2-0 out of 5 stars Glorified picture dictionary
I just receive the product and installed the Spanish language program. Basically you are given a menu of sorts which allows you to select a subject area such as "food", "parts of the body", "common phrases" etc. For each area you can browse pictures dealing with the subject area and hear people pronounce each word as you click on it. You can then take quizzes to test how well you recall the words.

While I don't necessarily believe that you need to be able to do 47 conjugations of every verb, (I can't even tell you what a subjunctive imperfect is in English and I can still speak it!) I had hoped for a little more comprehensive treatment of the language. The products from Transparent software although they don't go about teaching in a structured way either at least have the advantage of giving thousands of examples in the context of sentences and paragraphs for those who can learn inductively. This product will teach a bunch of words (mostly nouns) and a few common phrases but not a lot else.

I expect to make use of this product from time to time as a picture dictionary so it was probably worth the $9 I paid for it, but it would not have been worth much more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, but....
I bought this CD-ROM specifically for the Arabic CD, but thought that learning some German, Korean, Japanese, and Greek would be fun. I already had some exprience with French and Spanish. And had previously bought the Instant Immersion Version of Italian. For the value of all 8 CD-ROMs it is not bad, but not great.

First let me tackle some of the positive aspects of this software. Note I was running this software on Windows XP and encountered no problems running the program. The exercises are easy and basically teach you basic words and phrases you might hear during your travels. So if you run into a person that speaks no English you might be able to remember to ask in Greek, french...what have you "Where is a hotel?" (Now understanding their answer might be a different problem). Each lesson has two tests for you to score points, easy and hard.

Now for the negative, I found that the tests/lessons were elementary...especially for the languages I have had experience with. This is not for people that wish to speak any of the languages in this package. I definitely recommend that you find another program that specifically teaches that one language. Another problem that I had is that when I started the Korean CD-ROM, it showed the Korean alphabet for the words. Yet when I was using the Arabic one, they used the roman alphabet for the arabic words spelled phonicially.

Over all recommendations for this product are: If you want to actually learn a language or have experience with a language, I don't recommend this product. However if your planning a trip to Europe and just want to learn a few words and phrases this product is a fun way of doing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars great help!!!!!!!!!!
I think this software is a help because you can learn more languages. It is important to know other languages in the buisness woeld so you can talk to all clients. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but only if you learn how to watch it...
This is a fun way to practice Italian. You see the story frame by frame and hear the dialogue being read in Italian, then you can click to see a translation of what was said. Also you can choose to hide the words in Italian, to see if you can understand what they are saying without reading the words. It is very challenging though for me as an intermediate student. But it is also very beneficial for intermediate students and above. I definitely would not reccomend it to beginners.

And now for my biggest complaint about this program and the real reason why I felt compelled to review it. The story is based on an Asterix book where a baby shows up at their house, the comic is called Asterix and Son. Now I guess Eurotalk thought it would be fun to let you hear every single sound as it is written in the comic. In other words, if they punch a Roman and the authors wrote POW! in the book, you will hear a sound like someone getting punched. This is no problem for things like fighting and the dog barking, but in probably 75% of the frames, the baby whines. Again this is no problem in a comic book, since reading the word "Wah" doesn't hurt your eyes. But you would think for this program they would just assume that we know what a baby crying sounds like. They couldn't even let us hear it once or twice and then decide ok we get the picture. They let us hear the baby crying every single time. This gets slightly irritating after the first two pages, by the end of the first CD you will be insane and Italian will be the last thing on your mind, and you will probably be deaf too, so what good is it if you can understand Italian anyway?

The baby whines 4-5 times louder than anyone in the comic strip talks, so if you turn it down to a level where the baby's whining only hurts your ears a little bit, you will not be able to hear anything else. BTW it doesn't sound cute or even like a real baby...it sounds like some guy trying to sound like a baby. If you manage to get through the entire story, you will probably enjoy listening to people scratch their fingernails across the board or Celine Dion.

Now how could I give this product four stars despite the incessant whining? Well you have to figure out a trick that I learned. You turn the volume all the way down on your speakers, then let the next strip pop up, and see if the baby is whining in it (you will know because it will have the dialogue bubble). Then wait a few seconds, turn the volume up very gradually and when you think it is the babys turn to talk immediately turn the volume all the way down. Hopefully you will get the hang of it before you throw your computer out the window. By the way, until you have mastered this trick, do not, repeat, do not attempt to use this product without earmuffs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun practice but you can't really learn
I hesitated to buy this series because version 7 had such BAD reviews. They must have improved with version 8. This is great practice. Using the speaker, you get constant feedback at how well you are pronouncing the words. You can see it in various ways - your tone, accent, pitch, etc. But I must mention that this isn't for the absolute beginner. You don't actually learn proper sentence structure, etc. YOu MUST first take a class or learn through the various language tapes. I had taken a semester of Italian in college and prior to that briefly skimmed the Living Language Audio cassettes. The software is simply a tool to PRACTICE what you've learned.

There are a variety of lessons: 1) a video dialogue; 2)Conversation phrases; 3) Fundamental Italian; & 4) Survival Phrases. But they really lack in organization. Don't bother going to their HELP menu. It's generic. It isn't unique to the language you choose. It's the standard throughout the entire series. I know there is a grammer help somewhere. But again, because it isn't at all organized, I can't find it again. Don't bother with the button "Getting Started." IT doesn't lead you to a nice step-by-step guide.

But I still recommend it for those who've at least learned the language elsewhere. I tried the French one- which just proves my point. My knowledge of French is less then what I know of Italian. I was lost, because I really didn't know it. But at least I can HEAR if I can pronounce the words.

1-0 out of 5 stars Words from Italy
Hello,

I have been speaking Italian for several years and I have lived the past two years in Rome and Milano and I RECOMMEND ANYONE WANTING TO LEARN ITALIAN TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROGRAM....

I bought this program in the states to teach my girlfriend....what a waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to re-emphasize what others have said in that this doesnt cover any material that teaches you how to speak italian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was shocked at this program, as it doesnt even introduce (or contain) the conjugations for the verbs essere and avere....as almost every other piece of instructional material on italian covers right in the beginning as its vital for italian.........and it doesnt end there as the help file contains many errors in the verb conjugations....How can this be!!!!!!!!!!!!

The video which for those that have no other way to hear italian might be good....well, NO! First off, the way these people speak is almost funny...as they talk very exaggerated and I dread to think of people trying to copy this accent to speak italian as you would seem like a joke in italy....not to mention that this video is quite old (they dont even pay with euro etc...) and it doesnt cover anything of the material it presents....

I laughed when I saw someone write a review with boun lavoro (Italians dont say this BTW).....and it shows me even more how this product can only teach people improper italian!!!!!!!!

And really I tried to teach my new girlfriend italian from this, and I just couldnt find anyway to begin here for her...even the fundamental parts present very little information....its all just thrown together....

I checked the fundamental section and the seventh word mountain (montagna) is present with a example phrase

le montagne sono coperte di neve
(which is translated properly to)
the mountains are covered with snow...

here already it presents the passive voice of coprire,

The verb "coprire"in this case is passive and female

Io sono coperta
Tu sei coperta
Egli è coperta
Noi siamo coperte
Voi siete coperte
LORO SONO COPERTE

check the software for why the passive voice is here in this manner anywhere in this program and you will be left out to dry, yet they quiz you on this later in the exercises like the crosswords

le montange sono ******** di neve

god this is just terrible to think that peole are memorizing the word coperte (covered) here already in the beginning without the knowledge of how or why it is...and they will never learn from this program either as its not in here!!!!!!!

This software as a way to learn its somewhat criminal to me!!!!!!!!

THIS IS MORE THAN CRAP....I CANT SEE HOW ANYWAY CAN LEARN PROPER ITALIAN WITH THIS.....

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Italian now and later
My 50 year old husband decided he wanted to try and learn to speak some Italian. I bought Italian now for Christmas and he's really enjoying it. However, I was shocked to find my three sons, ages, 11, 10 & 8 also love it. It's turned into a family fun time trying to see who can enunciate the words better on the meter scale.

2-0 out of 5 stars ACK!! Wait that's German!
This computer program looks as though some random guy just through a whole bunch of italian words on the software, got a woman's voice on there, added... fonts/sounds, and through in a box with a cover i am sure cost more than the program! Getting a book would be better, but I have to give some credit for the few vocab. words I have learned, otherwise, this program is put into two words!...

1-0 out of 5 stars still non capisco l'italiano...
....The software itself has not seen much action because everytime I try to use it, I get terribly bored. It is not too encompassing for a beginner. Perhaps with some knowledge of Italian the program would be of more use (?). The phrases that you begin with are not really relevant nor are they interesting and I find that I am still looking for that "right" software that will hold my hand through the basics. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to actually learn the language
The first CD teaches vocabulary. After having fun with this, I popped in the second CD. I found that the second CD is all in Italian and that the vocabulary words I learned from the first CD were not nearly enough for me to understand the full Italian sentences spoken on the second CD. There is nothing here -- on any of the CDs -- to really teach Italian sentences.

It's a struggle to learn anything but vocabulary from this. Caveat emptor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product!
I read the other reviews for this title & couldn't help noticing something. This product is also available in numerous other languages which are also sold on Amazon.com I found it odd how the same exact product (but for another language) could receive 4 &
5 stars - while this one recieved only 1. Strange indeed - so, I had to check it out. The product is excellent, and it does what it says - it get's you "speaking" the language. My daughter actually had one of the CD-ROM's contained in this box set - "Who is Oscar Lake" and I'm not kidding when I tell you it cost $$! Imagine my surprise when I opned up the package and saw this title inside. How anyone could anyone knock a software title that cost them $$ - but has a value of $$$, is beyond me. Combined in this set are over 3,000 words & phrases - if learning these can't get you speaking a new language, I don't know what can. After looking at other programs I strongly believe that for the money - there isn't a better program around.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not pleased
I am not very pleased with this product for a couple reasons. First off this product did not teach me much of the Italian language, which is its whole purpose. Secondly, I felt very lost from one part to another it just seemed very unclear as to what I was always supposed to be doing. My advice is to consider a competitor's product before this one. A good alternative product to look at would be Italian Now by Transparent Language, which is very well done. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

While it's true that no better vocabulary-acquisition method exists than tried and true flash cards, they need not be of the paper variety. Instant Immersion Italian is one solution: a set of four CD-ROMs that will take some of the pain out of learning new Italian words simply by being quite a bit more fun than flash cards. In addition, the package includes the "Voyage in Italy" CD-ROM, a buoyant tourist guide to Italian art and food--all in Italian.

The software package includes two other skill-level-dependent CD-ROMs. For absolute beginners, you'll start with the "Talk Now!" CD-ROM and learn basic words acontextually for colors, food, numbers, and basic phrases. You hear the Italian pronounced while an image of he concept is shown. Most teachers actually prefer this, so that students associate the Italian sounds and words directly with a concept rather than the English translation. Intermediate students will start with the "Word Talk Italian" CD-ROM, which has a variety of games to practice vocabulary and a few more dialogues; you can also take dictation exercises or use your computer's microphone to repeat after the audio and compare your pronunciation to the recording. (It's painful, we know, but it helps.) The fourth CD-ROM is "Webster's New World Five Language Talking Dictionary"--a nice perk for pronunciation practice but not a real replacement for your handy Collins Gem.

Caveats: First, the various CD-ROMs are not truly sequential, so do not necessarily expect to graduate from the beginning and intermediate CD-ROMs to the "Voyage in Italy" narrative. Second, the software is no ersatz for a competent Italian teacher and loads of homework, so do not expect similar results. The pedagogical approach here does not emphasize student production of Italian, either in speech or writing, so you will learn more to recognize spoken and written words and phrases than to speak or write them yourself. Overall, however, Instant Immersion Italian is a strong and, above all, affordable vocabulary-building resource--and it will take the doldrums out of memorizing new words. --Erik Macki ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Give me 0 stars for this one
How horrible!!! All I can do is go to Italy for a week and say words like yellow corn and ask where the bank is "Dove' la banca?" If I was asked a question or wanted to converse about flowers I couldn't because well the disks don't even teach you how to say flower. No sentence building, no basics even to learn when to use il, lo or la. Don't even ask about the other disks because it just gets worse. Only two teach the very simple words and they speak so fast you don't learn correct pronounciation. Save your money and go buy an Italian text book and do the homework. I realy wished I would have researched before buying this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Words cannot describe my digust towards this awful product
It is advertised that the method of learning a language through this program is the way you learned as a child. I don't like I learned English from watching game shows. The first is fine but the second is, uhh, I don't know what to call it. It didn't teach a thing. I had to do some studying on the side to use it. I still didn't learn a thing. The second disk repeats the first disk's information in a more complicated fashion! I recommend purchasing one the old Berlitz books for learning Italian or any other language for that matter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, please don't buy
Ok I'll make it short and clear: DO NOT BUY IT.
It's a waste of time and money.
it doesn't have a continuos course, and they don't teach you usefull sentenses.
I'm still looking for a good software, but this I know, this one sucks very much
Oh and the dictionary is terrible too, 'cause when u wanna know how u pronounce a word in italian, it says that this feature is only available in english. But I already know how to pronounce in english, it's the italian I'm learnin.
And it doesn't even help you build phrases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning Italian
This product is ideal for someone that wants to potentially go to Italy and not cause an internation incident by offending the entire country or, more likely, impress a date at a local restaurant. The interactive format helps you retain a lot of words and phrases in a short period of time. I would recommend it to anyone that thinks Italian is a beautiful language but doesn't have the time to learn it. It can be done!

1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
This is the worst product I have wasted money on yet. Most of the program had errors. You had better know a little about computers WHEN you want to remove it. The format is sub-par. The extra disks are fairly worthless. DO NOT WASTE your money. GO with the Pimsleur or living language courses. This one is not only a joke, but it will put you off from learning Litaliano. I dont write reviews, but this product angered me so much I had too. Too bad there is not a 0 star. ... Read more
