2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it.
This product is only good for increasing your vocab. skills with the vocabulary master. The voice record won't work with Windows 98 even after calling and trying to download a program that was supposed to fix the problem. It did however help to increase my reading ability, but not speaking ability. The program is a bit boring.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good program
It did not work well with my computer. In spite of doing a full install it was necessary to keep changing CD's. The video files would not automatically open and would not open from the CD. I had to find them on my hard drive, interrupting the lesson. It was very poorly designed and not well intergrated. I lost money on this one. It's in the trash.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I am very dissapointed in this product. I am sorry I bought it. It only comes with two lessons on the main program. I had expected a lot more! Those two lessons were definitely not worth the money. If I had known that before I opened the package, I never would have bought the product. When I called customer support to ask why I did not have any more lessons, they said I would have to buy more software. Yeah right...not in this lifetime. I do not recommend this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Visual Aids
The Complete French Learning Suite has numerous problems with it. The Vocabulary lists must be created by yourself by typing every word in, and there are glitches with the flashcard system. If you've had at least 2 years of high school French, you will find what the software offers to be too basic and simple. Not worth it if you're considering learning French beyond the few travel phrases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!
I wanted to get a jump start on French fo rmy French class @ my HS, and the teacher was amazed at my comprehension of the language. And I owe it all to this program. Its great for learning a few phrases for a trip.... or learning the whole language! A must-have if you are learning French! Even if your a teen! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

With a wide range of language-learning products now on the market, itmay seem hard to choose between them. Here's a tip: Berlitz Communicate &Connect French is definitely for the serious, adult user. While it does havesome language games and gizmos, this program takes dedication and commitment.

Communicate & Connect French is easy to install. You can practically walk awayfrom your computer while it sets itself up. Four CD-ROMS are included with theprogram, and you will need to keep them handy while you navigate the lessons. The program also installs AT&T Connect and Shockwave along with the languagesoftware.

The strongest features of Communicate & Connect French are the lesson plans, which include a lesson book and syllabus. We highly recommend that you readthrough this material before starting on the program. The included informationwill give you a head start, which is important, as this program is not conduciveto aimless browsing.

Berlitz Communicate & Connect French's weakest point is the microphone andrecording options. Recording your voice is complicated and stilted. It takessome time to learn the rhythm of the program and what you're supposed to record. While it does include a microphone, it doesn't assist the user in setting it up.We had to search through the help section to learn that one must go through asetup process. While this may be apparent to an experienced computer microphoneuser, it's not so basic to a novice. Also, make sure you have a high-qualitysound card for recording your voice, or you will not be pleased with the soundquality.

All in all, Berlitz Communicate & Connect French can be a strong tool inlearning a new language. Just make sure you have the time and inclination todedicate to this program, or you will tire of it quickly. --Kendra Hayden ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware of Syracuse Language products
This review deals not so much with this CD-ROM as with its producer, Syracuse Language. I have two Syracuse Language CD-ROMs, for French and Italian, purchased a couple of years ago. I rated them as fair, until we upgraded to Windows XP. We were not surprised when the CDs no longer worked, but we were surprised at Syracuse's attitude when we called them about upgrades. We were told that they were no longer making language CD-ROMS (a statement that this listing on amazon would tend to belie) and that no upgrades or any other assistance were available to us. No apologies for the inconvenience, no thanks for our past business. I am not the most technical, computer savvy person around but, to me, this is like buying a book and then having the ink disappear after two years.

In short, I would caution against investing in Syracuse Language products (which also go by "Knowledge Adventure" and "Sierra") as the support for products is not there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Confusing
This software, first of all, was easy to install. The microphone was hard to set up to your voice, and had to be readjusted every time a new user came on. I found it easier to use the microphone included with my computer, which runs Windows Me.

Berlitz does not start you off with basics, and it is very boring! It immediatly starts asking you to say words, without first teaching you to pronouce sounds correctly! Their "sound wave" feature, which allows you to compare your sound waves with the native speaker's, is useless. I found my waves were completetly different! It was frustrating. After Lesson 1, they start you saying words far more complicated than Bonjour, etc. I suggest French for Dummies or some other more basic program instead of this. Unless you live in France and/or have to speak French daily, don't get this program!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This software was extremely helpful in my journey to speak French. I had always trusted Berlitz and their fine, effective techniques in teaching new languages. It was easier for me to decide which of the many programs to use because of the high reviews from my peers.
The fun, lively backgrounds and real life experiences made the experiences all the more enjoyable. The interactive persona who guide you through the directions makes this a easy to learn software. This an excellent way to learn the new steps to a language! It provides excellent grammar, vocabulary, and feedback! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Whether your motives are practical, intellectual, or just plain curious,French for Dummies is an entertaining program that will most certainly teach youa little Français.

French for Dummies is easy to install. While there are two CD-ROMs, only thefirst one is required for installation. The application also includes AdobeAcrobat Reader, Macromedia Shockwave, and AT&T WorldNet software. The userenvironment is colorful and fun, and navigation is simple. There is nothing toocomplicated in the way of menus, steps, and selections, and each time you visita new section, a cartoon tutor pops up to explain what you should do next.

The best feature of French for Dummies is that it starts with the basics. Itrecommends the first thing you do as a new student is familiarize yourself withthe different sounds of French. You can listen to recordings of both male andfemale native speakers pronouncing single syllables, multiple words, andsimilar-sounding words. This feature is great for new students who cannot beginto form sentences unless they know what French sounds like. Other usefulfeatures include wide-ranging lessons, activities, and quizzes. The user goes athis or her own pace and can move forward or back, depending on learningspeed.

For those who believe practice makes perfect, French for Dummies incorporatesspeaking exercises into the learning plan. The downside is that these speakingexercises do require a microphone that does not come with the software. Forusers interested in using this option, many different microphones are availablein a variety of price ranges.

French for Dummies is ideal for anyone with a real interest in learning French. It does not promise magical learning abilities, but rather incorporates reallanguage-learning practice within the technology of interactive media. Theresult is a tutorial program that will put you well on your way to finding thatbathroom in Paris, getting a taxi in Lyons, and picking up a fresh baguette inNice. --Kendra Hayden ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars French Made Simple
I've been using this program for 3 months and I really think it's effective. It breaks down the process of learning the French language into easy, bite-size sections. Each section covers a specific area of learning that is fairly comprehensive and the coverage is just right so users should not feel overwhelmed.

One of the best features of "French for Dummies" are the interactive word games. They might not sound serious at first, but they sure are fun, and sometimes make me forget that I'm studying French. They sure work. The words really stick. Another cool feature is the interactive voice recognition where you are made to pronounce words. The program will emit a ring sound if you get the pronunciation right and an irritating "question mark sound" if you don't. It's a good way to force you to say the words properly.

Overall, this is a really well-designed program for learning basic French. And for its low price, you really get a lot of bang-for-the-buck. I liked this program so much that I've also bought the "Spanish for Dummies" tutorial CD-ROM.

My only complaint is that it's difficult to find information about the whole line of Dummies language tutorial CD-ROMs. I only found out that "Spanish for Dummies" existed is when I passed by a PC software store. It's not listed in [Amazon.com]. Information about this great line of language tutorials should be made easily available. Even the Syracuse Language Systems website is not provided. I even had to search for it on the Net but unfortunately, the website doesn't seem to be working. I'd sure like to know what other languages are available.

Still, "French for Dummies" is a great buy. Oh, and by the way, it works on my Windows XP system.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Surprise!
I started taking VERY expensive private French lessons 12 weeks ago, and was really frustrated in what I thought was my inability to learn French. My accent (or lack of) had become so embarrassing, I was reluctant to even TRY to speak. I was about to give up altogether when while on line, looking for a French/English dictionary I saw the "French for Dummies" CD. The exceptional price and good reviews persuaded me to give it a try. WOW! What a great surprise! I can honestly tell you that one [intensive] week with this highly INTERACTIVE program has improved my comprehension and pronunciation as much if not more than 12 weeks of private tutoring! You'll be surprised at how many differant types of presentations there are! (video, games, language lab)I LOVE THE LANGUAGE LAB! It's a huge help to be able to practice making the SOUNDS of French (in PRIVATE!:-)) and get INSTANT feedback. I also really like the video clips of the native French speakers, It's been very helpful to me to be able to SEE the language spoken. While this program is certainly intended for someone with a little or no prior French, it isn't remedial'it's A LOT of FUN! Just as I was beginning to get really frustrated, and think I just couldn't learn French' "French For Dummies' has reinvigorated my desire to master French!! You'll love the logical and functional way the lessons are laid out, the ease of knwing where you are in the lesson progression, as well as the quality of the software. Most importantly you'll learn FRENCH! Give it a try' you'll parler Francais in no time!

PS
While you can order a headset / mic thru a special offer from Syracuse, I think it's worth it to go get one BEFORE your CD arrives so you can get started RIGHT AWAY! HAVE FUN!

1-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of games, but where's the French?
C'est Dommage! Je n'amie pas La Francais pour Dummies. I bought this when I decided to teach myself French. (Basically because I like to read about the sport of cycling, I love their bread and I have nothing better to do.) It's been a few months now and I can at least get the jist of the articles in Le Monde, but my listening and speaking ability have a long way to go.

Unfortunatley, French for Dummies has been no help what-so-ever. The games just aren't useful for learning. Most of the vocabulary games are similar to a game of concentration - so you spend your time trying to remember where la voiture is rather than what une voiture is. It may entertain younger children, but I I found if very frustrating. It's a shame because it has a nice appearance and looks professionally done. It just wasn't useful.

I bought A+ French at the same time and found it much more useful at 1/3 the cost. What I like most about A+ is that it will read aloud (slow or fast) as you read the text. After reading along a few times I close my eyes and listen. In this way I begin to seperate the words and improve my listening skills. Its vocabulary games are cross-words (with help when needed). Typing in the words from memory is a better way to learn than point and click.

The Dummies program was also slow to load chapters, and would only accept the CD in my d: drive, not the e: (which happens to be faster and quieter)

But here is some useful advice for anyone learning French on a computer. If your CD drive is too loud (that spin-up to 40x sounds like an indy-car) download the free utility "CD-rom tool". You can then (temporarily) set your drive's max speed to 4x or 8x. That's plenty fast for this level of data transfer, and it will be quiet as a whisper - allowing you to hear and speak la francais.

3-0 out of 5 stars PC Tied Made Me Tongue Tied
This is well written software... but, I would have benefited more from either having a tape or a CD with a player to play the words and phrases I needed while I commuted on train and bus in France this last year.

What I found helpful with this product:
(1) Categories to select kinds of words to listen repeatedly to.
(2) Listening to both male and female speaking the words.

What I did not find helpful:
(1) The speak-back feature where I spoke and the software "graded" my performance. It helped in that it showed I often put the wrong emphasis on certain syllables. It did not help beyond that because speech recognition software is too primitive.
(2) Games -- these greatly annoyed me.
(3) Being tied to my laptop. I needed to listen and practice more than when it was convenient to have my laptop and fire it up in crowded situations.

I worked in an office setting where English was the second language. What I needed most was learning French for everyday use in the grocery market, such as hearing and speaking decimal numbers to conduct Euro transactions, conversing with the banker, and handling phone conversations with appliance repair people. French For Dummies didn't help in these areas as I had hoped, but then no product may have helped.

The best thing for an American in Paris for 6 - 12 months is to find one of the free French classes that are offered in Paris, with a live teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun , Fun, Fun - A Great Program for Learning French
I've had so much fun with "French for Dummies". What I like about this program is the way that it's set up. It's just like having a language lab in your own home. "French for Dummies" consist of several games that teaches the learner extended vocabulary and verb terms. I really like the video clips of the speakers, which show you how to pronounce the words and phrases. One of my favorite sections of the program is the pronounciation lab, where you learn different sounds of the french language. This program would especially be great for novices and students. You learn a great deal considering the program's low price, so it's worth the money spent. Also you must have a microphone for this program. "French for Dummies" has an offer, in which you can purchase a headset microphone ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
This CD-ROM has all you need to go from "Beginner" to "Intermediate" level proficiency in French. I couldn't imagine an easier way to learn French. Each phrase and sentence can be repeated as many times as needed in order for you to understand the pronounciation. You can also click on an individual word in the phrase/sentence and hear it repeated apart from the sentence (since all the words in French sentences seem to run together, this is very helpful). Not to mention, you can also slow-down each word/phrase/sentence in order to clearly hear how it sounds. I have some other French self-teaching material, and unlike those, this one teaches you the grammar from the beginning instead of just throwing you into the language (which is very frustrating). I highly recommend this product. If you purchase a book or two in addition to this (such as "English Grammar for Students of French" by Morton) you'll be set. ... Read more
