Amazon.com Review

There's nothing quite like building your own world, and no applicationmakes it easier than Bryce. Now on its fifth major revision and currently ownedby Corel, Bryce has grown from a fun application for building alien planets to acapable rendering tool with advanced features.

Version 5 offers numerous new features and improvements. To address thecomplaints of the slow rendering engine, Bryce 5 has introduced networkrendering. No longer will one computer have to slave away all its own on a10-second scene. Rendering can be distributed across as many systems as areavailable on your network. The number of computer slaves available for use isonly limited by your own hardware, as Bryce's network rendering license isunlimited. However, Bryce still doesn't take advantage of computers withmultiple CPUs--rendering on a system with two 400 MHz processors takes the sametime as rendering on a system with one.

If you've got a green thumb, Bryce 5 has the Tree Lab, one of the easiest waysto grow a forest. Nearly everything about a tree is variable: number ofbranches, number of leaves, kind of trunk, kind of leaf, branch angle, amount ofbranching, etc. There are presets for dozens of common and uncommon trees, andthe thumbnail preview screen lets you preview in wire-frame or rendered views.

Once the forest is grown, you might want to light it up using the tools from theLight Lab. Based on the earlier version, the new Light Lab has been redesignedto make it easier to build, adjust, and customize lights and their attributes. You can use color gradients as gels for lights, and control other attributeslike shadow ambiance, soft shadows, blurry reflections, and true ambiance.

The new Light and Tree Labs, as well as metaballs and network rendering, makeBryce 5 a must-have application for old and new users alike. --MikeCaputo ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful product
If your on any kind of budget and start choking when you see $500 or $1,000 for 3D software this is an excellent product. Bryce 5 has an easy to learn interface that allows you to move and alter objects, change atmosphere, and change camera views without having to beat it with a stick. The program lets you save objects, textures, and atmospheres you've created into the program so that they're always there when you come back. It also comes with alot of preset object and textures you can use, so you can create an image the first time you open the program. This isn't the program you want if your trying to do complex character animation, but it's really good for landscapes, architecture, and background. If your not sure this product is for you go to a few 3D sites and look at images people have made with Bryce 5. I've been using it for a year and I'm really happy with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A flawed favorite
I've been using Bryce since it was ported to Windows at version 2.0. My impressions were, this is great but I can spend a brief eternity waiting for it to render. As features were added and stability was addressed we get to Bryce 5 which does a nice job of creating interesting 3D images. Created to be a nature designer Bryce 5 offers import and texture mapping of several 3D objects. This is important as it's nice to sometimes add buildings, animals or humans to pictures you design. The modeling tools are designed for natural scene creation but it is easy to create indoor scenes, 2D style studies and combinations of styles.

The renderer is excellent with many options for developing your world. Bryce's interface has always been unique but intuitive. Still you will want to read the bland manual. After market books are poor to acceptable - beware of books depending on you purchasing modeling packages or 3D clip art.

The animation options are acceptable for a program in this price range but aren't really suitable for much more than short clips, say 5 to 30 seconds. Even with a very fast, highly tweaked computer Bryce can crawl when rendering.

Some solutions are to keep your animations simple and turn off the antiailising, on smaller frame sizes it is harder to notice and saves between 20 to 60% of render time. If developing stills make your picture slightly larger and don't use antiailising, go into your favorite graphics editor and resize. You will get faster renders and usually no jagged edges. For fun and small projects Bryce is great. It is priced to be appealing to the home user that isn't necessarily an artist but will certainly learn as they compose and develop scenes and animations.

Bryce 5 is getting old and lacking in many modern features including the inability to take advantage of modern processors. Still, it is fun to work with and can create some of the most realistic landscapes or abstracts you can imagine. Bryce 5 expects little from the user, even it's learning curve is simple, especially for a 3D program, and has impressive results. Because of it's slow renderer it is not really a good professional solution although pro quality landscaping tools for high quality 3D programs cost three times Bryce's price and demand a general purpose 3D program well into the high hundred dollar to multi-thousand dollar solution.

If you were curious what you could do in the visual arts but currently don't have the talent you can realize many of your ideas in Bryce 5. Much of 3D graphics have more to do with physics than artistic skills. If you are good at visualizing Bryce 5 is an excellent and modest costing program.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Awesome
I began using Bryce 5 at my school and soon bought a copy of my own because I love this program. I have spent endless nights creating new enviroments and such.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great power for creativity and low price, but annoying...
It sure is hard to beat having the power to create your own world in 3D for so little money. If you want to break into 3D graphics, this is a good place to start.

However, if I had it do to over again, I would have bought a book on Bryce and read it before trying to learn by experience. That's the hard way.

Also, there are some useability issues that annoy me continually.

For example, there is a "select all" function key shortcut, but no "deselect all" function key. Why not? Photoshop does this.

Another is that they give you the ability to create trees, and they pre-load about seventy different tree templates, but in the select pull-down the don't alphabetize the tree names, so even if you know what you're looking for you have to visually scan the entire list.

Finally, and most annoying, once you get more than a few objects in your project then selecting an individual object becomes a real chore. There's a function that allowes one to select objects without clicking on them, which is rather handy.

However, if you have for example ten different cubes in your project, and you want to select one of them, you click on the little cube selector on the bottom and you can choose to select from the list of cube objects. However, there's nothing on the screen to identify the cube objects, so I have to select all the cubes until I find the one I want.

I find myself taking more time to select the objects I want to manipulate than I do actually manipulating the objects. Once I've spent a few hours with this product, I'm worn out, frusterated, and I don't want to use it again for several days.

The bottom line is that this software is powerful, affordable, but not much fun to use once you get past "Wow, I just created a mountain with a mouse-click."

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Warez man
Where to start...Corel Bryce 5 is [great], I like 3D landscapes or what i call "starescapes". Here is another creative powerhouse, the texture, material, bump mapping is awesome. Watch out for the tree lab though, scale it to large, add to much foliage..watch your PC choke to death on it(mine does)! The animations you can make are really cool as well, from simple, like a screw driving in to a 2x4, to complex, like a full length cartoon, Bryce 5 can do it, you can model cars from terrain plains, make "monsters" out of primitives, the boolean operations can make some wicked stuff. I highly recommend it, and I challenge you to master it..just when you think you have...guess what, you find something new you can do..your imagination and computer are your only limits! As Eric Cartman would say "kick [butt]"...oh yeah you can model him as well ;) ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Amorphium Pro takes the original version of Amorphium to thenext level while adding some professional features. An important newoption is the ability to export 3-D animation as a Flash movie, broadening Amorphium's appeal to Web designers. The program alsofeatures better import-export functions.Amorphium includes tools for building models, adding texture, animating, and rendering out to a QuickTime, AVI, or Flash movie. Thusit works well as a complete standalone application for creatinganimated graphics. However, the application's import and exportabilities allow Amorphium to work with other programs such as 3ds Maxand Electric Image Universe, making it an excellent organic modelerthat works in conjunction with these and other applications.

Amorphium works in modes, and only one portion of a model can beadjusted at a time. This is both good and bad, as it allows the modelerto focus on only one segment. Making changes to one section withoutseeing it in the context of the whole model can be difficult. For that, you need to switch back to the Composer mode, where all pieces areassembled. Composer is also the stage where models are arranged, lit,and animated. Other modes include Materials, where textures areapplied, Painting, Mask (for protecting areas of a model), HeightShop(for applying bump maps), and Mapping (for adding decals to objects).

Output formats include QuickTime, still images, and, now, Flashanimation. The Flash output options included settings for renderingwith outlines, solid shapes, gradients, background color, and quality.File sizes for animation can be large if the animation isn't designedcorrectly, but there are some tips in the manual for keeping a lid onsizes.

For better or worse, the interface itself has changed only slightly, with the important addition of multiple views. A Windows button at thebottom of the screen will arrange the windows in a preconfigured quadview, single view, or two-window view. All windows can be resized. Theunique interface, however, is also the weak spot of the application. Itis inconsistent with other applications on either platform, and is eveninconsistent with Electric Image's own Universe, the big brother toAmorphium. It's a good thing that the program is so easy to use andencourages experimentation, because the thin manual is of minimal help.

Still, Amorphium Pro offers an ease of use and a sense of immediatefeedback that is unique to 3-D modeling programs. Flash output is amajor strength, as is the interactive painting mode. There is somethingaddictive about building things, and when you can build something andbring it to life through animation, the thrill is magnified. AmorphiumPro is an addictive little application, and an ideal introduction tocomputer modeling and animation. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for beginners
Being new to the 3d rendering world I have found this to be a great product. Cheap and won't kill your wallet like others, Amorphium Pro 1.1 does a great job not only allowing you to easily create 3d modles, but allows for importing Bryce. I was always intersted in creating 3d mecha (as A Sci-fi buff) and Amphorium did not disappoint. Amorphium did allow me to get a foot of understanding of the complexety of 3D rendering, while further sparked my growing intrest in 3D rending. Another nice feature was it exports into Macromedia's Flash, and will tolerate other Marcromedia software.

However, the down side is only one book availabe to learn the program and the built in tutorials. Amphoriums website also contians some more walk throughs and I have had good luck there find links to others who could help.

Over all great product, but lack of support may hurt long term success.

4-0 out of 5 stars Electronic Clay
Amorphium allows its users to manipulate basic shapes (sphere, cone, cylinder, and others) and turn them into stunning 3D graphics. This program is the electronic equivalent to molding clay. It is very easy to learn and comes with tutorials that will help you learn the program and its functions. If you're looking for a fun modeling program to play around with, then pick up Amorphium.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for 3-D beginners
Being proficient at Photoshop and Illustrator for 4 years soon wasn't enough. I found the need to break into 3-D modeling. My first attempt was to teach myself 3D Studio Max. I know, I know: Good luck, buddy. I gave up. But by advice I purchased Amorphium Pro. It is great for beginners. Don't be fooled because you still have to practice at it and work your rear off to get better. But Amorphium is the best step for 3-D beginners. It is like modeling electronic clay. My best software purchase ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Modelling Program
I purchased Amorphium Pro 1.1 as my first 3D modelling program. I've been working on it for about a month, and I am constantly amazed by the limitless features & the incredible ease. I have found, however, the Amorphium Pro is more suited for creating models - not for creating environments or worlds. A tip for anyone who has purchased Amorphium: though there are no tutorials in the manual, there are some good ones in the program folder and on amorphium.com. Overall, a great program!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for modeling
Even if you are new to the 3d software Genre, this is really a good program to start on. It is the first program where I was really able to get good looking results. It helps if you are familiar with the layout of the average 2d graphics program, as the layout is somewhat similar. The layout of the interface is unlike any windows or mac software that I have seen, but that doesn't make it bad. I was able to learn the software and produce decent results within a few days. If you are a young, or aspiring 3d artist this is definitly one to consider; and the price certainly makes it more appealing than some choices. ... Read more

This upgrade offers a host of new features and enhancements. There is now a UV texture atlas for automated complex UV map creation, continuous and discontinuous UV mapping, and light and texture baking. Bone deformations have been significantly optimized and are now up to 40 times faster. In the Motion Designer, a soft-body dynamics engine is now integrated seamlessly into the interface. There is also an integrated particle system, open GL transparency, enhanced texturing, and improved Bezier handling and general speed optimizations in Graph Editor. There is a powerful new integrated expressions system, including an expressions tree view in the Graph Editor.

Improvements to HyperVoxels include fast 2-D sprite mode and new HyperVoxels effects. The new noise-reduction tool in layout greatly improves the render quality of zero-tolerance radiosity and area-linear light shadows. This allows for much higher-quality radiosity output at lower radiosity settings, resulting in greatly reduced render times. Volumetric Antialiasing in the effects panel allows the user to disable this feature. This allows for much lower render times when utilizing volumetrics. The volumetrics tools have many improvements, including a new Cast Shadows option in the volumetric lights panel, which will cast shadows caused by the light opacity. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good 3-D software for the money ... Poor customer service.
One of the applications I like to use has just come out with a major upgrade and for someone without an unlimited supply of cash it is a very tempting offer. The application is Eovia's Carrara (formerly a MetaCreations tool) and it is a very good 3-D animation app. The new features look great what with the new and/or improved rendering options, the volumetrics, the environmental settings. I want it. If I trusted them at all anymore I would jump at the chance to upgrade but I have a little problem with Eovia...

I made them aware of two problems with Carrara 2.1 almost a year ago (mid 2002) 1) that the particle system did not work as advertised in that the particles did not 'shade' properly when the birth, life, and death settings were chosen and 2) the fire primitive will not render in place unless an object is behind it. They never saw fit to address either problem with a patch. I didn't just make them aware of it once, I sent them bug reports on four separate occasions until they eventually told me that many other people had made them aware of the issue, please stop sending us bug reports. I also made them aware of a problem with the rendering area in their VectorStyle 1.0 (an add-on plug-in that renders your animation in flash) and again, they have never bothered to address the issue. Apparently problems with their software do not concern them. Why should it? A new version that they can charge for will be along in a year or so, why on earth would they care about putting out fixes for their core users?

Are these huge issues that make the software unusable? Of course not, they even gave me some (imperfect) workarounds for the fire primitive issue. But imagine that you buy a new car and it will not go in reverse but they tell you the work around to this is to always park facing the street and also imagine that the air conditioner does not work unless you wedge a matchbook in the control panel to hold the knob in place. When it comes time to buy another new car will you look favorably on that particular car? Considering the service you received will you be considering buying from that particular car company?

I imagine that the Carrara 3 probably works as advertised and they fixed the particle system and the fire primitive, unfortunately I will never know for sure because I will not upgrade due to the inattention they gave to the problems I have had with their products. It's not like I was complaining that the background color of the windows clashed with my living room, these are real problems with the tool that some of us would like to use.

The inclusion of a particle system was one small consideration in my purchase...too bad it never worked right in version 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars love it
Been in 3d art for many year i use carrara to make models
its interface is all most the same as bryce with some changes
easy to move around in.

5-0 out of 5 stars almost perfect
after testing maya 4 3d studio max and lightwave 7.0 I came to the conclusion that lightwave 7.0 was the best. It had the most to offer me and was fully cusomisable. lightwave has 2 programs modeler and layout. modeler is where you model (offcourse) and layout is where you render your scene. this is to keep the number of buttons to a minimum not like maya and 3d max where you have millions of wierd looking buttons on the side no lightwave uses just names. Also it is verry easy to use if youre animating with the scene editor. and the particle effects are far mor proffecional than those from maya. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool and Easy
This is very easy to use and it has lots of good textures. I have made lots of amazing stuff because of this software. I made good details to my models. But it doesn't have a IK stucture. When I tried to make charcters to my models, it is colorful, but when I tried to animate it, it doesn't move like real charcters. But it is cool that I can make my own movies and animations. But sometimes it takes long time to render. Although this pruduct is easy to use. GET IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Animation and modelling is a breeze
This product is very easy to use. The animation tools are good too. I did use POVRay with Moray, but I'm convinced that this product is easier. It allows you to scale textures in real-time (using OpenGL) so that you can see the immeadiate results. Also, you can run a test animation in wire-frame mode - or in flat mode (no shadows or textures) in a fraction of the time it takes for a fully rendered animation.

It directly imports dxf and 3ds files - so all those models on the web can be used. The manual is easy to understand and has everything well documented. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lightwave 3D modeling and animation capabilities
Lightwave is probably one of the most mature and capable of all the 3D modeling, rendering, and animation programs on the market. I have worked with it since it was first released in 1991 and was then unique to the Commodore Amiga platform; few know that it actually had a predecessor (also written by Allen Hastings) known as Videoscape.

The program is especially well suited to engineering and technical applications but it will handle essentially any kind of animation or modeling task extremely well. You can learn to use it quickly, but learning all of its capabilities is probably a life-long task.

These are some of the things I've used the program for:

1. Creating illustrations and cover art for technical documents. 2. Architectural renderings. 3. Training materials. 4. Scientific and technical visualization. 5. TV commercials

One interesting feature of the program is that it can import AutoCAD DFX files. Poser 3D - which models the human body - can export that format, so you with the combination of the two, yoou can create some striking images of the human form in any setting you can imagine.

It's a great program.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are creative, you can build anything
Lightwave 3D is one of the rare products that allows a novice user to create something amazing within an hour of using the program for the first time, and allow the user to dig deeper and deeper. Lightwave has a powerful foundation with a huge assortment of tools. One could literally use the program for a year and create amazing stuff, and yet, still not use half the features it offers. Virtually every tool is simple to implement, but powerful in their scope. The only catch is you need to be able to think and be able to solve problems. Lightwave does not hold your hand and build an Emmy Award winning animation for you. Lightwave is a giant 3D canvas just waiting for a talented person to fill it with something extraordinary.

Lightwave is supported by a community of dedicated animators who want to see the product continue to flourish. There are numerous books, tapes, and websites to aid the budding animator. You could spend a lot less than the price of Lightwave and get a lot less capability. You could also spend a lot more and I, for one, am not convinced you would get more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lightwave is amazing
NewTek's lightwave 6.5 is a terrific program... in my opinion it is the easiest and fastest modeler around... the texture procedurals are just wonderfull. The program employs so many little features which go unnoticed but dramatically speed up creation time. Lightwave's interface is both easy to understand, and extremely efficient. Lightwave does not have little silly icons for each operation... rather they have words on buttons which are descriptors to what the button does... and on each button it tells you what the hotkey is to use that particular function. This naturally cuts the learning curve down very rapidly. Lightwave also has the simplest and fastest UV mapping functions i have ever seen. It is a WONDERFUL product and i recommend it anyone from the beginner 3d user to the seasoned expert ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

As a general rule, we let the 1.0 release of just about anything slip by and instead wait for the 1.1 version; we'd rather let someone else find the bugs. However, Carrara 1.0 from MetaCreations--although certainly not bug-free--is from a fairly reputable software house; is built on the knowledge of two popular 3-D applications, Infini-D and Ray Dream; and its maturity is evident.

Carrara is a powerful, robust, and easy 3-D modeling and animation application. Creating objects and scenes is relatively simple, as is adding lights and controlling cameras. If you've ever used Ray Dream Designer, you'll feel at home in Carrara's boxed universe.

But Carrara also offers features like procedural shaders, particles, an amazing array of light effects, and depth of field blur, to name a few. Interestingly, this first version doesn't seem to have motion blur (for objects that are moving in the scene) nor does it support field rendering (for output to video).

Still, it is an extremely handy tool. The quality of the Ray Tracer and Hybrid Ray Tracer render engines is very good, and the mode of working through a "storyboard" panel is unique and promising.

Carrara is an excellent package for many beginning to intermediate 3-D users. Its interface and documentation make it easy for beginners to move up the learning curve, while the feature set is rich enough for more advanced users who need to create complex 3-D graphics and animation. --Mike Caputo ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't throw your money away
I purchased Carrara on the premise that it would expand on the capabilities of Infini-D. Many of the advertised features just do not work. I've downloaded patches from metacreations web site and the program still does not work. There are more bugs in this program than a New York City apartment. Metacreations should be ashamed of themselves. How dare you put this piece of garbage on the market. Somebody call the police, I was robbed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could Be a Legend if It did everything advertised
I bought Carrara after using the likes of Lightwave 5 and 3D studio max r2.5. Carrara is a very good program but extremely buggy. Don't expect too much from its IK system as it cannot be used on a solid mesh nor does it support an object skeleton of any kind, the photoshop plugins don't work even though the package states that it does. The Z axis is mapped to the Y Axis which is extremely strange. There are no plugins to support other metacreations major titles ie: Poser and Bryce. Hopefully these setbacks will be fixed later. Adobe has purchased Carrara from Metacreations so I expect to see good things come out of it, however the manual, like most metacreations product manuals, leave much to be desired. This is a good product, but buggy and sometimes, down-right strange! If you want to be a professional and have the money, I would look elsewhere to Lightwave, Truespace, 3D studio max or Maya. Those are proven and powerful programs and support industry standards.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adjustment Needed.
I have mixed feelings about this product. First, Carrara is excellent. It gives you great power to produce superb graphic content. My main objection is about the company METACREATIONS. I bought both the 3D Suite and Carrara back in January of this year. I was qualified for a $200 rebate by making such a purchase. Here it is April and I have yet to see the rebate check. They still mail me promotional materials urging me to buy the very same programs that I bought and registered. You would think that a company producing computer software might at least have a current database of their customers and a history of their purchases. Evidently Metacrations does not. If any body from Metacreations is reading this I would like to say that you have excellent programmers and artists. But your marketing, management and customer relations definitely need improvement. And I would like to ask, Where is my rebate?

3-0 out of 5 stars Great ... but buggy.
The idea behind this application is fantastic - mix Bryce with 3D Studio Max or any other high-end 3D app.

Unfortunately, although it kind of works the way it should, being a v.1.0 product, it suffers from being very buggy. It crashes a lot - and I mean, a lot! When twisting or turning an object, it will usually start to chug slowly and then freeze and/or crash.

I am currently waiting for Metacreations to post a few patches on their site to make this the product it was supposed to be. But in spite of these problems, it is great fun to use, and the interface is brilliantly designed and easy to use. If you're used to other Metacreations products, then you will be able to create nice pics in a few mins with objects you have created in the past. ... Read more
