Rosetta sends you on the way
I found the Rosetta Stone Method effective to get me on the way to learn the language I needed: Russian. It was the very key break-thru element in my attempts to learn it. I would never had have success without it.

It distinguishes itself very favorably from any other computer-based language training, in that it really sends one on the way, and keeps one there thru the first, always troublesome steps.

However be informed, that it is not self-sufficient. You need a grammar, a dictionary, a good understanding of language structures (i.e. the grammatics of your own or another indogerman language), and more material. I took a lot of text and audio (internet radio) from the internet. I used also other audio/textbook courses to get more volume and substance. Even Mickey Mouse and some pre-school children books in the target language have been helpful. This mix made it sufficient, with Rosetta as the key driving element.

Rosetta Stone does not tell you about these, but the implicit assumption is that of accompanying a teached course. Like the NASA astronauts had, evidently. They were not on their own. ... Read more

The Best Program for English as a Second Language
When my cousin and her family arrived from Venezuela to join our family business, I knew that the first thing we needed to do was to teach them English. I asked around and found that the Rosetta Stone was the best program that they used in all the schools here in Miami. We bought the Level One and were soon amazed to see how fast my cousin and her seven year old daughter began to learn English. We all have a lot of fun with this program and it has so many beautiful pictures. Now my cousin is working with us and she is speaking English to the customers. We bought the Level Two which has even more lessons than the Level One, and some of the pictures are little movies! I still can't use because display a message error
In the firts lesson when i click the firts option display a error message..

I try in 2 diferents pc's 2 diferent's xp (english and spanish version).

when the error appears , it is continued listening the sound, sees menu above, but the area where the lesson must visualize appears in blank (white screen).

then if i press back button in the menu i saw the previous screen.

P.D. sorry for my english, but i really speak spanish and therefore I bought its product.

The customer service just say it's the firts time they had this problem.

Rosetta Stone English Explorer
Great product- but only contains 22 lessons. You must upgrade to get the rest of the level-one lessons (total of 92). It costs 140$ to upgrade. This should be mentioned up front.

Cheap and easy to install in your computer. I used for some relatives who does not speak English and they are learning English in easy way. I strongly recommend this software.

Total Junk
This product is total junk. I bought this not too long ago and realized what a big mistake that was. This software has a funny interface that is not at all user friendly. Hard to get around things, totally non-intutive. Waste of money.

Other reviewers were right!
When I bought home the 7 CD pack, I opened it immediately. I just wanted to know how the vocabulary builder helps an average english speaking adult, like myself.

I tried the CD 5, a vocabulary builder. I realized it was for real rookies (read: grade 1 kids). The flash cards had cards for such mundane words like: eating, drinking, supermarket, trees etc... hope you are getting the drift. At about 200 words/flash cards maximum - taught through 9 different entry points, the content doesn't justify 600+MB of space it occupied on the CD (Remember Microsoft Encarta originally came in 1 CD). Amazing is that how they wasted valuable space to store .wav files for nearly 3 dozen languages to teach from! As noted by other reviewers, this is a hotchpotch collection. If this is what I sampled, I am not even wasting my time opening other CDs.

You are better off reading books.

this program is clumsy
I brought this program for my relaitves who came from India and I found it very clumsy and difficult to navigate and use. The applications on the different CDs are not cohesive and I find the whole process of using the applications difficult to use 1) I can't click on the different options too well 2) It teaches only very basic sentences 3) Does not teach any grammar. I was better off teaching my relatives by myself.

Don't buy this program!
This program is terribly unfriendly to the first time user. I speak perfect English and it gave me fits. I pity the fool who doesn't speak English and tries to use this. It requires the patience of Job. Actually this is not at all a unified program, but several separate programs offered as a unit. When you try to install it, it wants to change your computer. I had to uninstall everything after making the mistake of letting the program adjust the computer's resolution. It forced me to reinstall Windows before I could get it to work at all. Disk 1 is for instalation only, to work disks 2, 3, and 4. Don't think you learned anything when you finish #4. Numbers 5, 6 and 7 are completely different and you have to start from scratch with each one, if you haven't thrown the whole thing out by then. If the producers of this product had any sense, they would have built some uniformity into the program to make it easy to install and use, put good labels on the icons to describe each action, and made it flow with easy to follow progression instead of the chaos they provided. Bad, worse and terrible describe this program. And you can tell them I said so.

Plus See; Minus Touch
I am not a native speaker of English living in the US since a couple of months, and I am still learning English. My teachers say I am smart enough to learn English very quickly, and I could teach my native language to Americans. Well, I believe these CDs are what I want, but I cannot afford to buy them now, because I spent some money on buying a book on language from amazon.com (the best web site for such stuff) yesterday. A fun way to immerse in English
This CD set is quiet user friendly for foreigners who already know some English, but need to hear the native accent more and to get some interactive simulation. I bought this for a friend in China who worked for a American firm, and she love it.

Disappointing
After reading the other review, I can say I was pretty shocked when I got the product and reviewed it. The program is definitely not for people who are trying to learn English. Perhaps it is better suited for people who are trying to improve pronunication or learn appropriate phrases.

Example: There is a module where the user is to identify parts of the car. The English voice-over says: "These are made of rubber and are filled with air". The user is to select the blue dot pointing to a tire. My cousin sat there not knowing what "rubber" or "air" meant, let alone know to select the picture of the tire.

Another "real life" example has the user observe a conversation in a restaurant. The conversation goes back and forth without any visuals other than the static picture of the waiter and customer. They go back and forth with, "Hello, how are you?" "I am fine." "What can I get for you?" "I would like a glass of water with ice, please."

Again, my cousin sat there looking at the screen, impressed with the voice-over but not learning anything about speaking English.

Very disappointing. The graphics are quite [disappointing], too.

Obsoleted when it came out
I see so many people who brought it in 2003 or 2004 say it's obsolete because they couldn't download the internet lessons. Guess what, I brought it directly from The Learning Company when it came out in 2002, and I couldn't download any of the internet lesson since the beginning. I called technical support, they told me the internet courses will be available later, since the product is very new at the time I brought it. I waited and waited, the internet courses never available. The CD is too basic, and it doesn't offer much. People should look else where for a better quality product than Learn to Speak English 8.1.

Obsolete product - Do not buy it.
I bought this product for my niece. This is for a beginner
who just start learning english. I can't access the Internet
Lessons category from the CDs because all the files are no
longer existed and can't get help from technical support
either since this is an obsolete product. Technical support
is terrible and such a waste of time - You are on your own
with your problem!

A Word to the Wise
1. This is an obsolete product. ALL of the optional downloads expired 2 YEARS AGO!!! So, you'll have limited support.

2. The on-line help, FAQ and Knowledge base are totally worthless. Don't even waste your time looking for help there.

3. Installation totally locks up a Windows 2000 system. My system was absolutely rock solid and stable until I installed this product. Installation totally locked up the system -- even the mouse didn't move. Be Ware!

4. There are no books or documentation of any kind with this product. If you want any help, you have to go to a web site or use the CDs. If the product kills your system as it did mine, you can't use either. There is no phone number for support.

5. Support is basically non-existant. If you can't figure out how to use the product or if something goes wrong or you get error messages, you are totally on your own to figure it out.

If you're technically astute, you can eventually get the product to work but expect to spend many hours in the process. Once you get it working, it looks like an OK package but it wasn't an easy process here. Again, there is absolutely no where to go if you have a problem.

Well, I bought 3 of these for my nephews in South America. You know what? The kids are eating them up! It's a pretty decent CD Rom set. There's voice recognition technology (you'll need a headset)which lets you talk to the computer using simulated conversations.It's got like 200 lessons and loads of exercises for all levels. There's even a placement test at the beginning. Not bad for 20 bucks...Caveat : Program tends to crash every now and then. ... Read more

Review From an English Teacher (ESL)
English can be a very complicated language to learn and teach. I teach ESL (English as a Second Language) and I have used this program in the classroom to compliment my actual lessons and the results have been surprisingly fantastic. My students loved using this program because it gave them good reinforcement on what they had learned in the classroom and even expanded their learning. One of the best things English Now was able to do was to help students work on their pronunciations of words through a microphone which the computer/software then compared it to a native English speaker's pronunciation. The students were also very fond of the many games and activities available and they too also helped. The effectiveness, capabilities and features of this program make it a great buy for anyone looking to learn ESL.

Really Works
Hello, I am a businessman from Japan who learned English from this product. English Now made me able to master the important language skills of listening, speaking, reading & writing, and vocabulary & grammar. There are many features that teach each of these skills but some of them are being able to hear the words said by a native speaker, conversation practice, literature to read in English, and many practice games. Hi I am a native of Spain and decided to learn English before coming to the United States. At first I started taking a class but found that very hard so I looked for help and found English Now.
