3-0 out of 5 stars Can't run software on a computer with 1GB memory
I have the same problem on a computer running Windows 2000 with 1GB memory. The software won't start and gives me the error message "Director Player 6.0 - This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run". I know there is more than 3MB of free virtual memory on my computer. I tried different virtual memory setting and found that setting virtual memory to 128MB would cause the software to run. It is obvious that the software has mis-calculated the available virtual memory. It interprets virtual memory > 1GB as less than 3MB virtual memory. I have sent email to the technical support at Encore and are waiting for their reply. I share the previous reader's opinion that setting the virtual memory to a lower setting is not an acceptable solution.

However, after I started the program, I like the interface and graphic. The software is better than "Mind Power Math Middle School" from the Learning Company. I also like that it has a game where you can test your skill.

I will write an update after I receive a reply from Encore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Way around memory problem
Haven't tried this software but had same problem with some other software, the error message: "Director Player 6.0 - This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run". The only fix is to change your virtual memory settings to something below 500mb or to exactly 4000mb. Of course, I chose 4000mb since I have a large hard drive and almost 1 gig of memory on this pc.

So the full fix is:
From the Windows XP desktop, select the Start button, right-click on the My Computer icon, and select Properties from the resulting menu.

Click on the Advanced tab to bring it forward, and then select the Settings button within the Performance section.

In the Performance Options window, click on the Advanced tab to bring it forward, and then select the Change button in the Virtual Memory section.

Click the Custom size button...
Change the Initial size (MB) setting to 4000
Change the Maximum size (MB) setting to 4000

Select SET to accept the change, which will close the Virtual Memory window. Select OK to close the Performance Options window. And select OK to exit the System Properties window.

1-0 out of 5 stars $40 + junk = angry customer
This is a faulty and buggy piece of software. It will not run on my PC (XP Home)without me changing my Virtual Memory from 1000 mb to 200 mb...what an absurdity! The developer offers no solution other than to change my VM everytime I want to use their software.

Well, forget it. They're not the only game in town.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Great!!
I have the Elementary Advantage, and I'm about to go into Middle School Advantage. I find these programs are excellent. I am a homeschooling parent, and the Elementary Advantage suite have done a great job in assisting me with teaching my child. I've learned a lot myself. My son is about to enter middle school grades, and as I explore the the Middle School Advantage suite, I marvel at how well its put together. I have not run into answers that are wrong as was the claim of one reviewer. But, that does not bother me because you will find wrong answers in educational books written by the best educators. I focus on the how well I am taught the subject. If I can catch the wrong answers then I was taught well. I paid only $24.99 for each suite. I also have a Dell Dimension 4600, and the programs run fine. For all those having a problem running the program. You better get a Dell, Dude! For the money, IT'S GREAT!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended
If this program can confuse X and Y intercepts I can only imagine what else may be wrong with it. I just purchased this for my son today, but will be returning it tomorrow. He has a placement test in 2 weeks and I don't want him to blow it because of this faulty software. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed!
Maybe it is because this is the base version but I have mixed feelings about this program. I loaded it into my laptop and at first I thought that was neat since I had the sky at my fingertips, it shows the planets, constellations, many stars. Just punch in your location and date and there is the sky duplicated on the laptop. And I like a number of features. Fast forward and turn the sun on and off, sun comes up and goes down. It has lots of information - all neat.

But then when I got out the telescope I went for a couple of books. My general feeling is that yes it is neat but maybe just a toy. So when I got a new computer I did not bother transferring the program. More of a toy, not a great tool and like all toys you lose interest fast. For the serious astronomer or telescope user just use a Miller Planisphere - it is the sky on a 10" circular disc with a sliding cover elliptical hole. You rotate the cover to the date and time and it shows the shy through the open elliptical hole. That gives a similar level of detail. For more information - go to a reference book. Maybe the program has some appeal in teaching where the novelty factor might generate or keep the interest of the students.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm satisfied... totally.
I know that some people seem to have had a bad experience with Space Holdings, but I have ordered both directly from them and also from Amazon before and was satisfied with both previous transactions. I will concur that they seem to have some internal communication issues and that the people you may talk to on the phone don't seem to have a very good handle on things... at least when you consider that they actually work for the company. It kind of feels like you've called someone's house and their 4yo kid picked up the phone. Trying to get Mommy or Daddy on the phone at that point can be tricky.

While I can't speak to the quality of other similar products (Red Shift, TheSky, etc.), I can say that I have been VERY happy with Starry Night. Having been a Starry Night Backyard user since version 3.0, I can say that it was worth my upgrade to 4.0 and then again to 4.5 (Enthusiast). I am now using 4.5.2 on my Apple TiBook running Mac OS X 10.3.2. The product is satisfactory to me in every way, and really lacks nothing that I use for amateur observation of the sky. I thoroughly enjoy it personally.

Additionally, I enjoy it professionally. I teach astronomy at a public high school with over 1400 students. I see about 130 of those students each year enrolled in astronomy. We use Starry Night Backyard (version 4.0.5) running on Mac OS X (10.2.8) as a part of the curriculum that I have developed. I have been totally satisfied with it as an educator.

Obviously I'm runnning all this on a Mac and the same was true with my version 3.0 (though that was on Mac OS 9). It could be that this product does not run as well on a Windows machine, but that can be said of a great many things. If you decide to get it, though, I would recommend is getting it from Amazon or some other source than directly from Space Holdings. Not only do they charge full retail price for the product, but because they're in Canada, the shipping is outrageous.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy from Space Holdings
This product crashed my machine, which is a new Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows XP. There customer service is dismal. After four emails and no response, I returned the product and stopped the payment on my credit card, indicating that it was fraudulently represented as a functional product. They have the worst customer support I've ever experienced. Buy something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible program!
My husband and my two sons have been hunched over the computer for days, leaping up to go outside and look at the sky. Each time they come in, one of them says, "What a cool program!" before going back to the computer. My 12 year old, who is grounded at the moment, hasn't even complained about being limited to "smart games" on the computer because this is one of the programs he's allowed to use. They're all Astronomy enthusiasts anyway - the sort who will set the alarm for 3am to go out and see a comet. I couldn't say if the software would only appeal to that type. But I wish you could see these guys! They're competing with each other to see if they can come up with yet another fact or software functionality that will out-do what the others have found. They're already talking about getting the advanced version of the program - but this one will take them quite a ways, so there isn't any hurry. I just wish I could rate it more than five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best introduction to astronomy
Starry Night makes the sky look so real that its almost like being outside. By far the most realistic astronomy program i have used. All the planets have high resolution images and there are over 100 color images of deepsky objects. If you want more objects you can get their PlusPak #2 which adds 11 000 more images to the sky. You also get a DVD with about 2 hours of movies, an astronomy book! and users guide. Its so much fun to use this software! Now i need a telescope... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Educational fun if there be such a thing
This is a fantastic Myst clone that, on top of everything, is "gladdened" with a load of physical minutiae which, naturally, lends the game its name. Now I find all matter of educational things to be a compelling incentive to wanting to solve the puzzle. This does not move me to finish the game, however. This, perhaps, is the greatest shortcoming for an adventure game. There is no plot as you know it. Yes, you need to achieve a goal and save the world from a global cataclysm. We've saved the world before, and it has been none too grateful getting into some sticky predicament time and time again. But WHO are you saving? Is it the disembodied voice in the introductory video? This is where the plot begins and ends. There are some marginal hints at a story involving a telescope lens thief, but these are clearly there to facilitate the puzzles. Yet, for a game that makes clear its ambition to create a giant puzzle, Physicus superbly succeeds to render the puzzles built on physical laws maximally enjoyable.

The physics information, like in all the games of this series, is presented in a kind of a very pretty virtual textbook which offers extensive interpretation of the physical concepts in optics, mechanics, electricity, fluid dynamics and several others. The textbook, if you choose not to strain your eyes, is read aloud by a throaty Englishman with a little interaction. There are interesting animations and illustrations on most pages; there are even some formulas which you would use in the game. Despite my enthusiasm, reading even one topic in a sitting is tiresome. On the other hand, if you follow the game's suggestions to read the topic in key scenes, you will miss on much of the textbook's info and that is annoying if you do like that sort of thing. In some cases the formulas come short in an attempt to make the game less mathematical. I had to intuit one puzzle because of the lack of one formula variable. Toward the end of the game there is perhaps too much simple-equation math regarding electricity generator transformers that needs to be muddled through to see the closing credits. Despite of how daunting it sounds here, all of this gruntwork was very enjoyable to me.

The graphics are faultless, but nothing inspired after seeing Myst. The music is equally insipid: good for a while, but nothing to write home about. I had to engage in a little bit of pixel-hunting in the beginning of the game. The game was on the short side unless you got stuck on a puzzle. It took me about 10 hours to finish it, and I did get stuck.

Overall, a great educational title; a good puzzle; an average adventure game. "A" for the effort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MyMac.com Product Review
I love looking up at the stars, but trying to find constellations, planets, and other celestial objects has always escaped me. Except for maybe Venus and the big and little dipper, I am mostly useless at finding these objects. And I cannot tell you how many times I have looked at a bright object in the sky and said, "What is that?" So a chance to play with Starry Night Pro, self-proclaimed as "the world's most realistic astronomy software" sounded like a great opportunity.

Starry Night Pro Plus comes packed with a number of different items in the box. First was the Starry Night Pro CD that installs on both Windows and Mac computers. In addition, 2 "PlusPaks" CDs were included. PlusPak 1 adds additional Mars, Moon, and Earth high-resolution planet-surface and horizon images as well as a 16-minute mini-movie. PlusPak 2 adds 11,000 additional galaxy, nebula and star cluster images as well as 10 additional Milky Way images. Also included in the plus box was a DVD called "Atlas of the Sky" which contains more than 2 1/2 hours of original movies showing some amazing images and visualizations of astronomical objects and phenomena. An additional CD was included in box, which is also called "Atlas of the Sky" and is a multimedia CD similar to the DVD that installs as an option into the program. Additionally, 2 books are included. The first, Starry Night Companion is a 240-page guide to better understanding the night sky while using the Starry Night program, but is not a User's manual. Instead, it includes Astronomy Basics, Observational Advice, info on Earth's Celestials Cycles, and info on our solar system and deep space constellations. The other book is the 168-page User's Guide to using the program. I can see before I start that this is not going to be a trivial program to learn. Time to install the software.

Starry Night is big and has high system requirements. You will need OS 10.1 or greater to us this program, and at least 1 GB of free disk space to install. This is not a typo! If you install all the additional packs and CDs, reserve at least 2 GB! The application alone is 557 MB, and if you choose to install the multimedia movies, add an additional 600 MB of space. The PlusPaks will also require about 500 MB of additional disk space each to install as well. Installing was easy, just insert the Starry Night CD and click on the Install icon. The installer does the rest. You will need QuickTime 6.0 or later to run Starry Night, so install that if not already on your computer. After accepting the license and choosing where you want the software to install, sit back and relax for a while, as there are nearly 6000 files to be installed for the main program. This will take some time, about 10 to 15 minutes depending on your computer. If adding the PlusPacks, add another 10 to 15 minutes or longer to install each of those as well (PlusPak #2 installs nearly13,000 files!) After installing the software, you can then install the Starry Night Multimedia content as well. And although these installers ask for an install location, where they actually put the files was a mystery to me until I rebooted and noted that the StarryNight application "container" for the main application was now close to 2 GB in size. Obviously all files are installed inside the main application container, keeping the install very clean actually.

One final note, if installing version 4.5, there is a 4.5.2 update available from the StarryNight website that should be run before using this software.

While memory requirements are not spelled out, and it ran fine on my 1 GB PowerBook with 5 other programs running, but some animation was not so smooth in this mode. So, the more memory the better, and for best results, run it alone with no other apps running.

Also note that while using this on a PowerBook (or laptop) seems the most logical choice for outside star gazing, the power saving modes of the PowerBooks while running on batteries caused sporadic and jumpy animations and updates. To make things smoother while on batteries, go to the System Preferences and open the Energy Saver panel. Under "Settings for:" select "Battery Power" and then under "Processor Performance:" select "Automatic" for some improvement t. For even better performance, select "Highest" under performance but note that this will use your battery charge up considerably faster than normal, resulting in less than half your normal battery time. Do not forget to set this back to "reduced" or "automatic" when done with the program. (I would love to see Apple add a setting in Energy Saver that allows you list programs that run at a specified processor performance while running on batteries automatically.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Software!
You can't go wrong with Starry Night Pro Plus. I've used 7-8 other programs, but I keep coming back. Nothing else matches the features, ease of use and power of this package. Worth many times the asking price for everything you get. You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome tool for astronomers of any level
I was first exposed to Starry Night with a "feebie" version included with my first telescope. Later I upgraded a few times and now regularly use Starry Night Pro Plus. What a fantastic tool! I can plan out my evening of star gazing, including printing out charts! A neat feature is the ability to have the program calculate the actual viewing area of my telescope with any of the eyepieces I regularly use, plus I can print them out in the correct orientation for viewing through the telescope.

On raining or cloudy nights, I can still enjoy the stars with this package. Movie clips, star patterns, DSO, planets, it's all in there with Starry Night. This software is worth every penny, and then some!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I have been an avid stargazer for 30 years and a previous happy owner of an older version of Starry Night software I bought 4 years ago. I recently bought the new 4.5 version of Pro Plus and was astounded that software I already loved so much was brought so far forward. The user interface has been substantially upgraded and I have started to put in my own photos of my favorite viewing spots near the Florida Everglades. While I was admittedly a little challenged by some of the customization instructions, I found the customer support group to be very knowledgable and responsive. Bring it on Starry Night! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
I realy enjoy WeatherBug, because everything is local. I live in Baltimore and my favorite local TV station is ABC2, which has the best weather report in my mind. I saw WeatherBug and ABC2 use the same weather stations and share radar and forecast. I don't know what relationship they have, but they certainly help me to prepare for the day...

1-0 out of 5 stars Major Disappointment
Our new WeatherBug Plus is apparently permanently in ad-supported mode.A local television station is advertised in the upper right-hand corner of the program. A first email to customer support garnered a response complete with a place from which to redownload the program, which did nothing to solve the program, nor did I need this information since I have the program on CD anyway.

One week later I am still waiting to hear a response to my second email; the ad is still there. In sum, it is NOT ad-free insofar as I can tell, and customer support has turned out to be useless.Perhaps all Plus-versions have some advertising despite their claims.Beats me!

So if you don't mind the ads, buy it, but ours is going back to the store.

1-0 out of 5 stars cheap disks, cheap software
1) Broderbund appears to use consistently cheap disks: there appear to be visible defects on the surface. My cd-rom drive (which is finicky) does not like their disks.

2) My eight-year old did not find the game challenging.

3) The software did not interact well with other hardware and software on my system. CleanSweep thinks that the software is installing when trying to play the game; after changing my cd-rom drive, this program no longer starts up on my computer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Game For Math Lovers
Nice game but the bad guy gets away. I would have rated it 5 stars if the avalanche had destroyed the guy in the yeti suit or at least been arrested. This is the only complaint I have, the math is challenging and it is fun to solve the mystery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent help fot math
Is a very good game that help the children to make mental calculations and solve very differente puzzles.

They can practice with decimal numbers, and fractions and they use logical thinking to solve the clues and find the suspects.

I really recommend this software that will work for at least three years. ... Read more

If this program can confuse X and Y intercepts I can only imagine what else may be wrong with it. I just purchased this for my son today, but will be returning it tomorrow. He has a placement test in 2 weeks and I don't want him to blow it because of this faulty software. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid interactive introduction to Anatomy & Physiology...

... but, with a few minor installation problems that brought my review from five stars, down to four.

This four disk set is one of the best interactive programs for introducing anatomy & physiology available on CD. A comprehensive, yet understandable, interactive text is accompanied by color illustrations, 3d physical models and animations, lots of zooming features, videos, games and tests for self-assessment, interactive research tools, and other enhanced features that make learning fun and effective. Key terms are highlighted in red, diagrams are easy to understand and printing is a snap.

This program is appropriate for introductory anatomy and physiology, but its also relatively comprehensive, making it valuable for high school and college students, Medical students, and professionals needing to review the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology.

** One note regarding installation. I installed this program on Windows ME and two of the Windows .dll files (msvcirt.dll, and msvcrt.dll) were overwritten with older data from the software. This caused a conflict with my email program, Eudora. Now, Eudora will not run until I restore the original files from my operating system software. Its an unnecessary pain, but not overly difficult to overscome. When installing, pay close attention to make sure you don't overwrite these files, as the data on the files from the CD is problematic (or have your Windows disk handy to restore the original files, after install is complete), just in case it conflicts with another program you're running. This is something the Company really needs to correct, assuming they haven't already. Aside from this technical issue, all in all, this is a great program, and worth the extra effort.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad disk
I bought this at best buy and it would not run and the error message was in german. I exchanged it and had the same problem a second time. I contacted the manufacturer and got a new first disk. It now seems to be installed correctly but it asks for a password that I do not have. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Sassy and smart, this charming CD-ROM series combines early-childhood education and humorous storytelling with a distinctly European flavor--something along the lines of Doctor Doolittle meets Monty Python meets Beatrix Potter. Our hero, Oscar, is a small, curious British boy who tours the world in a hot-air balloon that enables him to switch among the four seasons with the click of a mouse. His companion, Carmela, is a treasure chest who often goes missing. In this escapade, Oscar crash-lands his balloon on the thatched hut of a timid animal researcher named Balthasar Pumpernickel, who lives on a farm amid fields of talking pigs, cows, sheep, and chickens. Carmela is there, too, stocked with a dozen delightful animal-theme games to play. Children are free to go straight to the games chest or explore the farmyard--and talk to the animals--in depth, across all four seasons of the year.

Along with this CD-ROM's elevated level of illustration, there's a fearlessness about content that is uncommon in America these days. The presence of dung on a farm, for example, is clearly acknowledged in the program with a special matching game (whose icon is a toilet bowl) that requires kids to "click and drag each animal to its droppings." As well, adults aren't the all-knowing educational founts here; Professor Balthasar, afraid of the animals, hides all day in his hut. "Outside lurk a thousand dangers!" he sniffs. Parents and kids alike will appreciate the goofy inanity of a farm-facts guessing game that poses such true-or-false questions as "Cows love to eat frogs," and "Sheep sleep on poles." Most powerful of all, however, are the stirring scenes of the animals: from sunny days in the fields to deliciously snowbound days inside the barn. (Ages 4 to 8) --Jean Lenihan ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A little difficult for our 4 year old
The game has lovely graphics, and creative-educational games. My son enjoys matching the poop with the correct farm animal. However, it is a little difficult for him to understand what the directions are or what he's supposed to be doing in the game. It's a bit "word heavy" for a boy who has an auditory processing disorder, but he does enjoy clicking on the animals to see if they'll poop. In fact, anything to do with poop will entertain him. It's really better geared towards older kids and younger children who can handle higher level learning. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Miss Frizzle gleefully leads a pack of kids to the red-hot edge of anactive volcano, to burn information into their curious brains about magma, a'a,and Krakatoa. Most parents would gladly let this wonderfully wacky lady taketheir kids wading in lava, and we heartily endorse the "learning is good" spiritof Magic School Bus, which is abundantly present in this fine fieldtrip.

However, we feel that the folks who design the Magic School Bus programswould do well to add some new shtick to their repertoire. Structurally, thisprogram is a mirror of other MSB offerings: kids can explore 10 activitiesinside of the school bus, or leave the bus and go volcano-side to learn factoidsfrom the Magic School Bus Kids and play a few more games. Though these programsalways emphasize freeform learning, the folks who design the programs cling tothis now tiresome "in the bus," "out of the bus" formula.

That complaintaside, the activities use real-life volcanoes, 3-D graphics, and multiplephotographic and video images of spewing lava and underwater steam vents.Visually, Magic School Bus Volcano Adventure is fantastic.

Some of theactivities inspire experimentation and learning. A "make your own volcano" labinvites kids to combine three amounts of gas with three thicknesses of magma, then renders the recipe's results: a volcano that either explodes or seepsdepending on the combination of materials used. "Dare to Compare" features fourreal-life volcanoes (Mount St. Helens, Krakatoa, Mauna Loa, and Eldfell) andcompelling graphics and information about what sets these volcanoes apart. Aworld map highlights volcanic activity around the globe. A site called "GreenMachine" allows kids to plant trees and watch them colonize on the stark grayflanks of a volcano. Then they can cause an eruption, wipe out the burgeoninglife, and start all over.

Kids can play volcano games with three levels: in"Operation Rescue," they use spatial skills to guide hot lava down a slope andaway from homes and cars. Speedy mousing and evasive maneuvers come into play in"Rub-a-Dub" as kids maneuver a submarine around steaming vents and lava tubes tocollect volcanic rocks. And a game called "Leaping Lava" could cause survivorsof Mount St. Helens to have flashbacks. Players must guide the Magic School Busacross multiple mudflows by hopping from log to log and avoiding burning lavapatches. During this one, the Magic School Bus theme music plays in a minor key. It's rather creepy.

Volcano Adventure will please most juniorvolcanologists. But if your child can already pronounce "pahoehoe" and knows thedifference between lava and magma, they'll quickly tire of having only theinside of the bus, or the rim of the volcano, to visit. (Ages 6 to 10) --AnneErickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, Volcanoes Rock Here!!
Microsoft keeps putting out educational software that rocks for kids. As a teacher, regular and special education, I welcome every issue Microsoft tackles. For several reasons. I know it's gonna be good. Educational. Compelling. Enjoying....

As a parent of a seven year old, I know what good software can mean to a child. Microsoft knows, too. You will...if you buy this issue.

3-0 out of 5 stars a disappointment, but entertaining
My son is nuts for volcanoes, so this appeared a natural for him. It is somewhat informative and has some great images, but he ran through it in about an hour and shows no interest in going back to it. When you get down to it, most cd-roms are just multiple choice exams but without penalties for guessing wrong. We should not expect much more from them, and at the price that this cost, I could have taken him myself to a movie for a longer entertainment! Nonetheless, this one does introduce kids to the tools of scientists better than other magic school bus cd-roms I have seen, but it doesn't do much to teach anything about the way that scientists think and work.

4-0 out of 5 stars My seven year old son now loves volcanoes
My seven year old son now loves volcanoes after playing with the Magic School Bus Volcano Adventure. He has enjoyed all the games which he has played repeatedly. Some of the games don't seem to be as educational as other Magic School Bus adventures, but overall, my boy loves it. ... Read more
