4-0 out of 5 stars Good choice... some technical problems
I got Spanish software to improve my Spanish knowledge before taking it next year. I had only had a basic, basic course, and Learn Spanish Your Way is good, but a little hard to use. Not to mention: *trouble getting the mircrophone to work (the microphone really is quite nifty once it does work) *installing it *juggling the 5 cd's I do like how it has a workbook, music CD, and conversation CD in addition to the software. A pretty good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for Intermediate
This program is not for people fresh to Spanish. I have taken a couple years of Spanish in High School, so my verb congication and vocab were already in place. I can use it every day without becoming bored. They have a lot of lessons, so you can stick with it for more than 4-5 months and always be on something new. Some lesson take a while to load and the last section (conversation) is problematic with this software and it won't let you get past certain parts of the convo. If you want to learn spanish using software i recommend getting a couple of titles ( i have this and learn to speak spanish 8.0.) If you are a beginner, start with something more basic, the Triple Play is a good one. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended
I do not recommend Spanish Now. First of all, it's not very good for a beginner because it has no good way to build the vocabulary. Other Spanish programs I have tried showed pictures of items and gave the Spanish name for it to help build one's vocabulary. Anything like that is absent from this program. All it does is give a list of sentences and read them to you and, if you're a beginner, you're expected to learn a lot of new words all at once. You can learn words from it, but it is a very boring and tedious way of doing so. Secondly, the program is just stupid. In one section, it gives a list of phrases that you would need to know if you're planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country. Before each set of phrases, it has whole complicated paragraphs that tell about Spanish customs and they're all in Spanish. If a person can read all these paragraphs about customs then they wouldn't need to be learning how to ask the location of a good restaurant or something simple like that. Third, I found the games that this thing has to be pretty boring. Fourth, the company obviously didn't proofread their product very well because it contains errors in the text. Worst of all, it has translational errors. So no matter what level you're at in learning Spanish, I don't recommend this software. As a matter of fact, if you're a beginner and you want to learn the language, don't buy any language software and expect it to be your sole learning source. I've used several Spanish CD-ROMs and none of them alone will teach you much about Spanish. They're only useful when used in conjuction with books, tapes, or other programs. And if you just want to learn enough Spanish to get by, this one will help you but there are far cheaper ones that will teach you just as much. I would recommend QuickStudy Spanish by The Learning Company.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginers beware
This program is almost like watching spanish television with subtitles. It has the spanish dialog & the english translation to the conversations. This is better though, because you can repeat what you missed, and you can get a word by word translation and prononciation. Sure, the dialoge & translation isn't completely perfect, but I found it to be close. Aside from this, i didn't much care for the rest of the CD (vocabulary exercises, travel tips, conversation practice, etc) . Good if you can already read spanish to some degree. Make sure you read the help section. I don't recemend you start with spanish now though. Instead, take a look at something like Pimsluer's courses.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for most beginners -
I actually have the 7.0 version which I acquired up when 8.0 came out. Can't imagine that the 8.0 version would be any vast improvement unless they've really addressed beginners. Some people, like me, just don't pick up new languages easily and this software was no help. It was not user friendly and definitely was not for beginners. Used it few times and it is now stored with my ever growing pile of relatively useless, overly hyped, software disks. I find it amazing that a field as potentially lucrative as computer guided, at-home, language instruction has so many unfriendly and painful to use products on the market. Good thing I acquired it cheaply, otherwise I would have been much more disappointed. Time to check out another product. Maybe I'll get back to 'Spanish Now' when I learn some Spanish! For now, it's just too tough to use. My computer didn't even like it. As I told my French teachers in high school and my German professors in college: "I don't need immersion, I need guidance and teaching."

1-0 out of 5 stars My experience with Spanish Now!
My experience with this product was not a pleasant one. First, I caught two translational errors and I'm a beginner, so I'm left wondering how many other errors there are that I'm not catching. I e-mailed the company about this and all they did was send me an attachment with just those two errors corrected. They didn't offer me my money back or even offer me so much as an apology. I also had problems with the sound. And I knew it was in the software and not my computer, so I e-mailed the technical department and they didn't even bother to e-mail me back. I e-mailed the company again about the technical department not responding to me and the compnay didn't respond this time either. And it's been about two months since I've e-mailed them. So I would just not recommend this product. Even without the errors, the product still isn't very good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Spanish Now 8.0
I planned to brush up on the Spanish I had not used in 10 years. From the description, this seemed like the proper package. From the time I opened the box I was lost. There are no loading instructions, workbook or guide as to how to use the software. I had to call the manufacturer's 800 number to load it. After that I still had no idea where to start since there were dozens of icons to press. I pressed a few. A video of a conversation appeared. I wasn't sure it it was lesson one or lesson 100. It may be a wonderful program, but I returned it because I had no concept of where to start. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Total trash
This program is total trash, so don't waste your time. Sure, it's got a lot of words and the exercises are cute, but the presentation of the content is completely lacking. No opportinuty is given to study the lesson and then work on exercises. It "throws you right in" just like it says, but the translations are not great and they are using more advanced conjugations of the verbs right out without any explaination. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

While it's true that no better vocabulary-acquisition method exists than tried-and-true flash cards, they need not be of the paper variety. Instant Immersion Spanish is one solution: a set of four CD-ROMs that will take some of the pain out of learning new Spanish words simply by being quite a bit more fun than flash cards. In addition, the package includes the "Who Is Oscar Lake?" CD-ROM, a kind of interactive story game where different people give you clues to a mystery you must solve--all in Spanish. This will be entertaining for anyone who has had about a year of Spanish already, kids and adults alike.

The software package includes two other skill-level-dependent CD-ROMs. For absolute beginners, you'll start with the "Talk Now!" CD-ROM and learn basic words contextually for colors, food, numbers, and basic phrases. You hear the Spanish pronounced while an image of the concept is shown. Most teachers actually prefer this, so that students associate the Spanish sounds and words directly with a concept rather than the English translation. Intermediate students will start with the "Word Talk Spanish" CD-ROM, which has a variety of games to practice vocabulary and a few more dialogues; you can also take dictation exercises or use your computer's microphone to repeat after the audio and compare your pronunciation to the recording. (It's painful, we know, but it helps.) The fourth CD-ROM is "Webster's New World Five Language Talking Dictionary"--a nice perk for pronunciation practice but not a real replacement for your handy Collins Gem.

Caveats: First, the various CD-ROMs are not truly sequential, so do not necessarily expect to graduate from the beginning and intermediate CD-ROMs to the Oscar Lake game. Second, the software is no ersatz for a competent Spanish teacher and loads of homework, so do not expect similar results. The pedagogical approach here does not emphasize student production of Spanish, either in speech or writing, so you will learn more to recognize spoken and written words and phrases than to speak or write them yourself. Overall, however, Instant Immersion Spanish is a strong and, above all, affordable vocabulary-building resource--and it will take the doldrums out of memorizing new words. --Erik Macki ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stunned at its distribution.
I have this software as well as several other language learning titles from the same company. They were everywhere, bookstores, Costco, Amazon, you name it. Somewhere in my mind I associated that great distribution with quality and bought the whole lot together when I found them on sale.

Firstly, the software is poorly written and causes a lot of problems with new computers and newer versions of Windows. The audio and visual programs are strangely poor considering there are so many inexpensive options out there.

The content is also very thin but that fact is well hidden by confusing interfaces. Navigating this software is not easy. Once you do get it down, however, there's no reward - minimal vocabulary, incomprehensible dialogues without adequate translation/explanation, no overview of cultural idioms (which explains why the dictionairy is useless). The problmes go on.

I feel pretty stupid for having purchased it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unbiased opinion - this package is a tease
The software seems ok to give you a bite of spanish but I'm disappointed to say I wanted alot more. I've already mastered the audio cd's in 2.5 weeks and I need more and hoped for alot more. Does anyone recommend something that will teach spanish well on audio for the money ?

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs to update software
You cannot listen to these CD roms with your headset on your PC. Your can listen to this program on your PC speakers. I emailed the company and they could not help me. They told me they always use this program with their PC speakers. You mean within this company no one has ever tried to listen this program with headphones on their PC.
I purchased this set to use at work on my computer.
This program still can be ran on windows 3.11. Windows 3.11 was kicked out the door by windows 95. This company needs to update their software.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Useful
I have an employee who only speaks Spanish and I bought this hoping to pick up enough words to communicate on the most basic level. What sold (suckerd?) me into buying the set was the Webster's Talking Dictionary. My misunderstanding was that I could type in an English word, get the Spanish equivalent and an audio rendition of its correct pronunciation. Not so. All I could get it to do was pronounce the English word, which I wasn't interested in hearing, with a list of letters arranged into Spanish words that I had no idea how to pronounce intelligibly. Of the other three CDs in the set, the Spanish World Talk and the Who Is Oscar Lake CDs could not find my already installed Quick Time and since I didn't want to also install their version, they would not run on my (brand new) computer. The first CD, Talk Now! Spanish, was kinda interesting - it shows pictures of objects and lists phrases that are "spoken" set up in a game format. But there weren't very many of any of them. The program is cheap but I'm still going to try to return it to the store for a refund.

What I'd really like (perhaps for my Palm) is software that I could speak into, have it converted to text, translated to Spanish and then output to audio - both ways. English to Spanish and Spanish to English. Seems fairly servicable communication could take place that way. Such is probably already available somewhere.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was extremely disappointed with this product. The first disc teaches only a few nouns. It contains almost no verbs, adverbs, pronouns, adjectives, etc. The second disc is nothing but dialouge that is all in Spanish with no English translations. The people talk way too fast for a beginner, and there's no way to slow the speed of the dialouge. I complained to the company about this and they basically told me that I was wrong for not liking their product. Also, the five language dictionary isn't very good either. I typed in an English word and it gave about fifty different Spanish words for that one word. So I absolutely do not recommend purchasing this CD-ROM. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A whole new way to learn spanish!
This program takes spanish language learning software to a whole new level. Advanced spanish is an appropriate title for this program since It literally immerses you in the language with an actual spanish soap opera episode. You can practice in a number of ways, as well as take quizzes. Some of the activities include a visually based vocabulary program. In this area of the software the program shows you a still from the movie with an object circled and you name the word in spanish. Others include listening for the missing word in a conversation- harder than it sounds. You can watch the movie with and without spanish subtitles so you can follow along with the script or try to watch it without. Some minor- very minor- technical glitches not really affecting the operation of the program or use of it prevent me from giving this a full 5 stars. But a really great, well rounded buy! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars What a huge disappointment ...
Did the people writing the rave reviews on Middle School Advantage really get the same product we received? The five CD's included in the 2003 edition are just a packaging of software titles produced by independent agents, with little attention given to consistency, quality, branding, graphics, etc. across the 10 subjects.

The math sections -- what we originally bought it for -- are nothing more than text book pages reproduced online. There is nothing engaging, exciting in the material -- nothing to motivate a willing student to learn or discover more. The "interactive" option is laughable -- a voice reads what appears on screen.

Don't waste your time or money on this Middle School series...

4-0 out of 5 stars This has great advatages!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Virtual Teacher of the Year
Middle School Advantage definitely deserves the Virtual Teacher of the Year Award... if there is one. This program actually explains your school subjects better than a real teacher! In the math section, you can read pages that explain the concepts, look at explanitory examples, and take tests. It is extremely easy to learn Spanish, too. The computer even pronounces the words better than your school Spanish teacher. Middle School Advantage tests you in every subject to make sure you fully understand all the concepts. I never really liked to study, but Middle School Advantage makes me eager to learn. Every night I sit at my computer and learn a new concept. This software is easy to use, but not for the Spanish beginner. It is truely just a translation tool and does not even contain all words in the spanish language. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Simulation of a Classroom Setting
The product comes with 7 CDs:

--Language Course Level 1
--Language Course Level 2
--Language Course Level 3
--Language Course Level 4
--Conversation Trainer
--Grammar Trainer
--Audio CD

The first six CDs use the same formula. You start on the main screen with a virtual hostess. She talks to you and responds to your voice commands--all in the foreign language. From the main screen you can go to 5-10 different areas. Each area provides 2 or 3 stories presented with pictures and recorded voices. Following each story are 10 or so exercises.

The exercises consist of word matching, selecting or typing words to fill in blanks, conjugating, pronunciation, etc. Some exercises use the mouse; some require typing, and others are voice controlled. This variety makes the program a lot more interesting than many other Spanish software packages, in which you click-click-click-click... with the mouse the whole time.

You can navigate through practically the entire thing with voice commands, which is a fun way to improve your speaking skills in the language. The virtual hostess also gives the software a certain personal touch, like really being in a classroom. (No other language-learning software has done that for me.)

One Warning

This title may not be the best for beginners. I already had some Spanish knowledge and found the software perfect for me. But newcomers to the language may be a bit overwhelmed by the language difficulty right from the start. If you understand Spanish well enough to follow simple instructions, you shouldn't have a problem.

A Couple Complaints

The story/exercise pattern works great, but it gets old after the 3rd or 4th CD.

The audio CD only has 20 minutes of material, and isn't that helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!
If you want a CD ROM that will really help you learn a foreign language, then buy this.

Okay, it may take a couple of minutes to familiarise yourself with the layout, but this is a virtual language course and not a kids' game.

In short, this is why I loved it:

- excellently structured course
- interesting content (lots of additional cultural information)
- voice recognition (enabled constant practice of my pronunciation)
- error correction (for my weaker grammar spots)
- online help at all times

Enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awful
I'm not normally one to rant, but this software is simply and truly terrible. The discs include one 470 MB executable - I don't know what they were thinking - which takes even my brand new, state of the art Dell forever to load.

The interface is terrible, random, and confusing. There is no help in getting started - no printed manual - and little rhyme or reason to what's going on.

Stay away at all cost! Garbage! ... Read more
