Limited use, but handy
The software itself isn't terrible, given that it feels like it was designed about six years ago. The next time I'm going to Yosemite, I'll be bringing a map printed by this app. The app has a very nice search feature, will import GPS waypoints, build excellent route elevation graphs, and has a system for adding wee icons to your maps.

That said, there are some pretty big problems with using the program for anything other than printing trail maps.

In the license agreement the maps you build, save, and print are referred to as "reproductions":

- Reproductions are only for in-house, in-business, or intra-organization purposes
- National Geographic Holdings is leasing the reproductions to you; you do not own them
- All reproductions must include copyright notices indicating that the maps are owned by NGH
- Distribution of printed reproductions (for in-house use as mentioned above) is ok, but for digital reproductions you must contact NGH and get a supplemental license in writing

So, you can lease and print very nice hiking maps for use within your house, business, or company. Using the maps on web sites (even internal ones) or other digital documents is forbidden without entering license negotiations with NGH.

Highly recommended for the average bacpacker
In my opinion, this software is great, especially for a backpacker who just wants to use a GPS as a "toy". There are 15 major national parks with 4 map views and more than adequate zoom capabilities. In addition, it is possible to create your own routes (by drawing them with your mouse), obtain elevation gains/losses, and automatically create and upload up to 30 waypoints per route to your GPS. There is a search engine to find various points of interest (mines, cemetaries, overlooks, etc) off the beaten path that will give you an exact waypoint to go exploring with a GPS unit. For the average person who likes the seclusion of the backcountry of national parks, who for the most part stays on the trails and assigned backcountry campsites, and who wants to use a GPS, this program is perfect.

Very Overrated!
This product is very overrated. I purchased it hoping to get the quality and detail of other National Geographic products, but this is not even close. The quality and detail in these maps is terrible. I went to the National Park Service website and download .PDF maps that blow these away. These maps from the NPS are also free!

Important Upgrade Available
According to the specifications this product is only available for Windows 95, 98, or NT and supports just a few GPS devices. But it is based on the same program (Topo) used in National Geographic State Series, which is compatible with windows 2000, XP and 60+ GPS receivers. You only need the free Topo upgrade available at Nevertheless, TrailSmart series was created by scanning Trails Illustrated maps, so don't expect the quality of USGS maps found in the State Series. In my opinion trails don't have enough accuracy in this product (I tried Yellowstone).

Excellent Inexpensive Jump into Maps on Computer
Excellent Maps on CD for Zion National Park. Also includes Arches, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Denali, Yosemite, etc. If you have a color printer, with a little effort and computer saavy you can print out trip specific maps real slick. Easy to use.

RV'ing..? Not without Map and go!
A must have the most accurate and has all the AAA points of interest and necessary stops and more AAA approved and recommended safe stops and more. Wont go anywhere without it!

High priced, at 69.99 but you get what you pay for; in this case is true!

AAA Map N' Go vs Street Atlas
Map N' Go and Street Atlas, both by Delorme, serve two different purposes. The user interfaces are similar and many of the functions are the same (fastest/shortest route, driving directions, trip planners, GPS track while driving on a laptop) but the audiences are different. If you want to plan a vacation, use MNG because it has more information on points of interest. It also loads faster (on my laptop). You will not be able to navigate to a particular street address - that's what SA does best - but who cares if you're driving to Orlando and just need to get to a particular hotel? The list of hotels in each is extensive (though not complete). The GPS functions are quite different between the two. SA will upload *named* waypoints to your GPS receiver. MNG will upload *numbered* ones so that you have no clue which one refers to what place. This to me is what clearly differentiates the two for road trips. So, if you want to plan a vacation and perhaps just track yourself on a moving map on your laptop with GPS, MNG is for you. If you instead need to find particular street addresses and like having descriptive waypoints on your GPS receiver as you drive, the SA is what you want.

Do Not Purchase - Major Flaws
I unfortunately purchased the Delorme USA 2004 Handheld Street Atlas. I can't believe Delorme would release such a third rate product.

What is good. The maps are ok, some pretty good POI, but I found them to not be placed correctly on the maps, in some cases up to a mile off.

What is bad. Quite a bit. The maps are slow to load, you can't re-calculate a route if you take a wrong turn (which makes the program pretty much completely worthless), Locations can't be saved on the PDA, so you need to re-type them every time you want to make a route, the app does not take advantage of the Clie long screen. Street level detail is lacking when zoomed in at the lowest level - simple things like street names. When traveling, the cursor that indicates your location is usually off - this once again depends on finding the correct zoom level.

Door to Door directions is a bit misleading if you ask me. Searching is horrendous. It does not allow for saved searches, so once again, you need to type stuff over again and again.

I hope the 30 day guarantee still applies. I wish I read these reviews before I bought this.

A flawed product
I'm returning this product. I couldn't get out the starting gate because of poor documentation. It was very unclear how to transfer maps from a PC to a Palm T3 SD Card. Other reviewers point out that you can't do address lookups on the PDA which limits the usefullness of this package. I was planning to use this software with Delorme's Earthmate GPS receiver. I'm now looking at the TomTom T3 GPS offering instead.

It's so un-user-friendly
This is the second mapping software I bought. The first one is Pharos GPS for pocket pc, it was a waste of money, very hard to use and the map disappears on its own. This one is not much better either. I'm returning it.

Don't let the "Handheld" in the title fool you.
Bought this and was hoping that it would live up to it's name, a Street Atlas to be used on a handheld. Don't believe it. It's just a map viewer.

When I'm out driving and I need to find an address, I need a handheld app that will let me search for it. This won't. That functionality is only on the desktop half of the software, when I'm sitting at home. If I could foresee in advance all the addresses I would need to use when I'm away from home, I could search and save maps and routes in advance. Then sync them with the handheld, and then I could use them. Who uses map software like that?

The worse thing about this lack of functionality is how they hide that from you. It's not clear in the documentation available BEFORE you buy it. Worst of all, it's not really available in the documentation AFTER you buy it. You have to wrestle through a very poorly designed user interface to try to figure out what the software does and doesn't do. Not only is it not functional for me, it took me over an hour of my time and all that money to find that out.

Save your money. If you need a true handheld street atlas, keep looking.

Stick with SA9 or lower
It works like no other program you have ever used. Get ready to re-learn even something as simple as opening and saving a file. The program is slow. The maps lack detail until you are zoomed in nearly all the way. Printing is not as good as SA7. All in all it is a big step backwards.

Good hardware, bad software
This a nice, low cost GPS unit to hook up to your laptop with the distinct advantage of being fully USB powered, but be wary of the confusing interface of the Street Atlas USA 2003 mapping software. I wash rather shocked when I installed it, as it was a throwback to pre windows 98 style buttons. Anyone used to the ease of use of MS streets and trips will be frustrated by this package. However, the software is actually very comprehensive once you figure out how to use it. I think Delorme should focus on real UI enhancements instead of throwing in some very weak voice command tools that will not work for 90% of people in 90% of situations. Sorry, but the substandard interface gets two snaps down.

Great little receiver. Decent software. Great support
The receiver unit is very small and great for travellers who may not always be in their own car. The software is basic, but I probably have too high expectations for map software.

There is no problem using the product with other software as the unit comes with USB to serial drivers that allow you to output only NMEA data. The product still works just fine with the original software after that. I haven't tried the bluetooth power adapter but hope to get one next year if they are cheaper, then I can use it with my PDA.

I think it is quite likely you can use it in Linux, but haven't tried. You'll just need to setup some kind of interface for the USB connectivity.

My unit became defective only a few days after purchase, but Scott at DeLorme support was phenomenal and had a replacement shipped out that day.

Not very good
The GPS works great. The software is difficult to use, voice commands do not always work and if you make a wrong turn it does not recalculate. I would not recommend buying this product. Software has too many bugs.

Excellent, Cheap PC GPS Device (NOT FOR MAC!!!)
A friend had this unit and I've been looking for a GPS device that uses PC mapping. Most use serial port communications, this one is better, being that it is USB and even better Bluetooth!!! I would have to agree with another review that documention is lacking for the unit, and the unit does not work with the Mac (bummer), but so far those are the only drawbacks. It accuratly told me where I was at, how fast I was going and my heading. Really slick! I drive nearly 30,000 miles each year and I am looking forwrd to driving easier with my new GPS!!

This is a must have for @$125!!

the software sucks

I expected more!
I used a former version of this product (Professional and it was amazing!). However, Express is very limited and does not give me any flexibility. Unfortuanately, the Professional version is no longer on the market- they do not compare. I do not recommend.

Not What I Expected
The company I work for has been using an older version of Maplinx in order to dress up reports. I looked into upgrading the product, but the company who makes Maplinx no longer supports it. When I saw that Maplinx Express was a much later version that the Maplinx 1.5 we currently use, I assumed that it would have more features. Actually, the Maplinx Express does not allow us to do hardly any of what Maplinx Professional 1994 allows. The ultimate disapointment is the removal of the thematic shading feature, esential to our reports. 2 Software titles for one price! Awesome!
Cant beat this bundle! Grab it if you find it, ou get so much, for RVing is the Best! Web plug in for updates and customizble maps and more. Found it very useful on our trip to the Grand Canyon. We even located places to stop and rest that could not find in our printed map. Very useful plus you get a Bonus Full version Street Finder. Highly Recommended

Get out the bugspray!
I mistakenly purchased Rand McNally 2000 thinking it was the updated version of the software I have been using for years. I had so many problems in the first 2 days, I called customer service who walked through all my problems and came up with the same bugs on her end - she agreed with the problems, but had no idea how to fix them! One example is the measuring tool between 2 points - it doesn't work on the icon, only around it, which leaves up to a 1.5 mile variance in any given direction! After telling her how frustrated and dissapointed I was with this software, she gave me the address to return the product for full refund (90 day guarantee).

Later, I realized it was Microsofts trip planner 98 and Streets 98 that I had been using. I am ordering the Microsoft 2000 version today (and returning the other product). According to other bad reviews for Rand McNally 2000 and the great reviews for Microsoft, I am not alone! ... Read more

Try Route USA by Route 66 for Mac
Hi everyone,
I have been looking for a travel program for my Mac and came up empty until I took the most obvious route and looked on the apple store webpage. They have a program called Route USA 2004 by Route 66. Looks like its a very good program that will work for most peoples needs. So there ya go, no more worries. Go to www.66.com

Used to be great...
This used to be a good product, but now Delorme is not offering a Mac OS X version. The product doesn't even run in classic mode. I am extremely dissappointed that they are not going to support OS X. I think they are making a HUGE mistake since this is the only map software avaiable for Mac that I could find!

Out of date
This will not work on OS 9.2 or later (OS 10.x), only on OS's before 9.2 where it is very good. According to Delorme it is not & will not be supported after OS 9.1.

Extremely Disappointed
This product does not offer the level of service of its competitors. For example, it does not download current road construction & detour information, nor does it offer *any* information on crucial points of interest such as restaurants, hotels, gas stations, shopping, tourist destinations, etc. Microsoft Streets & Trips, as well as other products available for Windows (*Including* Street Atlas USA for *Windows*) does offer all this & more. Also, to search for an address you must know the zip code of the address in question. (Believe it or not! Curiously this is not the case with the Windows version.) I purchased Street Atlas USA for Mac because I hoped I would be able to run a GPS mapping software package for Mac, rather than run MS Street & Trips via Virtual PC & Windows 98 (which is what I'm doing now). However, this package is so poor that I will not be using it & would return it for refund if I could. If this is the best that is available for Macintosh that doesn't say much for the platform. The Mac may be more user-friendly than Windows, but the Windows mapping software products I have used are a lot more user-friendly & intuitive than Street Atlas USA Mac. If anyone thinks this product is the best there is, I'd recommend looking at the competition. If you're using a Mac your best bet is to use Virtual PC & Windows, & load MS Street & Trips or equivalent. I definitely do not recommend this product under any circumstances!!! I'd give this product 0 stars if possible. DeLorme should be ashamed & Mac users shouldn't put up with products like Street Atlas 6.0 Mac or publishers like DeLorme.

On the road with Street Atlas USA 6.0
I'm on an extended genealogy research trip (1 year +). My portable mounts to a Jotto Desk in my motorhome and guides me down the freeway from location to location, telling me my exact speed (with the DeLorme GPS attached), direction and showing me what road I'm on. A boon to safe travel and to not getting lost.

I plan large segments of the trip on a main map and then use other maps for more local travel. This planning is greatly aided by the Street Atlas USA 6.0 program.

Once I'm in a research area, I park the motorhome and the Jotto Desk and portable computer are easily moved to my small tow vehicle. Street Atlas USA 6.0, at this point, provides VERY accurate route sellection and position information. Invaluable in fact. I've found old cemeteries using this program that the locals didn't even know were there.

The program still has some weaknesses and minor glitches, but its usefulness vastly overrides those concerns... and DeLorme is known for fixing the problems that customers report.

The one really bad thing is that DeLorme does NOT provide all of its products in Mac format. :-( ... Read more

great help for trip planning
Much easier than an atlas for finding unknown places. As a buyer of trucks and logging equipment, we travel to out of the way places and this program is great for giving you milage and approx. drive times before deciding to make the trip or not. Also much in demand by family and friends to help plan trips to new destinations. We particularly like that you can route the trip by fastest and shortest to compare and also that you can route through specified places to help with side trips.

Stinks!
Better than nothing and may be a good product if it was 10 years ago but in this day and age of advanced software it stinks! Detail is sketchy, print outs come out nothing like what you see on the screen. The printed directions are ok but the maps are close to worthless and you would much rather use your hard copy map even if they are a pain to refold! I hope I can find a good map program out there!

What a waste!
I am a co-owner of a service organization.I purchased Street Wizard because it is supposed to link with ACT!, which is the database I use for my customers.As a service organization, it is important to know at a glance where my customers are in relation to one another so that scheduling can be handled in the most efficient manner possible.

1)The instructions supplied do not accurately reflect the steps necessary in installing the software.I am comfortable with software installations, so this didn't bother me too much.

2)The maps are very disappointing.I am familiar with MS Streets & Trips and this doesn't even come close.

3)Technical support was poor at best.After placing two phone calls to the number provided in the instructions, I was told by the receptionist to e-mail tech support, which I did and asked that they phone me.Which they refused to do.They did respond via e-mail with questions the clearly assumed I was an idiot and was not deserving of their time.

4)It turns out that the address information in ACT! must be in very specific fields, which is not spoken of in any materials furnished by the company.I was told I would have to copy the address information from the fields I use now to these specific fields just to run this add-on.

My advice...DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY! ... Read more

no trouble with GPS interface
I have used the various versions of Street Atlas for over 5 years with DeLorme's Earthmate GPS, and more recently with a Garmin III+ unit on two different laptops (both IBM Thinkpads) with no trouble whatsoever- and I'm the kind of guy who usually has trouble with everthing.

The only fault I have with the Street Atlas is that it is sometimes difficult to force it to plot a route using streets it doesn't want to use. Sometimes it will plot a long, convuluted route to avoid a minor road that I know is perfectly OK.

Works great (with a working PC)
Amending an earlier negative review to say this is a great product. All of the problems I experienced were eventually traced to PC driver or HW issues. SA works great - although the graphical 'finding' interface while driving can be cumbersome. I have found several 'errors' in the database regarding locations of Points of interest. Not sure if this is Delorme or a master DB problem but the POI's are not 100%.
Overall very helpful but not perfect

carry compass all the time if you plan to use this
if you try to get driving directions using this software, It will tell you to go northwest and west and southeast rather than make left and right.. very lousy software.. does not tell which exit to take and if you carry compass , then only you can figure out where to turn.. very disappointing.. I am returning this software.. rather use mapquest.com to get sensible directions..

Godsend for road warriors
I travel all over the Northeastern US for my company. I have gone fearlessly into some of the most remote corners imaginable. I dont use online products because they are of no use in the car. I dont use those silly map generators in airports by Hertz or Avis, they dont work. And I dont use paper atlases and maps, because I cant run searches or lookups. But Street Atlas makes my ventures from point A to point B simple exercises. The brief moments I take before a trip laying out a 400 mile drive with 6 waypoints in three states has saved me considerable time, and frustration. IT HAS NEVER FAILED ME. You cannot imagine what a relief it is to see some secondary route show up right when the product said it would, especially when its night and deep in the rural countryside. I have been happy with Street Atlas since my first copy release 5.0. I rated this 4 because on occasion, it gives incorrect exit information. However, send an email to DeLorme and they will revise it in the next release (I have seen this done personally).

A nice product, despite some flaws.
I own a Garmin ETREX GPS and was looking for software that I could use to load waypoints into it to create bicycling routes. The mapping software that Garmin sells can cost 2 to 3 times what Street Atlas charges. Overall, I've been satisfied with the product. Here's the lowdown.

Installation: Went well up until the time that it tried to load "Points of Interest." I only asked it to load them for three states. After loading them for an hour it had only loaded about 10% of them. I had to let it run overnight to complete the install. Word to the wise: only pick the states you need and allow yourself plenty of time for the install.

Use with GPS: I've used this to load waypoints and it has been very accurate (within 20 -30 feet). The software had no problem recognizing my Garmin GPS and loaded the route quickly. I marked major intersections or turns. One thing to point out is that it when the GPS created its route, it does it straight-line, point-to-point between waypoints. This is because Street Atlas only loads the waypoints, not the route in between. If you have a curving road and mark a waypoint at each end, the GPS will create a straight-line route between them. It does not create a "bread crumb" route. Consequently, it is very important that you place a waypoint (called a VIA in Street Atlas) at every major turn or intersection on your route on Street Atlas, before loading to the GPS. This caution only applies to loading from the PC to the GPS., then using the GPS as a stand-alone. It does not apply if you are taking your PC/Laptop with you as you travel.

Ease of Use: There is no manual -- not even a "Getting Started" pamphlet. The interface is not very intuitive, but after you've played with it for a while it becomes easy to use. The online help is OK but could be improved -- I wasted a lot of time trying to find out how to do some simple things.

Accuracy of Maps: I found that some streets were mislabeled. Example: I live on 43rd Place and it was labeled 43rd Street. Not a big deal unless you're not familiar with the area and are trying to find a location on 43rd place - then you'd be out of luck. Some streets that connect to each other (always have) are shown as not connecting. Overall though, the maps are accurate enough for most purposes and seem to be reasonably current.

Generated Routes: I asked it to find a route to a location NW of my house.. It should have told me to take a nice, open highway that went NW and takes me directly there. Instead, it suggested that I go South for about 5 miles, then turn west for several miles, then head north. The road that it suggested has many traffic lights and the posted speed was lower. This occurred even if I selected "fastest" or "preferred" route. It only picked the correct route if I asked for the "shortest" one. The software will probably get you where you need to go, but it may not pick the best way to get there.

Points of Interest: Most of the hotels, restaurants, and similar locations in my area were marked but some were missing and others that had closed years ago were still there. Some of the area codes in my state changed over a year ago but the old area codes were still shown on some of the phone numbers. In general, though, the "points of interest" database seemed to be reasonably accurate.

Sony Skymap 2000
Great product. I mounted the antenna in every place possible in my Tahoe and it worked no matter where it was located. Avoid it
The Delorme GPS receiver works only with Delorme's software. It does not support the NEA standard. And Delorme's software is not very accurate - errors are frequent. Buy a receiver that supports more than one vendor's software so that you're not locked in.

Don't buy it!
I agree with John Bellis. Very strange and unintuitive interface. Maps not at all up to date. Customer support nonexistent (wait up to an hour and then asked if want to spend ... dollars for support). Delorme makes Microsoft seem bland when it comes to sucking more money out of users for upgrades. You might note that they are not continuing this particular software (Road Warrior) I wonder why?! Also, you can use their software with other GPS units but not their unit with other software. The people who are giving favorable reviews must work for Delorme.

Its ok --- But I'm looking for better
I recently bought this software and find that yes it is very hard to use, but I was able to load it and run it with no problems. I also copied the maps to the hard drive, now its a little faster.... When using the voice nav. the voice is too low to really be useful, while driving at highway speeds and listening to the radio or talking to other in car. The maps themselves are old or inaccurate. I was able to work with it and get directions for some locations, I still need a better solution than this. I guess an Alpine Nav system is the only real solution.

Works fine for me, too
I don't have any trouble with the software. I did however copy the data cd to my laptops hard drive using Virtual Drive. The only reason I gave it only 3 stars is that I think the maps do need to be updated.

Worst map software I have encountered.
I agree 100% with first reviewer. I tried this software on two different notebook computers. It was full of bugs. One time it would work on a computer and the next time the data cd would try to install itself and hang up the entire computer. Some locations would show roads and some would not even show interstate-this at the same zoom level. The software also does not use standard GPS language like waypoints. The interface is not user friendy. I am a very experienced computer user, teacher and database designer. I would hate to try this software as a novice. ... Read more

PC not best format for map reading (+XP compatibility tip)
I love big colorful maps. So I thought this is the program for me. But, the program is just OK, I was hoping for better but it is just plain difficult to read huge fold out maps on a PC. However, if you put your resolution up to as high as possible 1280x1024 works pretty well (I'd never use this normally), it improves things noticeably.

I ordered this then saw the comments on XP compatibility. Absolutely no response from the help desk, however: I have XP and it works fine.

You just need to use the XP compatibility option as follows:

1. Right Click on CD-Rom on My computer and hit explore.
2. On the setup icon on the CD right click and hit properties
3. Select Compatibility tab and select Windows 95.
4. Hit Apply and close box
5. Double Click on Set-up Icon and the program will install

The Website actually mentions that this program won't work on XP and offers no guidance. Bit of an embarrassment.

won't install on XP, no support or solution
I got the deluxe version and got stuck for $50, same problem as reviewer above. The thing won't install and there is no support or fix form National Geographic, or Broderbund, who is listed on the box as the distributor. I would have expected better form such a big name company(s)!

Don't buy if you plan on keeping your computer up-to-date
This product won't even install on Windows XP.

It's developers have, perhaps, included some proprietary tweak to prevent unauthorized use of the product.

The technical support areas (several are referred to in the documentation and on the web) make no mention of the problem, let alone it's solution. ... Read more
