DK cd-Roms are superior
One of my tasks as a parent is to try to instill the type of curiosity in my children that will never be slaked. History, with its awful text books and unavoidable complexity, is one of the toughest subjects for the young. This cd-Rom offers a wonderful way for a child to begin what could become a life-long love: in it, they are able to travel to 8 periods of history, with worlds that they can explore in a way of their choosing. While there is some reading and narration, most of the presentation here is visual and visceral, i.e. you click on things and do them. I think this is fabulous - a picture is worth 1000 words in this case.

Of course, the worlds presented here are quite simple, one scene for each period if I am not mistaken. My daughter at 6 ran through it and doesn't often go back, though occasionally she does. Nonetheless, it has wonderfully supplemented what she does in school and the reading in history that I attempt with her. Of course, we are helped by the fact that we live in Italy, so she literally can walk to Roman and even Etruscan ruins.

Warmly recommmended. An excellent supplement and a good start.

Fun and entertaining with eduacation thrown in
The History Explorer is a great way to slip a little learning into your child's play time. My 8-yr-old daughter sits and plays this CD for long periods of time, and comes away with new history facts each time. She tracks the Time Fugitive through historical settings and learns about each time period as she gathers clues. Mainly video
This software is primarily composed of video segments. The software is not as interactive as other educational software. The interactive section quizes are limited. However, the math topics are presented well and included enough humor to keep my son interested. He has voluntarily watched all the video's multiple times.

This product is good if you want to learn about math, pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry. I wouldnt recommend it if you just want to learn about one of these because yould be paying too much. Anyway its an excellent source for math education. ... Read more

hilarious!
This is a hilarious geography quiz game from National Geographic. Your hosts are Buzz Bee and Reginald. You can pick wacky characters to play with, such as: Pogo Kitty, Toxic Lump, Turbo Squirrel, Snaze (sp?) (I mean really big nose!) Worm, Buck Toothed Mona Lisa, and other wacky characters. Buzz Bee will pop up in-between the usual geo questions and throws a silly one question game at you. This game makes geography (one of the most boring school subjects, to me at least) fun! And I'm not just saying that. The writers had a ton of fun making this game, especially when writing jokes for Snaze (sp?) Worm. They ran wild with the nose jokes (ran, nose get it?) My kids love it.
I bought this a while back when my two sons (4½ & 3) started to argue and fight more than usual. I made them both sit down together and watch the movies, play the games and read/listen to the stories. After they played the game a few times and listened to the stories, I noticed that the fights/arguements were happening a lot less. Coincidence? Probably not. They liked it a lot. Very challenging, fun, funny, great music and graphics
My soon-to-be 5-year-old has mastered the whereabouts of the continents, countries and oceans in just one week! There are 3 challenging levels of play (and trust me, the 3rd level is plenty challenging for adults!). For a younger child, it is perfect. An older child (say 8 or 9 who has already mastered maps and globes) may hunger for more information than is given, like culture, languages, currency, rivers, etc.

a fun way to learn about the world and people
my 4 year old, a little computor wizzard, is always looking for software programs that he can learn things from. he loves knowing about all the different places around the world and where they are. we used to use maps and tell stories. he was so excited with this new world explorer that he would not stop to eat, then i had a hard time getting him to bed. he kept saying do you know about this place and that place and telling me all about it.i am really glad to find this for him. i like the educational value and the fun. i know he is learning and not just playing a non productive game to pass time.this world explorer deluxe is top on my list for him and i do recommend it highly. mona campbell ...
