Amazon.com Review A kid could get lost in all of this audio, visual, and educational stimulation. There is simply a lot going on here: a quiz to match learning styles with the appropriate buddy; another quiz to set difficulty levels; a collapsible toolbar that changes game levels, reveals progress reports, stores power-ups, and accesses learning buddies; eleven games with activities ranging from pizza-making (fractions!) to news reporting (writing!); plus power-ups to collect, tracks to build and scooters to customize, all leading up to the big payoff--a scooter race to end all scooter races. Fortunately, designers did a good job with the flow of this program, and it is easy to forgo the quizzes and just get on with playing games, collecting rewards, and building the best scooter in the universe. JumpStart Advanced 1st Grade assumes fluency in counting, spelling, and reading. Also, this is not a good first program for a kid who has never used computer software before. Concepts like fractions, decimals, sentence building, punctuation, and science are explored here. There's a place to create printable artwork and compose save-able tunes, but the strongest emphasis is on the three Rs. (Ages 5 to 7) --Anne Erickson Features Reviews (1)
To me, Jumpstart Advanced Grade One *is* advanced. It's got Grade Two cirriculm coming on strong. But so what? The child playing it doesn't know the difference between grade one and two 'ideals' so they play, and the game naturally advances as they do. And that's what's great about these Jumpstart Advanced, they do, in fact, *advance*! Without partental supervision or help, this is a CD for a child who can now read (or at least take a shot at sounding out) 'See spot run' and has a basic grasp of phonics. Having watched my 5 1/2 year old child play it over the last month, I have not noticed *any* phonics in it. But she plays the Reader Rabbit Phonics CDs and the Jumpstart Phonics CD, in addition with this one. If your child has no phonics skills, get a phonics CD ("Reader Rabbit I can Read! with Phonics" is good)I can sit beside them while they play and help them out while i do the laundry. It's astounding how fast they learn if you teach them to sound things out. This particular CD, the Jumpstart Advanced 1st Grade is a very full, rounded CD. It's teaching them fractions (they build pizzas and have a list: one half pepperoni, one quarter green peppers, etc), reading, addition, subtraction, grouping, analyzing, etc. It's entertaining. It assumes. But far better that then them have played it out in 3 weeks or become bored of it because it's too easy. Worth the money. I plan on getting *all* the jumpstart Advanced products. I have the Jumpstart phonics one, and the Jumpstart Advanced preschool which was a huge hit. Jumpstart Advanced (no other previous Jumpstart products *but* the Advanced) has thoughtfully included an assement test your child can take over and over again and which will automatically reset the levels of learning they are at by the score results - you can also take the test then adjust them manually if you like. There's also a report card of sorts that allows you to see which parts of the game they are playing and how many right answers they score. I never mention what they are scoring to them, but it is interesting to see what they do and what they like and what needs work. Great product. Well worth the pennies. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review In the Logs game, children help a gopher cross the river and make his way towardthe correct answer to a math problem--much like the old game Frogger butwith an educational twist. Players also encounter a Save the Universe game(science), a vault that must be unlocked (spelling and vowels), and even a basicmusic-notation game--well over 20 interactive games in all, plus printableactivities. Why should the fun--and learning--stop when the computer shutsdown? The first of two CD-ROMs is part audio CD, containing 10 sing-and-learn songsthat can be used in any CD player. As parents, we love this feature; it's greatto be able to take the music on the road to reinforce the ideas and factschildren are learning when they play the game. JumpStart 2nd Grade also features built-in Internet hooks for exchangingmail with other JumpStart users and downloading more adventures. And asan added bonus, the program comes with a 30-minute animated VHS story, "Why Didthe Bus Stop?" While its animation is not the most elaborate, the tape featurescharacters from the game and helps children learn about counting, telling time, and the five senses. The JumpStart series is popular, and for good reason: the folks atKnowledge Adventure invest a great deal of time and money into their products, and it shows in this worthy member of the series. Amazon.com Review In JumpStart 1st Grade, kids get to pal around with Frankie, ahyper yet sincere pooch who would probably be the most popular boy inthe class. Frankie is excited to go on a treasure hunt but first mustgather clues by helping out inside the school. Six activities withinthe schoolhouse earn clues: Cooking up Spelling Soup, cooking in theMeasurement Kitchen, counting funds in Money Madness, engaging in PogoStick Math, reading from the Bookshelf Bonanza, or playing a teacher'sBean Bag Science game. There's also a music room and an art room. Inour tests, the organ with point-and-click keys provided a lot of free-formfun. It also provided a welcome break when the slightly too-longeducational games begin to feel, well, educational. JumpStart Around the World lets kids travel to far-flung placeslike Brazil and China aboard anything from a train (landmasspermitting) to a blimp (if you have enough money to buy passage). Kidsmust purchase their passage, which is a good lesson in pocketbookeconomics. Each of the four modes of transportation involves a game, and once in a country, kids can chose scrapbook souvenirs ranging frompostcards to fun facts to brief audio language lessons. We thought thebudget and the language lessons were engaging and educational tools. But the brief skimming over each of the 12 destinations got was thecyber equivalent of being trapped on a tour bus. (Ages 5 to 7) --AnneErickson Reviews (10)
The children are introduced to basic skills, in this case addition, subtraction, fractions, measuring, quantities, telling time, parts of speech, phonics, reading comprehension, basic science, music, art, synonyms and antonyms, counting money. Each skill is learnt with a game, Spelling Soup, Vending Machine, Lost and Found, and Bean Bag Science to name a few of the many activities. Each game is well constructed, has three levels, and the ability to track progress should this be desired. Typically each Jump Start has a meta-game, in this case, clues for a treasure hunt. The treasure hunt is slick and adds to the enjoyment. Though we have spent many hours on first grade reading and first grad math, we spent more time on first grade than on both these other activities together. Lots of fun, lots of learning.

Amazon.com Review The CD-ROM revolves around a handful of activities, ranging from freeformpainting to virtual puppet making to a matchmaking game that introduceshistorical pieces of classic art. At any point in the game, the animation islively and helpful, and accompanied by a friendly soundtrack. Don't think thatthis isn't enough to do--there is plenty of material here for any little artistto explore. Our favorite feature of the program is the variety of artwork presented in thematchmaking game. Broken down into five categories, there are examples rangingfrom Seurat's Sunday in the Park to Tanner's The Banjo Lesson, andeven Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Can. The purpose here is teach kidsthat art comes in a variety of styles, and that not all art looks like MonaLisa. Not only is each piece pictured, but there is a series of buttons onthe side that describes the style of painting, how it was done, and otherinteresting details. Also, the name of each painting and the artist ispronounced audibly by the narrator, teaching children the proper pronunciationof such names as Matisse and Seurat. This is a fun and educational CD-ROM, with plenty of depth to keep theblossoming artist involved and interested. --Mike Caputo Reviews (8)
It teaches foreign language. One of the movies is about a pinata, and it teaches the Spanish words for big and small. It is extremely enjoyable for preschoolers (age 4), yet it is complex enough that a young grade school child would not think it was too easy or too young for them.

The "Artist" game is by far our dauther's favorite. It has a lot of different activities, including making your own movie. The "teaching" component mostly consists of very basic instructions about lines and shapes. The "A,B,C" disc has a few games related to the alphabet that introduces the child to the letters. It also has some songs that aren't really very interactive. The "1,2,3" disc is, well, to put it mildly, dumb. There are only 3 different games -- matching numbers (which is sadly the most interesting game), matching quantities (gets kinda tedious after a while), the last one involves maneuvering a dog around to find objects in a sequence (unfortunately, the dog doesn't always go where you tell him). Overall, don't buy these games because you think they will make your kid smart. Just buy them for fun.
These games are suitable to begin with a 4 or 4 1/2 year old. (They are a little advanced for my 3 1/2 year old, but she can muddle through as long as Mom or Dad are nearby to help her out of a jam.) One unfortunate component of this software is that there is no way to turn off the on-screen instructions (in the form of animated characters). After a while, it gets kind of annoying, but our daughter doesn't seem bothered by it -- yet. The quality of the animation is so-so. The lip sync is chronically off, but I've seen worse on kids' software. It will play on Windows NT without any problem, as well as on Macs (but only in Classic mode). My main criticism of this kind of product in general is more philosophical, than practical. In my opinion, it's important to look on "edutainment" software as a fun supplement to bookwork and parental interaction, not as a substitute for them. My husband and I work with our daughter every night on her letters, numbers, drawing (fine motor skills) and aural skills (reading novels aloud) for at least 30 minutes. If we were relying on edutainment software for her education in place of our one-on-one efforts (as well as restricting her television intake), then all she would be learning is how to be desensitized by annoying music and flashing lights. As long as it's viewed as "fun" and not real education, then this software serves its purpose -- light-hearted reinforcement of already mastered concepts. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review JumpStart Toddlers sneaks the learning in everywhere. While you're counting in the Numbers Pond, sweeping the feather cursor over a lily pad makes a letter of the alphabet pop out, and DeeDee cheerfully interrupts her counting to utter "A!"(or whatever the letter is). Letters also appear like subliminal advertising behind the Musical Waterfall. Music is everywhere on this CD-ROM as well; each activity has a corresponding song, belted out in DeeDee Duckling's Broadway best. We occasionally find JumpStart's characters a bit cloying, but whoever designed DeeDee gave her some of the very same qualities that make toddlers so endearing. DeeDee fidgets, rubs her nose gleefully, and chews on the ends of her bonnet ribbons. The Learning Scrapbook that comes packaged with this CD-ROM is simply a series of printable templates that parents can use to build a baby scrapbook in that cutesy JumpStart graphic style. (Ages 18 months to 3 years) --Anne Erickson Reviews (27)
However, there are some things that I was not pleased with. First, this product is recommended for children 18 months-3 years. It would probably be more suited for children 2 1/2 to 4 simply because it requires basic knowledge of how to use a mouse and the program does NOT teach this skill. Also, the concepts it teaches (letters, numbers, shapes, colors, music, animals, memory skills, etc.) are more geared toward the preschool crowd. Second, the layout is "busy" and it is hard to see all of the different entrance areas (even for me an adult). Finally, another minor complaint (it is very minor) is that the duck's voice can get annoying after 15 minutes or so for me, but my son enjoys it so this is tolerable. Overall, I highly recommend this software, however, for children over the age of two.
My advice is to buy it at 18 months. Play the 'find the animal' game once every 3 weeks. When your child is able to understand how the mouse works, they're ready to play more often and try the other games on this software. Then get the preschool versions of Jumpstart and/or Reader Rabbit ready for the day they get bored with the toddler games.

One of the questions it asked in level one (the easiest) is who is (1548) the Venitian artist of the same town? So, we had to go through the "museum" of baroque art, look at every picture, read every description, and still didn't fine the answer! I took art history in college, not in the 5th grade! Now I can't even return the ...junk!
To solve the Art History crossword puzzle you are supposed to go to the gallery and do research. But the gallery is so hard to use that my family usually resorts to randomly guessing letters in the puzzle rather than try it. As an educated adult, I don't even know more than one of four clues in the puzzles without research or guessing. If the other subjects were as unreasonable as Art History, I would have given an even lower rating. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review Dr. X is about to destroy Hooverville's power plants, unless a fifth grade sleuth named Jo Hammet can stop him. Jo, and players, begin their odyssey in a museum: a distraught father and a chatty rat clue Jo in that all is not well in Hooverville, and before you can say "Bauhaus," a true sleuthing adventure begins. Players must explore the museum's art, geography, and cultural exhibits, and use what is learned during that exploration to answer a fairly challenging crossword puzzle (we guarantee parents wouldn't be able to churn through it--unless they majored in art history). Completion of that, in turn, unlocks further mystery-solving/town-saving adventure. Moving through the rest of the game involves breaking codes, solving complex math problems, understanding word relationships, and dozens of other advanced skills that make up today's fifth grade curriculums. This game is no cream puff--we found the easiest of the three levels challenging. Also, this program adheres to the "throw 'em in and see what happens" philosophy of gameplay. Just figuring out what Jo must do becomes a lesson in problem solving and logic. Now, there's a second CD-ROM in this set that feels like it was created seven years ago by a bunch of X Games fans with no kids of their own. It involves a place called Adventure World, where players engage in "awesome" sports like in-line skating, snowboarding, rock climbing, and mountain biking with the help of a very nondiverse group of teammates with names like Jess and Zack. The games are all standard-issue racing fare. They might be a good diversion from the academic rigors of saving Hooverville, but most fifth graders we know roll their eyes at overuse of words like "excellent" and "rockin'". The strength of the first CD outweighs the silliness of the second one. Buy this set and your child will learn that using their brain to save the town is infinitely more fun than using their board to shred the slopes. (Ages 9 to 11) --Anne Erickson Reviews (2)

Amazon.com Review This program uses JumpStart's new All-Star system, which matches a particular character to your child's learning style: reader, athlete, musician, team leader, artist, scientist, or math whiz. Once a character is selected, requests for help receive a tailor-made reply. For example, the musician will help kids with reading comprehension by having them imagine the sounds the story makes. These helpers can be selected on the fly--if the artist's help leaves your kid in the dark, she or he can consult with the math whiz for a different perspective on the same problem. Some of the seven multilevel games tackle a variety of subjects--kids may be asked to form contractions or do complex subtraction to navigate a river in the Amazon basin. This variety breathes some life into the otherwise standard-issue activities--game blandness is the weakest point of this program. Strengths include opportunities for kids to learn about the flora, fauna. and geography of the various continents with point-and-click exploration, and a final gadget-assembly task that requires logic, experimentation, and persistence to complete. This final challenge (fans of "The Incredible Machine" will recognize it) may even teach parents a thing or two. Just like other JumpStart offerings, this program has progress reports, so parents and teachers can spy on their junior spy's efforts. (Ages 6 to 8) --Anne Erickson Features
