5-0 out of 5 stars A real sleeper not to be missed!!
This DVD, purchased on pure whim, proved to be a delightful surprise. It looks to be made by a bunch of college students and combines, animation, skits, etc. If you want serious Spanish study this isn't it. Let me repeat- this is not for serious students of any foreign language!! But it is fast moving, funny, challenging and extremely well done. It pokes fun at all the language conventions while imparting good useful information. Certainly, the info could be presented less embellished (boring) but their crazy presentation approach has allowed me to associate words and phrases much easier. I will never forget how to say "burp" in Spanish or excuse me! My young daughter, who didn't want to study Spanish, is now fully engrossed in this video. An absolutely fantastic intro to Spanish. Well done Cerebellum! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

How can we tell that KidSpeak: 10-in-1 Language Learning is a superb language-learning package for kids? Because it's a bit too hard for Mom and Dad. The cognitive sponge that makes setting the VCR easy for your 7-year-old is the same cognitive sponge that makes foreign languages so easy--and exactly why having your kids use software like this is a terribly good idea, the younger the better.

This multi-CD package offers equally well implemented modules for Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, Hebrew, Chinese, and Portuguese. Whew! We think it's a great idea to offer 10 languages at once, because there's no telling what language your child will decide to take later on--so the more exposure earlier, the better. Plus, this number of languages won't put off kids the way it will adults--instead it will probably inspire your kid's curiosity.

Unlike adults, who freak out when they don't see new words written out, children usually handle linguistic unknowns with an instinctive curiosity. Hinting at the solid pedagogical underpinnings of its design, KidSpeak takes advantage of this instinct at every turn: in the Chinese module, for instance, Chinese characters are used right off the bat--no Romanization here. This is actually exactly what you want--unlike adults, children won't be afraid, and they'll learn the characters faster this way. Each module offers effective alphabet games, number games, animal games, a few songs with animations--all with navigation instinctive to children. None of the modules is a course in conversation--they're much more concerned with recognition of everyday words, which is a good way to introduce your kids to new languages and cultures in a fun, painless way.

Each language has its own animated host and culture-specific stylization, but the games and learning activities in each are similar and well designed. Each CD has both Macintosh and Windows versions on board, and (brilliantly) there is no installation involved--you can run each language module immediately off the CD. Especially cool: the CD includes a resourceful parents' guide and an impressive children's workbook for each language, all in PDF format you can print out at your leisure. 5-0 out of 5 stars Kidspeak 10-in-1 Langauge Learning
I have a great deal of experience with teaching foreign languages to children. By the time my daughter was 18 months old, she spoke and understood 10 foreign languages. I just received 10-in-1, two days ago. This product is outstanding. My five-year-old daughter who has been exposed to these languages before, loves the games, such as dominoes,tic-tac-toe, memory, vocabulary puzzle-building and more. I am thrilled with the product and would recommend it to anyone, child or adult to work on vocabulary, comprehension and pronunciation. It is truly an immersion program, which is best, but it has a help button if you suddenly have trouble understanig something. if you want to encourage foreign languages for you kids, buy this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars My child loves it
I got it for only a couple of languages but my daughter (at 4 & 5 & 6 years old)loves to play with many of them. She will spend aquite a bit of time with it. Hard to tell if she's learning but exposure is good for young ears - and it is not "Mom, I don't want to". Of course I have never tried to put her on a regular schedule with it either.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many languages
This is a 3 CD pack. CD #l contained Spanish, French, and German. The basics of basics. My first problem is my having a Windows 98. These CD's are ment for Macintosh and Windows 95. Although it ran instantly I found it locked up after I would exit a lesson to try another language. Was this because I don't have a Win95? It was none the less annoying having to take out the CD and put it back in so I could pick another language on the CD. Another bad point was that each language has praise and instruction of the activities in the selected language which served no purpose. You had to go to the help button to see what the buttons ment in English. That slowed me down having to switch rather than having an instant translation after the foreign language was spoken. Less bouncing around if that was included. The exiting of your language lesson also was spoken/written in your selected language which was foolish. If you're learning German for instance, and you don't read German, you don't know if you're asked if you want to leave or not, and which is the yes and no. Pick the wrong one and you're still in that language when you wanted out. The Spanish in CD #l was a pain in the behind because it was Castillian Spanish, spoken in Spain and Argentina. Their "c's" are pronounced like "th" which can be very annoying if you're expecting crisp pronunciation like you'd speak in Mexico or other Latin American countries. CD #2 contained Japanese, Chinese(Mandarin),Korean, Indonesian. The Japanese was useless as there weren't that many activities and maneuvering the program was difficult because when you selected something, it didn't work. The Chinese was excellent, although I only understood "hello". Again, the CD locked up so I had to take it out and put it back in to run the Korean. Hated it. Didn't bother with Indonesian. For some reason, in the Asian languages, the tone of voice rarely changes so you don't know if the voice is happy or not. CD #3 contained Italian, Portugese, Hebrew. I enjoyed the Italian much better than the other two languages. The memory names of objects/animals/days/numbers games were fun, though I stayed away from Dominos in the math games. How many Americans have ever played Dominos! There were no directions for it either! The 3 levels of difficulty for vocabulary I was impressed with.I liked the songs too for the animals and alphabet though I could only pick out a word or two.I found I partly wasted my money because I have to ignore the Spanish, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian. I seem more suited to French, German, and Chinese. Maybe it's because I'm an adult and not a child who can learn l0 languages at once like I thought. Beware, you or your child learn no conversation. Had the CD's not locked up and had languages that turned out to be turnoffs, I would've rated this higher. I won't return this because of a few uninteresting languages. I'll have enough on my plate mastering the French, German and especially the hardest one, Chinese.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disguised as just another game for kids of all ages
I got Kidspeak when I was much younger and still have it to this day. It's a step to beginner and very easy to understand. I find myself taking it out and studying for a french exam with it. Kidspeak introduces you to 10 languages and 10 fun characters. It includs popular Spanish to the rare Hebrew. If all your for is to know how to say hello in Italian than Kidspeak is defientely for you. I love the characters that interact with the gamer throughout the learning experience. They pronounce and sound the words and pharses wonderfully. I've gone through every language on these cds and can say proudly that I know how to count to ten in all 10 languages. To get an idea what exactly you will receive in Kidspeak here you go: Languages: Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, Hebrew, Chinese, and Portuguese on 3 cds.
I'm very glad that my mother got me this game for my sister and I. I learn so much just by clicking on a mouse. Parents, please don't deny your kid's the chance to explore so much and learn new things outside their mother tongue. The games are so rich and fun even for me, a college student.
Don't turn down this chance, seriously. I have been in love with languages for as long as I can remeber and Kidspeak brought that out in me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget about boring grammar exercises and learn with fun!
The complete course version 6.0 is just amazing! You'd practice the whole foreign language competence while having fun and forgetting about the spinning hands of your watch. Particularly interesting are the 3-D phonetic animations and the dictation exercises, but there are lots of other enjoyable activities to make you improve your skills indeed. I would recommend this software in particular to those university students who wish to take full marks in their dictation exams and to those who don't realise where they fail to pronounce a foreign word correctly or a sentence with a natural rhythm and a perfect intonation. The software highlights your mistakes and brings you to perfection! You can also choose to have the translations of the written texts in the other five languages available, in this case English, French, German, Italian, and Dutch. Just choose the wished interface language each time you start the program. Last but not least, you'll get the three levels in a single box at a very good price. Don't miss this occasion and enjoy! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

With a wide range of language-learning products now on the market, itmay seem hard to choose between them. Here's one tip: Berlitz Communicate &Connect Spanish is definitely for the serious, adult user. While it does havesome language games and gizmos, this program takes dedication and commitment.

Communicate & Connect Spanish is easy to install. You can practically walk awayfrom your computer while it sets itself up. Four CD-ROMs are included with theprogram, and you will need to keep them handy while you navigate the lessons. The program also installs AT&T Connect and Shockwave along with the languagesoftware.

The strongest features of Communicate & Connect Spanish are the lesson plans, which include a lesson book and syllabus. We highly recommend that you readthrough this material before starting on the program. The included informationwill give you a head start, which is important, as this program is not conduciveto aimless browsing.

Berlitz Communicate & Connect Spanish's weakest point is the microphone andrecording options. Recording your voice is complicated and stilted. It takessome time to learn the rhythm of the program and what you're supposed to record. While it does include a microphone, it doesn't assist the user in setting it up.We had to search through the help section to learn that one must go through asetup process. While this may be apparent to an experienced computer microphoneuser, it's not so basic to a novice. Also, make sure you have a high-qualitysound card for recording your voice, or you will not be pleased with the soundquality.

All in all, Berlitz Communicate & Connect Spanish can be a strong tool inlearning a new language. Just make sure you have the time and inclination todedicate to this program, or you will tire of it quickly. --Kendra Hayden ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars JUST PERFECT!!!
when I bought this software, I knew absolutely nothing about Spanish. And only by my first day of using it I had a very good information about the pronounciation, grammer, spelling and verbs that is enough to make me look forward in a less than a week to search for another products from the same Brand "Berlitz".

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Spanish Learning Software so far!
This software is for serious learners who really wants to converse in Spanish. You can print out all the contents- conversation, vocabulary, grammar, test... It even comes with a real electronic Spanish<-> English 2-way dictionary, which is very convenient (the only software with a dictionary as far as I know). You can use the dictionary with any other Spanish learning materials. The vocabulary section is very handy- a real person pronounces the vocabulary with video. The grammar section is extremely good- regular/irregular verbs for each lesson. Even though the speed of the conversation is kind of too fast, and the recording function not as easy to set up (it does come with a trendy microphone), it is the best Spanish learning software so far. I don't really use the recording function anyway when I practice learning a language- I think it's a distraction to use the microphone. The fast conversation speed can be mended by the vocabulary section- which is short and easy to follow. Again, this software is for dedicated learners. It really worths your money! Personally, I think it's a steal.

I had tried "Learn Spanish Now"-conversation,not enough explanation"; "Instant Immersion Spanish",2 CD version, 1st CD is too easy, 2nd is too hard- no translation; "Let's Talk Spanish" (like Berlitz Spanish, is by Syracuse Language. They don't sell it anymore)-good for vocabulary but no conversation. Most other software, when compared with Berlitz Spanish, is only child's play. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget about this product!
As the other reviewer says, "Fonetiks is a unique publication in more ways than one..." The curious fact is that the exactly same comment can be found at their own website. If you use a search engine and type in keywords like the name of this product, you can get to their website pretty easily, and you will see how the product looks like. When I bought this product, I was dissapointed so much. If there is a no-star option, I would rather choose it because this software does not help anything. As I, myself, am an EFL(English as a foreign language) speaker, I found this product a good-for-nathing. You can only hear few sample sounds from these ten languages listed above and the sound quality is also baaaad! I am a student of linguistics and I was taking a phonetics class. I thought this CD-ROM might be a helpful tool for my studies, but it turned out to be a waste of money. If you are taking a phonetics class for some languages and if you have thought that this might help you, no! Just forget this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fonetiks Pronunciation Guides with Instant Sound
Fonetiks is a unique publication in more ways than one. It's the world's first CD-ROM where you can simply mouse over text to hear it spoken - quite a big step forward in language learning, making an instant connection between the spoken and written word.

But it's also a new way of looking at languages: each language is divided up into six types of sounds: single vowels, diphthongs, triphthongs, voiced versus voiceless sounds, consonants, and stress/intonation. The result is that seemingly 'hard' languages like Mandarin or Japanese suddenly become quite easy to get to grips with.

Another unique thing about Fonetiks is the fact that it presents seven varieties of English: American, British, Australian, etc. - ESL learners won't find this anywhere else, at least not in this breathtakingly convenient mouseover format. The same goes for Parisian versus Canadian French, and German versus Swiss German.

As if this were not enough, there is also a unique "Spoken Grammar" for ESL learners, plus conversation patterns for English, French and German. More than 40 people comprised the "cast" of authentic native speakers that put this production together. This is a unique, major resource for people who love languages. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth any amount of money
this product is garbage, I bought it to learn spanish for a vaction I was taking. I learned nothing from it. It is difficult to use and does not work well on windows computers.

1-0 out of 5 stars I was not happy
I was not happy with this. I got it to try and converse with spanish speaking people. After using this thing for a month I was unable to say much. I went out and even bought the Univeral Translator 2000 that the same company makes. Big mistake for me. all this thing does is translate my money into their pocket, other than that it was not useful at all. It did not work like it is claims to on their box. I could not get this thing to translate 1 simple sentence. I uninstalled it and returned it. After having to fix my copy of Microsoft Word 97 that the language translator messed up on me. It claims to work fine with Word 97, my copy of Word was so messed up I had to uninstall it, and reinstall it twice. I did not find either program helpful to me in learning spainsh, I bought a great dictionary and spanish for idots books and I am learning so much more than with this software. The books are better. Much better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Instant Spanish? Yea Right
Instant Spanish? Yea Right. I have this one and the German program both are total junk, don't waste your money, buy a dictionary or take a college class or something but this is one to not buy. I used it for school and it messed me up, I learned nothing from using it.

1-0 out of 5 stars buy a dictionary! save your money!
this program is garbage, it does not work al all. I also own Language Forces Universal Translator, and that is also garbage that dont work, this company puts out inferior software products. If you buy a good dictionary you would save a lot of money and be better off.

1-0 out of 5 stars Here's what You really get!
Here's what you really get; if you can get through a nightmare install (I had to call tech-support just to get it to install); A low-grade version of IBM's Via Voice technology (probably a freely available version), Microsoft's freely available Agent technology using Robby The Robot to speak to you, and a bunch of worthless Learning Games that don't teach anything but a few basic words you probably already know, and are more anoying than engaging. Voice translation is crap since your using a rudimentary ViaVoice version and the translation is rudimentary and not fully accurate (no conjugated verbs here of course). And if you want to translate web pages forget this software, try a FREE plug-in from Altavista for Internet Explorer called Babel Fish (INSERT THE URL!) instead of wasting money on this junk software. Instant Spanish 2000 is really just a bunch of other companies basic technology patched together to look like an original program. (INSERT SPITEFUL REMARK!) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Challenging for Beginers
I'm a beginer. I was overwhelmed by the vast amount of sentences in Portuguese. It was hard to get in the program. I could not have fun. I was frustrated. But as I progress in grammar and vocabulary using other book, everything began to make sense.
This is a good program because you'll know right pronounciation from every sentenses in this program. The only problem is you can't learn grammer effectively because it provides little information on grammer.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is more oriented to Brazilean Portugeuse
For anyone planning a trip to Brazil, this is a good program to get. However, for anyone interested in learning continental Portugeuse (i.e. European dialect) this module is not as useful. For a non-native speaker, the Brazilean dialect often seems faster and more melodic than the language spoken in Portugal. The continental language is often slower and more pronounced, or annunciated. Overall, the package is good with useful interactive activities. However, the package should be labelled "Brazilean Portuguese".

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for a beginner - save your money.
This tool is useless unless you have a basic understanding for the grammer of portuguese, which I do not. There are no lessons. Like the other review said, there are basically four little stories and you can sit and watch your computer read through them.

I was expecting a more tradtional approach of going through various items and learning how to say simple things. Don't waste your time buying this...

4-0 out of 5 stars You will find yourself exploring this program - indeed!
When I first downloaded this program onto my computer, I felt overwhelmed. The directions were not clear and there were so many areas to explore, I didn't know where to begin. However, as I began to learn how to work the program I found it to be an extremely useful tool to learn Portuguese. Not only can I practice my pronunciation of Portuguese words, but I can also close my eyes and listen to a native speaker to test my listening comprehension. Also, I can play a game to pratice my language skills as well! If you are serious about learning Portuguese I highly recommend you purchase this program. Yes, it's confusing in the beginning. . . however as time passes you will find it one of your most useful means to learn the language. I enjoy using the program and although I've owned it now for 5 months, I still have many areas to explore on the CD. However, keep in mind if you are a serious student of Portuguese this program is not the only tool you will need to learn the language. I recommend buying a great dictionary and grammar book to understand how the language works (this CD has hints about Portuguese grammar, but does not explain it in detail). If you purchase the books and the program, you will learn portuguese without a tutor or teacher! I'm already testing my language skills by reading articles on Portuguese websites. Thanks to this program, other tools, and my weekly (almost daily) study habits I can understand much of what I read!

1-0 out of 5 stars Portuguese Now
Do yourself a favor and save your money. I found this to be the worst learning tool I have ever seen. The CD basically comes with 2 or 3 stories that you can listen to and practice repeating.

The only thing I found useful was going through the correct pronunciation of the alphabet.

All the important items in learning a language are in text only format, so you'd be better off buying a book ... Read more
