Launch Speak Hebrew! and immediately find yourself stepping offthe plane in Israel, opening your virtual map to discover the sightsand sounds of Jerusalem. Audio, visual, and phonetic tools make it easyto pick up basic Hebrew conversational skills in no time, while aneasy-to-use interface makes navigating through this program a breeze.

Once we installed Speak Hebrew!, it took about five minutes to get theprogram up and running. Users are given two initial options--travel ormusic. While the music option won't do much for your Hebrew skills (youcan either listen to a recorder or to psalms), it is interesting to seewell-known prayers translated into Hebrew onscreen.

However, the real meat of the program lies in the travel section. Thisis where you can travel to the Western Wall, buy groceries at the localmarket, visit an Israeli family's house, and even fill yourprescription for antibiotics at the local pharmacy. Users choosewhether they wish to "play" as a male or female, as Hebrew makesgrammatical distinctions between the two genders. You can also chooseto either play or observe. If you observe, you are given the aid ofsubtitles, which feature written phonetic and Hebrew translations andEnglish translations. If you play, you will participate in theconversation without subtitles, and focus on listening rather thanreading comprehension. If you wish to repeat a sentence, simply hit theR key in the main menu and you can listen to a dialogue again.

When using the program, it is immediately obvious just howauthentically Hebrew the application actually is. Accents are true tolife, and conversation is easy to follow and free flowing. Oneespecially cool feature was at the Western Wall, where we were able toclick on a brick and read a specific prayer that had been placed on thewall, as is the custom when visiting this site. Small touches likethese make the program seem especially genuine.

Speak Hebrew! is not intended for users who wish to write adissertation in Hebrew or deliver a complicated speech to a fluentaudience. Not for new learners
Probably a good format for people who know some Hebrew, are ready to travel, and want to practice key phrases. It has a map that lets you 'travel' around the city and speak with people. I had hoped to use it to learn Hebrew and so I was disappointed in it. It does not go into great detail so if you really want to study the language then this is not the right CD. I rated it only one star because for the money it didn't have a lot to offer even to the audience it addresses. Language products are of such high quality these days that I thought this just didn't measure up to the standard most consumers would expect. ... Read more

learning to speak a language
When you listen to Vocabulary Builder Papiamentu, you do not hear the rhythm and lilt of the language. Nor do you get any hints about the grammar of the language. All you hear is individual words pronounced, giving you less information than you can get from reading the newspapers and jokes available over the internet. This package is a translation from some other language, giving plurals of words which are the same as the singular forms -- a real waste of disc space. The words presented include hippopotamus (not useful) but not parakeet or kadushi (cactus) or funchi (polenta), all useful words on Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire. Not even the phrase masha danki (thank you) is given. This product is a waste of your time, let alone being a waste of the purchase price. If someone offers a CD of Papiamentu songs and conversations and stories, I'll buy it no matter the price. When I was on Bonaire, I spent a bundle on books and they're worth the high price demanded of a limited press run.
