with computer graphics this is a good alternative to Adobe. Or if you are a student with little or no money and need a legit image suite this is the way to go.

3-0 out of 5 stars Photo-Paint 10 User looking for Upgrade
I have a 5MP DSC camera and use Photo-Paint 10 for all my digital photo work. I am continually irritated by the inability to set default values for the ruler. To edit EVERY photo using pixels, the process is Tools : Options : Units : Pixels ; OK - FIVE clicks for EVERY photo. I thought this would have been fixed in Photo-Paint 12 since the issue is continually brought up in Support. I downloaded the trial version of CorelDraw 12 from corel.com and alas it has not been fixed. I would pay the upgrade price for this feature alone.

2-0 out of 5 stars crash city
I upgraded from v10 hoping to see a lot of new features. CorelDraw in itself is a very valuable program - I have used it for years.

However v12 does crash and it does crash often, and for this reason alone it is extremely dissapointing. I don't think it was worth the upgrade, there just aren't enough new useful features to offset the frequent crashing / memory leak problems.

Basically what you get is some spiffy modernized graphics and icons, no significant improvement to the UI. The word on the street has it that there are some new features however I haven't explored enough to find them. I suppose the masking is a bit better. They still haven't added a curve smoothing option to the path tool in photopaint, this was a feature I was hoping I would see in v12. ... Read more

Included human and animal models come ready for you to start designing and posing immediately. You can click-and-drag to interactively sculpt faces, pose body parts, or create various ethnic varieties. For those who require finer control, full body morphs, facial expression morphs, and bone rigging are easily accessible for any figure. All features and models are provided in a natural 3D environment for realistic depth, lighting and shadowing on any figure in any pose. You can pose any figure by clicking and dragging a body part. With Document Display Styles you can view and design your figure in silhouette, outline, wireframe, textured, and more. The program lets you manipulate individual body parts, including the full body, facial expressions and fully articulated hands. It also allows you to interactively sculpt and design figures in real time, including the body and facial expressions. Object-level Collision Detection helps with posing and avoids collisions when animating.

What's New in Poser 6?
  • New Figures
Poser 6 introduces James and Jessi, new figures with amazing realism to bring a new level of photorealstic content to your artwork. Both figures accurately depict the human form, have lifelike skin textures, and full morph target sets to design your own custom figures with facial expressions. Also included are new boy and girl children figures, Ben and Kate, who complete the new Poser family. The new Poser figures come with photorealistic texture maps, full body morphs, facial expression morphs and are fully rigged for posing.
  • More Content
Poser's Content Paradisenow includes a host of top content providers, to bring you a diverse range of Poser 6 models, textures, poses, character packs, utilities, and free stuff. A redesigned interface makes finding Poser content faster and easier than ever before.
  • Enhanced UI
Poser's innovative UI is centered on a productive room-based environment. Individual Pose, Setup, Materials, Hair, and Cloth rooms provide easy feature access for each step in the creative process. In addition to rooms, Poser uses floating palettes and windows. You can customize your Poser workspace by hiding/displaying and relocating controls anywhere you like. You can even save up to nine different screen configurations for the entire Poser workspace.
  • Shadow Catching
Poser 6 introduces several new features to support artists in rendering more true to life shadow effects. For example the NEW Shadow Catcher feature enables you to separate shadows from their underlying surface, and put them virtually anywhere. These new features make image composition and integrating 3D figures into graphic design easier.
  • New Toon Outlines
The New Toon Outline feature uses post-processing during rendering to draw an outline around the edges of cartoon images. Poser 6 offers customizable outline styles, enabling you to further personalize your cartoon shading look. Add a distinctive style to any cartoon imagery for comics. Now you have the choice to add outlines to any cartoon imagery you create with Poser. This feature's effect is most dramatic when combined with a cartoon shader node. Configurable Cartoon Shading preview styles allow you to approximate the final render results as you work.
  • OpenGL
OpenGL delivers accelerated performance when previewing anything from cartoon to photorealistic 3D figures. Now you can display vivid textures and lighting in real-time when designing figures. You can even render high resolution images using the OpenGL Preview renderer. There are accelerated previews for your 3D scenes, so you can see vivid textures and lighting in real-time. This feature works with all Document Display Styles, including wireframe, cartoon, and more. You can render out your 3D scene display with the OpenGL Preview renderer, and easily switch between SreeD Software and OpenGL Hardware for scene previews--which means you can maximize your system's resources and spend your time creating rather than waiting.
  • New Ambient Occlusion
Ambient Occlusion makes figures seem as though they are in the natural lighting environment of the real world. Ambient Occlusion is available on every light to create accurate soft shadow effects, thus giving scenes a new degree of realism. The new Ambient Occlusion shader node makes figures and objects appear as though they are in a natural lighting environment. Ambient Occlusion darkens surfaces within a scene whose exposure to light is blocked by other objects. This effect uses raytracing to calculate the degree to which other objects within a scene occlude the ambient light of a surface at a given point. Surfaces with more occlusion will be rendered as darker than surfaces with little or no occlusion. You can set Ambient Occlusion lighting for all objects, or select lighting effects focused on specific parts of your scene.

Poser 6's light controls allow you to add and individually configure different types of light sources in your Poser scene. When these light configuration options are combined with Poser 6's powerful rendering tools, the lighting possibilities are unlimited.
  • Bone Rigging

You can even create Inverse Kinematics (IK) chains. Inverse Kinematics (IK) delivers natural character motion by modeling the hierarchical interactions of bones and joints, so that when you move a hand the arm naturally follows.

  • OpenGL Preview
New OpenGL hardware acceleration offers improved performance with figure Posing and Preview renders. Easily switch between SreeD Software and OpenGL. Hardware rendering for scene previews means you can maximize your system's resources and spend your time creating rather than waiting.

5-0 out of 5 stars This looks good...
I have poser 5 and it is a wonderful program. It has great, easily, customizable human figures, and a small learning curve. When I baught it I thought there could be nothing better for an aspiring 3d guy (for lack of a better term), but then came poser 6. It includes all new figures poses, and more. It also has shadow catching and ambient occlusion. Another great feature is it has a rendered depth of feild feature, which adds a whole new depth of realism to your images. Poser 6 is a little on the expensive side, so if it's a little too much, buy Poser 5 which is a truly exquisite program. I think poser 6 will be wonderful, and I can't wait to buy it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not order from J&R Music and Computer World
J&R Music and Computer World (via Amazon) sent me a confirmation email with the exact product name that I ordered. Instead of sending me the correct item they sent me a similar item of lesser value. They say they can not help customers via email. They *may* offer me a "exchange/refund" if I contact them again via telephone. J&R Music and Computer World will not promise to send me the item I paid for. They will not promise to exchange the wrong item or refund my money.
