Amazon.com Product Description

Learn to speak Russian through complete immersion. The Euro Method is an easy and simple way to learn to speak a second language. Based on the same techniques that allow a 4-year-old child to speak a language long before that same child can read or write, the Instant Immersion Russian CDs teach users to speak Russian quickly. The software provides interactive lessons that truly immerse users in the language. The two CD-ROMs enclosed are from EuroTalk, a European publisher of language-learning software. Talk Now! and World Talk will take users from beginning to intermediate levels using fun and easy-to-follow methods.

Talk Now! Russian is designed for beginners who want to start learning a new language as soon as possible. Whether on a business or vacation trip, or even when meeting a foreign visitor, Talk Now! is the CD to use. By hearing and practicing authentic everyday speech, the user's natural ability for language will develop. The EuroTalk CDs are designed to be fun. The program uses quizzes, games, and stories to help reinforce the lessons learned.

The second CD-ROM, World Talk Russian, is the next level up from Talk Now! and goes on to the next stage with new activities, added dictation, and a new recording section. Topics covered include the calendar, building sentences, asking directions, and using numbers. With the recording feature, users can hear and compare their voices with those of a variety of native speakers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For The Beginner
This is a 2 CD set.

The first CD deals with beginning words and phrases, by playing simple games, such as telling time, colors, articles of clothing and asking questions such as where is the bathroom, how much is this and where are my suitcases. It teaches you certain foods like eggs, fruits, fast foods and eating utensils (including chopsticks!).

This first disc is easy going but a great companion to this program is the book "Beginners Russian Script" a Teach Yourself Product sold here at Amazon.com that helps you to define how the letters should sound. The first disc went much easier after I started reading this book.

The second CD jumps right into it with game playing on a higher level. Which if you haven't mastered the simple basics, you'll be lost.

Before I started this program I knew absolutely no Russian words and now I can speak the very basics. It's a great way to start learning Russian.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad for the Price
This is a two cd rom set. The first one gently takes you through some beginning exercises that are fun and teach you some VERY VERY limited vocabulary that might be useful if, say, you're on a guided tour of Russia with some one else to handle the language for you, and you just want to be able to say a couple of very basic things. (Especially number practice is very well done)

So far, so good. But then when you switch to the 2nd CDrom.. all of a sudden EVERYTHING is in Russian including the game instructions, verbal and written cues plus you're required to do some comparatively sophisticated manipulation of language in the games themselves--skills that the first CDrom did nothing to teach! It's sort of like being moved from first week, Level 1 Russian straight to a 2nd year college class. This produces a lot of frustration. To be effective there should be 4 more carefully stepped CDroms inserted between the 2.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price, but that's not saying much...
I bought this thinking hey, it's ten bucks, what have I got to lose? Well, the answer to that question is ten bucks. If you're broke and want to learn Russian, save your money for food and get a library card. Pass on this.

I'd only give it one star, but I'll give it two because it's so cheap and you could learn something from this if you put forth serious effort. But you'd be better off buying the Penguin Russian course instead for almost the same price.

4-0 out of 5 stars useful tool in your language arsenal
First, to address some practical issues from other reviews:

1) I have XP. This CD works on XP.
2) This company does not make a more advanced program in Russian as they do in other languages. As far as I can tell, this 2 CD set is the full extent of their offerings in Russian.

I found this program very useful in learning some important basic vocabulary and getting more comfortable hearing and interacting with spoken Russian. The first CD is set up as a series of lessons and games on 8 different topics -- basic words (hello, goodbye, excuse me, etc.), foods, numbers, time of day, basic phrases, body parts, countries, and objects you might buy shopping like clothes.

In the lesson, a picture is shown, for example a plane. The word for plane is shown in English and in Russian (in cyrillic) and a Russian speaker says the word. There are two speakers on the CD, with noticeably different accents. It is interesting to compare the two accents and sort of triangulate the standard pronunciation. It also helps when you can't understand one of them, listening to the other one usually clarifies. SO, you see the meaning of the word, you see the word in English, you see the word in Russian, and you listen to a native speaker say the word. This is GREAT! I can't tell you how much of this I retained from all this great linguistic input!

So then there is a game to go along with each lesson, which is basically memory. They say a word in Russian and you have to click on the right picture. Simple. There are four different games you can play of varying difficulty levels. And it's really more of a test than a game, but hey when i graduated from college i got an engraved plaque saying i never had to take another test in my life. Didn't you? Anyways... This first CD was really helpful. I really have retained about all of the words on the CD, which is pretty amazing to me. There is also a speech/pronunciation section, but I didn't use it.

The second CD is a little different. It's more of the "immersion" that the title claims. They start spouting sentences full of words you probably don't know, and you're supposed to pick out like which picture they're talking about based on the fact that you heard the word "red" and "shirt" in there somewhere. But it's a little baffling. I'm going to hold off on doing the second CD until I go through some of my other books a bit more. But it's essentially set up the same -- lessons and then "games" to test and reinforce what you learned.

IN SUMMARY, very valuable vocabulary building. The setup of the lessons lends itself to a high level of retention, and the native Russian speakers are great for self-taught book people to hear. There are no grammar lessons, there are no writing exercises, there is no conversation on your part, there is no instruction in cyrillic, the list of vocabulary could have been a bit more extensive, and you don't even necessarily learn how to spell the words you learn. Therefore, it is only ONE weapon among many you should have if you really intend to beat the Russian language into submission. (just kidding) But it is very good at what it undertakes.

And need I repeat that for the price, you can't beat it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter for willing students.
This is a very good program for people who are just starting to learn the Russian language. This program gives students a few basic words and phrases that will help a student get introduced to the language. It is worth the money in my opinion however the program is geared toward a younger age group and does not go very deep into the Russian language. Overall, this program would be a good way to start. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Aday! Bring your banana chips and give this a try!
Malayalam is not a language for which you can have a huge choice of learning tools. If you are a relative "gringo" with little experience in Indian languages, this may be a good program to get you started with the basics of talking.

Lucky for English speakers - Malayalam is influenced the most by English after Sanskrit and Tamil. Unlucky for English speakers - there's a whole pile of linguistically different sounds involved in the other two parts of the language before English is ever even thought about. Get out your marbles and listen up - if you've got an open mind and a little bit of assistance, you might just end up knowing some Malayalam.

The format is wonderful, with sections for basics, food, time, body parts, phrases and more. Each level allows you to go through and hear of all the pertinent vocabulary (this can set to play in a continous loop - a nice way of learning and practicing away from the constraints of the computer). There are games for each section in two different levels of difficulty, and keys that allow you to build memory clues. With each game you accumulate points, and the points are tallied towards a final goal at which you recieve special recognition. You recieve nice encouragement for all correct answers - if you learn anything at all from this, if will definitely be the words for "Yes" and "No"!

The overall theme is suprisingly entertaining, without being condescending or childlike. It's very nicely designed, compared to many other language CD-Roms, and doesn't give you the idea that it's the same general template used for 35 different languages (except in one aspect, see below!) This was definitely designed with adult learners in mind, and for what - $19.99? - it has some really nice multimedia functions that keep you focused, including printable vocab lists.

I originally had a problem loading TalkNow Malayalam to my computer, but the technical assistance people were helpful, via email, and the problem was easily solved. That was great.

I did not give this a five star rating because of the following:

The pronounciations are very fast, and there is no way to slow them down. The given vocabulary and phrases are only written in Malayalam, so unless you know to read the script, you are left alone to dissect the more subtle sounds, to which your ear may not be accustomed. Find a native speaker for guidance.

Also, if you are a native speaker of Malayalam looking for a refresher, or someone wishing to read and write Malayalam, this is probably not a good scheme for you. It's more along the line of "learn some words and phrases before you travel there" knowledge. A good CD-ROM for more Malayalam intensive language study is available at www.vidyarambham.com

And finally, the biggest suprise: Talk Now Malayalam is lead by your virtual guides, an extremely white, northern European couple whose images are always present at the bottom of the screen during the vocabulary recitations. (I imagine they're the standard TalkNow Language folks, but in this case it's very wierd!!) Their lips move to make you believe that these honkeys are speaking perfectly pronounced Malayalam, in voices that would only come out of their slight frames had they been posessed. Perhaps this was a bit of subliminal encouragement for all the WASPs who decided to take a stab at learning Malayalam to impress the cute programmer down the hall. Mind you, this is not a detraction from the lessons at hand, but overall the effect is hillarious. Hopefully it would just add to the fun of learning a new language. "If they could do it... darnit, I can to" :)

While this program will not make you a candidate for retiring to Kottayam and ferrying a houseboat along some Kerala backwaters, you'll at least entertain native speakers, and at best win yourself some allies by any honest efforts made.

Tie on a lungi and give it a whirl. Best of luck! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not for serious study!
I bought this program not expecting much because of the low price and my expectations were correct. This program seems to be designed for a person who wants to learn a few Arabic terms that would be useful a couple weeks before traveling to an Arab country. It is definitely not a serious student of the language especially because it does not even use the Arabic script! It just transliterates Arabic words into Roman script.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the one
Arabic is a pretty tough row to hoe for anyone whose previous languages are romantic. I've tried a couple of these CD-ROMs and this is by far the best. This is the one to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Wait
While I haven't used this course yet I have used the Spanish immersion course offered by Topics Entertainment (Talk Now! etc.) and the course is great. It's a lot of fun to play the games and is very educational at the same time. It's helpful to both beginners and those who already have a working knowledge of the language. While I already have a strong background in Arabic, I am excited to have this CD set to augment my other materials...for review and language maintenance. It's definitely a must have and the price is certainly right. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Now you can learn seven languages (Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese) with the award-winning method used by the U.S. State Department to train diplomats. Proven effective by NASA astronauts, Peace Corps volunteers, and millions of students worldwide, the Rosetta Stone Language Library teaches new languages faster and easier than ever before.

We all learn our childhood language by associating new words and phrases with the world around us. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated systematically, leading to everyday proficiency. It's the natural way to learn.

The Rosetta Stone PowerPac contains 22 lessons with nearly 900 real-life images and phrases spoken by native speakers for each language. The program develops all key language skills--listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing. Systematic structure teaches vocabulary and grammar naturally, without lists and drills. There are previews, exercises, and tests for every lesson, with automated tutorials throughout the program. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great way to try the best language learning software
This is by far the best language learning software out there for the DIY language learner. It uses total immersion without any English (this is a good thing).I own the full length courses for both Russian and German 1 and 2, and while it was no small investment, it was definitely worth it.The Rosetta Stone software is like the Pimsleur tapes in that it's the best of its kind and you get what you pay for.I bought this program to try it and passed it on to a friend when I bought my full courses.

The "powerpac" is a good investment if at least two of the languages out of the seven on the disc are ones you want to learn. If not, you're better off choosing the specific explorer program for your selected language as single language explorer programs are half the price.

Again, this is great software but you won't acheive any level of fluency with the abbreviated programs. But since the larger programs are extremely expensive,it's a good way to see if you like the system before you take the big plunge and spend the bucks on the full courses.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT for serious language learning
Excellent, easy-to-use interface creates a fun environment for an introduction to seven languages. But do not expect to reach any level of fluency because there just isn't enough material for any one language.

I would buy this package simply to see if Rosetta Stone style of learning (use of pictures while hearing the words for the object in the picture) would be appropriate for you.You can't go wrong if your expectations are low.

4-0 out of 5 stars Say 'The boy is under the ball' in seven languages!
An earlier reviewer claimed that Japanese was not included, which is incorrect. There are in fact, three versions of Japanese available. While the Explorer series are essentially hooks to get you to buy into the far pricier full versions of the software, you still got a lot of language for your dollar.Don't expect to learn a whole language on this CD.Don't even expect to have any degree of fluency. However, as an intorduction to a language, PowerPac can't be beat. The interface is intuitive, engaging and frankly, a lot of fun.A variety of activities work your brain in different ways, helping retension. There is also a 'voice analyzer' feature that compares your voice to a native speakers, but it's far too frustrating to use effectively.Other than that blemish, you have a great facile language learning powerhouse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Value - Easy Language Learning
The Rosetta Stone, with Spanish, French, German, English, Dutch, Russian and Chinese basic language instruction, all on one CD, is a lot of learning in one small package.Putting all the languages together inspires a very intuitive interface.Learning, grouped by categories such as food, numbers, actions, etc., is at your own pace. You can practice to your heart's content.Besides a stand alone tool, it's a great supplement for regular language instruction. As you can tell, I find it quite helpful. But make sure you have your own dictionary for reference when using the program.

4-0 out of 5 stars nicely structured, very user friendly
My CD-Rom does include the japanese lessons. I find this product extremely accessible and very nicely structured. The lessons progress in easily understandable segments. For me, it is an ideal way to start learning a newlanguage, as you always have a reference between pictures, the written, andthe spoken words. My only criticism is that I would prefer some grammaticalexplanations, especially for chinese and japanese. ... Read more

This one is really great, illustrates words ,clear pronunciation. Enriches vocabulary. The only draw back is that it does not have phrases. Has also games. I bought the Arabic, Russian, and I am planning to buy the French and Italian. WOW .. Learning languages has never been easier. I got mine from Software outlet for 9.99. Comes only the CD.. why do I need a retail package for?

1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money!
If you're interested in actually LEARNING Farsi (Persian), this software program is NOT the resource to turn to. While Eurotalk deserves five stars for their incredibly user-friendly lesson interface, this program consists of nothing more than quick snippet lines for business travellers who need enough to survive 2-3 days on an overseas trip (i.e. "Where is the hotel?" "Can you direct me to a phone?" etc. etc). The only redeeming feature of this program is that a user can actually hear Farsi being spoken (and thus get an idea as to lingual sounds). See ya...

4-0 out of 5 stars Talk Now! Farsi
The program is great and very helpful. It has a printable dictionary for each section as well as a portion of each section where you use a microphone to speak the words being taught to help you say everything properly! I love the program itself, the only downfall is that you'll really like it and when you want to move to intermediate and advanced you find that the publisher doesn't have Farsi for either of those!! I think it's pretty sad that they start you off and then don't have Farsi in intermediate or advanced but at thelst the beginner's program is great! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a fun way to learn some Dutch
This is a clever use of a computer. The attempt is to put you in a "virtual" Dutch-speaking environment. To fully utilize the product, you'll need a mouse, keyboard, speakers, and microphone. There are about 3,200 images (many duplicates) shown in groups of 4. You select either mode-A, -B, -C, -D, -E. For mode-A, a native speaker says a phrase or sentence in Dutch, which you also see written on the screen, and you move your mouse into the one of the 4 pictures to which you think the statement applies. You click the mouse and get immediate feedback on whether you're right or wrong. For mode-B, you hear the native speaker's statement but get no writing on the screen (practice in aural comprehension). For C, you get the writing but no speaker (practice in reading comprehension). For D (you'll love this), you get the native speaker, and you repeat what he or she says into your microphone, and you get immediate pictorial feedback on the screen as to how closely your pronunciation matches that of the native speaker. For E, you get the native speaker and no writing, and you get to type in Dutch what he or she says using your keyboard, and you get immediate feedback on whether you're correct.

It's clever and a lot of fun if you enjoy studying languages. But ... there's no accompanying book to speak of, just a list of the 3,200 statements without translation provided.

Before buying this product, I had previously spent several months studying Dutch grammar (see my poignant review of "Colloquial Dutch" by Donaldson, a fine book by the way). Hence I already knew the rudiments and had a context in which to place those 3,200 statements and make sense of them. I had the fine Dutch-English dictionary published by Routledge, "201 Dutch Verbs" by Stern, and "Colloquial Dutch" by my computer to refer to. I found this course a painless way to review grammar, supplement my vocabulary, and learn to say some useful things by rote.

Is this Rosetta Stone approach good for a complete beginner with no prior knowledge of Dutch? Would such a user learn the rules of grammar intuitively by discerning patterns in the 3,200 statements? ... Naaah. I'm skeptical. My advice to a complete beginner is to start elsewhere with a good grammar book like "Colloquial Dutch".

I gave the product 4 stars instead of 5 because I have some doubts about accuracy. I found one error that I'm certain of: in one instance an "apostrophe-s" was used to indicate possession. This is good English but bad Dutch. When I called Fairfield to report this error, the employee didn't seem at all interested. He assured me that everything was corrected in the newer version (I bought this product in 2002), but he didn't record or even listen to my error report. Also, I found the word ordering in a sentence suspect in a few instances. Did they just grab 3 native speakers from the street or was there some involvement by a scholar of the Dutch language? I don't know.

There are many more examples of action verbs (running, walking, swimming, etc) than introspective verbs (thinking, remembering, etc) because the former are more easily conveyed in pictures. There are many more examples of third person verb forms than first and second person for the same reason.

One of the three native speakers has a strange pronunciation. She makes third person singular verb forms, which almost alway end in "t", sound like they end in "s". For example, "zingt" sounds like its English translation, "sings". I never heard this before. Is it a regional accent, or has she just been speaking English for too long? It's confusing, especially in mode-D.

This product isn't perfect, but I liked it enough to purchase Rosetta Stone Dutch Level II, which I am also enjoying. ... Read more
