2-0 out of 5 stars Less than I had hoped for
This product has the potential for excellence. However there are several features through out the CD which were unavailable. For example, the on-line lessons did not exist. When I called the technical support. I was told they did not know when they would be available.

Some features are very good however. The dictionary is worth the price of the software. And the book is excellent. It is the actual lessons, the lack of clear information, how to use the features which is so disappointing. I would not re-buy this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well for me!
I bought this product to supplement private lessons to prepare for a trip to Austria. I had ten weeks to get ready.

For [price] the product is pretty good. The software worked fine on my Windows XP laptop and the audio supplement CD also worked fine.

The book seems quite comprehensive and extends well beyond my simple needs or ability. The basics are covered in the first few pages. It includes written dialogs to complement the interactive lessons.

The lessons so far have proven helpful in reinforcing and expanding my weekly face-to-face lessons. It has also allowed me to venture into specific areas I know I will need, such as travel dialogs: where is the train station, can I make a reservation, how much is a taxi to the hotel.

The book includes a vocabulary section, but that is a small piece of a large book. I plan to buy a pocket dictionary for my trip.

One warning: the speech recognition feature is extremely generous and forgiving. I found I could say entirely different words and still get a rating well above average for pronunciation. Anyone who relies on this program may be quite surprised when they meet a German speaker in person. Find some other way of checking your pronuciation before you entrench bad habits!

On the plus side, any feedback at all encourages people to talk. The simple listen-repeat of an audio-only lesson plan doesn't engage as much as this. I just ignore the "accuracy meter" and its lavish praise of my native-like accent. Yeah, right! :)

My only REAL problem with the software: that stupid cartoon bird that inroduces each section. The good news is you can skip him entirely, he adds no important content and doesn't show up durind the lessons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Software to learn spoken german
I have been very pleased with this purchase. It is well tailored to teach spoken German. The software starts with basic words and fairly quickly introduces conversation sequences from relevant situations. Voice recording allows the user to hear is own voice and compare it with that of a native speaker a feature which helps learning the correct pronunciation. Grammar is reviewed thoroughly but is not very well exercised.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn German Software
This is a great product and at a great price too. Comes with 5 CD's and a booklet.... This is worth your money ! You won't regret it. I got "Learn German Now 8.0 " by Transparent Language for Christmas and it's not for beginners. But, since there is a lot of things on the software to took me 10-15 minutes just to download.

2-0 out of 5 stars Learning German 8.1
This has a good text book and a pretty good listening to phrases CD. But the PC CD's don't allways work and in fact I had some trouble trying to reload after some problems that crashed my system. In fact it has never worked since. So I am unhappy with this product because it has been mostly user unfriendly and a waste of time and money for me...David G ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 Languages WOW
101 Languages Of The World is a fascinating product. Not only can you learn the basics of many more common languages, but you can learn uncommon languages like Macedonian or Swazi. The great variety offered in this product makes it well worth the buy. There are many interactive games that help you to practice and learn the language(s). The audio features are incredible. There are native speakers for all the languages so you can hear the correct pronunciations and even speak into the computer so it can compare your pronunciation with that of the native's. 101 Languages of the World is great for learning a huge variety languages, for all purposes and for all levels of study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy
I am very glad I bought this program. While it is true that the instruction is strictly beginner's level, and the native script is missing for most non-Latin based languages, this is still a great tool if you want to sample a large number of languages and decided which ones to take further with a more detailed course. This is also great for people studying a more exotic language for which there aren't any stand-alone audio programs for you to practice pronunciation.

But the biggest bonus for me was the included Global Writer word processor which allows you to type in all kinds of scripts, including Japanese, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Korean, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, Hindi and many, many others. This program alone was worth the twenty bucks! No more playing around with Unicode or fooling with special characters in Word. This is the best software value I've found in years.

If I had one complaint it would be that some minor languages are included, like Breton, Galician, and Quechua, but some major languages, like Cantonese, spoken by over 50 million Chinese, and many languages of India are not included.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
Great things come in tiny packages, I saw this on sale for $9.00 at circuit city, and though skeptical it would be worth much, thought $9.00 isn't much of a gamble. This was like a slot machine that paid off! I am just blown away by the quality of this program and the extent of language instruction involved. Granted, this is NOT a program on which to found your study of your choice language, but as a supplement and interactive aid on DOZENS of languages, you will find plenty to learn. Where this program is especially helpful is with minor languages where there just aren't many resources or opportunities to hear native speakers, or build a vocabulary. I'm personally interested in more exotic languages, such as Bengali, Lithuanian, Slovene, etc., and can now listen to the dialogues and speak along with the script, and I've committed much vocabulary to memory. This CD lets you hear genuine native speakers converse on a myriad of topics, and then test your knowledge of what you've learned. If you are interested in MANY languages, and like comparing various types (Russian w/ Polish; Sicilian w/ Italian; Finnish w/ Estonian, etc.) then you have a great research tool. Now if you're looking to bone up on a major language such as Spanish, French, etc., there is a good dose of vocab here, but you're probably better off with one of the many dedicated audio or software language programs - though assuming you too can buy this program cheap, what you will get as far as dialog practice more than justifies the price. The real value here, however, is the info and practice you get with rarer languages, and for the simplicity and compactness of this little program. Neat!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Money
I am a student that studies 5 languages currently. I am very much into languages and I thought this would help me. I bought this software specifically for Icelandic, Vietnamese, Arabic, German, and Inuktitut. Turns out that the only helpful and useful language title was German. Most, actually all of the other languages just gives phrases to practice, and it is the exact phrases as the other languages. It makes learning a language fun, GUARANTEED! Dont purchase this software if you would like to learn a language that is on here. If you are really interested in learning a specific language, purchase Rosetta Stone Software. It may be a little bit of money, but it is definatley worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Diverse and Adaptable Product
101 Languages of the World is a very satisfying product for what it is. The great diversity offered in the product is amazing, being able to learn 101 languages with a piece of software is unbelievable. I really love the fact that in one instance I can be learning Farsi and the next be practicing my Tagalog. It is truely a great product because it is well put together software and has immense content. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
I would never recommend this software to anyone who was actually interested in learning a language. They taught you the days of the week out of order... numbers out of order... it was a HUGE pain. I'm just going to check out books and tapes from the library and learn the old fashion way. :(

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Software
Probably one of the worst pieces of boxed software I've seen. I've been learning Japanese on my own for 6 months and would really like some software to help me drill and provide some structure. This is not it. No manual, the microphone works on one computer but not on another, you need to have the CD in the drive (no way to install completely to disk), voice recognition is terrible, etc. Spend money on something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crushes Hopes of Learning Japanese
I made the mistake of asking someone to buy this software as a gift, since I really wanted to start learning Japanese. Nothing but problems. First, it seems more advanced, but that's not it. It may seem advanced but it's really only poorly designed and does not function properly.

As someone has already mentioned, the lessons don't work when you click on them. Also, there is no sense involved with the usability. Zero stars for ease of use.

Instant Immersion Japanese Deluxe probably crushed my hopes of trying to learn Japanese. Stay away from this product at all costs, it is enirely misleading. I suggest you check around Amazon for books/software that really do help you, as I'll be doing the same.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Software I have ever bought
The only thing good about this software is that it can be held up as an example of how not to design user interfaces and how not to teach a language.

The user interfaces is slow, frustrating to use, non-intuitive, and looks like something you'd expect to see on an Apple II.

The software itself consists mainly of drills with no teaching.... which is essentially useless if you have no prior experience with the language. Forget learning grammar or anything with the crap.

I've gone with the Pimseleur Level 1 & 2 courses...much more expensive but worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
I bought this title just last night in the hopes of finding good software to help me learn japanese. Within about 5 minutes of installing it, I was ready to return it. It comes with no book, so I had to guess what all the CDs were first of all. After I figured that out, the program itself was confusing to navigate. What I discovered were a lot of weak looking drills that were basically for testing what I already knew about the japanese language. Unfortunately, what I know is NOTHING--that's why I bought the software in the first place!! I'm assuming that the "lesson" portion of the program was to teach me, but seeing how nothing happened when I clicked it, that didn't really help... (XP issue?). Hopefully BestBuy will let me return it even though I opened it... I really want my money back. If you want to learn japanese, you're probably better off getting a book instead. It may be harder, but at least you'll learn more from that than this software. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars EuroTalk Lacks Depth
The CD has minimal content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Norwegian the fun way
I am a Scot living in Australia who married a Norwegian. I wanted to learn some Norwegian ready for when I make my first visit to Norway. So the place to start was the 'Talk Now! Norwegian' CD which I thought it might be a fun way to learn some basic Norwegian, and it was.
I found the CD easy to install on my computer and easy to work through the different lessons, covering first words, food, phrases, time etc. The aim is to make 100% on each of the quizzes that are with the lessons, so far I have not quite reached that point, just missing the odd question or two in a couple of the quizzes. You can print the picture dictionaries as a study aid, you can also print your score award sheets.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn language basics. Other products from the Eurotalk company are 'World Talk' which is at the intermediate level, and 'Vocabulary Builder' which is for children 3 - 12years (but might be also be helpful for some of the bigger kids too).
Enjoy. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

With the modern PC having a variety of possibilities of which traditional language-learning methods could only dream--voice recognition, video dialogues, and so on--the past few years have seen an extraordinary boom in language-learning software packages. However, as picking through this surfeit can be tricky, it is important to find a reliable brand, and the Learn Now! series is definitely among the best software packages.

The program comes equipped with 2 CDs, one of which has various key sections--useful "survival phrases", fun activities, conversations, and practicing speech against the voice of a native speaker--while the other has a thorough grammar tutorial. This combination is certainly a valuable one for people who are serious about learning a language, and the product is clear and easy to use: in role-plays, phrases are highlighted in a box and their English translations placed underneath, while the voice recognition software allows you to measure your own voice against that of a native speaker, and the games hone the things that have been learnt. Sections are tailored to various activities, such as getting around, going out, and business situations, while at any point you can call up a grammar tutorial which explains a particular point on which you are unsure.

In addition to these sections, the part on survival phrases will be of much use to those who have already reached a basic level. There are several practice dialogues based around commonplace situations--in the hotel, the bar, the airport, etc. Although some of the advice borders on the infantile ("When you decide to travel outside the USA, you will probably need a passport"), much of it is useful, and rounds out what is a well composed package for someone starting out on the road to using the language overseas. --Toby Green, Amazon.co.uk ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Chinese Now is an excellent program for language learning. I am more than satisfied by its effetiveness and what it has to offer as a product. I found that it has very few flaws and is for all ability level speakers. Chinese is a hard language to learn and so far this program is the best method I have found for myself. Its a 5-star program and a good buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars What an amazing Tool
Hi I'm an English teacher who teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) to students in China. Before starting this job I took a Madarin Chinese class and found it very hard. I got this program and using it helped me immensly. I was able to put into practice what I learned in class through this program. This provided excellent practice in pronunciation and contains a very large vocabulary section. The games and media were very good tools to practice and learn with, especially Vocabulous, my favorite game. After the class, when I was in China, I still used this program to help keep my language skills sharp and to expand my knowledge of it. Chinese Now is a very good learning program and it works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Advance Level
Wow, this package is really hard. If you are a beginner, stay away. This package is a lot harder than Ultimate Mandarin. I consider myself intermediate, but this package blew me away. Anyway, other package like Rosetta stone chinese is pretty .... VocabuLearn is also a lot .... This package has tons of vocabulary which is much better than VocabuLearn Chinese. This package is much better than in a chinese classroom because you can listen one word by one word for pronunciation. Anyway, ChineseNow is very similar to a classroom experience, except that their vocabularies and sentences are very very difficult. If transparentlanguage company uses easy vocabularies with the same effort, I think they will be much more successful. Why? Because in ChineseNow, they worked very hard and put a lot of effort in producing this CD, but I just think that they are targetting the wrong audience. For me, after one year of Conversation Mandarin, I am starting on Ultimate Mandarin which this will cost me another year. Then, I will attack this ChineseNow CD again. This ChineseNow is one serious material, just too hard...

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good stuff for the price
I picked up version 8 of this at a store. The box said it works with Mac OS 8 and up, but did not specify OS X. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a native application (carbonised) for OS X, so I did not have to run it inside of the Classic environment, like I do with a couple other chinese apps I have. So that is one big plus for it.

I find that it is a very good supplement to my college text book and other chinese apps. No one app (or book) can be the best at everything, but this comes pretty close. Not great at learning characters, the strength was in learning PinYin and vocabulary. This is version 8.1 I'm talking about, not version 9.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for the Price
I have struggled through several introductory chinese language products, and to date this has been the most useful for conversational development. It is not a full integrated course, in that it is conversation and pinyin, but even my Chinese friends consider that a good beginning. It has an amazing collection of learning methods in an inexpensive package.

Chinese is extremely difficult to start. It has taken me many hours to get get down the most basic phrases. I found this, along with the Pimsleur programs to be the most helpful. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I felt like I wasted my money.
After the glowing review I decided to try this product out. After only 3 hours this disc was useless to me. There is very little information on here let alone usefull information. In no time one can complete the entire program. There aren't any pronouns included which I expected would have minimally been there. The disc also can't be run off of the hard drive so one has to wait for the program to load every few seconds while listening to the life of ones cd drive wear away. A great idea that has fallen horribly short. A simple phrase book would have been more beneficial.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, a great buy for the beginner
In New York Finnish language courses are hard to come by. I have been trying to teach myself to read, speak and hopefully write Finnish for years so I could speak with my cousins and grandmother overseas. It was a daunting task because books left me uninspired and tapes just don't work for me. Finally as a last ditch effort I took a chance on this program. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the program actually makes the process of learning language fun. The program and quizzes are colorful and engaging and manage to combine, listening, reading, understanding and speaking into one fun exercise. I have progressed with this program 100% faster than with the methods I've tried before. I definitely recommend this program to anyone who would like to start learning Finnish.
For those who are a bit more advanced or are anxious to get to the next level the Intermediate level for this program is World Talk Finnish. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Instant Immersion American Sign Language package is a four-CD-ROM set that will get you started in learning the language of the deaf. The four discs attempt to meet the individual learning styles and needs of students of ASL.

The SigningAvatar Friends disc is the most visually impressive of the four. Using the same video animation as you'd find in some of today's popular games, the characters come to life and interact with you in sign. This is a flexible application, allowing you to adjust the signing speed and the angle at which you view the signs, and select the character you favor most. The characters can each translate phrases for you, of any length, or you can follow along as they tell you their life story.

The SignLink disc will be a great supplemental resource for those looking to find specific signs for words in English or to learn about deaf culture. The lexicon provides over 2,000 signs, presented in clear, QuickTime format. Also on this disc are other sections that are much like a printed book, covering ASL parameters (like hand position, movement, non-manual behavior, and so on), grammar, and American deaf culture. This disc is definitely good for practice and felt very inviting to us.

The other two discs, Personal Communicator and HyperSign Kids, were more disappointing. Comparing the high video quality and wide-reaching content presented in the first two discs, we found that these two had little to offer. There was little age-specific content on the Kids disc (other than a child's voice pronouncing each word); in fact, both of these discs shared poor-quality video and uninviting interfaces. The picture identification and matching games on the children's version were the best feature of both of these discs overall.

A note about install: each disc functions as its own standalone package. Unfortunately, none required a system restart or indicated that one was necessary. However, we found that the restart is necessary after each installation and trying to install another package without restarting led to system problems for us. The SignLink disc had additional problems because it required the installation of a very old version of QuickTime (2.1) and would not proceed without installing it.

Overall, we highly recommend the first two discs of this set as strong learning tools for those interested in learning American Sign Language and getting a sense of American deaf culture. --Emilie Herbst ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Instant Immersion American Sign Language
This is a very good program. It helps you learn the proper hand formations and gives you a visual example of how to do each sign. It also has a conversations section where you can learn to read the signs. It's almost like having a study buddy. I recommmended it to a friend. I rated it a four because a few words are not in it, but I just looked them up in my sign dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for a beginner
I bought it a few years ago, and still I use it as my reference for many unknown signs or phrases. 4 CD's come in total. There's one that's called SignLink, and it's the best. It gives you a background on American Sign Language and it's so far the most helpful. The other 3 CD's are ok but mostly slow on my system (Windows XP). But try them first and see what you think. All in all, they're helpful if you're starting to learn ASL. I really recommend this program. And to you, reader, if you buy it, I recommend discipline to keep up with your learning program.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Marketing for a Threadbare Product
The first couple of reviews are most apt.

Bad product, poor implementation.

It's cheap for a reason.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you're serious about learning ASL, pass this one by...
I've been signing for almost ten years, and my wife works professionally as an interpreter. I recently picked this package up as a handy refresher to keep my skills sharp. For under $$$, it seemed like a good deal. Unfortunately, this suite of "learning tools" left a lot to be desired. First of all, if you're using XP, expect a whole slew of compatibility problems. The few programs I was able to get working suffered from very poor interface design, and worse yet, presented the user with incorrect information. For example, the Personal Communicator lets the user type in English phrases to get a video ASL interpretation. What the program displayed for you was a literal English word-order translation of the phrase. Words that did not appear in the sparse word list were then fingerspelled. There was absolutely no consideration of ASL grammar or structure. Thus, a sentence like "How long have you been an interpreter?" was translated with the literal signs for "how" (as in, "how does this work?"), "long" (as in "that road is long"), "have" (as in "can I have some water?"), and so on. If you've ever taken a real ASL course, you know how wrong this is. A true ASL representation should have read something like "interpreter how-long (time) you?" In all fairness, creating a program advanced enough to do such an accurate conversion would probably cost much more, but by presenting new ASL students with this sort of misrepresentation is destructive to the language rather than constructive. Another program, the English-ASL dictionary, is nothing more than a copy of a University of Michigan ASL web site, not a carefully designed learning aid for home use.

Bottom line, if you're really serious about learning this wonderful language, do yourself a favor and enroll in a class at a local college or community center. It is the ONLY way to truly learn this language and begin to experience deaf culture. If you want to practice at home, I would recommend The American Sign Language Dictionary 10th Anniversary Edition. It's far more accurate and does a much better job of teaching ASL grammar, deaf culture, and sign vocabulary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great first words vocabulary builder
This is a nice program that shows you pictures and pronounces the words. And has quiz games where you match one of a choice of pictures to the word sounds. The games are very helpful in developing recognition of spoken Khmer words.

Since Khmer is so different from English, you can not learn Khmer from a book alone. You need something that will pronounce the words so that you can hear the sounds. I had some of my Cambodina friends listen to it and they said the pronouncenations were good.

I recommend this for the absolute beginner of Khmer. ... Read more
