4-0 out of 5 stars A good addition to your arsenal
I like this program. It should not be the only aid used in learning Japanese, though. It DID help my pronounciation a bit. You can hide the translation boxes to see what you do or don't understand while the program plays.

This program does NOT use Japanese syllabry; it uses Romaji instead. When playing the games or quizes you have to spell romaji correctly. I wa never good at the type of romaji they use (ie I prefer to use "o-" rather than "oo"). It has a characture chart, but there are better ways to learn Hiragana and Katakana.

All the dialogs are good, though. They do not teach grammer, or explain verb conjugation. For these reasons, it is best to be studying another way and use this program as a passive review, or practice.

...AGAIN, use his to supplement your studies only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Japanese
This program is so great!!! Not only does it allow you to learn Japanese but you can go at your own pace unlike many other ways to learn a language. My favorite feature is the interactive conversation practices which simulate a life like conversation between you and the computer. The amount of Japanese that is attainable through this is incredible. The practice games are all very fun and enjoyable. Good product and great buy overall!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless. Absolutely worthless.
Save your money.

The interface is god-awful, buggy as hell, and the program clearly was rushed out for production. Little thought has been put into this program.

The games are cheesy, stupid and boring.

However, one cool feature was a section with extremely short video segments with the corresponding Japanese (in romaji) scrolling on the left side. I would pay good money for a program that did just that in more extensive amounts.

Hope this helps prevent people from wasting their $39.99 on this program.

1-0 out of 5 stars Learn Japanese? Don't waste your money!
I was looking for a product that would help me learn some basic Japanese - a few words and phrases. Instead, I got the worst interface imaginable... and I get to see a lot of bad interfaces in my job as Information Architect. I've used a couple of different language CD products as primers to upcoming foreign trips and both were wonderful by comparison. The 'Bonus CD' that comes with this package has a grammar checker for every language EXCEPT Japanese... perhaps that makes sense of the editorial review that mentions "Learn Japanese Now! also adds online features that create an interesting and authentic atmosphere, making learning ITALIAN fast, fun, and highly effective." Italian? Well, it certainly doesn't make learning Japanese the slightest bit fun or effective.

Do yourself a favor, when it comes to "Learn Japanese Now! 9.0" keep your credit card in your wallet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly A waste of money and time
This program is HORRIBLE! If you already know Japanese, then it will be great for you, since it is all written in HUGE Japanese with a small translation guide in the corner. It doesn't accually explain anything, it just gives you some words and says "say these". DON'T BE FOOLED!!! I wish I could give this a negitive 99999999999999999 star rating!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk Now! Cantonese
This program teaches you basic words and phrases in Cantonese. (i.e. no grammar lessons). Some of the phrases are a bit geared towards tourists, such as "Where are the suitcases?" and "Someone's stolen my passport." However, there are many different topics, so you can use it even if you are not a tourist. Some of the topics include: food, countries, colors, telling time, human body parts, and numbers (1 through 20). The games are a great way to learn the words... much better than drills and repetition. I'm trying to learn Cantonese and this software has really helped me build up my vocabulary.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful!
I agree with the other reviews...This software is just wonderful. The chinese characters used in the software are traditional not simplified. (Traditional is used mostly in Hong Kong but simplified is used mostly in canton and mainland china). Even with this it is a good investment. The software is very good for beginners. It gets you talking! The other cantonese learning aids (I had a hard time finding many) I have used start off with whole complicated sentences in cantonese which were much to hard to someone who does not have any base knowledge. This gives you a way to attain that base knowledge. An A+

5-0 out of 5 stars One more thing...
I neglected to mention the only criticism I have of this particular software. There is a feature for printing picture dictionaries. This is a wonderful idea, so one can associate an image with a word...much more helpful in real life unless we're blind.

For European languages, putting words written in a latin-based alphabet works pretty darn well, seeing as we can piece together a pronunciation, etc.

Unfortunately, for Talk Now! Cantonese, instead of using a romanized form of the word under the corresponding picture, Eurotalk uses only the Chinese character...

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to stop using...
Dang. If only all language learning tools were so much fun!!! By far the quickest and easiest way to build up a basic vocabulary. (The program for building an intermediate level is World Talk. It starts where Talk Now! ends and builds from there.) Quickest and easiest because it keeps things interesting. I've been looking for aids to build up my Cantonese vocabulary for a long time...and now I've found a product I'll use no matter what language I'm studying.

Two thumbs and both big toes up! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars [Bad] software
I run Windows 98 on a reasonable system. This program installs ok, but it will not reliably run. It most often gives some vague error message and aborts. The few times I have made it run, it translates J-E or E-J into some kind of jibberish.

I have a small understanding of Japanese, but need a program that would speed up my work. This program is most definately not a good choice!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Logomedia Japanese Translator
Don't waste your money -- despite what it says, this program is NOT compatible with Windows 98, and it doesn't seem to like Windows 2000 much either.

It took three re-installations to even get it to take, and then it proceeded to complain that it couldn't find this or that component, even though they were installed. And the un-installation program is a joke -- all it did was remove three of the four icons and a few registry keys. It left all the files in place, and one start-up component still running.

I'll pass on this and look for another program.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money!!
This software is a fake. It translates English into something which is definitely not Japanese. The J-E translation is also totally screwball...

Don't waste your time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I've just spent my first 15 mins with this CD and I must tell you it is amazing. This is how a language should be taught. The method is absolutely revolutionary. This really is how we must have learned language as children. Try it and I think you'll be very pleased.

3-0 out of 5 stars Below Expectations
mei thori si hindi bol sakta hu (i can speak a bit of hindi) and knowing full gujarati i guess this program is somewhat useful for me because i only got it to expand my hindi vocab (that in itself was a mistake) as my foundations are solid.

it starts off simple enough going through boy/girl/cat/dog/man/airplane etc. basic vocabulary words which for beginners is good. but moving beyond that as far as defining/teaching sent. structure with pronouns, prepositions, etc--there are no thorough/proper explanations. it fails miserably. mere/mera/meri (my) ap ka (you form.), us ka, yeh (he/she/it near speaker), voh (dist.), ke sath (along with), ko (to), hum (we) etc...was rosetta "stoned" while writing this program? for example, it has a picture with a boy and a dog and the sentance will read "larka aur kuta" in hindi script (btw DO NOT EXPECT TO LEARN TO WRITE ANYTHING IN HINDI USING THIS PROGRAM unless you are like good will hunting when it comes to grasping concepts) and you click on that picture among 4. never is a proper explanation of "aur" (which by the way means "and") provided--so your average beltway american could think it meant along with, beside, etc. this is just one example. there are many verb tenses in hindi and they must agree in number/gender. many are irregular. for example, to say "i go" (janna) you would say "mei jata hu" and to say "i am going" you would say "mei ja raha hu" (in other words "raha" is the "ing" way of saying something in hindi. now granted the pictures show a guy jumping or "in action" when having to pick but that's it. lesson 2 doesn't ever explain this semi "advanced" verb conjugation but rather just "goes with the flow." that means your average non-indian learning this will have difficulty figuring out what is going on. also, once you remember certain words (like horse = "godo") then when the time comes to click the picture you might just click the one witht he horse, not understanding verbs, etc. they have other practice exercises w/out pictures but, again, don't expect to learn to write/read. alphabet is not exactly 26 easy to write letters separated by spaces if you get my drift...

in short, what i'm trying to say is that this program will "teach" you phrases (many of which are useless as a beginner (i.e. teaching "girl on a horse" INSTEAD of teaching "what is your name" (ap ka nam kya hai?)) through MEMORY. There exists no cognitive and logical development. no systematic progression of sentance structure. i have not gone through the whole program's 22 lessons but through several. but i stick by my story as far as far as proper teaching and content that is lacking. phir milege (see you later).

5-0 out of 5 stars Realy fast way to learn a language
In my spare time I work on developmental aid projects in India. Although it's pretty easy to get along in English, I wanted to grasp at least a little bit of one of the main languages from India. The Rosetta Stone course Hindi did the trick for me. It's fun, it's easy, it's fast. Without one word of help in an other language, this visual and interactive program whisks you through the basics in no time. My Indian friends loved it. Because of the alphabet being different from ours, there are no writing excercises available. It would help if at least a overview of the Hindi Alphabet and a sound description was added to the course. But still I can't wait for a complete 92-lessons-course to become available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hindi software
Using this software is an excellent way to learn a foreign language. I would recommend this software to somebody who has had some exposure to Hindi before, and somebody who can read Hindi. Or this software would be ideal for somebody who has access to a person who reads and writes in Hindi, this is because many of the lessons use the Hindi script, and thus require some reading recognition. I liked this software, and I wish there were more Hindi lessons. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget about this product!
As the other reviewer says, "Fonetiks is a unique publication in more ways than one..." The curious fact is that the exactly same comment can be found at their own website. If you use a search engine and type in keywords like the name of this product, you can get to their website pretty easily, and you will see how the product looks like. When I bought this product, I was dissapointed so much. If there is a no-star option, I would rather choose it because this software does not help anything. As I, myself, am an EFL(English as a foreign language) speaker, I found this product a good-for-nathing. You can only hear few sample sounds from these ten languages listed above and the sound quality is also baaaad! I am a student of linguistics and I was taking a phonetics class. I thought this CD-ROM might be a helpful tool for my studies, but it turned out to be a waste of money. If you are taking a phonetics class for some languages and if you have thought that this might help you, no! Just forget this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fonetiks Pronunciation Guides with Instant Sound
Fonetiks is a unique publication in more ways than one. It's the world's first CD-ROM where you can simply mouse over text to hear it spoken - quite a big step forward in language learning, making an instant connection between the spoken and written word.

But it's also a new way of looking at languages: each language is divided up into six types of sounds: single vowels, diphthongs, triphthongs, voiced versus voiceless sounds, consonants, and stress/intonation. The result is that seemingly 'hard' languages like Mandarin or Japanese suddenly become quite easy to get to grips with.

Another unique thing about Fonetiks is the fact that it presents seven varieties of English: American, British, Australian, etc. - ESL learners won't find this anywhere else, at least not in this breathtakingly convenient mouseover format. The same goes for Parisian versus Canadian French, and German versus Swiss German.

As if this were not enough, there is also a unique "Spoken Grammar" for ESL learners, plus conversation patterns for English, French and German. More than 40 people comprised the "cast" of authentic native speakers that put this production together. This is a unique, major resource for people who love languages. ... Read more
