4-0 out of 5 stars Jumpstart Advanced toddler
We bought this as a Christmas present for our son that just turned 2. We were looking for an educational computer game for him and we already had Reader Rabbit Toddler (which he loves). When I first started Jumpstart Adv. Toddler I thought it was way too simple, then I discovered that most activities have 2 levels. Level 1 is pretty basic and doesn't require the kids to do a whole lot...my son was very bored with this. Level 2 is much better...in fact it is more advanced than Reader Rabbit. Most of the activities do not require toddlers to click on the mouse, but if you can click it goes faster. I was surprised by how fast my son figured out the activities. He can do most everything by himself, but he still needs me to help him navigate some. This package comes with 3 cd's - school time, song time and art time. THe song time cd has several fun songs that he just loves. Overall I really like this game and have found it to be very educational. As soon as my son has mastered clicking the mouse we will be getting the preschool version.

5-0 out of 5 stars JumpStart Study Helpers Math Booster

The [low price] is "right" - please buy it - once again this old Grandma is happy to be able to send my first grader, and my second grader back to school this year with this GREAT study tool. Knowledge Adventure can be very proud of these two programs ther Jump Start Study Helpers Math Booster and their Jump Start Study Helpers Spelling Bee - buy them both and enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars JumpStart Spanish a winner
My 5 year old loves her new JumpStart Spanish program. She has learned to count in spanish and her colors so far. Very fun games and rewards. She is really picking things up fast. We have not had any real computer problems, it has locked up once, but that has happened on other software as well. The sound works well. For the price I would recommend this as a beginning spanish program.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter simply loves it!!!!
My 2 year old loves this set of CDs. I found that it reinforces all the things we are teaching her.... shapes, colors, numbers the ABC. The duck that sings is very sweet to their ear. I found it sooo great I am buying it for my daughter's school so the other kids can benefit as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jump Start 4TH GRADE ADVANCED
I rented this software from the Library. It is a 3 disc program. My 3rd grader (almost 4th grader) loves the Ultimate Field Trips and Mystery Club volume 3. The fundamentals disc is a little too hard for her right now, so it is challenging. I played it because it looked fun and it was fun for me to play. I love the "mystery" tone of the software. I like these programs because there are fun games that do not get boring, and while your kids are playing the games, they are also learning a lot. I am going to purchase this software and the 3rd grade ADVANCED program so my child can review through the summer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY IT YOU'LL LOVE IT
I can tell you all about Garfields Typing Pal. It is an excellent software. It has exercises that help you learn how to locate keys with out looking at the keyboard. It also has a section on 10-keying, oral dictations and ergonomics. As well as written texts for practice and games. I first came across Garfield typing pal online after downloading the free demo off the internet.I knew after that I had to get the full version. However, I was unable to find the full version anywhere else in the U.S. besides amazon.com. It's great for adults who know how to type but want to improve their performance as well as those individuals who are just getting started. BUY IT YOU'LL LOVE IT.

1-0 out of 5 stars Typing Instructor Deluxe fizzles
The Typing Instructor Deluxe software was initially fun and performed well. However, the program turned out to be prone to errors and customer support was uninformative, even though they were aware of the software problems.Don't waste your money by buying this program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amendment to Previous Bad Rating
Though the previous version I had (Vers 8) would NOT work properly on my Dell Windows XP, I have just installed VERS 9, which WORKS FINE! (Don't know why they show so many diff versions, makes very confusing). The Program is EXCELLENT for improving typing speed and accuracy, setting up very methodical training level lesson plans starting from the expertise level you establish (it keeps track of your progress), AND makes the whole experience fun by having lots of fun typing games and other areas you can also go to when you want to take a break from the lessons.FAR SUPERIOR to Mavis Beacon's - makes increasing your speed fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great typing program!
I have been using the Mavis Beacon typing program (which is also great) for a while. I got bored doing the same things so I purchased this program. I'm glad I did. It took about 7 minutes to load, but I won't have to use the disk again. By the way, I use Windows 2000 OS, and it didn't crash my pc.

This program has about 10 games (I play with 5 of them). It also has a magazine section that lets you choose from 9 different topics. Once you choose the topic, it gives you at least 40 other titles under that topic to choose from. Each title has at least 3 pages of information for you to practice typing.

I don't use the beginning typer's lessons. I just finished taking a class that taught me the basics, and the basics now bore me. I use this program to improve my typing skills, and it seems to be working.

My analysis: Buy this program if you want to learn how to type or improve your typing skills. It will be one of the best investments you've ever made.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY UNLESS SERIOUS BUGS HAVE BEEN FIXED!
Though I just finished installing 30 other programs on my computer without a problem, VERSION 15 of THIS PROGRAM NOT ONLY CRASHED on my Windows 98 computer, but IT CRASHED MY HARD DRIVE and TOLD ME I NEED TO REINSTALL MY OPERATING SYSTEM!When I contacted their tech support, I was told there had been many calls from people having similar problems, and that I needed to not only download and install fonts, but had to download and install 4 OTHER UPDATES, including Internet Explorer, even though this computer would not be connecting to the Internet! If you do not know how to fix problems this program causes, do not buy this product unless they have fixed these fatal bugs! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can teach a 6 year old to type!!!
I bought this as a gift for my six year old who wanted to learn to type on the computer, tried other products at the library and the librarian recommended this one. I installed this easily on an old pentium 166 running Windows 98. It runs better than most kids software. It does have some issues with typing too fast or too slow but frankly I think it helps you place your fingers cleanly and accurately.

The GREAT thing about this program is that my six year old loves it and it is teaching him good typing skills. The graphics are very interactive, if you mistype the characters (called bladers) perform comparable to your performance. The different events, cones, cow jumping (a real hoot), half pipe, sidewalk and speed skating concentrate on different typing skills. You jump more cows and do more flips over them if you are more accurate in that event. The sidewalk event requires both speed and accuracy and is definitely a challenge. The skater skates along as words are displayed for your to type. One mistake and he runs into an obstacle and flys to fall flat on his face. The graphics are redundent but it motivates the heck out of my six year old.

If you are older and too computer savvy you may not like this. Particularly if you can already type. (Though I could see how using it would improve my skills). For kids just learning to type it makes a very boring (remember high school typing class, before computers, for those readers over 30)really a lot of fun.

Teenaged kids who watch too much TV and play ultra action type video games will also find this pretty mundane. But they really should learn good typing skills anyway and this would help them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Non-functional, out-of-date software
Marketing gives the impression that this is a 3D interactive, when in fact it is not. After the interactions occur, and sometimes during, you are shown a canned quicktime movie. Same movie may be shown over and over and over...

Any program that requires Windows users to back off of Quicktime 6 and install 2.5 from the CD-ROM is useless.

Tried it on our Mac also and found that if you type too fast, it misses your keystrokes, and counts the stroke as an error! If you type too soon, even after the visual prompt is displayed, it misses the keystroke.

Distracting visuals and too great a visual reliance on the keyboard chart at the expense of the source text hinders learning. IF you make a single mistake, you lose and have to start over.

This program may have functioned well in its day (though I don't see how that could be), but it is out-of-date, in addition to being very poorly designed.

STAY AWAY!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great typing program
My children both think this is a great program. My almost-10 year old daughter likes it much more than Mavis Beacon that they use at school and my 7 year old son can even use it. They both have improved their typing skills enormously while having fun at the same time. I'd recommend this program without reservation!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
My seven-year-old was using it and actually improving after just a few screens, although the repetitive "fjfj fjf jf jf" style gets boring for a child with the length of pages required to type (there are typically about four lines per screen of characters like that). I think there should be some extra breaks between long sessions. I think the repetition is necessary for effective learning, but something fun needs to go in between. This is, after all, for kids.

On the positive side, it gives an initial assessment test to determine where your skills are. Then the goals for that user are set based on the assessment. There are a few fun games that use the same skills that are being taught, and the games appear to automatically challenge at a level that matches the skill of the player (again, based on the testing in the lesson part of the program).

My son was a little frustrated early on because the initial assessment test is rather critical to a non-typist. Although the girl in the program says something like "You did great," the low words per minute (WPM) and high number of errors displayed on the screen seem to speak louder than she does and may be somewhat discouraging. But we maintained a positive attitude because I told him it didn't matter how well he did on that test; it only wanted to see his beginning point. It's important for a parent to be involved in order to give encouragement in some places and a push in others. It really enhances the learning and helps to get through the tough spots. And younger kids, of course, enjoy the involvement and interest of their parents.

If the program worked properly, there wouldn't be much of a negative side. The requirement of an older version of Quicktime is a valid concern if you are using a newer version. But I didn't have any version before, so I didn't care whether the game required the current or an older version. But the program does do a system search for other versions before installing Quicktime and tells you that it can't coexist with another version.

I would've probably given the program four stars if not for the fact that it kept crashing when coming out of any of the games. And when it crashes, it forgets the entire session. Which means that any progress gained is lost, and the child must go through the same exercises a second time. The first time this happened, my son begrudgingly went through the beginning lessons AGAIN (I was beside him cheering and encouraging, which helped keep his attitude somewhat positive). But when the program crashed a second time after he had gone through those early lessons the second time, he wasn't the least bit interested in going through them a third time, and I didn't blame him. The crash was effectively punishing him for working hard and doing well.

The bottom line? If you can buy it from someplace where you can return it, take the chance. And if it works on your computer, you've got a good four-start program. If it doesn't work, return it and your losses are minimal. Good luck. But to Knowledge Adventure/Jumpstart: FIVE YEARS is a long time between releases of any program; it's time for a new version, or at least an update.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comparison to Jumpstart 3rd Grade
Nobody has really compared this program to Jumpstart 3rd Grade, which features the same charactors, so I've decided to do it. Perhaps the best metaphore is that Jumpstart 3rd Grade is like a theatricaly released film and Jumpstart Typing is like a direct-to-video release. For one thing, there is no CGI animation in Jumpstart Typing, like there is in Jumpstart 3rd Grade. For another there is a lote less at stake in the plot. Jumpstart Typing isn't really like a prequel or a sequel, just a different adventure in the same world.

The only recuring charactors are Prof. Spark, Polly and Botley. This is a bit disapointing that we don't see any other charactors from Jumpstart 3rd Grade, especially since we only meet one new charactor. Jumpstart Typing is set at Sparks Stadium like Jumpstart 3rd Grade is set at Mystery Mountain. Mystery Mountain is the Sparks' home. Sparks Stadium is the first stadium for interplanetary keyborad competition, though this seems to contradict with Botley's statement in Jumpstart 3rd Grade that Prof. Spark hasn't ever found any alien transmissions to decode. All the recuring charactors look like they do in Jumpstart 3rd, probably beecause they recycled animations from Jumpstart 3rd Grade, for instance, note that Botley's pose in the main stadium scene is exactly the same seen on the 2nd Floor of Mystery Mountain in Jumpstart 3rd Grade. However, new charactors look true to the animation in Jumpstart 3rd Grade.

Overall, the charactor's personalities are true to Jumpstart 3rd Grade. Botley and Prof. Spark are entirly in charactor, but then again, Prof. Spark hardly appears in either. Polly is a bit out of charactor, she is nicer. One could atribute this to the fact that her father is at Sparks Stadium, though we don't see him 'till the end, rather than far away at some convention. However, she locks Coach Qwerty in the trophy room for the same reason she sends all those robots back in time.

Acadamically, this is sort of Mavis Beacon for Kids and the is the setup is similar to Jumpstart 3rd Grade. However, though Jumpstart 3rd Grade is set rather fluidly, Jumpstart Typing's setup is rather convoluted. We take Lessons and Timed Typing Tests to fine "strength" to play the games, but to win we have take the Timed Typing Tests. Playing the games is useless, unless you want a bunch stupid medals!

In conclution, this is game is fairly effective at teaching keyboarding, though better at teaching speed typing than the basics. However, it fails to capture the fun of Jumpstart 3rd Grade.

1-0 out of 5 stars Defective Program
This program displayed upside down on all three of our computers. Knowledge Adventure Customer Service was absolutely terrible -- basically nonexistent.

3-0 out of 5 stars great!
Oh my! I learned to type so fast, it works so well!!! You are in a gym, and you have to rescue the coach. You get cards to unlock him from a little jail, and at the end you get a trophy. 4-0 out of 5 stars good, but flawed
This software program is really good for multiple users who all want to learn to type; people who are working to better themselves through self-initiative. But it is very poor for parents who want to give their children a series of goals to meet to challenge them to learn to type. Here is why: 1) you can't go back and tell how well a learner did on passed lessons, and 2) the goals are set amazingly low (40 errors allowed! I could pass using my toes). The issue is control; if the student must exhibit something on the order of grades, it can't be done with this system. All other features of a good typing program are present.

4-0 out of 5 stars No evidence of incorrect spelling
Review by "a software user" stated that program contains many misspellings e.g. "confidant" as a suggestion for someone shy. Of course, "confidant" is a perfectly good noun that makes sense in the stated context. Means someone you confide in.

4-0 out of 5 stars Typing Pal Junior
I'm an adult teaching myself to type and this is a terrific program, but I gave it four instead of five stars because some of the words in the dictation sections are mispelled. Doesn't bother me too much, but children shouldn't believe the program when it says "confident" should be spelled "confidant". (In dictation-Suggestions for someone shy - Erik). There are a few other mistakes in spelling but no need to go into them here. Just tell your students it's a typing course, not spelling class!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best typing course for kids I have found
This is clearly the best typing software for kids I have found. I have tried many others, but this one is really fun and colorful. I think it is the only one that is a perfect balance of a good quality software and fun learning. It is very complete, with exercises, practice, dictations, games, etc. It is in use in the school of my daugther since many years and I have finally found this Family version on Amazon.com. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Read this before Buying
If you are a beginner, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. I recommend, TypingMaster.

Using this software, You can only go at a default pace set in the software. You cannot change the lesson time or repeat lesson rate. Forget about practice an extra set of keys.

The one nice thing for advanced users : You can make your own lessons (even a simple *.txt will work). But as a beginner, I don't have the time to do it.

2-0 out of 5 stars XP System users Caution
Each user of this program must have administrator rights on an XP computer for the program to run. I returned the program rather than give my 9 and 11 year olds administrator rights. Otherwise a wonderful program.

4-0 out of 5 stars my review
my personal opinion of this computer package is it is excellent! it teaches childrean and indeed adults to type properly using all ten fingers on the keyboard! it teaches you to type slowly and lets you excell at a pace that suits you you continue to be tested and you improve with the more you use it! it provides many benificial tips and it progresses in accordance with you! many children also find that the games the programme provides are fun! after you are tested and have done a sufficiant amount of work you are rewarded with being allowed to play a game! i highly recomend this package for anyone interested in learning how to type!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this software
If you are a beginning typist (or a proficient hunt and pecker) this software is absolutely terrible. There is no direct access to the lessons and practices so you can only go at a predetermined pace that is somehow built into the software. And if due to some glitch in the software, the program loses the level to which you have achieved, then it starts you all over again at the very beginning and there is nothing you can do about this. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but a memory hog
This typing tool is useful for novice typists who want a quick, but fun way to improvise and increase their technical skills on the computer keyboard. The only problem that this program takes up most of the memory and even if I got the computer which has a whopping heap of unused memory, Mavis Beacons gobbles it eventually as if it is hungry for more. The graphic, when used on the older computer is slow and cumbersome, but if you want to find a better typing software that uses only half of the memory, I'd keep on searching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent program to learn to type with
About three or four years ago, my parents forced me to sit down and work with this program until I could type fast. Thank goodness they did! Now I enjoy computer programming, creative writing, and surfing the Internet at a much faster speed.

I don't have the speed of a professional typist, obviously, but including errors my typing speed is on average over one hundred words per minute. Parents - if you want to help your kids out, get them this or a later version of this program. I'm not in high school yet, but I'm already enjoying the benefits of getting my work done well and efficiently.

5-0 out of 5 stars It reminds me...
about 7 years ago while I was a junior high school student, I learned to type using this software (the earlier version, of course) on my Apple Performa 580.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Except....
This is generally a great program. The Games are fun (especially the road race). What I don't like about it is that in this one exercise where you're supposed to type in time with a metronome, the metronome is completly off beat with the music that plays! it makes it very hard to keep time with the metronome and not the music! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Can't run software on a computer with 1GB memory
I have the same problem on a computer running Windows 2000 with 1GB memory. The software won't start and gives me the error message "Director Player 6.0 - This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run". I know there is more than 3MB of free virtual memory on my computer. I tried different virtual memory setting and found that setting virtual memory to 128MB would cause the software to run. It is obvious that the software has mis-calculated the available virtual memory. It interprets virtual memory > 1GB as less than 3MB virtual memory. I have sent email to the technical support at Encore and are waiting for their reply. I share the previous reader's opinion that setting the virtual memory to a lower setting is not an acceptable solution.

However, after I started the program, I like the interface and graphic. The software is better than "Mind Power Math Middle School" from the Learning Company. I also like that it has a game where you can test your skill.

I will write an update after I receive a reply from Encore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Way around memory problem
Haven't tried this software but had same problem with some other software, the error message: "Director Player 6.0 - This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run". The only fix is to change your virtual memory settings to something below 500mb or to exactly 4000mb. Of course, I chose 4000mb since I have a large hard drive and almost 1 gig of memory on this pc.

So the full fix is:
From the Windows XP desktop, select the Start button, right-click on the My Computer icon, and select Properties from the resulting menu.

Click on the Advanced tab to bring it forward, and then select the Settings button within the Performance section.

In the Performance Options window, click on the Advanced tab to bring it forward, and then select the Change button in the Virtual Memory section.

Click the Custom size button...
Change the Initial size (MB) setting to 4000
Change the Maximum size (MB) setting to 4000

Select SET to accept the change, which will close the Virtual Memory window. Select OK to close the Performance Options window. And select OK to exit the System Properties window.

1-0 out of 5 stars $40 + junk = angry customer
This is a faulty and buggy piece of software. It will not run on my PC (XP Home)without me changing my Virtual Memory from 1000 mb to 200 mb...what an absurdity! The developer offers no solution other than to change my VM everytime I want to use their software.

Well, forget it. They're not the only game in town.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Great!!
I have the Elementary Advantage, and I'm about to go into Middle School Advantage. I find these programs are excellent. I am a homeschooling parent, and the Elementary Advantage suite have done a great job in assisting me with teaching my child. I've learned a lot myself. My son is about to enter middle school grades, and as I explore the the Middle School Advantage suite, I marvel at how well its put together. I have not run into answers that are wrong as was the claim of one reviewer. But, that does not bother me because you will find wrong answers in educational books written by the best educators. I focus on the how well I am taught the subject. If I can catch the wrong answers then I was taught well. I paid only $24.99 for each suite. I also have a Dell Dimension 4600, and the programs run fine. For all those having a problem running the program. You better get a Dell, Dude! For the money, IT'S GREAT!

If this program can confuse X and Y intercepts I can only imagine what else may be wrong with it. I just purchased this for my son today, but will be returning it tomorrow. He has a placement test in 2 weeks and I don't want him to blow it because of this faulty software. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Poor Typing Tutor Program
I was very disappointed with this program. Problems:

1) You have to put in the cdrom each time you run the program.
2) You have to watch the intro credits and exit credits each time you run it - there is no way to bypass them. This adds almost two minutes of useless fluff to every session.
3) The graphics and sound are distracting, and are not helpful in any way. There are 3D graphics showing finger placement that I found confusing. I just couldn't tell which finger was doing what. The program pauses every so often to give fairly useless comments.

After a few lessons I gave up. I've tried other typing tutor programs in the past, and I'll go back to them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Defective Software
Like the other reviewer Mavis Beacon 12 froze at the last beginner lesson. Rather than mess around with this obviously defective product I'm trying another developers'. My computer is an IBM T40 running the latest version of XT Professional.

If you started with mavis 5 and your still buying them through mavis 12, maybe you should just give up on learning to type....

1-0 out of 5 stars Freezes Beginners Out
This program is set to freeze the screen if the new typist is unable to pass the test for intermediate level. This has caused great frustration for our kids. The program needs to be rebooted each time. I only found the solution to this by going to the Broderbund website. Broberbund seems to think rebooting is a simple solution for beginners. I find this program difficult for left handed typist. It gives the intermediate test immediately after the lesson for the ,and. These are two difficult skills for left handers. It also freezes in other places and then does not restart where I left off. This is just a poorly written program.

5-0 out of 5 stars The cover doesn't lie!
I bought this software on 8/16/2002, in effort to boost my typing skills. I type primarily with one hand due to my disability; and I needed to refresh myself on the techniques of one-handed typing (which I learned when I was a junior in high school 5 years ago.) Before purchasing this software, I was at a speed of a mere 12 words a minute, I needed to get back up to at least 30 wpm, which is half the speed I was in high school. Today, 8/20/2002, I am up from 12 wpm to 30-35 wpm! I am confident that within the next few days I will be back to 60 wpm! The promise of "Better typing guaranteed' is no understatement! Buy this software if you need to improve your typing skills! Included on the software is a manual for one-handed typing techniques written by Lilly Waters, so if you are one handed typist in search of good software this is for you! I have tried other programs and nothing compares to this! It is worth the price, hands down! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good value for the money
My daughter enjoyed this program. She learned a lot of different words. The animations are clever and she enjoyed completing the spaceship to get Quixel home.
This is a good program to build a foreign language vocabulary.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware!
I thought this would be good for my students until I tried it out myself. First I tried the Italian. When I discovered that they translated "potato chips" as "microchips", I was surprised. In telling time, they expressed the correct feminine plural but displayed the incorrect masculine singular "il due" for 2:00. Now for the French...I learned that "potato chips" were "eclats" as in "paint chips". Wrong chips both times folks - and good luck in a restaurant! I stopped there. It's a shame they never got a native speaker to check it before releasing this as an educational item. They did get native speakers to read aloud the vocab lists however. That's the one-star part. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Typing Program (kind of)
The program has a number of interesting features, but it won't work with XP users who didn't have administrative access at the time it was first installed, and I've yet to find any updates/fixes on the website.

The other thing I discovered while going through the website is that you can download TypingPal3.0 for about $10 dollars less than Amazon sells it for, and the site also has TypingPal5.0 available for the same price, or $12 dollars as an upgrade from 3.0 (don't ask me what happened to 4.0).

As far as the progam itself, my only recommendation is that experienced typers either don't take the placement test, or if you do, be very conservate in your WPM goals, as trying to type "ffjjjfjjfjfjfjj fj fj ffff j jf j j j jjjj fj j" with very few mistakes while averaging over 50 WPM is surprisingly difficult, and it'll make you go through every letter of the keyboard (usually in pairs), provided you don't choose a custom lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best typing tutor yet
I have had several typing programs and this is the only that kept me interested in learning to type. I have to admit that I was skeptical at first but I was wrong. I got it for 4$ at this sight four days ago and i'm learning much faster then I ever thought I could. This program has lots of features which will help you progress in no time. By the seventh day I should have the whole key board down and will have to work on my speed and accuracy. I'm glad I got this program, without it I think I would have given up on learning to type. I highly recommend this program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome way to improve your chances of getting a job!!
I tried this product free on the website of the company that produces the software. I am searching for a job and increased my chances by learning to type. I loved this product!! Saved ten dollars by getting from the company.

The serial number provided with the software does not work. Do not buy this software.

Update: Contacted the product support via email and they sent me a new Serial Number. Product works now. I am satisfied

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and Original product!
I have used my fair share of typing programs. This one in defnitely 5 star category. It is original, in the sense that there are a lot of tools to analyse your performance and improve your problem areas.

I like it. ... Read more
