Amazon.com Review

Autodesk's AutoCAD is without a doubt the industry standard for computerdrafting. Its leaner sibling, AutoCAD LT, offers many of the same features asthe full version at a fraction of the cost. And while LT 2002 does include a fewof the important innovations of AutoCAD 2002, its capabilities are stillstrictly limited to 2-D drawing.

Compatibility is one of the key advantages of LT 2002. It is 100 percentDWG-compatible with AutoCAD 2000-, 2000i-, and 2002-based products, allowing youto open, edit, and exchange drawing files. The software featuresbackward-compatibility as well, letting you save files for use with AutoCAD LT98 and 97 and AutoCAD 13 and 14. This comes in extremely handy for peoplesharing files with others who haven't upgraded recently. The DWF fileformat--basically a PDF file for drawings introduced in the 2000 version--isimproved, too, with support for more raster image formats and higherresolutions.

Several Web publishing tools are included, which means users receive morecollaboration options. eTransmit, for example, puts drawings you currently haveopen--with all associated files and x-refs--into a single set so that users canedit the file on another machine. This ensures that every necessary component ofa file is present without the user having to individually select all relatedfiles. Users can then post the transmitted set on the Internet or send it as anattachment via e-mail. Additional Web publishing enhancements, such as templatesand themes, have been improved, giving users the ability to create Web sitesusing LT drawing files with no Web development knowledge.

One feature that did find its way into LT from the full 2002 version isassociative dimensioning. If you modify a geometric object in a drawing, associative dimensioning automatically adjusts all dimensions associated withthat object. This eliminates the need to manually update or re-create dimensionsfor changes in geometry. All in all, this is a very useful feature. However, itdoes make it more difficult for users who have grown accustomed to manuallyforcing dimensions of objects in their drawings.

AutoCAD LT 2002 is a solid choice if you're looking for a lower-cost option andhave limited CAD needs. 100 percent compatibility and plenty of valuablefeatures make it a worthwhile purchase. It does offer considerably less than thefull-featured version, missing all 3-D drawing capabilities and no provisionsfor network licensing or license management features. But if you can livewithout these options, LT 2002 is certainly the way to go. --JoshuaGoldman

5-0 out of 5 stars For the right audience this is a perfect tool
There are limitations to spreadsheets for performing advanced statistics, differential equations and graphing.Yes, if you're clever with common spreadsheet applications, such as Excel, you can work wonders. However it's time consuming, clumsy after a certain point, and often requires third-party add-ins.MathCAD, on the other hand, allows you to perform complex operations with a simple drag and drop from its extensive library of built in operators and functions.

I use it for computer systems capacity planning and performance analysis, general statistical analysis and probability in project planning and control. In that respect I haven't begun to tap into the power of this program because, especially calculus and matrix operations. However, what I do use it for gives me an idea of the time savings that results from building equations by dragging the symbols onto the screen, adding the variables and seeing the results immediately. The graphing function is as easy (and powerful). What I can do in MathCAD in less than a minute would take hours to set up in Excel, for example.

What I particularly like about MathCAD is the document management capabilities that are built in, the fact that it seamlessly integrates with Microsoft Office applications (you can drag your equations and graphs into a Word document, for example, with the same ease as an Excel table or graphic), and ability to save your documents as HTML.

Another strong point about MathCAD is the large collection of files and electronic books that are freely available from the publisher's website. They serve as a clearinghouse and solution sharing point for MathCAD users and the solutions that are available cover every business, scientific and technical discipline. An example that is in my technical area of expertise is the Closed queuing network analysis solution that came in handy when I was analyzing batch processing optimization.

If you work with equations and have reached the limits of your spreadsheet application you may find MathCAD to be a great value. You'll certainly become more efficient and productive with it.You'll also find that the learning curve is relatively flat because the user interface is similar to Microsoft's Office family of products. You'll probably wonder how you got along without the ability to build equations with drag and drop shortly after you begin using it.Technical support is responsive, the documentation is clear and complete, and the publisher's web site provides a wealth of add-ons and other tools. ... Amazon.com Review

CorelDRAW is a leading professional vector graphics application. Now in version 11, it continues to be full of innovative new tools and facilities, though learning how to use them all takes time and patience. Several of the improvements in the new version are designed to ease the drawing process by introducing tools to overcome specific drawing problems.

For example, there are now new "three-point" tools for drawing rectangles, ellipses, and curves. With each you click to fix the first point, stretch out to define an axis or baseline, and click again to complete the object. This is a very useful alternative to the conventional way of drawing these figures, though the original tools are still there, too.

Other new tools include Polyline and Pen. Polyline enables you to create lines and objects segment by segment, where each segment can be straight or curved. Pen is similar to the pen tool in Adobe Photoshop, offering a quick and easy way to create Bezier curves.

Other handy new features include the ability to snap one object to another and to simplify shapes and extract the outline of one from another when they overlap. The Align and Distribute dialog is now "modeless," making it easier to work with when lining up objects.

CorelDRAW 11 introduces Symbols to its repertoire, too. These are not the same as the symbol fonts that the program has offered for many years, but rather a way of saving and reusing drawn elements more efficiently than copying and pasting them. The advantage of symbols is that you can reuse "instances" of them, while only one description is stored in the drawing file. This saves considerable file space, which is particularly important when drawing Web graphics.

Quite a few of the improvements in CorelDRAW 11 help when designing for the Internet. There's much improved support for industry-standard file types, such as SVG and compressed SVG and the ability to include symbols in PDF files, again a space saver. You can also preserve layers in your drawing when exporting to Adobe Photoshop and Corel Photo-Paint and choose to import only specific pages from a PDF.

If you're willing to put in the time and effort required to make the most of this program, CorelDRAW 11.0 will reward you with a sophisticated, complex, and extremely useful design application. --Simon Williams ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CorelDraw 11 Rocks!
I don't know what the other users were smoking when they wrote their reviews. I use CorelDraw 11 extensively with complex multi-layered projects mixing massive bitmap files, text, and vector graphics and it works flawlessly! There is no better program for layout and graphics. I've used CorelDraw since Version 3 and each version keeps getting better (except for version 6 which had some severe file-bloat problems). Of course, you do have to have the horsepower to run it right: I have an AMD XP2600 CPU with 1 GB of RAM and an NVidia 128 MB graphics card running Windows 2000 Professional. However, I run it at work on a 1.5 GHz Intel Pentium 4 with 512 MB of RAM and Windows 2000 Professional and it runs fine, too, if a bit slower.

1-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, buggy and not better as Corel 10
Some say Corel 11 has less bugs then the version before. Do not belive that lie! I am using it since 7 days and it has many bugs:
- it still hangs on sometimes
- there is a copy and paste bug. If u have a file open for a while Corel "forgets" how to copy. U can try but it doesnt work in Corel (all other programs still can copy - only in Corel can't).
- I am using a 1.8 Ghz machine and it seems to be mutch too slow!
Its usefull, but don't spend money for upgrading to corel 11!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Disaster
From the uninspiring package (I wonder if this package was designed with Adobe Illustrator just like CorelDRAW 10's was?) to the clunky performance, CorelDRAW 11 just doesn't impress. Sure it's got lots of clipart, but this does not make up for the poor text handling, humungous file sizes, and the ever-so-slow speed (redraw times are particulary snail-like). Plus, it crashes a little too much for my liking.

Bottom line is, industry-standard Adobe still does everything better than Corel, so why bother adopting a new learning curve for inferior results? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MathCAD 8 Pro - still worth hunting for !
Paulo wrote an excellent review. This version is still worth locating and using as it is the last version that works with a freely distributable viewer: MathCAD Explorer (last rev was 8.02 I believe).

MCD files created under MathCAD 8 were usable under the MathCAD 8.+ Explorer, as was interaction with the MathCAD entries. The MCD worksheet simply can't be saved from the MCAD Explorer.

If you can find it and are eligible, the MathCAD 8.0 Pro Student Edition contained:
- drawing program (from Intergraph) which allowed for import of drawings whose dimension variables could be part of the MathCAD worksheets.
- Engineering bonus CD
- Science bonus CD
- Professional enhancements including additional built-in variables, programming capabilitieis, file import/export handling

More than enough function and features to challenge High School and advanced Middle School students. Being able to take advantage of numerical solutions and/or analytic ones, depending upon the situation is a wonderful lesson for practicing numerical analysts.

Cheers, Mark@7tronics

4-0 out of 5 stars I expected more flexibility
Mathsoft's staff has improved the software, compared with version 7, adding some sort of programming facilities, and graphics presentation.

For those who are not familiar with Mathcad, I address someimportant properties of the software:

1) Direct graphing and formulaediting: One can plot graphs and calculate formulas (even non-lineardifferencial equations, using numerical method), as goes writing in theworksheet.

2) Import data from from several formats and analizethem.

3) Plot 2D and 3D graphs. One can rotate 3D graphs with the aid ofthe mouse.

4) Solve simbolic equations. Solve formulas using eithercontinous or discrete numerical treatement.

5) Make a professionaldocument, with texts wrapping around graphs and pictures.

6) Savedocuments in HTML format directly.

For those who are already familiarwith Mathcad, I address some drawbacks that should be improved:

1)Subscript in formulas: After subscripting, one has to step left , using thearrow key, to continue editing the formula, otherwise the edition willcontinue in subscript index.

2) Mathsoft should add some sort ofcompiling capabilities, to the software, so one could run a stand aloneversion of the worksheet. I personaly think this is the most importantfeature should to be added on. One can do an excelent job, building up ahugh worksheet, but cannot show the effect of online processing of new dataon other computers, unless Mathcad of same version is already installed init.

3) Data manipulation is still tedious, as were in Mathcad 2. A buildin spreadsheet is essential to provide direct data editing.

4) Textfacilities should provide paragraph justification, and text propertiesmanipulation from the taskbar menu.

5) A simpler way to input data. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The CorelDRAW Graphics Suite combines three heavyweight graphics tools--CorelDRAW 11, Photo-Paint 11, and R.A.V.E. 2--which can be used individually or together. Now in version 11, the CorelDRAW Suite shows Corel still has plenty of ideas on how to improve the effectiveness and ease-of-use of these major applications.

For example, in CorelDRAW there are now new "three-point" tools for drawing rectangles, ellipses, and curves. With each, you click to fix the first point, stretch out to define an axis or baseline, and click again to complete the object. The new Polyline tool enables you to create lines and objects segment by segment, where each segment can be straight or curved. The Pen tool offers a quick way to create Bezier curves.

CorelDRAW 11 introduces Symbols to its repertoire, too, so you can save and reuse drawing elements in a clip-board-style library. Using symbols saves considerable file space, which can be particularly important when drawing Web graphics.

Corel Photo-Paint 11 is to bitmap editing what CorelDRAW is to vector drawing. In many ways a competitor to Adobe Photoshop, the new version of Photo-Paint includes more improvements for Web artists. You can now slice images into a number of small parts to aid quick downloads and create rollovers for buttons and image maps, so they appear differently when pointed to or clicked. The program also supports JPEG 2000 files, so you can save your images in this new high-compression format.

The Cut-out masking tool helps extract foreground images from picture files and create objects from them that you can incorporate into other pictures. While not as comprehensive as Corel's own stand-alone KnockOut product, it's a useful tool in its own right. Red-eye removal from portrait photos can be a nuisance, but the new red-eye removal tool replaces red pixels with their greyscale equivalents. Various other effects within Photo-Paint add to its usefulness--things like enhanced lens flare, improved bevels, and reworked image stitching for panoramic photos.

The third part of the suite is Corel R.A.V.E., a Macromedia Flash animation creator. This module now uses a very similar interface to CorelDRAW and incorporates most of the same tools. It also offers tools and effects specific to its animation role, such as tweening of text on a path and of the program's predefined library objects, Perfect Shapes. Export of graphics to Macromedia Flash has been improved and includes the ability to export text as text rather than curves, which saves considerable file space.

Overall, the latest version of Corel Graphics Suite shows the company has once again proven itself to be a real player in the graphic design space. --Simon Williams ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and Powerful
Corel Graphics Suite 11 is by far the best product for illustration and digital imaging that I have used yet. These full featured applications are powerful and robust enough to allow graphics professionals to be as creative as they need without being bogged down with hidden commands, or unfriendly tools. The user interface is intuitive and smart giving creative flexibility and yet is not overwhelming to new users.

This new version of Graphics Suite has many new features that allow the graphic artist to go the extra mile in their design, and I have found that power and ease of the applications allows me to be far more productive then with competing products.

If you are new to Corel you will enjoy how easy it can be to use these applications. You will also enjoy the ability to make many different types of graphics, such as vector and raster images as well as fully interactive Flash animations.

If you are already familiar with Corel you will appreciate the new features and the added power that Corel has put into these applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars great price upgrade from corel8
Wow! What a great price [$$$] after rebate. I was relieved to learn upgrade from corel 8 was ok. In fact I didn't even have the serial# because it was long lost. I called customer support. After giving me the serial# to load the Corel suite 11 asked me to fax or email a picture of my Corel Draw 8 disk. Although the box seems to say version8 or higher, I got the impression proof of any Corel draw version was OK to upgrade from. I was satisfied with Corel 8 but It was giving me problems after upgrading from pIII450 win98 to new P4 3gig winxp pro. My print options were all Greek and program crashed (Locked up) often. It seemed logical to just upgrade to version 11. I have had none of the old problems so far. I will enjoy some of the new features but really feel the money well spent just to have the same features solid and reliable. Corel is the best program available for the money. Especially for someone like me who has the wide range of graphic needs. That is to say the paint/photo graphic needs to the high tolerance Corel draw cadd options. I really use the ability to work in full scale and print tiled pages on banner paper. Although I rarely print longer than six feet before concern the printer paper will go out of alignment. If you don't have a previous version of Corel draw to upgrade from you may want to buy corel8 for [$$$].

3-0 out of 5 stars The song remains the same
In the last ten years I've purchased Corel 3,4,5,6,and 7. I distinctly remember every version being slow and buggy. You'd buy the software and then have to phone Corel until they'd agree to send you software patches to fix the problems. But since there were never any complete solutions, I kept upgrading to newer versions, hoping maybe eventually, they would work out all the problems.
I lost my hope around corel 7, but recently decided to upgrade again. After all, they've had at least 5 years to design better, faster routines. Guess what - Corel 11 is even slower than Corel 7. Now it seems to be popular these days to blame all speed problems on insufficient RAM. But I don't buy it. Corel 11 is really not that much different than Corel 7, and I think 5 years of development should give massive speed improvements. I also think that it is very arrogant for software developers to build their systems a way that forces the end user to upgrade his computer.
The other issue of bugginess is also still with us. Immediately after getting the software, I was informed that I should get the servicepak in order to overcome some of the bugs.
The entire thing is an exact replay of my experience ten years ago.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the software - otherwise I wouldn't have upgraded so many times. But the software should be perfect before the company ships it and ... get ready to laugh at me ... the software should be capable of running quickly on a DX-100 486 with 32 megs of Ram under Win95. That was what I was using in 1996 and Corel 7 still ran faster than today's version on a Pentium. Ha Ha Ha

4-0 out of 5 stars Another "legitimate" consumer user, whatever that means
I'm not sure what Keith W. means by a legitimate user, but I've been using Corel since version 6. I am also very comfortable with the Adobe products, and Corel is still my application of choice. I find the Corel suite not only intuitive and quick to learn, but also much more suited to a user who wants to customize processes and create unique scripts.

3-0 out of 5 stars IMPROVED.....BUT.....
"CorelDraw Graphics Suite 11 Upgrade" spots an improved interface. All the major components: CorelDraw 11, PhotoPaint 11, and R.A.V.E. 2 have become easier to use, while at the same time donning new graphics capabilities. Still, experienced versatile users who have tried comparable software, will tell you that this software needs to grab a few more items in order to match both "Adobe Illustrator" and "Macromedia FreeHand".
In CorelDraw, the most significant additions are new drawing tools, symbols, and shaping tools; (all of which provide extra flexibility for drawing elements). PhotoPaint received a red-eye removal brush, improved Web capabilities, and a new cutout tool. The R.A.V.E. or Flash animator's text manipulating strength has increased. It also boasts of a library docker for symbols.
However, the fact is that either the equivalent of these enhancements or their superiors are present in the latest "Adobe Illustrator" and "Macromedia FreeHand" suites. Any user who has tested these software will vindicate me. Again, this "CorelDraw Graphics Suite 11" runs slower than both 'Illustrator' and 'FreeHand', which is the main reason why versatile users regard it as being less polished. Another fact about this Corel software is that its hunger for memory is voracious. Don't rely on the recommended 128MB of RAM that is written on its packet. If your PC's RAM is less than 512MB, this software may compel you to buy extra RAM modules; or else, you may not enjoy the luxury of having more than two other Applications open while running it. If you do, your PC may resort to a snail's speed after some minutes, in order to carry on with its rudimentary tasks.
But apart from these few negative issues, this software will serve you well. It is not bad at all! ... Read more
