Amazon.com Review

Whether you're a 3-D novice or an experienced digital artist, Poser 5 makes it extraordinarily easy to create complete 3-D character stills and animations. Yet while this new edition definitely has advantages over previous versions, it is not without its glitches.

Pay attention to the system requirements on install. This program needs room and power. With more than the recommended 256 MB of RAM, rendering seems a bit sluggish in spite of the new FireFly micropolygon-based rendering engine. Though considering all Poser 5 does, immediate rendering of complex 3-D objects might be asking a bit much.

Working in Poser 5 is remarkably simple considering the capabilities of the software. The workspace is clean and easily customizable, with a majority of the tools accessible from floating palettes and windows. A collapsible library palette gives you fast access to all available content such as figures, poses, faces, and expressions. Plus, there is an entire CD of additional content including sound files, props, textures, templates, samples, and demos.

The interface is broken down into different rooms: Pose, Material, Face, Hair, Cloth, Setup, and Content. The new Face Room lets you map any face onto a 3-D head using just front and side photos of someone's face. Use the Hair Room to grow actual 3-D hair for figures in just a few steps. Go to the Cloth Room and convert objects into fully dynamic cloth with complete control of behavior. A full, revised reference manual is included.

So many things are under your control, it's hard not to want to tweak every little detail. However, on more than one occasion making an adjustment caused the software to lock up and quit. At other times, it would complete the changes, but the document window would be blank, making it necessary to close and reopen the program to continue work.

Instability issues aside, Poser 5 is loaded with fun tools, content, and utilities, making an upgrade worthwhile for serious users. Ease of use makes it a good choice for beginners and hobbyists as well. --Joshua Goldman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing results easily!
I'm a new Poser user, and pretty new to 3D though I've been an artist for more than 20 years. I've tried another 3D application a long time ago, and while I made some great looking things, it was more by accident than anything. I guess I never really figured out how to use that program.

A friend of mine convinced me to buy Poser 5, and I absolutely love it! When I drag on the character, it moves the way I expect it which means I can spend more time on my creativity and little time on trying to figure out "how" to create. What a breath of fresh air in what seems to be a world of creative products that require creative minds to try and be a technical wiz!

I'm still playing around with the advanced features. Materials looked daunting at first, but it didn't take me long to understand the basics of the process. I managed to make snakeskin material for the man's coat on my first pass. Impressive!...

I like the fact that even the truly advance features of Poser 5 can give some impressive results to a new kid on the block in the 3D world. I'm trying out the Hair room next.

2-0 out of 5 stars My review Oct 2002
I was very excited about Poser 5. It has many updated features and tools. I think the new render engine quality is incredible. However, expect to pay a high price in waiting. For me, it was too slow and I couldn't do anything else nor could I work on other models while the rendering was in progress. You'll be dying for a 4GHz PC for xmas.

I fooled around with the material room which is like nothing out there, so that's a big plus. I tried the hair room, but I was unable to get it to work even after several attempts. The cloth room also failed to produce any clothes so I guess I'll have to stick with my old collection for now. I wanted to try the face room but I didn't have any photo available.

During the course (I was using XP pro) Poser 5 crashed several times and I lost all my good efforts... so remember to save often. At one time, XP crashed and my XP has never crashed (so far that was).

As for models, there are a lot of free stuff, but I notice that most of it comes from Poser 4 and the Pro Pak - so if you have these products, your not getting much new.

Also, I found it very difficult to work with more than one model (people) in the same window - as they often interfered with each other or got selected in error or got posed in the wrong way. There is no undo history as in photoshop, so if you make mistakes, don't expect you can go back and fix them. Poser 5 doesn't allow you to open more windows - so I have to work with one model at a time which is time consuming. I expected much better than this.

My best option was to hide models. But not only do you have to hide the model, but also the clothes, shoes, etc which is time consuming, especially if you have more than one people in a scene.
Sometimes I try to hide one model and when I unhide it, parts of the model are missing (invisible). I unselect the Invisible Property for the model, but nothing happens. I have to start the model again from scratch.

I also have tons of 3d models which I accumulated over the years, which gets to be a mess (missing, wrong textures, etc). Poser 5 did nothing to auto install these or fine tune (manage) my massive inventory. The auto install feature is only if you use their content service. I was really upset about this because I feel they falsely advertised Poser 5's ability to automatically install 3d objects. This was one of the main reason I purchased Poser 5 - so it could clean up the thousands of poser files on my hard drive. No such luck.

Overall, I like Poser, but maybe not at a price ... So here are my Cons:
Poser 5 crashes at times or freezes.
Only one window is available - I found it difficult to work with more than one model per window.
Poser 5 doesn't find and install your models - you must buy models through their service.
The render system is very, very slow - No multi-tasking is available.
No network or batch rendering is available.
The hair room doesn't work
The cloth room didn't work.

Here are my pros:
Render system is fantasic.
I like the material room much.
And everything works pretty much as it does with Poser 4 pro.

I understand there are two updates available to fix problems associated with Poser 5 and that some files were missing, so I will check these out at a later time.
I would highly recommend Poser 5 but ONLY IF they improved it; however, we may have to wait on Poser 8.

4-0 out of 5 stars Prepare to go back to school
As many people have noted you can do amazing things with Poser, however be prepared because learning to do those amazing things is an education in itself.

Downloading updates to your software is very important because the finished Poser 5 product was not really finished when it went on the market. You will find yourself surfing the web to find tutorials which are available in abundance simply because the supplied manual was no where near to being satisfactory.

Within the shipped software package you have the ability to change textures, add custom created hair, change or alter created clothing, and even add animation to your figures but again its not easy and requires hours of surfing the web and following tutorials that you must find yourself.

A very good site to see some fine finished Poser art is www.renderosity.com I have some of my own completed art work there search for zman1 in the author section. Why you're at renderosity visit the tutorial section and check out a few of them because this is what you're going to have to learn to do what you want to do. Learning to use this software package is very much like learning AutoCAD with the right education you can create things that are actually worth something monetarily however be prepared to invest large amounts of your time before you ever get close to being there.

Lastly and as before mentioned your going to either want additional clothing, characters, hair, props, etc.. you can buy some really nice ones and you can find allot of them free at places like the site listed above, you can also go one step farther and create them yourself with other expensive programs I use Zbrush however many others are out there. Environment rendering software makes a nice complement to this package such as Vue 4 or Bryce 5 (Bryce is available at www.daz3d.com now they bought all the rights and its very inexpensive compared to other packages).

Good luck and I hope you have lots of time to burn because your going to need it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too bad this is the only dedicated char modeling tool....
First off, I do wanna say that there are things about this version that are far better, but not much. My first complaint is the interface, you would think after a while they would scrap the "Pretty" Interface for something more functional. It is cluttered and sloppy. Second, the system requirements for this are WAY off. I am running a pentium 2.4ghz machine with 1gig of memory, geforce 4 card, and 120gb hard drive, and this program crawls at best. And every now and then, my computer just can't take any more, and shuts it down. With no warning. The character modeling may be better, but it is not for beginners whatsoever. So if you are not familier with Poser or any other 3d modeling programs, you best avoid this and start out easy with something like truespace or Vue D'esprit.

My advice is to anyone wanting to get thier hands on this, wait until Curious Labs decides to let people try out a demo, if I had had the chance to try a demo, I would not have paid money on this.

I have been working in 3d design for years, and am a registered 3d studio max user, I have also used programs such as Maya and Softimage in different studios I have worked for. My advice to Curious labs? Release a different edition of this software, with a less graphical interface and more functionality and optimization.

This program has the potential to be AMAZING, if you have the patience and have never heard the word "Deadline" in your life...

2-0 out of 5 stars The sinking ship!
Some of the writers here may me shocked, but Poser 5 is the reason, why Curious Labs is now a sinking ship! This software is full of bugs and the render times are much too long. Two companies now show a reaction and publish their own software: DAZ Studio and Horus3D. When you look at the website of Horus3D, you'll see that a Vicky3-Figure can be raytraced within 3 Seconds with transparency! Poser? How long do you need to do this? So nobody should tell me, that Poser 5 is that slow, because it isn't possible to be faster! The main-programmers of Curious Labs has left the company after the Poser 5 disaster. The community of Poser is really fed up with this version and all it's patches! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Creative Suite puts Creative juices to work
The Adobe Creative Suite brings many tried, tested and true programs to a new level of functionality and integration. The popular programs, Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive, Acrobat and InDesign have been redesigned to make users more efficient and streamline the work. The latest addition to the Adobe family, Version Cue, also makes an appearance. Version Cue is a great server program that allows multiple users to edit and update files simultaneously. 5-0 out of 5 stars Designers Need the Apps and the Price is Good
Everything is in here. All of the design apps are on two installer CDs. Any designer -- whether web or print -- has at least a few of the applications in this suite. You only need to decide if the price is right, and if your current upgrades would make the purchase worthwhile.

Buying this suite is the equivalent of a corporate employee owning Microsoft Office. Adobe's name now equals design software. Knowing Adobe's product line is simply required knowledge. Print houses will accept and produce your files without problems, and multiplatform file transfer can be completed with minimum processing time.

For me, I was using a dated version of Illustrator, PageMaker 6.5, Photoshop Elements. The additional programs and new versions of what I had made the purchase a no-brainer. I also primarily use Dreamweaver, but learning GoLive will help me as I meet with clients. Outside of InDesign and GoLive, every application here is the industry standard, and those two programs are strongly coming into their own.

To explain the virtues of each individual application is not necessary. You know the benefits of Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and GoLive. InDesign might be new to some of the veterans, but it is beyond a replacement for the inferior PageMaker, and is a force of its own.

With the quality increase of InDesign, designers are now able to choose something besides Quark for their page layout application. Including InDesign here made the purchase for me easy. I have no reason now to piecemeal together my software base.

Each application has all of the features that they have when independently purchased.

I fully recommend "Adobe Creative Suites Premium." Designers need these apps, and so your decision is only about price and value.

1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE OF THIS PRODUCT
I have spent 9 hours in 2 days on the phone with Dell to try to install this piece of s**t. Version Cue will not install nor will photo shop. No 800 number for support from Adobe. Paid for call and recieved many voice ads for products and was told if I need support call at 'top of the hour'. Dell says the problem is in the installer. Adobe Foroums have pointed to the same but no suggestion has worked. Guess I will work on amazon to try to return it for a full refund, it was shipped defective.

1-0 out of 5 stars BE AFRAID! BE VERY AFRAID!
Windows XP users beware! You'll need lots of bug killer with this supposed "upgrade" - especially the GoLive module.

Speaking as a long time user of Adobe software (Photoshop since version 3.0) this is the most bloated and unstable iteration ever. The added goodies in Photoshop CS would be great, if my (quite adequate) Dell Workstation didn't freeze up every other minute.

Most annoying of all is a screen redraw problem most visible in GoLive CS; a problem that makes GoLive essentially unusable. If you plan to use GoLive - most especially if you have an NVidia graphics card - visit Adobe.com and look through the GoLive User Forum BEFORE you buy the CS version. LOTS of good reading there.

Adobe has (reluctantly) admitted the screen redraw problem to be a "bug" that they are "working" on... but jeez! Wouldn't that bug have been far better stomped on BEFORE Adobe CS was released onto loyal, trusting Adobe users??

To sum it up - BUYER BEWARE! Check out the Adobe Forums before you shell out your hard earned for Adobe CS, because that's where you'll get the real truth about real-world use. Download the trial version of CS if you can - maybe it will run for you... but if not, no money lost.

For now, I'm thinking it's back to my previous versions so I can at least get some work done. In fact, it's so bad - I'm beginning to consider getting a MAC! Aaaargh!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Lovin It
I have had the new Adobe Suite for a few weeks now and I am lovin it. I have been onboard since version 4.0 and I must say that the CS upgrade of Photoshop is the most signifigant ever. I use the RAW plug in with my digital Photos now, more then anything else. RAW and 16 bit editing have changed my workflow forever. The LEns Blur filter, the Photo filters, and the awesome filter gallery are extremly useful too. I do not use Illustrator much, I think that I will use it even less now that Photoshop can type on a path, but I did play with the new 3D tool, it is pretty cool and I can't wait to implement it into my designs. I have no opinion of InDesign, I haven't had the need to use it yet. What I have read about it is that the CS version is the final nail in the coffin for Quark. Go Live is great, I appreciate the Smart Objects, and Adobe has finally cleaned up the code that Go Live writes. At first Iwas peeved that they took out Dynamic editing, but I am okay with it now. I use it side by side with my old copy of Dreamweaver so I can get the best of both worlds. Go Live is more designer friendly.
Version Cue is another can't live without addition. All of the sudden, I am organized. Well I could go on forever about why I love the new suite, Adobe did a great job with this one. If you are a designer or student buy this suite, chances are you are already planning too. ... Read more

FCE/HD bringing Soundtrack and LiveType to the hobbyist is one of the more generous steps Apple has taken since they brought us FCE1. This is a very big and very useful addition to FCE allowing us to sync audio/music and titles much cleaner to our videos than we could before.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't forget to factor in manuals to the final price.
I grew up on Adobe products. They used to include great manuals and tutorials. Now I have paid more and received less. I am trying to learn how to use GoLive but the online manual doesn't make a whole lot of sense. How come a printed manual isn't included? Oh, I have to pay more for it? How come I seem to be paying for printing costs then? Customer support? To get real help I'll have to pay for it. I used Adobe Premiere for Mac but that product got abandoned. I will not buy another Adobe product until they either give more or charge less. If you are getting started with web design I would suggest going somewhere else. That being said... Illustrator and Photoshop are both still great products and the upgrades were easy for me to understand (probably because the last versions I had included a printed manual and tutorials). Let's face it, if it wasn't for OS X, I would have just stuck to the older versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, and PageMaker and bought Dreamweaver instead. Photoshop CS - Classroom in a Book = $45. Illustrator CS - Classroom in a Book = $31.50. GoLive CS - Classroom in a Book = $45. InDesign - Classroom in a Book = $45. Acrobat Pro - Classroom in a Book = $45. $211.50 in manuals right there. Its a good product but it keeps on costing you in time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent design software
No software is perfect, but Adobe comes as close to well designed, intuitive, user-friendly software as I have ever seen. Photoshop and Illustrator have always been the industry standards, and here they are both improved - particularly the digital photographer will be happy with the new photo filters in Photoshop CS, and the much improved file browser and the new filter gallery are also excellent additions. As far as publishing programs are concerned, InDesign is a greatly more intuitive program than Quark at a fraction of its cost, and because its pallets function much the same as in Photoshop and Illustrator, it is an easily acquired program if you are familiar with Adobe software.

I use these programs on a Mac OS X platform and for me they are very stable. I have had none of the crashing problems or tech support difficulties that another reviewer of the Adobe Creative Suite has had. For anyone using many design programs at once, enough RAM is always a requirement for smooth operation. But if you have enough RAM and a Mac platform, you should have no significant problems at all. PCs crash more by their nature because their operating system is not as stable as a Mac's, but still Adobe products are not only more intuitive than Microsoft's (for example), they also will crash far less on a PC than most other types of software (like Microsoft's).

Photoshop and Illustrator have always defined the state of the art for photo editing and raster graphic software respectively, and here Adobe is carrying on the tradition. InDesign looks as though it is fast replacing Quark in the publishing industry as well, so if you are a creative professional you will be more than happy in the end to own the Adobe Creative Suite. What else would you use?

1-0 out of 5 stars i used to like adobe...
...then i needed to contact their technical support because illustrator crashes when you try to label layers. they go out of their way to make it as difficult as possible. no email support. instead you have to ring an area code 206 number and wait until some overworked undertrained person tells you to reinstall the product or the operating system... very helpful. just like their software.

i'll look elsewhere the next time i look for an illustration package or a graphics editor. and i won't even bother discussing their inept page layout program.

4-0 out of 5 stars glad I got it
I just bought it off of AMazon a week ago (which is the lowest price for the full version I have been able to find so far) and IM glad I did. For new people to the software, you may wanna stay with your older version for a bit and just get used to it before shelling out the money, but if your serious about design and making your workflow work to the max for you, this new collection is a must. Tight integration and the help of the version Cue additional file managment software will help even the messiest designer keep thier files inline. If design is what you want to do, then theres no better package to get. Ive been using Photoshop for years and Illustrator and Indesign for a while now and this is defenitly an inovation in design.
I gave it 4 stars due to small problems I had installing the whole suite at once. I have never had the problem with anything else and it was frustrating. But after that its smooth saling. ... Read more
