Amazon.com Product Description Reviews (11)
Some features are very good however. The dictionary is worth the price of the software. And the book is excellent. It is the actual lessons, the lack of clear information, how to use the features which is so disappointing. I would not re-buy this product.
For [price] the product is pretty good. The software worked fine on my Windows XP laptop and the audio supplement CD also worked fine. The book seems quite comprehensive and extends well beyond my simple needs or ability. The basics are covered in the first few pages. It includes written dialogs to complement the interactive lessons. The lessons so far have proven helpful in reinforcing and expanding my weekly face-to-face lessons. It has also allowed me to venture into specific areas I know I will need, such as travel dialogs: where is the train station, can I make a reservation, how much is a taxi to the hotel. The book includes a vocabulary section, but that is a small piece of a large book. I plan to buy a pocket dictionary for my trip. One warning: the speech recognition feature is extremely generous and forgiving. I found I could say entirely different words and still get a rating well above average for pronunciation. Anyone who relies on this program may be quite surprised when they meet a German speaker in person. Find some other way of checking your pronuciation before you entrench bad habits! On the plus side, any feedback at all encourages people to talk. The simple listen-repeat of an audio-only lesson plan doesn't engage as much as this. I just ignore the "accuracy meter" and its lavish praise of my native-like accent. Yeah, right! :) My only REAL problem with the software: that stupid cartoon bird that inroduces each section. The good news is you can skip him entirely, he adds no important content and doesn't show up durind the lessons.

But the biggest bonus for me was the included Global Writer word processor which allows you to type in all kinds of scripts, including Japanese, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Korean, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, Hindi and many, many others. This program alone was worth the twenty bucks! No more playing around with Unicode or fooling with special characters in Word. This is the best software value I've found in years. If I had one complaint it would be that some minor languages are included, like Breton, Galician, and Quechua, but some major languages, like Cantonese, spoken by over 50 million Chinese, and many languages of India are not included.

As someone has already mentioned, the lessons don't work when you click on them. Also, there is no sense involved with the usability. Zero stars for ease of use. Instant Immersion Japanese Deluxe probably crushed my hopes of trying to learn Japanese. Stay away from this product at all costs, it is enirely misleading. I suggest you check around Amazon for books/software that really do help you, as I'll be doing the same.
The user interfaces is slow, frustrating to use, non-intuitive, and looks like something you'd expect to see on an Apple II. The software itself consists mainly of drills with no teaching.... which is essentially useless if you have no prior experience with the language. Forget learning grammar or anything with the crap. I've gone with the Pimseleur Level 1 & 2 courses...much more expensive but worth it.

Amazon.com Review The program comes equipped with 2 CDs, one of which has various key sections--useful "survival phrases", fun activities, conversations, and practicing speech against the voice of a native speaker--while the other has a thorough grammar tutorial. This combination is certainly a valuable one for people who are serious about learning a language, and the product is clear and easy to use: in role-plays, phrases are highlighted in a box and their English translations placed underneath, while the voice recognition software allows you to measure your own voice against that of a native speaker, and the games hone the things that have been learnt. Sections are tailored to various activities, such as getting around, going out, and business situations, while at any point you can call up a grammar tutorial which explains a particular point on which you are unsure. In addition to these sections, the part on survival phrases will be of much use to those who have already reached a basic level. There are several practice dialogues based around commonplace situations--in the hotel, the bar, the airport, etc. Although some of the advice borders on the infantile ("When you decide to travel outside the USA, you will probably need a passport"), much of it is useful, and rounds out what is a well composed package for someone starting out on the road to using the language overseas. --Toby Green, Amazon.co.uk Reviews (6)
I find that it is a very good supplement to my college text book and other chinese apps. No one app (or book) can be the best at everything, but this comes pretty close. Not great at learning characters, the strength was in learning PinYin and vocabulary. This is version 8.1 I'm talking about, not version 9.
Chinese is extremely difficult to start. It has taken me many hours to get get down the most basic phrases. I found this, along with the Pimsleur programs to be the most helpful. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description We all learn our childhood language by associating new words and phrases with the world around us. The Rosetta Stone method replicates this process by presenting vivid, real-life images to convey the meaning of each new phrase. Instead of translating, memorizing, and studying rules of grammar, you actually learn to think in the new language. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated systematically, leading to everyday proficiency. It's the natural way to learn. The Rosetta Stone Explorer contains 22 lessons for beginning learners with nearly 900 real-life images and phrases spoken by native speakers. It develops all key language skills--listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing--while its systematic structure teaches vocabulary and grammar naturally, without lists and drills. Includes previews, exercises, and tests for every lesson, with automated tutorials throughout the program. (Ages 6 and older) Reviews (3)

Amazon.com Review The SigningAvatar Friends disc is the most visually impressive of the four. Using the same video animation as you'd find in some of today's popular games, the characters come to life and interact with you in sign. This is a flexible application, allowing you to adjust the signing speed and the angle at which you view the signs, and select the character you favor most. The characters can each translate phrases for you, of any length, or you can follow along as they tell you their life story. The SignLink disc will be a great supplemental resource for those looking to find specific signs for words in English or to learn about deaf culture. The lexicon provides over 2,000 signs, presented in clear, QuickTime format. Also on this disc are other sections that are much like a printed book, covering ASL parameters (like hand position, movement, non-manual behavior, and so on), grammar, and American deaf culture. This disc is definitely good for practice and felt very inviting to us. The other two discs, Personal Communicator and HyperSign Kids, were more disappointing. Comparing the high video quality and wide-reaching content presented in the first two discs, we found that these two had little to offer. There was little age-specific content on the Kids disc (other than a child's voice pronouncing each word); in fact, both of these discs shared poor-quality video and uninviting interfaces. The picture identification and matching games on the children's version were the best feature of both of these discs overall. A note about install: each disc functions as its own standalone package. Unfortunately, none required a system restart or indicated that one was necessary. However, we found that the restart is necessary after each installation and trying to install another package without restarting led to system problems for us. The SignLink disc had additional problems because it required the installation of a very old version of QuickTime (2.1) and would not proceed without installing it. Overall, we highly recommend the first two discs of this set as strong learning tools for those interested in learning American Sign Language and getting a sense of American deaf culture. --Emilie Herbst Reviews (10)
Bad product, poor implementation. It's cheap for a reason.
Bottom line, if you're really serious about learning this wonderful language, do yourself a favor and enroll in a class at a local college or community center. It is the ONLY way to truly learn this language and begin to experience deaf culture. If you want to practice at home, I would recommend The American Sign Language Dictionary 10th Anniversary Edition. It's far more accurate and does a much better job of teaching ASL grammar, deaf culture, and sign vocabulary.

Since Khmer is so different from English, you can not learn Khmer from a book alone. You need something that will pronounce the words so that you can hear the sounds. I had some of my Cambodina friends listen to it and they said the pronouncenations were good. I recommend this for the absolute beginner of Khmer. ... Read more
