5-0 out of 5 stars Why didI paint all this wargame figures?... XXIth arrived!
Well, my wargame figures have given me a lot of pleasure this past 25 years... now they belong to a nice exposition on my drawing roon...
I never thought PC games will catch me that way... (after all my eldest son is an engineer in computers...)... and we ever argued about the pros and cons of PC games...
    OK I INCONDITIONALLY SURRENDER...
After playing half the tutorials (my smaller son wich is 19 and learning to be a doctor in medicine... quickly outranked me in a few sessions... but you know how it is... they were born to it... I had to adapt to...).
This game is ABSOLUTLY FANTASTIC... and that from one who has had the ACW as one of his favorite periods in HISTORY since I saw "The Horse Soldiers" in my local cinema...
EASY TO LEARN (EVEN FOR US THE FIFTY +-SLOW HANDS- and I do not mean Clapton...), even if on one of my first tries I got lost in the landscape with my exhausted regiment! (how we all laughed at that!)... but been serious... I CAN ONLY RECOMMEND IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Civil War Computer Game Ever

I strongly encourage any strategy gamer or wargamer to pick this game up. I enjoyed Sid Meier's Gettysburg and think Sid is an absolute genius. But I honestly like this game more. (And besides SMG won't run on my XP system) Some reasons:

    1. It is not a clickfest. Unlike SMG and most RTS games, the pace here is closer to reality. It exists in a space between real time and turn based strategy games. You have the time to create a strategy and make plans (rather than just click things madly) but you don't have unlimited time, and you can find yourself surprised and forced to make quick decisions.

    2. Is is immersive. The graphics are better than any real wargame I know--better even than Combat Mission. You really feel like you're there as you see the troops marching into place, see the puffs of smoke as they open fire, and off in the distance--whose troops are those? Reinforcements or a flanking movement. In this game you really feel like YOU ARE THERE.

    3. It is accessible. The tutorial is excellent and gives you all the info you need to play. Best of all, it is in-game, just like SMG, not like the printed tutorials common in computer wargames. Also, the interface is reminiscent of SMG, so your learning curve will not be that steep.

    4. It is historically accurate.

    5. It is scalable. You don't have to play at an insane difficulty level just because the designers want you to. Play at the level that provides the right balance of challenge and accomplishment.

    6. It is fun. Unlike some historical games, it doesn't feel like a history lesson, or like the deck is stacked to force you to just recreate the actions of history. You have choices and it is exciting and challenging.

    7. You won't regret it. I haven't been this fired up about a game since...well I better not say. I play non-wargames and I don't want to hurt my credibility by naming an uncool genre.

Buy this game. I've been gaming since 1970 or so, and this is up at the top of my list of great games

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Civil War Combat Simulator
This is not simply a game. It is a simulator for Civil War Combat (the whole 19th century with mods). I have never seen command and contol issues implemented so well. When you play, you can place yourself anywhere in the chain of command from brigade commander all the way up to army commander. The units in your army not under your command are controled my the computer AI, and each unit commander is has his own personality that affects the way he behaves. These behaviors range from the cautious plodding of McDowell, to the daring boldness of JEB Stuart.

This game is not for those who want to be in complete control of everything that happens. Sometimes things get completely out of control, and that is when the fun really begins. There is nothing like watching, and pulling your hair out, as one of your flanks is getting savaged, and some dolt of a brigade commander will not advance to support you. On the other hand, you will want to cheer when unexpected help arrives, and through brilliant manouvers and troop handling, the enemy is routed.

The graphics, while not exactly Half-Life 2 quality, are quite good. It is really cool to pull back to a wide angle and get a panoramic view of the battlefield. It is then that you understand what Lee felt when he said, "It is good that war is so terrible, else we should grow too fond of it".

All the other details that you would expect from a battle simulator are included, such as unit morale, quality, fitness, weapon types, etc. Terrain and positioning also play a vital role in dertiming the outcome of a battle. Watch your flanks!

3-0 out of 5 stars Can't run software on a computer with 1GB memory
I have the same problem on a computer running Windows 2000 with 1GB memory. The software won't start and gives me the error message "Director Player 6.0 - This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run". I know there is more than 3MB of free virtual memory on my computer. I tried different virtual memory setting and found that setting virtual memory to 128MB would cause the software to run. It is obvious that the software has mis-calculated the available virtual memory. It interprets virtual memory > 1GB as less than 3MB virtual memory. I have sent email to the technical support at Encore and are waiting for their reply. I share the previous reader's opinion that setting the virtual memory to a lower setting is not an acceptable solution.

However, after I started the program, I like the interface and graphic. The software is better than "Mind Power Math Middle School" from the Learning Company. I also like that it has a game where you can test your skill.

I will write an update after I receive a reply from Encore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Way around memory problem
Haven't tried this software but had same problem with some other software, the error message: "Director Player 6.0 - This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run". The only fix is to change your virtual memory settings to something below 500mb or to exactly 4000mb. Of course, I chose 4000mb since I have a large hard drive and almost 1 gig of memory on this pc.

    So the full fix is:
From the Windows XP desktop, select the Start button, right-click on the My Computer icon, and select Properties from the resulting menu.

Click on the Advanced tab to bring it forward, and then select the Settings button within the Performance section.

In the Performance Options window, click on the Advanced tab to bring it forward, and then select the Change button in the Virtual Memory section.

    Click the Custom size button...
Change the Initial size (MB) setting to 4000
Change the Maximum size (MB) setting to 4000

Select SET to accept the change, which will close the Virtual Memory window. Select OK to close the Performance Options window. And select OK to exit the System Properties window.

This is a faulty and buggy piece of software. It will not run on my PC (XP Home)without me changing my Virtual Memory from 1000 mb to 200 mb...what an absurdity! The developer offers no solution other than to change my VM everytime I want to use their software.

Well, forget it. They're not the only game in town.

I have the Elementary Advantage, and I'm about to go into Middle School Advantage. I find these programs are excellent. I am a homeschooling parent, and the Elementary Advantage suite have done a great job in assisting me with teaching my child. I've learned a lot myself. My son is about to enter middle school grades, and as I explore the the Middle School Advantage suite, I marvel at how well its put together. I have not run into answers that are wrong as was the claim of one reviewer. But, that does not bother me because you will find wrong answers in educational books written by the best educators. I focus on the how well I am taught the subject. If I can catch the wrong answers then I was taught well. I paid only $24.99 for each suite. I also have a Dell Dimension 4600, and the programs run fine. For all those having a problem running the program. You better get a Dell, Dude! For the money, IT'S GREAT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical Game
Titanic: Adventure Out of TIme is Really cool game. In the game, some are real characters, but they show it only photos, not showed characters. British, German, Irish, Russian, and American characters have a great accent. The game are historical.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent software
I have Titanic Adventure Out Of Time, and it's so much fun!! It's so realistic too. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it always freezes on me if I go too fast. I have to make my character go around the ship really slowly, and save my game every 3 minutes, which is really annoying. Other than that, it's a fantastic game! =)

4-0 out of 5 stars Very intresting!!!!
I first got this game when the traveling Titanic museum came to Chicago and they were selling it. It's been a while, but it never ceases to amaze and entertain me.
Yeah, it freezes sometimes but if you save it often, you'll be okay.

As a Titanic buff I can tell you that the detail- down to the tiles on the floor and china- are accurate.

The game has many twists and turns and you have many different options, which makes the playing never get old or boring.
The theme music is kinda freaky though- esp. when the Titanic is sinking beneath your feet and you can't jump anywhere, you're running about like a chicken with his head cut off! That is why I always turn the theme music off. The game always makes me rather nervous- the people you meet *cough, Vlad, Zeitel* can be a bit weird and intimadating, esp. when their trying to kill you. The game is almost erie (sp?) It's very fun though and I would reccomend it to anyone with a slight intrest in Titanic or history.
I promise you- by the time you are done playing this game for the first time, you will have a much better understanding and a different kind of sympathy for the people there on that fateful night.
Also, to get in the "Titanic" mood, rent the two Titanic movies!!! Very fun!

The best advice I could give you is to save before any kind of meeting with Vlad and/or Zeitel. PLEASE, JUST DO IT!!! Believe me. I learned the hard way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Go back to 1912 and find out what it was like on the Titanic
I would like for readers to know that this is an review for Titanic: Adventure Out of Time. This means that I am not rating/reviewing any other item that may be included in this product. Thanks

Cyberflix has outdone themselves. Titanic is a masterpiece. I am a Titanic buff and eveny I found it to be a marvel. Titanic has rerisen. The wonderful graphics almost deserve to be on Playstation2. The charcters I found to be really realistic. Like in other adventure games like Oregon Trail 2 they just move their mouthes. But every thing else is still. In Titanic, everything moves. When they move their hand the clothing has ripples and their skin moves just like a human. You also get to say what you want not just what the computer player has to say. BUY THIS! The only error I had was it froze and I couldn't find a patch for it that worked. That is the only reason for it to have 4 stars.

Rating Titanic: Adventure Out of Time

    Graphics 10/10
    Realistic Enviorment* 10/10
    Realistic Characters 10/10
    Easy Controls 10/10
    Suspense & Other Action 10/10
    Errors & Other Problems~ 4/10

*REALISTIC ENVIORMENT IS HOW REALISTIC THE ENVIORMENT AROUND YOU IS. EXAMPLE: The door frames or details on the lifts etc.

~ERRORS & OTHER PROBLEMS ARE BASED ON HOW MANY ERRORS I OCCURRED. EXAMPLE: Freezing during gameplay. This is a great annoyence when playing an adventure game. This counts as a lot of points!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Titanic: Adventure
This has to be, without a doubt, the best computer game I have ever played- better, even, than the "Sims". Although I have only played "Titanic, Adventure Out of Time", and not the extra CD-Rom, I must saw that "Adventure" is unabatedly amazing. You are Frank Carlson, a British secret service agent (cough::Bond::cough) who has been dismissed after a failure on the "titanic mission" in the midst of WWII. However, a German bomb blows you back into the Titanic, where you get one more chance to complete your mission, and stop WWI, WWII, and the Russian Revolution. The graphics of the Titanic were detailed and excellent, while the characters were so realistic in movement and speech that one could not believe that they were AI (I nearly cried at a favorite character's death). The best part about this game, though, is the way that history and seemingly small actions can save the world from war. The way that WWII is stopped is particularly funny. While this game is hard and requires many "getting objects quickly" scenarios, every object, if lost, has a backup way. I know at least one way to win in which you participate in the optional Georgia-poison subplot, but there must be many more. Good luck aboard the Titanic!

PS: You may find yourself playing this game over and over, just to find different ways to win. This is completely normal ... Read more

I have reviewed it if you want extra information. The PC system requirements are about the same. ... Read more
