Amazon.com Review

Using conversations on QuickTime video combined with sentence-by-sentence and word-by-word translations, this software instantly immerses you in practical situations, such as ordering food or traveling by train--exactly what you need before you head to Tokyo next month, right? Best-suited to students who've already had about one year of Japanese, this CD-ROM applies "authentic language" and "communication gap" exercises--widely used university approaches. In lay speak, this means you will:

  • Watch videos of native Japanese speakers interacting naturally with each other (the acting's not half bad, either)
  • Read printed versions of their dialogs
  • Listen to the dialogs word by word or segment by segment
  • Practice pronouncing dialogs word by word or segment by segment, using the included microphone
  • Apply vocabulary by filling in new words from the dialogs, or in other gamelike activities, such as crossword puzzles
Transparent language successfully uses this model in its other language packages. Its Japanese adaptation is equally successful, with two main differences: Japanese needs better-integrated politeness and gender-specific language practice, and at this level it should print dialogs in kana instead of roomaji. (The separate practice module for the kana is a bit of an afterthought, so pick up a separate kana review, too.)

Overall, this is a unique system that will both entertain and challenge you. Each sentence is given with a full translation, and each word with grammatical details, such as tense, etc. You can slow down videos and recorded speech to hear them better, and you can play back your own pronunciation to compare it with native speakers'. This is painful, we know, but helpful.

Note that you should know at least some Japanese first and be fairly comfortable with concepts like -masu forms and "object particle." Also, the software gives pronunciation feedback with gimmicky graphs that will make sense only if you've studied acoustic phonetics before; nonetheless, the interactive pronunciation and the videos are the most useful features. Caveats: the software works with both Mac OS and Windows, but some extra stuff on the Bonus CD works only with Windows. (This should not at all dissuade Mac users, however.) Also remember that it's rather antisocial to practice conversation only on the computer, so here's a great excuse to sit at the sushi bar. --Erik Macki ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good primer, but you'll need more.
I work for a Japanese company, and I bought this program after a trip to Japan. (I knew I would be going back again, occasionally.) It's slow learning the language with any method. Japanese is quite different than English. But, I was able to get some basic phrases in a short time.

This product probably won't stand on it's own, since the program doesn't directly teach you the grammar. You kind of have to stumble into that in the program, or figure it out on your own. Also, I haven't seen a dictionary or well indexed topics in the program to help you learn specific words quickly... that would have been nice.

The good news is this program does help you get a handle on pronuciation and inflection very quickly. (When I met my Japanese colleagues again later on, they were impressed with my pronunciation - what little I could say.) Click on a word, and it pronounces the word. Click on another icon, it pronounces it slower. Click on yet a different icon, and it'll read the whole sentence. Very cool!

Of course, I'm now looking for more advanced books. I've got some friends at work that help me learn at lunchtime, now. Pretty good deal... I buy them lunch, they help me learn Japanese. ;)

I used this software on a Macintosh G3/350. Hope this helps!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This program has the worst user interface I've ever seen in my life, and plenty of bugs to go with it.

The video conversations are a great idea but they are poorly executed and there are too few of them anyway.

The rest of the program vaguely resembles a reference guide but it's to cumbersome to be of much practical use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful product.
If you speak absolutely no Japanese, this product is not for you. If you speak a little bit of Japanese you would hate this program. This is a horrible way to teach yourself the language and probably wouldn't help beginners at all. DO NOT BUY!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Program - There has to be something better
I bought this CD before my husband and I got stationed in Japan, and thought it would help me to get a little bit of a grasp on the language. It is terrible. I want to be able to learn the language step by step, starting basic and working to intermediate, like you do with any language, but this is impossible. It throws you into the language somewhere in the middle and you have to have a handle on the language before you even begin to work with this program. It advertises that it is great for the beginner, but I think I just wasted my money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for supplimental use only!
If you are a beginning student, this program can be used as a suppliment to other learning tools. This program will not teach you Japanese by itself! The good points are the video/dialog sections and the word record/playback feature (which I use alot to practice pronunciation). A major drawback is the lack of a good lookup tool to find a specific word in context within a sentence. You are also limited to the words used in each lesson for the interactive practice sections. If you are just curious, this is an affordable way to explore the Japanese language, but if you are a serious student you might consider "Power Japanese" (which I think is changing names to "Complete Japanese"). 1-0 out of 5 stars Useless to anyone not in their 3rd or 4th year of Japanese
It has 8 cds, 3 of them are purely audio.

There are no printed instructions, and no disk marked as 'Hey, start here!'

You're basically left to wonder what to do.

There is a program to install a software that's called "Tell Me More". That CD is marked as Beginner, so it seems the place to start.

I'm not sure whose definition of Beginner that is, but you're given a colorful screen which reminds me of books for a 5 year old. Is there something wrong with simple, functional menus that tell you just what you need to click on and just what to expect when you do click on it?

Here is the single worst decision in the program - Where do you start?
One would think that, buying a program to learn Japanese language, you'd start at some kind of page 1 thing where you learn the basic sounds of the language, practice a few samples which are written in a roman alphabet phonetic, next to actual Japanese. Something like 'apple' to learn how A is pronounced, etc., learn a few Kanji characters or something.

No, nothing like that. With no real idea where you're to start, you can try randomly clicking one of the 'lessons'. I did so, and I was presented with a series of one or two sentence Japanese dialogues, no English anywhere near to tell me what it was I was trying to say. I was then supposed to speak these in to a microphone. Great, I may as well be mumbling to the dog, because I have no idea what I'm saying!!

Click on other 'puzzles' and you're given a picture, and next to that three Japanese descriptions. You're supposed to select ct A, B or C, I assume picking the description that matches the picture. And this is the Beginner disk?
What can I expect in the Intermediate disk???
How would the Beginner have even the slightest idea? No English anywhere. Ok.
What do I do now?
Unistall and return to the vendor, that's what.

This is the craziest, most useless set of mismatched disks I've ever seen.
But then again, I've yet to come across any popular education software that was of any value, so it's par for the course. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Don't be intimidated by all those characters--Japanese reallyis easy to learn, and Instant Immersion Japanese makes it fun. Withfour independent discs, it will help students learn, refine, perfect, and delve into Japanese. And though it's meant for beginners, intermediate students who need to brush up on comprehension andspeaking skills can also use Instant Immersion Japanese.

The first CD, Talk Now! Japanese, is where any beginner should start. The program contains very little documentation aside from what's on thebox, so we had some trouble figuring out where to begin. However, theinterface is intuitive enough that you'll be able to get the gist ofthe program after clicking around a bit. The sections are broken upinto areas such as numbers, colors, first phrases, and foods, and therepetitive activities allow you to go as slowly or as quickly as youneed. Each area of study is then broken up into five lessons, includinglistening comprehension and word repetition, and two games of varyingdifficulty to test what you learned. As closure for each area, you canprint out all the words covered in the lesson for reference.

It's a pretty big leap from the first CD to the second, World TalkJapanese. Though it's meant to be a natural progression, we thinkbeginners will have trouble making the move fluidly. This program, though it includes the same familiar lesson-and-game learning system asTalk Now!, is entirely in Japanese, including the lesson instructions,so it's incredibly hard to follow at times. While it forces you to payattention and quickly learn what they're saying, it may be confusing atfirst. But if you're really lost, each game has English textinstructions hidden away on the screen that we unearthed after clickingaround.

The only gripe we have with the first two discs is that no Japanesegrammar is taught, leaving the student with a basic comprehension ofthe language, but no way to know how to construct a simple sentence. With this in mind, the suite might serve a student better as asupplement to a course in grammar and a study of the written language.

The remaining two discs serve as independent utilities that augment thelessons taught in the first two. JquickTrans, in particular, is worththe price of this package alone. It's a comprehensive dictionary, translator, and kanji (Japanese characters) reference that will, through motivated individual learning, help teach new students aboutkanji and Japanese writing. The last program, Voyage in Japan,is a nice, though clunky, introduction to Japanese culture. It featuresshort video clips and beautiful photographs with brief bits of textabout the Japanese people, land, history, and traditions. We found theinterface to be pretty unintuitive, so be patient while navigating theprogram.

At such a low price, you won't find a better deal for an introductionto Japanese. Although the four discs don't necessarily offer a linearor intuitive course to follow, any user will be able to pick out thepieces they're most interested in to get a solid introduction toJapanese. 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting vocab builder, but not a language learner
There are two universal truths of acquiring a second language. First, there is no "quick method." It takes time and work. Second, self-study only gets you so far. Language is about communication, and that requires more than one person.

With this in mind, "Instant Immersion Japanese (4 CD-ROM)" is a fine supplement to Japanese learning. While you will never learn Japanese solely from this product, the CD-ROMs will help you study and practice. It is definitely one of the best of it's type.

The games are great vocab builders, and are a nice break from memorizing lists. The first disk has simple single-word games. You will learn the names of food, clothing, parts of the body and a few simple phrases. Keep in mind, you will not learn how to sting this vocab into sentences. The second disk is a large leap from the first, and most people find it confusing (myself included.) The dictionary is great and very useful, while the Japan tour is a little fluffy. Don't expect to gain any great insights.

I recommend this as a supplement for anyone taking a formal Japanese language course. The price is right, and the games are fun. Gambatte Ne!

2-0 out of 5 stars Put me back in the class room!
When I first bought this program, I was very excited. I had planned to use this as a supplement to another program I planned to buy later, figuring that it would give me the basics. The first CD was really helpful and I was ready to continue to learn with the second CD. Next thing I know I'm basically ready to throw the thing out the window! All the instructions are in Japanese, the words are in Japanese, and I sat there with a blank look. Looks like I'll be ordering the Complete Japanese software sooner than I thought.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just awful
I sure hope I can get my money back for this. I got the "Deluxe" edition from Costco and it comes with no documentation. I tried one of the programs and it was not intuitive (no way to back up) and only covered about 25% of the screen. Yuck!

1-0 out of 5 stars don't try on XP
Although it says it will run on Windows XP, I had big problems. If you have Windows XP, skip this software at least in its 203d version.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another Fruitless Attempt Of Mine To Learn Japanese
If your anything like me you see the price on this product, your excited, many of the reviews make it sound great. I'm sorry to rain on your parade but the truth is this not a very good program. The first CD "talk now! japanese" is a good vocabulary builder, teaches a bunch of sections with little sections inside, for example, there will be the shopping section which teaches some random house hold items. Once you enter this section (or any other section) you have 4 choices- a list of the words, another part where you can record your own voice (very handy for pronunciation), then an easy game, and a hard game. All while I was using the first CD i was VERY happy, I felt like i was finally gonna be able to learn a good amount of japanese...WRONG!
On to the second CD, it wis ALL in japanese, with the exception of english directions. You have to realize you aren't taught any verbs in the first CD. Now I dont know how anybody else's brain works but mine needs directions and pased learning. The CD is set up in sections of games in different areas and I found myself guessing most of the answers and I didn't feel like I learned anything.
On to the third CD called Jquicktrans, didn't understand how it worked, gave up because I had better things to work with. difficult though.
On to the fourth CD, this is just a bonus program as I see it, learn some things about japan's culture, it is interesting, nothing special.
I learned some nice vocabulary, some stuff about japan's culture, some kanji. now I'm off to see if i can find a better method...

I didn't learn anything through this program and I would not suggest anyone buy this. ... Read more

Now you can learn a new language with the award-winning method used by the U.S. State Department to train diplomats. Proven effective by NASA astronauts, Peace Corps volunteers, and millions of students worldwide, the Rosetta Stone Language Library teaches new languages faster and easier than ever before.

We all learn our childhood language by associating new words and phrases with the world around us. The Rosetta Stone method replicates this process by presenting vivid, real-life images to convey the meaning of each new phrase. Instead of translating, memorizing, and studying rules of grammar, you actually learn to think in the new language. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated systematically, leading to everyday proficiency. It's the natural way to learn.

The Rosetta Stone Explorer contains 22 lessons for beginning learners with nearly 900 real-life images and phrases spoken by native speakers. It develops all key language skills--listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing--while its systematic structure teaches vocabulary and grammar naturally, without lists and drills. Includes previews, exercises, and tests for every lesson, with automated tutorials throughout the program. (Ages 6 and older) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Colorful but limited
The pictures are very nice and the software provides a fun way to learn some basic words and phrases. It's a good basic introduction to the language. If you really want to learn how to read Chinese, though, or even understand how the characters work, you'll need a good textbook and possibly a Chinese reading & reference software program like Clavis Sinica.

3-0 out of 5 stars not a happy camper
if you really, really like to learn mandarin, don't waist your money, this program have many beatifull picture, but no have a book to fallow, you my think that you learn to say HOUSE went they mean something out...also chinese explore don't teach you the 4 diferent tone for speak mandarin , better buy any book with tape record in any bookstore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strictly an Explorer
This software is intended to be an explorer of The Rosetta Stone Chinese *Level 1*. Great emphasis should be put on the word EXPLORER as this software should not be mistaken for a complete learning program.

The Explorer contains the first 22 lessons of Level 1 but it does not ship with a text. The biggest thing missing is the text!

I have found the Rosetta Stone teaching method, where pictures are used to convey the meaning of spoken words to be fun. However, without a text to guide you though complicated phrases and grammar the software is not very effective. I have found it difficult to follow beyond lesson 8.

You should not expect to learn much Chinese from the Explorer, you should rather view it as a sample for evaluating the effectiveness of the Rosetta Stone method before spending $...+ on the Level 1 software.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Learn Mandarin Chinese
What a great program!! You can choose Pin Yin, Simplified Characters, or Complex Characters. There is plenty of variety: you can read, write (pin yin), speak, listen, take tests, or use a tutor. You can have the native speakers say a phrase over and over or slow their voices down. The pictures are great and the feedback instantaneous. It is easy to spend hours at a time using this program. I find it helpful to have a pin yin dictionary handy every once in a while to occasionally look up a vocabulary word. I've seen remarkable progress in a very short time. The CD has 22 lessons with over 200 more available from the manufacturer. Great product. Good price.

Amazon.com Product Description

With the 2006 version of AutoCAD LT, Autodesk offers a more flexible and intuitive application designed to make professionals more productive than ever. Key features like more flexible hatching, improved dimensioning, and user-friendly text editing make AutoCAD LT 2006 a worthy upgrade from previous versions. Autodesk has also improved the user interface, enhanced the editing toolkit, and more--again, with the goal of increasing productivity for 2D drafting and detailing.

Dimension with greater ease: New arc length and large radius dimensioning.

Reduce waiting time: Plot jobs and spend more time drafting with background plotting, which allows you to continue working in the drawing editor while AutoCAD LT plots in the background.

Mark up: Easily coordinate projects throughout design review with the markup and redlining functionality of AutoCAD and Autodesk DWF Composer.

View DWF files: The free downloadable Autodesk DWF Viewer enables you to view DWF files that preserve design intent without requiring the original design application.

AutoCAD LT is aimed at design professionals in all industries who require full DWG file format compatibility but do not require 3D capabilities or advanced customization of their software.

Enhanced User Interface
New drafting features in AutoCAD LT 2006 make it easier than ever to get fast results. A new pointer input enables you to launch commands, read prompts and enter values right at the graphics cursor. This keeps your attention focused on your design, rather than on the command line. Meanwhile, the dimension input shows dimension values, such as length and angle, on the object being created or edited. New values can be entered and changed dynamically in the graphics window, which makes interacting with your design dynamic and allows you to explore alternatives "on the fly." There's also a new "Quick Calculator" that makes it easy to perform calculations, units conversion, and derive values from drawing entities all from within AutoCAD LT. This gives you the power of the CAL command without the complex command syntax required in previous versions.

Another user interface improvement, rollover highlighting, helps you avoid time spent selecting wrong objects in a drawing by dynamically highlighting objects in your drawing as you roll over them with the graphics cursor. The new interface also allows for easy customization of menus and toolbars, and automates migration of custom toolbars and menus for future releases. What's more, you can easily customize tool palettes for storing frequently used blocks and hatches. This feature is great for draging and dropping content directly into your drawing. It also makes it easy to quickly find and insert frequently used content, hatches, and solid fills. You can now pre-assign tool properties, as well, such as layer, color, and scale. Properties are automatically applied as you insert content into your drawings.

Text and table handling is dramatically improved in AutoCAD LT 2006, with a focus on intuitive WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) interaction. Insert standard WYSIWYG tables with in-place editing and intuitive keyboard functionality, similar to that of Microsoft Word. In addition to standard grip editing, table editing options are available through the context-sensitive menu, and the properties window. Meanwhile, text is created and edited so it will appear exactly as it does in the drawing. Easily view, size, position, and edit text relative to nearby geometry, while adjusting text properties such as style and font as needed using familiar tools common in other text-editing applications.

Better Dimensioning
Drafting just got a lot easier with AutoCAD LT 2006's new dimensioning tools. First, variable dimension line types allow you to select different dimension and extension line types by using the dimension style or properties dialogs. This lets you to give your dimensions exactly the line type you prefer without spending the time to explode and edit them. Next, new arc-length functionality avoids current time-consuming work-arounds by directly dimensioning the length of an arc. You can also dimension large radii curves quickly and easily. This function creates a jogged radial dimension line to indicate the radius of an arc or a circle that is too large to fit on the drawing. Finally, moving dimension arrows manually is a thing of the past, as new flipping dimension arrows allow you to flip an individual dimension arrow from inside to outside of the dimension line and back.

Simplified Plotting
AutoCAD LT 2006's enhanced plot user interface conveniently places all page setup controls in one location, with the most commonly used controls on the left side. The preview option provides a full preview of how the current plot settings will be applied when you plot the drawing. You can also now enjoy the benefits of background plotting. Whether you publish your designs to DWF files or plot to paper, you can continue working in the drawing editor while AutoCAD LT plots in the background. You'll receive an unobtrusive notification when a plot job is completed, and you can follow the link to view the plot and publish details in the plot and publish details dialog box.

Easy Sharing with DWF
Getting your DWF files out to clients and colleagues is easier than ever with AutoCAD LT 2006. Publish intelligent design data with Autodesk DWF (Design Web Format) file format, and save time by simplifying collaboration with your design team. Because it can create files that can be one-tenth the size of files created in other formats, the DWF format is the fastest, easiest way to communicate design information while ensuring secure and efficient sharing at any stage of the project lifecycle.

Mark up designs and easily coordinate projects during the design review phase by replacing the paper process with Autodesk DWF Composer. Use DWF Composer to mark up drawings with comments, sketches, dimensions, text, and stamps before sending them on their way. You can also view DWF files with the free Autodesk DWF Viewer, which presents intelligent data preserved with accuracy, including drawing scale, coordinates, assorted views, hyperlinks, and more. Print to scale, fit to page, tile, or selectively print a variety of sheets from a DWF sheet set.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUN & EASY WAY TO LEARN CHINESE CHARACTERS
This program definitely deserves a review. I found it so much fun to work with that I stayed up all night, as long as I could keep my eyes open. It feels more like playing the game than investing an effort in learning. It is beautifully structures - it seems just to be made perfect for Western minds, or rather for people who have short time span.

The program teaches grammar, too, in a way that seems more like watching a commercial on TV. It is offered in easily digestable bits, which are immediately followed through practice that is structured just like playing a game.

New characters are introduced throughout the program and through the exercises. Information about every Chinese character is available throughout the program. All you need to do is click on the character you don't know, or that you might have forgotten, to see how it's written (stroke order and count, which are by the way, very colorful), to hear it pronounced, or to check out the pinyin spelling. You never feel stuck.

Some characters are "deconstructed" to provide some possible logic that may help in memorizing the character. There are also few cultural bits and pieces, and even videos with people who have mastered the ability to speak Chinese fluently - for motivation and encouragement. The program is really good throughout in taking the stress out of learning Chinese characters, in making it as easy and enjoyable as possible and in motivating you to keep going. ... Read more
