Amazon.com Review

With the modern PC having a variety of possibilities of which traditional language-learning methods could only dream--voice recognition, video dialogues, and so on--the past few years have seen an extraordinary boom in language-learning software packages. However, as picking through this surfeit can be tricky, it is important to find a reliable brand, and the Learn Now! series is definitely among the best software packages.

The program comes equipped with 2 CDs, one of which has various key sections--useful "survival phrases", fun activities, conversations, and practicing speech against the voice of a native speaker--while the other has a thorough grammar tutorial. This combination is certainly a valuable one for people who are serious about learning a language, and the product is clear and easy to use: in role-plays, phrases are highlighted in a box and their English translations placed underneath, while the voice recognition software allows you to measure your own voice against that of a native speaker, and the games hone the things that have been learnt. Sections are tailored to various activities, such as getting around, going out, and business situations, while at any point you can call up a grammar tutorial which explains a particular point on which you are unsure.

In addition to these sections, the part on survival phrases will be of much use to those who have already reached a basic level. There are several practice dialogues based around commonplace situations--in the hotel, the bar, the airport, etc. Although some of the advice borders on the infantile ("When you decide to travel outside the USA, you will probably need a passport"), much of it is useful, and rounds out what is a well composed package for someone starting out on the road to using the language overseas. --Toby Green, Amazon.co.uk ... 1-0 out of 5 stars JUNK JUNK JUNK - DO NOT LOOK AT THE FAKE RATINGS
This software is so lame that the company has to make "fake reviews" to sell the product. If you don't believe me, check out the multiple 5 star ratings on the same day sometime in July 2003. I strongly doubt that ANY person would find this software worthwhile. I've tried out all the language programs, and by far, this is the worst of them all (although The Rosetta Stone comes in pretty close with its rediculous price for worthless junk).

Currently, I can speak/read English, German, French, Spanish. And I can read Latin. And I am proficient in many other languages. I bought this software to supplement my Japanese, but like most other softwares... it is simply bad.

If you truly want to learn a new language, there are countless websites now which teaches you everything from ground-up. Well, you'll have to spend a lot of time to do your searching, but it's so much more worthwhile. And of course, in order to speak proficiently you should always apply that new knowledge with other people who can speak whatever language that you are learning. That's how I learned most of my romantic languages...

anyhow, i just thought I had to share this with you, since the reviews for this program on this site are so misleading...

4-0 out of 5 stars not for everyone but i thought it was great
I have used several LanguageNow courses and I like them. However, reviews for these courses seem to be all over the place, so I thought it might be helpful to describe what they are and what they aren't.

The CD always has at least four parts. 1)The first section teaches common words in sample sentences and dialogues. 2)The second section teaches survival phrases. 3) Other sections are monologues on travel and culture, or are stories full of dialogues. These sections are more difficult than the first two.

Everything you hear is written on the screen. You can stop and start anyplace and at any time. You can listen to one sentence a hundred times if you want. You can listen to a slowed down version. You can click on a word at any time for a translation into English. When ready, you can go to the games section and practice what you have learned. I really like the games section, as it really reinforces what I am learning without wearing me out.

Beware! The courses don't teach grammar, but they still work well if you buy a simple grammar reference. The courses do teach vocabulary, and how to speak and listen. I know several languages and find that I learn more quickly if I focus on communication and just check on a grammar point now and then. This company also has "add-on-titles" which are good if you want to become near fluent even without much real life practice. If you are a complete beginner, you might find these courses frustrating. If you have some background or know a related language, these courses really work well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad language software
This cdrom was the worst investment i have ever made. it was not organized for a beginner. there were no chapters, or any way to find out where to start. it made you repeat a bunch of phrases and sentences, so you had no idea what you were saying, unless you chose to see the translation, but it did not teach you the basics. it is rubbish!!!!!! do not buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for German Language Learning
I am very surprised at how good German Now really is. This software makes very good use of what a computer has to offer and has a great method by which to learn the German language. I really liked the review games, conversation practices and the voice recognition features. I think that it is incredible that this software will let you hear every word in German and you can even slow it down to help you with your pronunciation. Overall this program is put together well, does what it is meant to do and is just plain good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Learning German
This product is good for learning and practicing the German Language. As an American businessman working for Volkswagen/BMW, a German car company, learning German seemed like a good idea since I took frequent business trips to Germany. I started with a class but soon started looking for alternatives. I picked up German Now and found that using it helped a lot. It focused on the language skills of listening, speaking, reading&writing, and vocabulary & grammar. The programs ability to say many of the words through audio allows you to recognize and pronounce words better. The Plug-n-Play game, along with others, helps to teach you to read and spell German. I highly recomend this product if you want to learn a new language or use it to help you in a language class. It has numerous games, activities and videos. The content is just endless and it works. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I thought this product was very helpful in teaching my whole family some basic german before our vacation to Switzerland. The graphics were fun and the video simulations were a great way to practice what we were learning. It really focuses on the practical application of the language, giving simulations for cabs, restaurants, shopping, etc. My kids loved hearing themselves on the playback and it even encouraged my teen daughter to take a foreign language class is school. I recommend this product highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners!!!
I bought this before my husband and I moved to Germany. I loved that I could practice my pronunciation and playback what I said. The simulations were great and helped me to practice my language skills in a conversational setting. When we arrived in Germany, I was amazed at how quickly I became conversant because I had already gotten a firm grasp of the basics of conversational german through this software. I also used it after we were already there, to brush up on vocabulary. I highly recommend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!
I used this software to learn the basics of German before my husband and I moved to Switzerland. It was easy to use and the real life simulations gave me practical experience listening to and responding to native speakers. I loved the fact that I could test my pronunciation. When I arrived in Switzerland, many people told me that my pronunciation was very good and since I had the basics of vocabulary, sentence structure and pronunciation down, I quickly became conversant! I HIGHLY recommend this product!

1-0 out of 5 stars extremely poor - a complete waste of money
If one knows absolutely no german, this product will not provide any structured methodical way to learn some, so it is useless to an absolute beginner. If one does know even a small amount of german, then one will already know more than the few phrases and the few very basic words which this package contains. The mulimedia section is a farcical - 10 songs and some pathetic games. The fact that the box stated that it is a 3 CD set led me to think that it would contain lots of multimedia - in actual fact the same video and audio is replicated on each of the disks. Very disappointing. ... Read more

This program made my windows 98 crash it is not compatable with Windows as it says it does, and if you do ge this thing to work it teaches you nothing. Better off looking at the book sections, and buy a good learn How to speak German book

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth anything
I own this product, I bought it to learn German for a vaction I was going to take. I learned nothing from this software. Dont waste your money. Buy a book, like the idots guide to German, that is much better than this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun software but not for the beginner
My local public library has this software. It is a 3 CD set. The first CD consists of four "lessons" and I was able to finish one and start the second inside an evening. The speech recognition aspect can be quirky but it is extremely FUN! The goal is to make your pronunciation mimic the sample. Even my kids enjoyed repeating a short German phrase into the microphone. I think this software would be a difficult initiation into the language for an absolute beginner. But if you already have some grasp of the language the interactivity is a great enhancement to learning. Using this software is fun! You must have a microphone plugged into your sound card, but if you don't have one yet, they are relatively cheap (under $10). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget about boring grammar exercises and learn with fun!
The complete course version 6.0 is just amazing! You'd practice the whole foreign language competence while having fun and forgetting about the spinning hands of your watch. Particularly interesting are the 3-D phonetic animations and the dictation exercises, but there are lots of other enjoyable activities to make you improve your skills indeed. I would recommend this software in particular to those university students who wish to take full marks in their dictation exams and to those who don't realise where they fail to pronounce a foreign word correctly or a sentence with a natural rhythm and a perfect intonation. The software highlights your mistakes and brings you to perfection! You can also choose to have the translations of the written texts in the other five languages available, in this case French, English, Italian, Dutch and Spanish. Just choose the wished interface language each time you start the program. Last but not least, you'll get the three levels in a single box at a very good price. Amazon.com Product Description

Now you can learn a new language with the award-winning method used by the U.S. State Department to train diplomats. Proven effective by NASA astronauts, Peace Corps volunteers, and millions of students worldwide, the Rosetta Stone Language Library teaches new languages faster and easier than ever before.

We all learn our childhood language by associating new words and phrases with the world around us. The Rosetta Stone method replicates this process by presenting vivid, real-life images to convey the meaning of each new phrase. Instead of translating, memorizing, and studying rules of grammar, you actually learn to think in the new language. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated systematically, leading to everyday proficiency. It's the natural way to learn.

The Rosetta Stone Explorer contains 22 lessons for beginning learners with nearly 900 real-life images and phrases spoken by native speakers. It develops all key language skills--listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing--while its systematic structure teaches vocabulary and grammar naturally, without lists and drills. Includes previews, exercises, and tests for every lesson, with automated tutorials throughout the program. (Ages 6 and older) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great way to try the best language learning software
This is by far the best language learning software out there for the DIY language learner. It uses total immersion without any English (this is a good thing). I own the full length courses for both Russian and German 1 and 2, and while it was no small investment, it was definitely worth it. The Rosetta Stone software is like the Pimsleur tapes in that it's the best of its kind and you get what you pay for. I bought this program to try it and passed it on to a friend when I bought my full courses.

Again, this is great software but you won't acheive any level of fluency with the abbreviated programs. But since the larger programs are extremely expensive, it's a good way to see if you like the system before you take the big plunge and spend the bucks on the full courses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Program, Best of German Language Products I've Tried
I've purchased many German language products (several types of software). This was the first software that made "sense" to me and actually seemed to be effective. The product seems very professional in it's design. Actually, after purchasing this through Amazon, I decided to spend quite a bit more and purchase the German I and II series. I recommend buying this software to see if it is effective for you. If so, purchase the Rosetta Stone Series I (or I and II). You'll be able to see if this software works for you before you spend quite a bit more to get the full blown training package (which you can also purchase through Amazon). I agree with other users who say that the software can be improved. For example, I do agree that the definite articles should be with every word on the screen you're viewing. However, I must say that this is still the best software I've come across so far. I think it is an excellent starter course for anyone wanting to learn German. Definitely keep a dictionary close by (German/English). The program throws you right into the language without English speakers giving assitance. This is effective, but can be challenging if you trying to learn a new word. Actually looking up words in a dictionary helps re-inforce what your viewing and learning. Great program, worth the inexpensive price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product.
I'm German and we bought this product for my fiancee who doesn't know any German. It starts with really simple things and uses repetition to get the point across, and then adds on slowly. Pictures help you with visualizing and remembering words better. We have tried other CD-roms that were very difficult, but this one is great and fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I really enjoyed it. It starts with the most basic, with different situations and gets more complex as you learn! I have done other programs like this, but they put me to sleep. I can't wait to turn the computer on to see the German Explorer! The reason I only gave it four stars was because they didn't put in the english tranlation, just the german. If they had put down the german and the english together, it would be perfect!

4-0 out of 5 stars Rosetta Stone German Explorer ist ja wunderbar!
I have my own language school, and hold a Master's degree, along with PA Teaching certification, in German. The ages of my students fall between 4 and 60. Although the program is definitely not appropriate for those under Kindergarten (a German word!)age, I heartily endorse it for students of all other ages. I love how students can practice all language skills: reading, writing, listening/comprehension, and speaking. The speaking/writing section features a scale which monitors pronunciation of words or phrases which are said by a native speaker. I think this is ingenious because it allows students to develop the correct accent. So many programs and word books tend not to stress this vital skill. What's the use of the phrases or words if students cannot hear them first pronounced correctly, and, then, have the chance to pronounce the words or phrases on their own? The native speakers pronounce everything very clearly (sehr deutlich!). One criticism: I would like to see some grammar explanations as part of this program. Even beginners, especially adult beginners, need to know the how's and why's of grammar so that they may learn to create their own sentences and to manipulate the language themselves. Otherwise, two very big thumbs up! Ein tolles Programm für alle! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget about this product!
As the other reviewer says, "Fonetiks is a unique publication in more ways than one..." The curious fact is that the exactly same comment can be found at their own website. If you use a search engine and type in keywords like the name of this product, you can get to their website pretty easily, and you will see how the product looks like. When I bought this product, I was dissapointed so much. If there is a no-star option, I would rather choose it because this software does not help anything. As I, myself, am an EFL(English as a foreign language) speaker, I found this product a good-for-nathing. You can only hear few sample sounds from these ten languages listed above and the sound quality is also baaaad! I am a student of linguistics and I was taking a phonetics class. I thought this CD-ROM might be a helpful tool for my studies, but it turned out to be a waste of money. If you are taking a phonetics class for some languages and if you have thought that this might help you, no! Just forget this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fonetiks Pronunciation Guides with Instant Sound
Fonetiks is a unique publication in more ways than one. It's the world's first CD-ROM where you can simply mouse over text to hear it spoken - quite a big step forward in language learning, making an instant connection between the spoken and written word.

But it's also a new way of looking at languages: each language is divided up into six types of sounds: single vowels, diphthongs, triphthongs, voiced versus voiceless sounds, consonants, and stress/intonation. The result is that seemingly 'hard' languages like Mandarin or Japanese suddenly become quite easy to get to grips with.

Another unique thing about Fonetiks is the fact that it presents seven varieties of English: American, British, Australian, etc. - ESL learners won't find this anywhere else, at least not in this breathtakingly convenient mouseover format. The same goes for Parisian versus Canadian French, and German versus Swiss German.

As if this were not enough, there is also a unique "Spoken Grammar" for ESL learners, plus conversation patterns for English, French and German. More than 40 people comprised the "cast" of authentic native speakers that put this production together. This is a unique, major resource for people who love languages. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Program
Do not buy this product, i urge you! Trust me this product is hard to actually use and i am very educated in computers. I should have listened to some of the other reviews, this one is definatly horrible. Not much on it and the German before you know it, program is missing a file to run it. Please save yourself the head ache and dont buy this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Hard to Navigate
My high school age son was interested in learning German. I purchased "I Can Speak German" based on the five very positive reviews listed on Amazon. After trying this program, I now think the reviews must have been written by the company.
A language learning program should be close to intuitive to use. This cd rom was nigh unto impossible to figure out. Neither my very computer savy son nor I could figure out how to use it. I printed out fourteen pages from the Help section, made notes, but still found the program useless.
Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars REALLY GOOD BUY!!!!!!
I Can Speak German is a steal at $... If you want a really good beginner program this is the best deal out there. You get 15 lessons, grammar turtorial, alphabet reference, and a good flash card practice program which all play a crucial role in starting to help you grasp the language. This software is an excellent start for building vocabulary, basic grammar knowledge, working on pronunciation and is just a great start in general. I enjoyed this program so much that I am considering buying German Now which is another program by the same company, Transparent Language. For its price and content this program is a great buy and should get a 5 star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I Can Speak German is the best software I have found for learning German yet. This software is really worth the buy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Excellent piece of software that does exactly what it is designed to do. This is a great way to learn German because it is simple and easy to get into. Everything you need to start with is provided (unlike many other language programs) such as a German Alphabet reference, and German grammar basics along with 15 lessons in German. The various practice methods the program brings to the table such as games, flashcards, ect. make for great practice. My recomendation is this would be an excellent program to buy for German language learning. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

How can we tell that KidSpeak: 10-in-1 Language Learning is a superb language-learning package for kids? Because it's a bit too hard for Mom and Dad. The cognitive sponge that makes setting the VCR easy for your 7-year-old is the same cognitive sponge that makes foreign languages so easy--and exactly why having your kids use software like this is a terribly good idea, the younger the better.

This multi-CD package offers equally well implemented modules for Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, Hebrew, Chinese, and Portuguese. Whew! We think it's a great idea to offer 10 languages at once, because there's no telling what language your child will decide to take later on--so the more exposure earlier, the better. Plus, this number of languages won't put off kids the way it will adults--instead it will probably inspire your kid's curiosity.

Unlike adults, who freak out when they don't see new words written out, children usually handle linguistic unknowns with an instinctive curiosity. Hinting at the solid pedagogical underpinnings of its design, KidSpeak takes advantage of this instinct at every turn: in the Chinese module, for instance, Chinese characters are used right off the bat--no Romanization here. This is actually exactly what you want--unlike adults, children won't be afraid, and they'll learn the characters faster this way. Each module offers effective alphabet games, number games, animal games, a few songs with animations--all with navigation instinctive to children. None of the modules is a course in conversation--they're much more concerned with recognition of everyday words, which is a good way to introduce your kids to new languages and cultures in a fun, painless way.

Each language has its own animated host and culture-specific stylization, but the games and learning activities in each are similar and well designed. Each CD has both Macintosh and Windows versions on board, and (brilliantly) there is no installation involved--you can run each language module immediately off the CD. Especially cool: the CD includes a resourceful parents' guide and an impressive children's workbook for each language, all in PDF format you can print out at your leisure. 5-0 out of 5 stars Kidspeak 10-in-1 Langauge Learning
I have a great deal of experience with teaching foreign languages to children. By the time my daughter was 18 months old, she spoke and understood 10 foreign languages. I just received 10-in-1, two days ago. This product is outstanding. My five-year-old daughter who has been exposed to these languages before, loves the games, such as dominoes,tic-tac-toe, memory, vocabulary puzzle-building and more. I am thrilled with the product and would recommend it to anyone, child or adult to work on vocabulary, comprehension and pronunciation. It is truly an immersion program, which is best, but it has a help button if you suddenly have trouble understanig something. if you want to encourage foreign languages for you kids, buy this product.

I got it for only a couple of languages but my daughter (at 4 & 5 & 6 years old)loves to play with many of them. She will spend aquite a bit of time with it. Hard to tell if she's learning but exposure is good for young ears - and it is not "Mom, I don't want to". Of course I have never tried to put her on a regular schedule with it either.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many languages
This is a 3 CD pack. CD #l contained Spanish, French, and German. The basics of basics. My first problem is my having a Windows 98. These CD's are ment for Macintosh and Windows 95. Although it ran instantly I found it locked up after I would exit a lesson to try another language. Was this because I don't have a Win95? It was none the less annoying having to take out the CD and put it back in so I could pick another language on the CD. Another bad point was that each language has praise and instruction of the activities in the selected language which served no purpose. You had to go to the help button to see what the buttons ment in English. That slowed me down having to switch rather than having an instant translation after the foreign language was spoken. Less bouncing around if that was included. The exiting of your language lesson also was spoken/written in your selected language which was foolish. If you're learning German for instance, and you don't read German, you don't know if you're asked if you want to leave or not, and which is the yes and no. Pick the wrong one and you're still in that language when you wanted out. The Spanish in CD #l was a pain in the behind because it was Castillian Spanish, spoken in Spain and Argentina. Their "c's" are pronounced like "th" which can be very annoying if you're expecting crisp pronunciation like you'd speak in Mexico or other Latin American countries. CD #2 contained Japanese, Chinese(Mandarin),Korean, Indonesian. The Japanese was useless as there weren't that many activities and maneuvering the program was difficult because when you selected something, it didn't work. The Chinese was excellent, although I only understood "hello". Again, the CD locked up so I had to take it out and put it back in to run the Korean. Hated it. Didn't bother with Indonesian. For some reason, in the Asian languages, the tone of voice rarely changes so you don't know if the voice is happy or not. CD #3 contained Italian, Portugese, Hebrew. I enjoyed the Italian much better than the other two languages. The memory names of objects/animals/days/numbers games were fun, though I stayed away from Dominos in the math games. How many Americans have ever played Dominos! There were no directions for it either! The 3 levels of difficulty for vocabulary I was impressed with.I liked the songs too for the animals and alphabet though I could only pick out a word or two.I found I partly wasted my money because I have to ignore the Spanish, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian. I seem more suited to French, German, and Chinese. Maybe it's because I'm an adult and not a child who can learn l0 languages at once like I thought. Beware, you or your child learn no conversation. Had the CD's not locked up and had languages that turned out to be turnoffs, I would've rated this higher. I won't return this because of a few uninteresting languages. I'll have enough on my plate mastering the French, German and especially the hardest one, Chinese.

I got Kidspeak when I was much younger and still have it to this day. It's a step to beginner and very easy to understand. I find myself taking it out and studying for a french exam with it. Kidspeak introduces you to 10 languages and 10 fun characters. It includs popular Spanish to the rare Hebrew. If all your for is to know how to say hello in Italian than Kidspeak is defientely for you. I love the characters that interact with the gamer throughout the learning experience. They pronounce and sound the words and pharses wonderfully. I've gone through every language on these cds and can say proudly that I know how to count to ten in all 10 languages. To get an idea what exactly you will receive in Kidspeak here you go: Languages: Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, Hebrew, Chinese, and Portuguese on 3 cds.
I'm very glad that my mother got me this game for my sister and I. I learn so much just by clicking on a mouse. Parents, please don't deny your kid's the chance to explore so much and learn new things outside their mother tongue. The games are so rich and fun even for me, a college student.
Don't turn down this chance, seriously. I have been in love with languages for as long as I can remeber and Kidspeak brought that out in me.
