Note
I bought Discovering Egypt because the box looked interesting. Unfortunately, I found out after installing it on my system that it is NOT compatible with Windows XP. Their web site even says this (which I read after-the-fact). No update is planned by them. Please be aware of that.

Not intended for anyone over age 12!
The cd set will be quite acceptable to those who know nothing of Ancient Egypt, it's culture, history or religion. However, anyone who has even a limited knowledge of Ancient Egypt will find this set dissapointing. The serious minded seeker will not find any in-depth description or commentary about that which they seek.

I was very dissapointed and not at all impressed. A waste of money if intended to learn anything serious about Ancient Egypt.

I am homeschooling a fifth grader with attention issues and learning diablities and this helps alot. its no where in depth enough to take over for this area in her education however but it helps her become interested. National Geographic magazine has been published since 1888, andfor some people it is an absolute must-have. Older editions are especiallydifficult to obtain, however, and would-be collectors search high and low forthem. Therefore, anyone interested in having access to the magazine but whodoesn't have the space for all the paper editions (or the money to pay for them)should be tempted by National Geographic: 112 Years Collectors Edition. Its 31CDs provide scans of every page of the magazine, cover to cover, from its veryfirst edition through the December 2000 issue.

Obviously what you don't get with the electronic version is the thrill of havingthe paper magazines readily at hand. But strong compensation for this is thesearch engine that allows you to look for articles, illustrations, the famousNational Geographic maps, and even advertisements on whatever topicinterests you. Some of the scans of earlier magazines can be a little difficultto read (the paper quality was poorer, we suppose), and because these arestraightforward scans of entire pages, you can't cut and paste text or searchthe full texts of articles. But you can print pages to read away from thecomputer, and browse, browse, browse as well as research specific topics.

Don't buy this product or the Maps!
Two years ago I received the complete NG set along w/ the maps as Christmas gifts. It soon became readily apparent that the images were very difficult to read. No matter what I did would change it. They have this slider bar thing that makes the text darker and lighter, but this is just a feeble attempt to get around their problem. I returned the product to Best Buy, and have hoped ever since that the company that makes this product(Topics Entertainment) would eventually re-due it so that the images would be readable. When I saw this "new edition" come out (NG 112 years) I promptly bought it for myself as a Christmas gift. Being a bit leary, and knowing that Best Buy doesn't let you return opened software, I emailed the company (Topics) to ask if the problem had been cleared up. I waited at least a week and did not receive a response. Tonight, being Christmas Eve, I couldn't wait any longer, and promptly opened the box and tried it out. To my dismay, nothing has changed. It is the same old piece of junk as before, with a few more of the difficult-to-read issues thrown in. In my opinion, this product is terrible. I honestly can't read more than a couple pages without starting to get a headache. It is an embarrasment that a company as well-known and respected as NG could have allowed a 3rd party software company make such an inferior product! Oh, well, I guess I will have to wait until the next edition comes out and try that. By the way, I'm still going to try to return this product as I feel it is clearly defective. Hope this helps anyone else that may have similar concerns.

Better than the below reviews would lead you to believe
Although I, like the below reviewers, found the interface inefficient and cumbersome, there is no way other than owning the entire magazine collection (and dusting same)to have this absolute treasure trove. I have read of modern history in the making as the description of the turn of the last century revolution in Turkey unfolded in varius reports, watched countries develope and disappear in the decades of the 20th century. I am seriously in love with the pictures, reportage, and wealth contained in a handful of CD's. It is more than worth the price and inconvenience!

buyer beware ! No end user agreement
The 32 CD's while complete are of dubious quality. The 'front end' is terrible.

I recently(may2002) received a letter informing me that there is a new end user agreemnet and would I sign it....I dont plan to as the user agreement I have says I can "do as I wish' with the product.

So get a used one and make lots of back ups.

Completely disappointed
This CD-ROM collection is not what I expected it to be. I can't believe National Geographic is even releasing this... And considering today's level of 'digitizing' methods, this collection is very poor. The text is hardly 'readable', and viewing is unacceptable. I wrote to the software manufacturer (I believe its a third party) and not one reply. So I'm completely disappointed. Don't waste your money on this one. My living room trip to Egypt
I am a recently retired senior citizen who spend 1 to 3 hours daily at my computer. This program is the most facinating one that I own. Installation of all 4 disks was instantaneous and flawless, navigation is so simple, I did not need to read the help file before using the program. I like the ability to go anywhere in the program including exit simply by passing the mouse over the top or bottom of any screen, or, on the screen images. Graphics are beautiful and audio explanations are concise and clear. Written explanation give more detail for those who desire it. The amount of material covering all aspects of Egyptian history and geography is vast. I found the glossary helpful in explaining unfamiliar terms. The music is pleasant and suited to the material presented. Surprisingly, I would equate the overall quality of this program with that of Microsoft's Encarta. I recommend this program to anyone who has a interest in learning anything about ancient Egypt. I feel like I have visited the sites without all the rush of crowds.

Don't buy this
These CD-ROMs have lots of information, good graphics and sound, but are very difficult to navigate. There is no way to exit or end. I had to shut down my computer to get it to stop. There is no point to using them if you can't use them easily. I would not recommend this product.

So much info
I love the depth and quality of information on these cds. The only problem I had was that "Voyage in Egypt" would not install on my system, but happily I was able to run the program by clicking on the link egypt.exe on the actual cd. I would recommend these to anyone who loves Egyptology.

Three out of the four are GOOD!
The 3 CD-ROM titles of this set that I can load are spectacular! But, the fourth is an older production, and I can't load and run it on any of four separate systems! I've asked Topics Entertainment for help online, but so far have received no rsponse. Three disks for the price would seem like a good deal to me, but having one more in the box that won't run is a major disappointment.
