Amazon.com Product Description

Based on the popular reality game The Sims, Sim Mania for Kids explores lifelike, open-ended scenarios in a variety of fun and educational settings for kids (recommended for ages eight and up).

The suite includes six popular Sims games: Sim Town (the original city simulator, which lets you build your dream city), Sim Park (where kids create and run their own flowering, buzzing, chirping, roaring park), Sim Safari (in which you can choose from exotic plants and wildlife to create your own African safari park and camp), Sim Tunes (which lets you make your own musical pictures--dancing bugs trigger bursts of light each time they pass over a different colored dot or line), Widget Workshop (in which you discover science and math while inventing and exploring in a hands-on laboratory), and Sim Ant (an electronic ant colony based on real ant biology and behavior where you can "be the ant"). ... My Ratings:

Sim Town - B This game is good. Sim City is better. But, Sim Town is less confusing and may find kids interseted.

Sim Park - A This game is great. It was very fun for me to play. I liked takng the quizzes and getting mail.

Sim Safari - C This game is ok. It sometimes lacks fun because there isn't anything inerseting to do.

Sim Tunes - B This game is better than it sounds. Kids get to experience making songs with many musical insturments. I enjoyed playing this game.

Widget Workshop - D This isn't that good of a game. Well, One thing it's very hard to solve the problems and kids get bored fast. Another thing is that it isn't much fun.

Sim Ant - F Oh pleez don't make me play this again is the #1 response for this game.

Overall - C It's an ok package. It is worth the money, but some games may not be very fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Junk!
If you are a computer expert, enjoy constant crashes and unavailable servers and your child has patience beyond belief then this is the product for you. This product does not work! We spent a week trying to log on to the server which was down, then when we finally got on and registered the games and activites (which are no very good at all) take about 10 minutes to come up before you can play them. If you are hoping that you will be able to let your child play independently with this product, you better think again. You will be the one trying to navigate the instructions and reading the rules. Your child will be able to click every once in a while when you tell them to click on a certain item, but that is about it. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart Choice
So glad to see you finally added this product. I have been hooked on the Kidsedge website for a year now. It is the best all around educational "magazine" I have found. I get great ideas for my third graders -- the ones who need motivation and the GATE kids. We used it today during science and ended up at a virtual museum tour on bugs. I couldn't get the kids to stop for lunch! The articles are interesting, and I am always downloading them for the teacher's room. My husband teaches computers in high school and liked the recent article on cheating in America. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

It's tough to play a game like Britney's Dance Beat and not hearthe pitch, "It's like Dance Dance Revolution, only with all Britney, allthe time!" But despite the Britney Spears corporate Hydra compelling cynicalviewers to look elsewhere, it's nearly impossible not to like this game.

Players watch Tetris-like arrows fall into place and must hit thematching keys in quick combinations. The dancers respond to these instructions, translating them into Britney-inspired dance moves (e.g., the snakelike armmovements featured in her Slave 4 U video). Because it's difficult tosimultaneously watch the arrows and the dancers, the game provides "Perfect!"and "Stylin'!" breaks within the auditions and performances. Hit the rightcombos and you get to sit back and watch Enrique (or any of the other dancers)do his thing.

Capitalizing on Britney's own combination of aw-shucks Southern charm and urbandance grooves, this well-designed game is heartily recommended to the 8- to12-year-old TRL set. Even if you don't fall within those parameters, there'senough kitsch to make the game thoroughly enjoyable. For example, the dancershave camo pants and totally ripped abs! The Saturday Night Fever discofloor stops for no one! Who looks more real, TV "real-life" Britney Spears orcomputerized, shadow-self Britney? (Hard to tell.) It's a game that's aconversation starter, and likely to win over all but the most hardhearted.--Jennifer Hauseman

Pros:

  • Simple, easy-to-learn game design
  • Every key combination is mapped to a unique gesture
  • Britney trivia and other must-see elements for fans
Cons:
  • Dancers and music aren't in sync with background videos
  • Too short--only 6 challenges

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Dancing Game Ever
If you have been to an arcade lately, you may have seen a group of people standing around a dance game called Dance Dance Revolution. Well, if you like Dance Dance Revolution and the pop sensation Britney Spears, this is the perfect game for you. Britney Spears comes to your PC this May with Britney's Dance Beat. The object of the game is to be selected to Britney's new world tour. You must follow the symbols in a circle at the bottom of the screen. As you complete songs, you will earn Britney's videos and concert footage. Two player mode is even better. You can compete against a friend to see who has the hotter dance moves. When you put together a combo of 10 or more "Great" or "Perfect" steps, your dancer destracts your opponent. In addition, the dancer on the screen portrays Britney's real dance moves. In conclusion, this is a great game using "first person technology." If you are a Britney Spears fan (and who isn't?), this is a must have.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing like the PS2 version
I have seen screenshots and videos of the Playstation 2 version and was excited about getting the PC version, which I assumed would be mostly similar. I never buy game systems and didn't have a PS2. I was highly dissapointed when I got the game home. Don't get me wrong...it's not a bad game, it just pales in comparison to the PS2 version. The graphics and video clips are horrible quality, unlike the PS2 version which has superb graphics. And the way you play is different too. The circular thing that looked like a radar is gone and has been replaced by arrow blocks that fall from the top, along the side like tetris blocks. The game is too easy, and lacks a lot of the features the PS2 version has. A major letdown for me was that it didn't support controller input and that the video in the background, the keys, the moves, and the music weren't in sync. You have to completely ignore the beat or it will mess you up. I actually know some Britney dance moves and these aren't it...at least not in the right songs. There are Baby one more time moves in with I'm a slave 4 U. The different rating for moves such as: good, perfect, and miss are nowhere to be found. To top it off, the girl speaking doesn't sound anything like Britney at all.

Lots of fun
I bought this for my daughter and i'm the one sitting here playing it. We are big Britney fans in our house so that alone makes the game fun because you get to listen to Britney songs and watch some videos. Auditioning to be one of Britney's dancers is challenging, but lots of fun. My daughter hasn't gotten to see the game yet because i installed it when she was sleeping and now I'm anxiously waiting for her to get up so she can see it. She's going to love it! I highly recommend this game!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even one for the fans...
PC version reviewed.

Let me start by saying that I am a fan of the Konami 'Bemani' style rhythm games, and enjoyed Bust A Groove and Dancing Stage immensely. However, I was not prepared for the totally boring and poorly produced mess that is Britney's Dance Beat for PC.

The game begins with your choice of dancer, and you can then move on to attempting to audition to become one of Britney's support dancers. Once you have successfully auditioned, it's off on the road with Britney for the performances. If you clear all stages, you get to dance off against Britney herself.

Each audition and each performance consist of groups of arrows scrolling down the left side of the screen. To successfully execute a dance move, you must complete up to three combinations of up to three keys (the arrow keys and space) at the right time, when the keys appear in the 'targeting bracket'. When dancing against Britney, there are no timing errors allowed, your moves must be exact.

Each time you clear a stage, another backstage video of Britney is unlocked in the video vault.

Lastly, there's a freestyling mode, where you are able to perform any of the available dance moves, and indeed choreograph your own dance routine.

Now, the problems with the game. One problem is that the timings of the keypresses weren't always in time with the beat. It often helped to not listen to the music when timing keypresses! The presentation is very sloppy. It doesn't feel like you're dancing at a concert in front of thousands of people in the concert stages. The backgrounds are very simplistic, and don't do a good job to convey a sense that you're actually in any of the exotic locations the game claims to represent.

The worst problem by far is that the game is far too easy, and the game can be finished and everything can be unlocked by an average player in under one hour. The game start out being VERY easy, and doesn't get much harder. It's all too easy to clear every stage in the game without missing a step.

After seeing the PS2 screenshots I was expecting some nice in-game graphics, but not so - they are terribly simplistic for a PC game. The videos are OK, but nothing special. After playing this mess, I'd be interested to see if the PS2 version is any different.

Avoid. Even if you're a fan you'll be disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of learning fun
My son started playing this game when he turned three. He loved it then, and still loves playing it at age four. I should say, however, that I believe the optimum age for this game to be between 2-4 years. Handily, there are different level settings, so children who are more advanced or less advanced in activities can still enjoy the fun. For example, my son does well in mathematics and reading, so the library and the play store are high level activities. On the other hand, hearing sounds and repeating them (the triangle goes 'ting', so you must then hit the triangle) is harder for him, so we use the easiest setting for the music store.

He has spent up to two hours playing in just the present store, picking out presents for friends within the money limit allowed. He loves choosing the wrapping paper and matching bows, as well.

As the game features many different activities (reading, mathematics, sound repetition, vocabulary, shape-sorting), it is a win for parents interested in educating their children in a fun way. I'm planning on purchasing it for my nephew, as well, and if I had more relatives with children, they'd be getting it for Christmas, too.

The main down side would be Joe, as compared to the beloved Steve, but he plays a very minor role, and is only seen when the child is switching between activity centers (library, grocery store, music store, bakery, present store). The other would be the lack of actual reading in the library. As my son can read, it would be more fun on the highest level if he could sort the books according to title, instead of just with the beginning letter. However, he still has a lot of fun with it, and the mathematics in the present store are great.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pass, unless you really love shelves.
This Blue's Clues game looks like it was rushed through development. With the show's old host Steve gone, they now have to quickly replace Blue's old computer games so that the new host, Joe, is in them. Most of the simplistic activities have a recurring theme: taking and putting things off and on shelves. Here's a list of what to expect:

Activity 1: Go to the bakery and pick items off shelves.

Activity 2: Go to the library and put books where they're supposed to go, by matching the book with the letter on the shelf.

Activity 3: Go to the Toy Store and help customers buy presents by picking from a shelf full of items.

Activity 4: Go to the grocery store, and help Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper select groceries by taking food items off of ... you guessed it, shelves.

The only activity that is different, is a mediocre music activity, where you match what Purple Kangaroo does. Eh.

Sounds pretty exciting, doesn't it! Well, not really. The only reason this game will sell like crazy is because it has Blue in it. If it wasn't for that, no one would pay attention to it. The activities are simplistic and rapidly become boring due to the recurring and unimaginitive "shelf" theme. Worse, the program doesn't really explain anything to your child. It just jumps right in and says "Match the letter on the book, to the letter on the shelf." Your child may likely ask, "What's a letter?"

The show is good, but this game isn't. Pass, unless you really love shelves.

1-0 out of 5 stars LALALALALALALALA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
La la land is a place I have been to many times in my life time. They have ponys you can sit on. And they dance! And sing! And poop! And giant slugs slither on you until you get really, really, really, really, really ,really ,really, really, really, really, really, really ,really ,really, really, really, really, sticky. And you can fly with dragons that speak Italian...And warrior bunnies attack with feathers made of soap. And Green Bay Packers fans wear cheese on there heads. Which bring flying monkeys that only eat cheese! And gwakamoli rains from the heavens. And you can grow a beard that climbs all the way around the earth and chokes zombies to death!!!(...) And sticky mummies walk around in circles until they burn holes in the floor!!! I JUST LOVE THIS BLUES CLUES GAME!!! IT'S THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED!!!!!!!!!!!! THE END THE END THE END THE END THE END THE END THE END THE END THE END THE END THE END!

3-0 out of 5 stars It was ok
I played with my almost four year old nephew with this and I found it very hard for him to follow. First of all, was he supposed to know when to click? I could hardly tell when the arrows were slighted changed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
We've had this disc since my son was 3. Other reviewers have expressed the thought that the game is more suitable for toddlers. I don't entirely agree, particularly given that there are three distinct levels for each task.

The Grocery Store - level 1 directs children to put specific items in the basket. Higher levels direct children to items based on their relative position (e.g. the item below, or to the right of, bananas).

The Music Store - I admit that I find this one tiresome. The player repeats a pattern of beats on a variety of instruments. Each level increases the number of beats and instruments used.

The Bakery - Children choose items that are specific shapes. Level 1 uses only the most common shapes. Level 2 introduces lesser known shapes, like the crescent. Level 3 has the child look for objects that combine shapes - the task may be to find an item containing 1 circle, 1 triangle and 2 rectangles, which the child will find arranged as a cookie shaped like a little girl.

The Present Store - Here the child is asked to find one item that cost a specific number of "blue dollars". The number of dollars is displayed on the gift table and each item's price is displayed beneath it. The child places the item on the table and then counts out the appropriate number of dollars. In the higher levels, the child is given an amount, but they must find a combination of 2 or more objects that equal that total (probably the most complex activity in the game).

The Library - ok, I can't defend this one. It is ridiculously easy on any level.

All in all, it's not a bad game. It does move a little slowly and you do have to adjust the difficulty of each activity to the appropriate level for your child, but holds appeal for kids a variety of ages and gives them a chance to play with a favorite character. ... Read more
