5-0 out of 5 stars WHICH OPERATING SYSTEMS?????
I know it will not run on win98 or ME,somebody better change that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Product is good, the customer service at amazon is lousy!!
I bought autocad lt 2005 from It arrived when it was supposed to. I downloaded the rebate form from and upon reading it, it said that the invoice must have the serial number on it. My invoice from amazon has everything except the serial number on it.

After 3 e-mail attempts to amazon to get an invoice with the serial number on it, I have given up. The response on all 3 was the rebate is between you and autocad, contact autocad. I contacted autocad and they said they can't accept an invoice with out the serial number. So, if you think you are going to get a rebate after you buy from amazon, think again. There is no telephone number listed on the website, so you can't actually talk to anyone, All you can do is exchange e-mails with someone in a foreign country who doesn't understand much english.

If I had it to do over again, I would buy this from another retailer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some nice upgraded features, but major headaches added
A little known aspect of this product is the fact that Autodesk will only allow LT to plot one drawing at a time (except for dwf files). This is a MAJOR hinderance. The layer command is slow and sheetsets and fields are unable to be created. The old LT versions were basically 3d disabled, now the drafting features are being removed/disabled as well. If your going to spend the money get autocad full or look for another product, we are very unhappy with this change, especially how it was not very well publicized and we didn't find out until we purchased enough for multiple offices and had it installed. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Strong technology, lousy support
Considering how much talent Adobe puts into product development, it amazes me how user-hostile their service is.I bought CS2 last week and cannot get Adobe Bridge to start. This is a critical problem since Canon RAW files (.CR2) from my 20D are not visible in the File/Open box.My fiancee spent three hours on the phone to Seattle today to try to get help, and when she finally got through, they wouldn't deal with her since she was not the registered user, even though she had the licence information. There is no information on Adobe's site regarding Bridge bugs.I don't know if this is also a problem on the Mac, but if you are an XP user, HOLD OFF ON CS2 until Adobe fixes the production bugs in its Bridge software, and gets a better handle on both its arrogance and quality control.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Features but Still a Flawed License Manager
My experience with Photoshop CS2 has been limited thus far, but it does appear to offer some nice new features, particularly to the enhancement in Adobe Camera Raw, the Spot Healing Tool, and possibly Adobe Bridge as I explore it more. A major drawback to me personally, is that changes have been made in the user interface that conflict with the old Extensis PhotoTools plug-in, namely in that the PhotoBars component which provides a customizable toolbar ehancement will no longer work.Although Extensis no longer supports PhotoTools and deleted the PhotoTools component when Photoshop 6 was issued, I have been involved in maintaining PhotoBars so that it would work on the PC platform in Photoshop versions 6, 7, and CS.The customizable toolbars added a wonderful extension of usability to the Photoshop interface, and the loss of that capability due to changes made in Photoshop CS2 is very unfortunate.

Of great interest to me was to see how Adobe has changed License Management, i.e., product activation in Photoshop CS2.While the license manager does appear greatly improved in terms of not being as likely to have errant reactivations arise due to use of the System Restore utility in Windows XP, hardware changes, etc., it still manifests the same critical flaw as existed in Photoshop CS.Namely, Adobe has not provided any grace period at all for the instances when reactivation is prompted. So, if you are someone perhaps travelling with a laptop computer and are ever at a remote location where telephone or internet access is not readily available, you are at risk of fully losing use of Photoshop CS2 in the event of an errant reactivation prompt arising. The odds of this occurring do appear greatly reduced due to changes made in the triggers affecting a reactivation, but the risk is there nonetheless.Adobe should have implemented a short-term grace period of continued use following a prompt for reactivation, so that a user would not unexpectedly be faced with denied access at a critical time. The only alternative in this situation is to have a backup copy of an earlier version of Photoshop installed for use until Photoshop CS2 can be reactivated or, to employ the use of software hacks that defeat the license manager. The preferred solution would be for Adobe to provide an update that incorporates a reactivation grace period, but they seem to be ignoring the problem.I had hoped that the new Transfer Activation process in Photoshop CS2 might allow a user to export activation state data to removable media which, if an errant reactivation prompt arose, could be used to re-establish the valid activation state on the PC.Unfortunately, the Tranfer Activation process requires an internet connection and thus is again useless if one is at a remote location.

With regard to the 1st review posted here, installation of Photoshop CS2 is permitted to two computers under the normal single-user license. The only restriction defined in the license is that these 2 installations cannot be used concurrently. The license specifically reads as follows:

"2.4 Portable or Home Computer Use. The primary user of the Computer on which the Software is installed may install a second copy of the Software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable Computer or a Computer located at his or her home, provided the Software on the portable or home Computer is not used at the same time as the Software on the primary Computer."

1-0 out of 5 stars support leaves a great deal to be desired
Unfortunately Adobe with its Photoshop product has made it increasingly difficult to install or to use on more than one computer. Like many people I have a desktop PC and a laptop. With CS1 I could install on both. Now I have to buy 2 copies at $1400 to have the program on both PCs. Even worse trying to install CS2 on a machine that already has Photoshop CS 1 installed, the install program can't find the version already installed in the default directory and so it fails. After 40 minutes with level one tech support I still was unable to install theCS2 upgrade. Calling back to talk to level 2 tech support I was told I would have to pay $39 for a support call.
This is the last time I purchase Photoshop. Adobe has gotten too big and too arrogant for me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, Versatile, Sophisticated Business Diagramming
Visio has always been an excellent solution for technical diagramming. Version 2003 is no exception and improves upon its predecessor with support for the web and integration with other Office applications. The program still lacks certain elements of Microsoft Office which I feel concerned about. Users are able to import Native Auto CAD drawings directly into Visio, and use the Visio tools to further customize and edit drawings to their hearts content. You can create custom stencils save them and share with other Visio users over a corporate network. You can export diagrams as a webpage so that users who don't have Visio installed locally on their machine can View diagrams through web browser at different resolutions with ease. The program enables IT Adminstrators to create Diagrams for Active Directory role outs for Windows 2000 Server and Server 2003. SQL Server or other third party database products such as Oracle and IBM DB2 can use the Visio functionality to outline a companies storage of data through active digrams that automate how data is stored and used. You can create simple project management task, and also export other Visio digrams to PowerPoint and further edit within PowerPoint or Word.Other features include searching for stencils online in the program, which makes it easy for you to find that particular diagram. Visio still lacks certain elements such as native support for WordArt. Overall, this upgrade is a must have for existing Visio 2000 or 5.0 users, but some 2002 users might not see any need for some of the functionality and might wait first to see if their diagramming and network infrastructure needs demand the new functionality and technology that Visio 2003 has to offer. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work
This is my first experiance with any Roxio product.I bought it without doing research but on the recommendation of the store manager. He said that Roxio makes wonderful products.

Are you kidding me!The menus are combersome and confusing. The whole program disappears after clicking on a menu option only to reappear a full minute later.

I did like the pan and animated menu features and was able to create one movie.I then started on a second movie using some of the more advanced features but this will not run smoothly. The preview window doesn't synchronize with the timeline indicator. The video preview occasionally is not shown and the audio is choppy and locks into a loop.

This is unusable.A total waste of money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stay away - not worth half price.
I have owned and updated this product since before it was bought by Roxio. Now it has been bought out by Sonic. The newest version 7.5 of the product has become bloated and useless, with a built in Napster client as the core feature. Prior version user upgrade prices are handled unethically - The first email they sent me said offered upgrade for $99.99 no exceptions for prior customers (less than a week after I upgraded to version 7.0 which also sent me through the roof - an upgrade that recent should be free), then eventually they sent email offering a lower price but with a 48 hour window, and after about a month I got an email with a half-wise decent upgrade price offer of $29.99, which I took. They have over-hyped version 7.5, which I have found to be mostly useless and frustrating. I spent all weekend trying to burn some DVD movies, only to have half of them ruined because the some features of the product don't work they way they say they do. Very disappointed - I won't buy their next product and I'm looking for something better instead. They're marketing this peice of junk like it's the best product around, and I feel like I've been taken...

1-0 out of 5 stars cant get it to burn a DVD
I'm sorry but the software seems to have a lot of nice features but I cant get it to do something as simple as burn a DVD.I have tried multiple other programs and never come across this problem before. After a week with the help desk it help.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a piece of trash.Waste of money & time - BEWARE!
I'm tired of waiting for software that actually works!OK, if Icould rate this a negative number I would.Make sure and back up your configuration and drivers before installing this piece of trash. It has destroyed the drivers on both of my computers (laptop and home).Neither computer will create a CD.It doesn't convert music types (and there is downloadable shareware that does this).Lots of fancy screens, lots of fancy words in their product description.Roxio has joined the ranks of so many other PC software creators (marketing, marketing, marketing).DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE.Matter of fact, send me the $100, you'll be better off!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Pay $100 to downgrade your music mixing program?!
I have been using the EZCD, now Roxio line of media software to make music mixes for years, since version 2.0.With heavy competition from numerous new music players, I stuck with Roxio and updated from version 6.0 to 7.5, eager to check out and use the promised benefits.Instead I found that 7.5 is actually a major DOWNGRADE of music mixing features and functionality. It's hard to believe, but true. Here are some of the downgrades:
1. 7.5 doesn't list and sort songs by artist or title at all!You have to go by the Windows file name!
2. 7.5 worsens the crossfading control feature, the major benefit of this program over other music mixing programs.7.5 can only apply crossfade or gap settings by whole seconds, rather than fractions as in 6.0, so you can't be as precise with the segues. Also, 7.5 doesn't allow control over the portion of the track you listen to when composing the crossfade, as 6.0 did.
3. 7.5 eliminates the "Audio Central" component of the 6.0 version and uses the old Creator Classic view, with less features.
4. 7.5 won't recognize your mixes (playlists) from 6.0.
5. 7.5 won't recognize and list your song titles and artist names from 6.0.
6. 7.5 has a terrible volume normalizing program that creates big quick blasts of higher or lower volume before finding the normalized level. This feature is applied only when burning, not when mixing, so you can't audition it until it's too late.Volume normalizing is just useless.
7. With 6.0, you could place as many tracks as you wanted into a playlist, then edit down from that to create a mix that would fit on a CD.With 7.5 you are limited to about 100 minutes of material to draw from.

Roxio actually lies about these features in their online "comparison" charts, stating that features which are not functional on 6.0 are present on 7.5, when in fact the opposite is true. This is deceptive advertising.

I have written to Roxio to get help on any or all of this, and I have received no response whatsoever.

If you've been using Roxio to make music mixes, it's time to look elsewhere. If you haven't been, don't start now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Homerun for Adobe!
Adobe continues its tradition with an industry-leading product in Photoshop CS. Photoshop has long been the industry standard in graphics and photo editing. With the introduction of Photoshop CS, the product has gotten even better. What's more, Adobe listens and is uniquely in tune with the needs and requests of Photoshop users. They have listened and added the most requested enhancements to this product.

Many new enhancements are added. For example, the color replacement tool. This wonderful tool allows you to choose a color on a photograph that you would like replaced, pick the color you would like to replace it with (even between images and layers!), then easily highlight and replace the offending color. This saves so much time and effort when editing and correcting photographs.

Photoshop CS has also picked up new things from it's cousin Illustrator. You can now to text on a line with ease. This has been a standard feature of Illustrator for a long time. However, it did not come in Photoshop. Now, rather than hassling with drawing the curve and using warp or some other technique to "wrap" the text onto the line, Photoshop CS can do it in one easy step.

As a Web Designer, I cannot say enough about all of the features available in this program. ImageReady has been enhanced to include improvements in the user interface. You can now create and modify web designs faster with multiple object selection, object grouping, and smart guides. There are also great improvements in image slicing, which is very important. You can now slice complex, layered images and apply appropriate format and compression settings to each area before exporting as an HTML table.

Another enhancement for Web Designers is that Photoshop CS can export as a Macromedia FlashÓ (SWF) file. Now you can use ImageReady CS to create FlashÓ animations that include the vector artwork and variable text. This enhancement really helps when compressing images and vector art for inclusion on a webpage or into a FlashÓ presentation.

Since I also occasionally work with video in Adobe Premiere, I can also really appreciate the enhancements that they have included in Photoshop CS for 16-bit and video production. The square to non-square pixel issue has always been a problem when taking images to video. Adobe has once again listened to the users and improved the non-square pixel support. Now we can create and work with non-square pixels with different aspect and not have to worry about distortion.

In summary, this is another homerun for Adobe with a product that far exceeds its competitors-bar none. The new enhancements, plus the ability to extend Photoshop CS exponentially with third-party plug-ins makes this program a must-have for any serious photographer, graphics designer or web designer.

Way to go Adobe!

1-0 out of 5 stars Bloatware at its best
Adobe is a big company and has tons of money, so why are they charging us an arm and a leg for bloatware that runs very slow? Launching the program takes half a minute on my 6-month-old PC with 512 mb RAM. A lot of things are hard to understand, which means you'll need to shell out more cash for a learning book, and Adobe wants you to buy their expensive books! Get jasc or other better products from independent software publishers. There's even a decent open-source (and free) image editing program.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most influential inventions in history.
Everybody talks of Photoshop simply as software. But it's implications in the modern day digital world are huge. Photoshop as an invention has been as influential as the light bulb, because it has changed our perception of reality. Today, every time we look at an image, say it's on a website, a magazine, television or any printed media, we wonder or contemplate the posibility of how much "Photoshopped" the image is. In the popular realm Photoshop can create crazy aberrations that are at times fun, and to the trained eye you can detect just where the editing took place. But in the hands of experts, we can just wonder how much media images have been manipulated without us ever noticing. What Photoshop has done over the years is to democratize digital image editing, something that was one time limited to high end image labs and pros. Photoshop has no real learning curve, because it's progressive. The thing is that if you're intrested, go for it, there are hundreds of learning resources available (tutorials included with the software are complete and comprehensive). Photoshop is a must have tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Advice for Beginners
I totally agree that Photoshop is an excellent software to use in editing images and making original art from scratch. This version of Photoshop, CS, brought with it many new improvements and enhancements that have already been taken up by previous reviewers. What I don't agree with is that most people say it is difficult to learn when in fact, it isn't! Those of you who wanted to own Photoshop and not afraid of experimenting, this is the perfect time to buy Photoshop and be counted as one image editing savvy person!

For newcomers and prospective buyers, don't let the "steep learning curve" routine preached by other folks discourage you. Photoshop is no more difficult to learn than any other software like Paintshop or PhotoImpact. I have tried all three and settled on Photoshop as THE EASIEST! All you need to have to learn it is a desire to improve your digital images, the knack to experiment, and a good book to guide you along (if you're learning on your own, like myself.)

Open Photoshop and you will see an almost unremarkable, unassuming interface which belies its true power. But this is a good thing because Photoshop functions can be simple or sophisticated as you like. It has a much neater interface compared to the above other softwares which means you can open functions only when you need them.

Get a good book that starts with simple concepts and go one step at a time. The beauty of going from simple tasks first (like how adjustment layers work) to more complicated ones (like layer mask compositing) is that you gradually develop your confidence. Pretty soon you will begin to discover on your own! Practice with you own photos and see the results immediately! Who said you have to be a professional to use a professional caliber software?

I agree on the saying that Photoshop is difficult to learn BUT only on the concept of making art. Not everybody have that eye. If you want to create works of art, then it only follows that you invest time in learning how, steep learning curve or otherwise. But this applies not only to Photoshop but to other softwares you might be using!

Now if most of your editing consists of uploading your digital images from camera to PC, enhancing exposure, cropping, framing, optimizing for email, boosting resolution to uncover detail for printing, how difficult can Photoshop be? It's easy! It's specifically designed for these tasks! Of course, other software can do this too at a much lesser price but I am assuming you want the top gun. With Photoshop, you can totally, CLEARLY do loads of other things. Because when you're ready to do more elaborate compositions, Photoshop will be there with even more specialized tools at your disposal.

If you like all the good things that you've heard about Photoshop, if you want a totally flexible, CLEAR tool to use in editing your images where all the non-destructive adjustments are right there at your fingertips CLEARLY laid out for you to turn on or off or adjust so you can instantly see how they affect your image, then do yourself a favor and buy a copy.

Just about the only reason I would recommend Paintshop or PhotoImpact (respectfully capable softwares, too) over Photoshop is the high price of Photoshop. On the other hand I understand you can take Photoshop classes and get BIG student discounts on Photoshop saving you hundreds of dollars. Read the reviews on beginning books on Photoshop and select one you believe will suit your taste. I strongly suggest one with practice images on CD and color pictures in the book itself.

Good luck and have fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal, but not for everyone
This is more than a mere software application; Photoshop is a multifaceted platform for creative expression. You can of course use this program to perform routine tasks such as cropping and touching up photos. However, you can also use it to design complex works of digital art. The top Photoshop gurus can create original photorealistic artwork that is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.

Photoshop is used to create print ads and logos, and the program even has its place in the creation of special effects for film. If you want to do professional-grade graphic design work, then you will want to buy this program. It simply has no competition at the higher end of the design spectrum.

Nonetheless, there are a few caveats to consider. Photoshop has a hefty price tag. It is priced for professionals, not for hobbyists. Before you spend the money, ask yourself if you really need all the features that Photoshop has to offer. If you simply want a program that will allow you to retouch and crop personal photographs, then either Photoshop Elements or PaintShop Pro will be more than adequate, and much cheaper.

Photoshop also has a steep learning curve. Casual users will likely be overwhelmed by the interface, with its multitude of tools, commands, and palettes. Don't expect to produce great results the first time you use PS. However, if you decide to commit yourself to learning Photoshop, there are plenty of tools on the market that can help you. An entire cottage industry is devoted to teaching neophytes and advanced users alike about the intricacies of alpha channels, layers, clipping masks, etc.

Finally, Photoshop requires a powerful computer in order to run efficiently. Before you buy it, make sure that your machine exceeds the minimum hardware requirements specified by Adobe. If you are using the same computer that you bought three or four years ago, then you will likely be looking at an additional hardware investment before you can take advantage of Photoshop.

In summary, this is a phenomenal program, but look before you leap. The investments of time and money needed to purchase and learn to use Photoshop are substantial. However, the results that a dedicated user can achieve with this program are truly amazing. If you are serious about graphic arts and/or photography, then Photoshop is a must-have piece of software. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing product with unbelievable low price
I am new in vector drawing. I've tried Adobe illustrator first, I cannot quite understand why I have to go through so much trouble to do simple things like draw a line. I decided to give coreldraw a try. Now I am hooked. Coreldraw shows that you can get into vector drawing and still keep your common sense. Coreldraw is so easy to use! After a few months, I can do very sophisticated drawing now.

By buying CorelPainter 8 and CorelDraw 12 Upgrade, I've spend only a fraction of the cost of any Adobe product to get EVERYTHING I need for computer graphics at professional level. Adobe products maybe powerful, but compare to what I got from corel, they cannot justify their unreasonable price tags. Also I think Adobe illustrator and photoshop have unnecessarily complicated and cumbersome interfaces, whoever designed them should be fired!

5-0 out of 5 stars In response to objection about the PhotoPaint
I am upgrading from version 10, and version 10 already has a way to make your default units in Photopaint Pixels.

There is also one user that has reviewed this three times with a bad review. C'mon, now.

Just press Ctrl-J and change the default units to pixels. Simple.

One of the greatest things about CorelDraw is the active help you can get from expert users at

I am an amature photographer and painter. And I love using photoshop too. But I can't afford photoshop. Adobe makes great products but they are overpriced. This is why I got Corel Graphics Suite. It supports all the plug-in's for photoshop, does pretty much everything photoshop and illustrator can and all for a cheaper price. If you are just starting out with computer graphics this is a good alternative to Adobe. Or if you are a student with little or no money and need a legit image suite this is the way to go.

3-0 out of 5 stars Photo-Paint 10 User looking for Upgrade
I have a 5MP DSC camera and use Photo-Paint 10 for all my digital photo work. I am continually irritated by the inability to set default values for the ruler. To edit EVERY photo using pixels, the process is Tools : Options : Units : Pixels ; OK - FIVE clicks for EVERY photo. I thought this would have been fixed in Photo-Paint 12 since the issue is continually brought up in Support. I downloaded the trial version of CorelDraw 12 from and alas it has not been fixed. I would pay the upgrade price for this feature alone.

2-0 out of 5 stars crash city
I upgraded from v10 hoping to see a lot of new features. CorelDraw in itself is a very valuable program - I have used it for years.

However v12 does crash and it does crash often, and for this reason alone it is extremely dissapointing. I don't think it was worth the upgrade, there just aren't enough new useful features to offset the frequent crashing / memory leak problems.

Basically what you get is some spiffy modernized graphics and icons, no significant improvement to the UI. The word on the street has it that there are some new features however I haven't explored enough to find them. I suppose the masking is a bit better. They still haven't added a curve smoothing option to the path tool in photopaint, this was a feature I was hoping I would see in v12. ... Read more

Poser 6 brings the art of figure design and posing right to your desktop, with an innovative UI to make working with the human form easily accessible. Included human and animal models come ready for you to start designing and posing immediately. You can click-and-drag to interactively sculpt faces, pose body parts, or create various ethnic varieties. For those who require finer control, full body morphs, facial expression morphs, and bone rigging are easily accessible for any figure. All features and models are provided in a natural 3D environment for realistic depth, lighting and shadowing on any figure in any pose. You can pose any figure by clicking and dragging a body part. With Document Display Styles you can view and design your figure in silhouette, outline, wireframe, textured, and more. The program lets you manipulate individual body parts, including the full body, facial expressions and fully articulated hands, and interactively sculpt and design figures in real time, including the body and facial expressions. Object-level Collision Detection helps with posing and avoids collisions when animating.

What's New in Poser 6?
  • New Figures
Poser 6 introduces James and Jessi, new figures with amazing realism to bring a new level of photorealstic content to your artwork. Both figures accurately depict the human form, have lifelike skin textures, and full morph target sets to design your own custom figures with facial expressions. Also included are new boy and girl children figures, Ben and Kate, who complete the new Poser family. The new Poser figures come with photorealistic texture maps, full body morphs, facial expression morphs, and are fully rigged for posing.
  • More Content
Poser's Content Paradisenow includes a host of top content providers, to bring you a diverse range of Poser 6 models, textures, poses, character packs, utilities and free stuff. A redesigned interface makes finding Poser content faster and easier than ever before.
  • Enhanced UI
Poser's innovative UI is centered on a productive room-based environment. Individual Pose, Setup, Materials, Hair and Cloth rooms provide easy feature access for each step in the creative process. In addition to rooms, Poser uses floating palettes and windows. You can customize your Poser workspace by hiding/displaying and relocating controls anywhere you like. You can even save up to nine different screen configurations for the entire Poser workspace.
  • Shadow Catching
Poser 6 introduces several new features to support artists in rendering more true to life shadow effects. For example the NEW Shadow Catcher feature enables you to separate shadows from their underlying surface, and put them virtually anywhere. These new features make image composition and integrating 3D figures into graphic design easier.
  • New Toon Outlines
The New Toon Outline feature uses post-processing during rendering to draw an outline around the edges of cartoon images. Poser 6 offers customizable outline styles, enabling you to further personalize your cartoon shading look. Add a distinctive style to any cartoon imagery for comics. Now you have the choice to add outlines to any cartoon imagery you create with Poser. This feature's effect is most dramatic when combined with a cartoon shader node. Configurable Cartoon Shading preview styles allow you to approximate the final render results as you work.
  • OpenGL
OpenGL delivers accelerated performance when previewing anything from cartoon to photorealistic 3D figures. Now you can display vivid textures and lighting in real-time when designing figures. You can even render high resolution images using the OpenGL Preview renderer. There are accelerated previews for your 3D scenes, so you can see vivid textures and lighting in real-time. This feature works with all Document Display Styles, including wireframe, cartoon, and more. You can render out your 3D scene display with the OpenGL Preview renderer, and easily switch between SreeD Software and OpenGL Hardware for scene previews--which means you can maximize your system’s resources and spend your time creating rather than waiting.
  • New Ambient Occlusion
Ambient Occlusion makes figures seem as though they are in the natural lighting environment of the real world. Ambient Occlusion is available on every light to create accurate soft shadow effects, thus giving scenes a new degree of realism. The new Ambient Occlusion shader node makes figures and objects appear as though they are in a natural lighting environment. Ambient Occlusion darkens surfaces within a scene whose exposure to light is blocked by other objects. This effect uses raytracing to calculate the degree to which other objects within a scene occlude the ambient light of a surface at a given point. Surfaces with more occlusion will be rendered as darker than surfaces with little or no occlusion. You can set Ambient Occlusion lighting for all objects, or select lighting effects focused on specific parts of your scene.

More About Poser

  • Photorealism
Poser 6 allows you to quickly design and pose pre-rigged figures, or create original figures to suit your needs. With professional lighting effects and shading materials, a large library of content and photorealistic textures, you can create professional-quality imagery and movies. You can also integrate with other 3D applications, or composite photorealistic imagery into your favorite image editing or motion graphics programs. Just some of the features in Poser 6 include: accurate human male, female and children 3D models; large libraries of content included; quick design/pose pre-rigged figures with full morph target sets; realistic perspective in 3D space; and professional lighting effects and procedural shader material trees
  • Camera Controls
Cameras represent your window into the Poser workspace. You can use them as a director would, to set up your ideal camera shots for each image or animation frame. Or, you can take advantage of the benefit that comes with 3D work, of being able to render a scene from multiple angles. In either case, Poser 6 offers multiple configurable cameras to facilitate your creative workflow.Poser includes a variety of independent cameras for viewing your scene, and a four-pane camera view. All are easily controlled with an innovative Trackball control for intuitive scene setup.
  • Realistic Lighting
Lighting is an essential component of any 3D image. Lights add colors, cast shadows, create specific effects, and set the tone for your scene. Poser 6's light controls allow you to add and individually configure different types of light sources in your Poser scene. When these light configuration options are combined with Poser 6's powerful rendering tools, the lighting possibilities are unlimited.
  • Bone Rigging
Create new, fully poseable Poser figures from any 3D object in a few easy steps. Import 3D geometry, break it into body parts and generate new Poser figures. You can even create Inverse Kinematics (IK) chains. Inverse Kinematics (IK) delivers natural character motion by modeling the hierarchical interactions of bones and joints, so that when you move a hand, the arm naturally follows.
  • OpenGL Preview
New OpenGL hardware acceleration offers improved performance with figure Posing and Preview renders. Easily switch between SreeD Software and OpenGL. Hardware rendering for scene previews means you can maximize your system's resources and spend your time creating rather than waiting.
  • Photo-based Facial Mapping
Want to create a virtual you? Friend? Import facial photos to easily model new characters and create texture maps. Poser's Face Room allows you to create lifelike results by mapping any face onto a 3D head. You can also generate new faces with a button click, or create caricatures for wild characters. Ethnicity, age, and gender parameter controls round out this powerful set of facial tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poser 6, Ready for Prime Time.
OK, I'm prejudiced. I love Poser and have been using it since Version 3. I still think I can be fair. There are some things that I wish Poser 6 had and some things I'll never use. I think this version is 99% there.

Poser 6 only has 1 level of "Undo". Most users long for more undo power. It does have a "Revert" feature that allows you to jump back to the last saved version. That's pretty handy.

The new OpenGL preview is fantastic. The improved display isn't just about speed. The quality of the preview is much better as well. A feature cartoon artists will love is Poser's toon style preview. There are 5 toon preview styles. For some applications they may be of a quality that a full render is not needed.

Some users have had trouble with their graphics cards. Curious Labs included legacy support, a Software preview called SreeD. If your card does not support OpenGL you can still use Poser 6. Usually updating the software driver for the graphics card solves the problems.

Several new features have been added to the render engine in Poser 6. The biggest is probably IBL and AO (Image Based Lightingand Ambient Occlusion) These new light sources allow you to create very accurate real world lighting. Several real world "Light Probes" are included. Setting up IBL can be tricky so a Wizard/Macro (They call it a Wacro) is included to help you.

Another new render feature is toon outline. Poser 5 introduced toon style renders, but they were tricky to setup and the "ink" was not quite right. Poser 6 has a "Toon Outline" option in the renderer. One thing I would like to have seen was a way to control the color for the "ink" used on the toon outline. Henry Ford said, "You can have any color you want as long as it's black." Those are your color choices for the toon outline. Black. You can control line weight and style. Setting up the toon outline can be tedious as each material will need to have a toon ID assigned to get the lines right.

Poser's procedural materials can be hard for beginners to setup. Poser 6 has a simplified version of the Material room that makes it easy for users upgrading from Poser 4 the get into the new version. Once you know how to use the material room you can switch to the advanced view and dive into the powers hidden in the "shader nodes".

Poser 6 includes a new family of Characters. James, Jessi and the kids Ben and Kate. The new figures use a type of character rigging (Joints) that was used in Poser 4. Some people think it's a step backward. There are some advantages to this rigging technique. The newer (Evolution) rigging frequently didn't work well with Poser's drag to pose system. With the old style rigging works more reliably with drag to pose. Just click a arm or leg and drag it to where you want it. Poser 6 work fine with the evolution rigging if you use direct joint manipulation. The figures included on the original distribution CD have problems. Curious Labs has already released a content update to fix these problems. Be sure to download the update.

Animation in Poser is easy. Poser automatically calculates "In between" frames. You pose the key frames and Poser figures out what to do in between. There are several ways to edit animations. Key frame manipulation and graph tools give you complete control over your animation. A Walk Designer will create walking animations with just a few clicks. Some of the animation tools will take some practice to learn. There are 4 ways Poser can calculate the "In betweens". Linear, Spline, Constant and Spline Break. Learning when and how to use each will take some practice.

When Poser 5 was launched it was nearly a disaster. The program was very unstable. Lots of users swore off Poser then. Poser 6 is different. Curious Labs learned from the mistakes made then and have been careful not to make the same mistakes again. It was thoroughly beta tested prior to release and while some bugs did survive 4 months of testing the program is very stable.

I have to come clean. I was one of the beta testers. I got to watch as the engineers shaped the new program. I must admit I was scared up until about half way through beta. Then every thing started to come together. I could see it was going to be great. I wanted this release to launch perfect. But, that never seems to happens. Sure enough bugs made it through, fortunately none of seem to be deal busters. Curious Labs will (and by the time you read this may already have) release patches for the problems.

Poser 6 is great program. Beginners and experts will find it easy to use and powerful. It comes with a large library of pre made content, but it's power isn't really unlocked until you start adding content. There are hundreds of artists that create add on items for Poser. Many of them offer free goodies, I'm one of them.

    Happy Rendering

4-0 out of 5 stars Poser 6, it's about time
Finally, I can step up from Poser 4 ProPack without the constant fear of crashing.Poser 6, compared to Poser 5, has run consistantly stable without a crash.(I did have to update my graphics card drivers, but that's usually expected with new software)

Now that I can start enjoying many of the options introduced in Poser 5, my artwork can start to be more vibrant.Granted I'm behind the masses that updated to Poser 5 (to which I was a contributing artist on the content cd), but I always had problems with program crashing.

I've found Poser to be very easy to learn, and a quick fix for the artist that needs faster results then creating everything in 3d from scratch.Of course you still can adapt your original work to Poser, and Poser 6 makes it even easier with more options to do so.

Poser 6 may not be for the beginner to 3d, but there is a large poser community ready to help you along. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't switch doctors.
If you're happy using Toast 5 and are a heavy user of the bundled Spin Doctor, stick with it--unless you have OSX. Toast is the fastest and handiest CD-burning software I've tried, and I was content with my old version until the application for converting analog to digital (Spin Doctor) refused to open up in OSX, even with the update downloaded from Roxio. Toast 6 solves that problem while providing more colorful graphics and increased automation. The defining of a track is "streamlined," which takes some getting used to, and I haven't figured out yet how to edit wave forms, which are proving useless in this version. In order to recognize and remove "dead space" in a radio broadcast, I'm forced either to use the version of Spin Doctor in Toast 5 or go to the PC application, "Cool Edit." I can't speak to the other new features of Toast, as I don't use them much. I do notice, though, that Roxio has cut back a bit on the packaging (no case for the installation CD) and the instruction manual (it's now mostly under the Help menu).

Since writing the above, I've discovered that Apple's bundled "Sound Studio" is the best way to edit wave forms, after which you can burn them to CD in Toast. Moreover, I've discovered that the distortion I was hearing while recording FM in Spin Doctor (only in the monitoring) is not a problem in Sound Studio. For recording LP's, I still plan to use Spin Doctor, but those colorful wave forms are little more than consumer cosmetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars mmmm... Toasty
Been a Toast user for years. Loved 5... didn't think it could get any better... but they figured out how to improve on something that was already near perfect.

The interface - already super simple in 5 - is better in 6. They got rid of the "Other" menu (thank you) and added in a Video area. Plus you can now do multiple copies like printing multiple pages, and there's burning right from the desktop with a handy Toast It menu.

Now I'm able to burn DVDs when I want and SVCDs when I want - no matter that my burner is external. It's a bit slow on my G4... but the quality is fantastic... and so it's worth the wait. VCD seems faster than in Toast 5.

Motion Pictures is pretty cool. Sure you can do the same thing in iMovie... but it takes about 20 hours longer to get the same thing done.

Spin Doctor is MUCH improved. I don't have many records to import... but it's done the job great on the first one I tried.

The networked recorder thing is really amazing. My Powerbook doesn't have a burner, but I'm able to record to the burner in my desktop machine with no hassle.

It comes with a detailed printed manual... which is pretty sweet (even though I've barely had to open it)... I can't remember the last piece of software I bought that came with a manual... oh wait.. now I can... it was Toast 5.

This software is great... and definitely worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discus 3.0.4 upgrade Label/Jewel Case Software is Tops
I own Toast 6 with two upgrades. (6.0.5) Using OS X 3.4 I needed a software update for my LaCie Burner.
The Technical Help is quick and fast at Toast/Roxio. They told me to download it and gave me the link.
Last night I Toasted some CD-ROM's for training Case Managers. I burned Six CD and Printed Labels and Jewel Case Inserts and Tray liner in a half hour.

The extra $20 to upgrade to Discus 3.0.4 is well worth the Time and Money. (Newer Software and Full artwork) Real Pro looking Artwork and Label from a great Library. You can use any brand of Paper (Avery, Neato, Memorex etc.) and even nudge 0.5 mm adjustment if necessary. Memorex tray liners got an adjustment and it work for all futures use of that paper. This software lets you import for iTunes and Toast what you are Toasting for a list of software or Song Lists etc. Software so easy, I did NOT read the directions. Just do what you want to do the MAC way. I Like the Neato Jewel case booklets for Training instructions (Music Album Notes) and Memorex tray liners. I have one software and Four brand of paper
You can even print business cards on which I ton of good comments. "What a Beautiful Card."
Spin Doctor takes out the starches on old LP's for converting to CD's.
I was so happy with the Toast 6 package I did not take the rebate offer. I also used Toast 5 Lite that came with my LaCie.
A New feature lets you Toast to a burner over the internet which are great for Training DVD's to people 15 miles away.

Give the Package Bundle five stars

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for any Mac owner!
When I bought my eMac, this was the first software I HAD to buy. I make a lot of CDs, so I decided that this was a must, and I've owned Easy CD Creator for the PC, so I knew that it would be easy to use and feature most of the functions I would need.

It's true that it meets most of my needs and with a simple, clean interface. I can make a music CD and store files in no time and it can even create Video CDs and DVDs with menus.

Of course, to many, Toast may seem redundant, as Mac OS X can handle most of your burning needs natively, but I prefer to use 3rd party software for those things, as it was created specifically for that purpose. However, the two things that Toast can do that Panther cannot are create Video CDs and burn DVDs directly from MPEG and Quicktime files without the need to demux audio.

I get some Japanese TV shows from friends in Japan in MPEG format and I like to watch them on my TV, so it's nice to be able to burn them into VCD or DVD format for viewing and backup. If you do a lot of video downloading, this really can come in handy. Also, it works GREAT with EyeTV (sold separately) for the Mac, so you can record your favorite TV shows and put them on CD!

My only complaint is that the DVD/VCD menu option stinks. There is only one menu interface and you cannot choose layout, music, background photo or anything. It's just a plain blue screen with a thumbnail of the video and text titles. And the thing is, it's not very nice--it's borderline gaudy and not what I'd choose for a standard menu layout.

But, with that aside, this is a product I can wholeheartedly recommend for any Mac user with above-average burning needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burn Baby Burn!
Macs come with quite a robust burner in the Finder and the new iLife '04 goes even further than before in giving users more options to customize their discs. So what exactly does Toast do that the Mac OS can't do on it's own?

- Multi Session Burning
- Encrypt data discs with a password
- Burn exact copies of a disc
- Choose which OS the disc will be compatible with
- You can save a burn project so you can burn it again at a later date

These features alone make Toast a very tempting purchase. Thankfully though, it can do much more and it pulls it all off with ease. Drag and drop is about as complicated as the interface gets, but the results are that you have discs burned the way you want that work the way you want. Toast is a powerful, well-rounded, fully featured burning software that just about every user will find useful.

As a bonus you get Discus (for making labels for all those discs you've burnt) and Spin Doctor 2 (for taking out pops and hiss from imported music from records and tapes). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great update
iPhoto 5 is a great update. It does lots more, and on a dual processor G5 really flies! It does have a bit of a funky response if you tweak the saturation of a photo in extreme highlights (window in a backlit situation) where the whole area of complete white goes a funky color. But just undo what you by reverting to the original and start over. iMove and iDVD are good updates too with the new 16:9 ratio and some really nice themes. Better performance, and more functionality. Garageband with recording up to 8 lines in at once is a major improvment, especially being albe to see notes appear as you write your music! It may not be Logic Express (also owned by Apple) but it really works well. Garageband alone is worth the upgrade.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Design Resume Absolutely Must Have Quark
I learned how to effectively use Quark in the first 2 weeks of my college Prepress class, and anybody in the design world knows that if you can't use it you're a novice. It's itelligent, straight forward and an essential program for any graphic designer to master. All the complaints about this program are the result of non professionals who are either unwilling or unable to learn how to use it properly. "In Design" - what a joke. I love Adobe products, but let's get serious. If you can't use Quark, you might as well start applying for a job designing the Church Newsletter, because you can't get a top level design position without knowing this program. If you are studying to be a designer - trust me... learn it, know it, love it!

I am actually writting this review while on the phone with their tech support group in India. I can barely understand the person and the can you believe that you have to call them to reactivate the software every time we go from Daylight Savings Time to Daylight Time. That is twice per year. There is a bug in their authentication/serial number system, which by design includes the DST flag for the local computer in the activation routine.

This is crazy...After paying full price for two copies, why do I have to spend 30 minutes per machine twice per year to reactivate their product to help them control piracy, of which I am not a part of.

Sounds like class action suit time...We should all sue for the time lost just in reactivating their products.

I used to be happy with version 3.x and 4.x.

This is the most poorly designed software yet from Quark. First, installing it can prove to be a terror if you have to ever reinstall it. Quark has set up a monstrous procedure where you must call them or attempt at their website to activate the software, which can force you to wait 2 to 3 days before you can use it. The orginal from the factory is actually their demo. Not just that, but the length of the activation code is 47 numbers and even though you get them right, they won't work on their website application/registration/activation page.

Now, let's assume you get that far. Once into the working Quark you'll find you spent a lot of money for nothing more than what Quark 4.1 offers except for a "clear vision" extension and some minor bells and whistles. They advertise that you can "build web pages" using Quark, clearly deceiving you to believe you can "translate existing Quark documents" to web pages. Forget it. You have to redo or build from scratch. It's also very old technology and is not the kind of page you want to post against the newer W3C rules. You'll play with the deveil in the end.

Best to use the older version if you still have it. If you've never used Quark and are tempted to buy it to try it...go to Adobe's Indesign first or pick up an older copy of Adobe's Pagemaker.

Finally, Quark's support service is AWFUL. They just aren't there for you when you need them, unless you pay them a lot of money for a "service agreement." If you do get hold of someone, they are in a foreign country and barely understandable and worse, they are reading something or blaming you for their product not working correctly. Quark has changed from its original service company to the newer modern insult-the-customer business style.

Thumbs down on this one.

I've been using QuarkXpress for 8 years and was a dedicated Xpress user until the release of Quark 6.0 (which I purchased). The pdf feature and the high resolution preview of eps files and OSX compatibility as well as it's familiarity made me give it a try. I've been using Xpress 6 for about a month now and I'm not impressed. Customer support is weak at best and it is almost impossible to register because users have to enter a serial number and a registration number and a one hundred digit activation code (I'm not kidding 100 numbers and letters). Quark claims it's software will activate automatically on-line. It doesn't if you have a firewall. Many of the new features Quark claims to have added are extensions that must be installed separately (high res preview for eps images being one of them). Quark 4.11 users will be upset to learn that 6.0 will only save down to version 5.0 and there isn't a plug-in to fix this oversight as Quark claims. The icing on the cake is that if you change computers or if your system has trouble and you need to re-install QuarkXpress 6 you'll have to call Quark and get a new activation code. Be prepared to wait a week or two. Now if you've wasted enough of your valuable time you've probably been like me and bought a copy of InDesign. Yeah I have to learn a few things to be as fast as I was in Quark ..but it'll be worth it . The best part of InDesign is that I registered Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive and InDesign with one serial number and I was up and running (at half the price of QuarkXpress).

I love Quark's software. But it does have its quirks. First, most of its latest improvements seem to be in tweaking an aggravating activation system that is frequently corrupted and requires reactivation. So if you're operating off a notebook and can't reactivate, you have to call Quark, wait forever for a new code to be generated, and painstakingly type it in.

Second, Quark has gone through great lengths to make its web design module work better, but I never use Quark for web design, so that only makes the program bigger and klunkier.

Quark 6 does do multiple undos, for which it deserves kudos; however, it's maddening to find out that not all actions are undoable. Write down the ones that aren't or you'll be sorry.

Finally, one computer, one program. Forget about having this baby on your home and work computer or your desktop and notebook.

My advice? If you have Quark 5, keep it and cherish it. If you don't, get Quark 5 off EBay and let some other sucker upgrade. And finally, if you want to come over to the light side of The Force, get Adobe's fabulous InDesign. Not only is it better behaved, it has no activation and you can put it on both of your computers. It's also more stable. For me personally, I'm staying with Quark 5.
