Amazon.com Review

If you want to improve your typing skills, then Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 15 could be the perfect instructor for you. This title is easy to install and begins by requiring you to specify your age, your type of keyboard and your typing goal (how many words per minute). Lessons are customized to your specific needs and you are kept apprised of development with plenty of progress reports.

There are a whole host of exercises on this program, many complete with on-screen hands that type along with you to demonstrate where your fingers should go on the keyboard. The opportunities that you are given to customize this program make it equally effective for beginners, busy executives and admin assistants who want to improve their skills.

There are some people who are probably put off using software programs to learn to type because they find them too impersonal. One of the main strengths of this program is that it goes out of its way to create a traditional classroom feel. You get friendly voiceovers as Mavis Beacon introduces herself, shows you around and encourages you to improve your skills.

The program teaches in either Spanish or English, but it’s not all work. In the game hallway, there are eight entertaining games which help to build your typing speeds and accuracy. In one game, you click on keyboard characters to make colorful bugs quickly disappear.

Overall this is a very slick typing program which offers plenty of variety to keep you interested and the games are enjoyable enough to keep enticing you back.--Justin Hunt, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Program Is Addictive
I love this program, and have logged over (can you believe it) 14 hours of total lesson typing time so far (think about it, that is huge). I will probably double that before I stop using it. I am now typing between 22 words a minute for really hard lessons (lots of punctuation and numbers) to close to 40 for easy words and sentences. I am thrilled. I am nearly 40 years old, and to finally be able to type is really a dream come true. Thanks Mavis.

Here is the good and the bad.

Mavis goes a little fast in the beginning to learn the keys. You might need to open another user and just start over again to get more drill time before advancing. This is easily done, and no big deal. Anyway, more drill is always good.

Once I learned the keys, this is where Mavis really shines. Mavis encourages you with her sweet voice, and I like that. She always varies the lessons, so it stays interesting and challenging They really crammed so many different texts into Mavis, that there is always new material to learn. Riddles, Shakespeare, famous quotes, bizarre difficult word lessons, cute stories, and more. She is almost limitless in this regard. Sure some lessons get repeated, but there is SO MUCH material, I am always amazed that there is more and more new stuff I have yet to type and I have type a solid 14 hours so far. This is a Big Plus.

After time, Mavis get addictive, I really look forward to sitting down and typing. It stays fun, and this is key. By getting me to type a lot with it, I keep improving. No other program has as many lessons in it, and will stay as interesting. It is not really the best graphics of all the typing programs, but it really does have the most material to learn from, and done in a way that you slowly keep getting better.

I guarantee you this, if you are disciplined and do not look at the keys, and if you regularly sit down and work with Mavis for 10 minutes to an hour a day, you will become a typist for sure. I never though I could learn at my age, thanks Mavis!

3-0 out of 5 stars A typing program that actually works
I was a little dubious when I first purchased this program but after using it for several days I noticed an improvement in my typing speed. The typing lessons slowly pull you along introducing new keys while reinforcing ones you have already learned. Intermixed within the lessons are typing games to break the monotomy, along with a constant voice over (which can be turned off) from Mavis Beacon herself, providing tips and encouragement. Fingering for almost every key is explained and Mavis Beacon Teached Typing provides a visual keyboard with transparent hands at the bottom of the screen to help with positioning your hands.

Overall the lessons are easy to follow and provide enough variation so that you can sit down for 30 minutes a day and except to see a reasonable amount of improvement after a while. The most annoying aspect about the lesson formula is the transcription lessons where you need to consult the manual. The major problem being that there is no hardcopy of the manual, it's all on the CD making these lessons rather pointless, but they can at least be skipped. Mavis Beacon also has some technial issues. Firstly, the resolution needs some improvement, considering the day and age Borderbund should have spent some extra money and improved the graphics. If you're running this program in 1024 X 768 you'll notice a lot of pixlation which can make reading some of the letters a little difficult at times. Fortunatly the program allows you to resize the window to half size, improving the resolution but now all the information is half size too. Once you install Mavis Beacon you will notice that a program called the Mavis Beacon Personal Typing Coach is added as well. This program contains a small of host of rather useless applications such as providing you with finger positions for keys after you type them and telling you your typing speed. The most annoying being the Ergonomic Break Scheduler which constantly reminds you to take a break, mercily you can switch off this feature.

While Mavis Beacon will not turn you into a 100 word typist overnight it will improve your typing if you practice enough and help you with the basics needed for good typing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mavis Becon has Defects
Firstly, This program has major flaws. If it were not for the fact that compusa pushes it then it would not have even as many customers. It has a defect that causes an 'ergonomic break' window to pop up when the program is not running (at least for windows XP). Second, the programmers at broderbound were too lazy to switch one of the internal screens/windows to say something '...Mavis Mecon 12' when in fact it is version 15. They put makup on an old program and are selling it for much more. The lessons are alright but I am sure that this program is not the best- It simply can't be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money...
Especially if you are a beginner. There's no manual, no documentation, the lesson plans don't include drills, and the onscreen moving fingers on the keys are too opaque -- you can't tell which finger is on the desired key. Some simple coding to change the color of the finger along with the key would be really helpful.

The beginning lessons are too advanced (even if you tell the program you are in the children's age/lesson range,) and omit the very basic instructions that a true beginner needs. Add a few annoying installation quirks (manual placement of desktop icons, and a "personal coach" that automatically runs in the background) and you're left with software that is a total waste of time and cash.

The whole program is bulky and clumsy -- and if you are using Windows XP, expect to see momentary freeze-ups of your monitor as the program lurches in and out of execution.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dumb DOS program, no DVORAK support.
How hard would it be to support DVORAK? A hundred lines of code would probably do the trick, since no new graphics would be needed. Just cross-reference the keys to make finger positions right, and you're done. They're resting on their laurels, selling a clumsy DOS program that takes over your monitor as if it were still 1989. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an wonderful program for todays internet savy youth
Typing Tutor 10 is an excellent program for kids and adults of all ages to practice thier skill levels in typing. It has 8 games that are very addicting to help you type faster. It is very challenging and you want to excel in your typing word score everyday. You can type segments of books or magazine articles geered to your talents and skills. This program is worth purchasing and is absolutely the best money spent for learning keyboard skills.

2-0 out of 5 stars Claims to be for children...
I bought this based upon its high review rating and its claim to be for children. It does have 8 games. However, it does not provide lessons at a truly beginner level. It's first "beginner" lesson assumes you have already had practice with the "asdfgjkl;" keys. Learning these 8 keys in the same single lesson is too much for your average 11 and under child. After having done some more research, it looks like "Typing Pal Junior" is a better program for beginning children. It teaches two keys at a time, starting with the "fj" keys. It also has dictation practice, in the form of stories you have to type as the computer dictates them to you. This provides the added benefit of spelling practice for your child. It only has two games, but the dictated stories make up for it.

My children may eventually use Typing Tutor 10, but only after they have worked with Typing Pal Junior for awhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Training Program
TT10 is a simple and very effective training program. This program is user friendly, intuitive and a great tool for learning and improving touch typing. The colour scheme within the screens, graphics and font size are nice and the Navigation is simple and intuitive. I have not completly explored all the lessons but am very satisfied with the software and my progress so far. The games are funny and provide a good break. The product is marked for Win 95/98 on the package but I did not have any problems on Win ME so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for adults new to the use of a computer keyboard
Typing Tutor 10 is an educational CD-ROM software hallmarked by easy-to-use lessons complete with keyboard and handguides, split screens, backgrounds, music, and web-like navigation. The program introduces beginning students to the keyboard and the Internet. They learn to type the keyboard and numeric pad characters using the traditional "Home Row Method", as well as become familiar with both the look and feel of email and Internet sites. As they advance, students increase their confidence and dexterity with customized lessons and challenging games, all enhanced with animation and rewarding interactive feedback to motivate them to build their skills and advance at a rapid pace. In addition to classroom instructional use, Typing Tutor 10 is also ideal for adults new to the use of a computer keyboard and needing to acquire competency and confidence in its use for their computer programs, projects, and usages. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Some of it's good, some of it's bad...
OK, it's a fun way for my young kids to learn the basics of typing - splatting bugs by pressing the right keys is pretty fun. The price was unbeatable.

The down side: It teaches only basics - letters and numbers. No shifted keys. No ten-key. It also runs only with the CD in the drive. It is also very difficult to install on Win2000/WinXP - you have to create a shortcut on your desktop for the setup.exe program on the CD, change the shortcut's compatibilty mode to Win95, then install the thing. Yeesh. BTW, don't accidentally hit (or rest your wrist on) the Windows key while you're typing; it royally messes up the color palette - to the point of having to quit and start over.

It got my kids started with typing in a fun way, but it was a bit of a pain to get it working. You win some, you lose some. This was a draw.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Available but...
We tested a variety of typing software programs and Mavis was clearly the best. All typing software programs purchased had software glitches including version 12. It is unfortunate to lose the "History" of your typing progress. Our program locked up regularly and we needed to sign in under another user. SAD..

2-0 out of 5 stars Unsuitable for younger children!
Although Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing is marked as being suitable for children 8 and up, I can not recommend it for elementary and middle schoolers. The child is required to have a typing speed goal of 25 WPM, and 25WPM must be achieved with each lesson before the child is allowed to progress to a higher level. My 9-year-old is stuck typing "asdf" and "jkl;" until he is crying tears of boredom. After 50 minutes of practice, he had brought his speed up from 6WPM to 10WPM, so that 25WPM goal still seemed a long way away.

I would prefer to see a younger child able to type homework mistake free at 15WPM, than have one who refuses to learn to type because he can't take being forced to practice "asdf" for endless hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best
I first encountered Mavis while going to college to learn the computer. Many people in the class didn't know how to type yet.I did but it had been quite a few years and I needed to work on my speed and accuracy. This was an excellent program.Easy to understand for everyone even beginners. My typing speed increased so much I broke 100 wpm.I can't say enough about this program except that I would encourage everyone to try it out especially for brush up courses if you are testing for that special job.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Buggy" for sure!
I gave this software as a gift.It looks like I'm going to have to buy another--NOT another copy of this one!A few wrong keys hit and the CD has been wiped clean and there is no help to be had.

Mavis Beacon--if you see this review--please HELP!

2-0 out of 5 stars It seems inconsistent at beginner level - and buggy
I am an old hand trying to finally touch type - so I'm using the beginner level and just learning the lower-case alphabetics. I amusing the Delux 11 version.

a) The Chameleon game breaks after a while - intermittent but if you play Chameleon say 10 times in a row it seems guaranteed to happen - but not in same place - that when you hit a wrong key, instead of waiting for right key and continuing it breaks out of the game.

b) There's at least one case of a double-quote instead of a single quote in an exercise (we're nowhere near at point where double quote has been mentioned - it's a bug)

c) The messages are either very very smart or very very dumb - I get praise and admonishment - mainly the former - but disconnected in any way I can see to what I'm doing - for example - I get an error-free score fastest I've done all session and I get a "you didn't do very well". I freak out and get 7 errors and abysmal time and occasionally I get "well done, etc etc".

d) Again, either very sophisticated or a bug - I get taken back to earlier levels time and time again - "lets try some new keys" (but I was introduced to them yesterday and once already this morning) - it does a few exercises with the right subset of keys, including the new ones, and then flips back to where I really am with those keys and more. Puzzling.

e) The games with moving jerky, hard-to-read characters (Chameleon, Sea Breeze) are headache producing. I always get exactly the same unhelpful message on Sea Breeze that seems unconnected to what I'm actually doing - it looks like just a fixed message "you failed cos you need rhythm not speed".

Maybe this all gets much better when you've passed the beginner level - I hope so. I was expecting some repetitive pieces so you'd get familiar with short sequences - es ed ing and so on - but no such luck - it seems to emphasize randomness. A bit dissapointing for the most popular typing program in its 11th edition - I feel I must have somehow gotten their 1st edition by mistake - by now surely there's tons of analysis of what keys you get right, what sequences you stumble over - but it aint obvious. I can't see a place to say this on the Mattel site - no fixes or FAQ or anything else I'd have emoted over there first. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a huge disappointment ...
Did the people writing the rave reviews on Middle School Advantage really get the same product we received? The five CD's included in the 2003 edition are just a packaging of software titles produced by independent agents, with little attention given to consistency, quality, branding, graphics, etc. across the 10 subjects.

The math sections -- what we originally bought it for -- are nothing more than text book pages reproduced online. There is nothing engaging, exciting in the material -- nothing to motivate a willing student to learn or discover more. The "interactive" option is laughable -- a voice reads what appears on screen.

Don't waste your time or money on this Middle School series...

4-0 out of 5 stars This has great advatages!!!!!
If you want to improve something or study for a test you need this product! It is great!! It'll help middle schooler's grades improve and it is kinda fun! You really need to try this product!

5-0 out of 5 stars Virtual Teacher of the Year
Middle School Advantage definitely deserves the Virtual Teacher of the Year Award... if there is one. This program actually explains your school subjects better than a real teacher! In the math section, you can read pages that explain the concepts, look at explanitory examples, and take tests. It is extremely easy to learn Spanish, too. The computer even pronounces the words better than your school Spanish teacher. Middle School Advantage tests you in every subject to make sure you fully understand all the concepts. I never really liked to study, but Middle School Advantage makes me eager to learn. Every night I sit at my computer and learn a new concept.
