The vocabulary sections are divided up into 8 sections: first words, colors, food, numbers, shopping, countries, time, body. The ninth section is for phrases, and one advantage is that they are pronounced individually for you, which you can do for the individual words, too. There are two categories of games, easy and hard, and the program tracks your progress. If you like to collect lots of phrase books with basic vocabulary, this might be fine for you, as you can at least learn some words and phrases that might be useful, but for me the major shortcoming is there is nothing on the grammar. I would rather invest the money in the 2-CD version of the half dozen languages I'm interested in, and then pay the extra for the 5 and 8 CD advanced Instant Immersion software when I'm ready to progress to the next stage of learning. Still, for a reasonable price you get 33 languages, including all the main European ones plus things like Swahili, Korean, Finnish, Hindi, Tibetan, Vietnamese, and so on. So if you like to play around with exotic languages this might be the set for you, but you'll need to supplement it with a real language learning course if you're serious about really going anywhere with your studies. I need to mention one drawback to the CD's, however. I have reasonably fast, 16x read and 48x write speed CD, and the program still runs fairly slowly, although I have a half gig of RAM and a 2.6 GHz system. It's mostly noticeable when using the pronunciation capability, but it spends a lot of time just seeking when you're jumping between sections. It's tolerable on my CD player, but if you have an older, slower one, be advised it's going to be slow. One solution would be to get Tenebril software's Virtual Drive Manager program which will copy it to your hard disk so you can run it from there. I've tested it on about a dozen programs and it works on most of them. So it's not a sure thing but the program isn't that expensive and it does work for many things. Tenebril can be found on the web, where I bought it. I don't know if their software is carried by most computer stores or not. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review JumpStart Spanish is easy to install, and it installs Apple QuickTime for the animation features of the program. As JumpStart Spanish can also be used for learning English, learners choose the language they want to learn and the language in which they want their lessons conducted. Once finished, JumpStart Spanish starts itself and students are introduced to the spunky animated rabbit who serves as guide through the lessons. The main page of this program is a "clubhouse" that includes doorways into the fun, colorful, and musical lessons contained in the program. Kids can click on different rooms in a dollhouse, for example, and then learn the words for all the articles inside. Children can also click on the television and watch different conversational videotapes that teach them how to say "What time is it?" and other useful phrases. JumpStart Spanish will teach this vocabulary and these phrases in both English and Spanish, helping children recognize words they already know and what they sound like in this new language. Children can learn at their own pace and, when ready, increase the difficulty level of the lessons. JumpStart Spanish uses music, friendly cartoon characters, and familiar items and situations to relate to small children and teach them a new language. Moreover, if you're not happy with JumpStart Spanish, Knowledge Adventure offers a 90-day 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. So, if you're looking to turn your child on to foreign language and make it fun and alive, JumpStart Spanish is an excellent choice. --Kendra Hayden Reviews (27)

The 3 levels offer a nice change for children that are getting bored with the game. Some puzzles she plays at level 1 where some puzzles she plays at level 3. The game is VERY educational and fun and it follows the same format as the cartoon does. She'll turn 3 soon and she still loves it. I'd also recommend Dora's Backpack Adventure (they make a trip to the library), Little People Discovery Airport, Winnie the Pooh (where Pooh gathers all the friends for Eyores birthday party) and Mickey Mouse (where Mickey and Minnie stop off at Goofy's gas station / Daisey's diner).
This game is saved only by the appearance of Dora. I really feel the two star rating is generous. My daughter is Dora crazy, and even she shows little to no interest in this game (and she loves edutainment computer games). The program is not well executed, and there is little asttention to detail. One my daughter noticed was that at the begining of the game Dora collects 5 books to return to the liebrary. When she returns the books at the end of the journey, the colors of the books which come out of the backpack don't match the ones put in, prompting my daughter to ask "what happened to the books we put in Dora's backpack...
She's crying as I type this. "I don't like this game!"

Amazon.com Review We have only one caveat before we move on: the lower end of the manufacturer'ssuggested age range for this program is 3 years, and we think maneuvering aroundthis program might be difficult for someone this age unless he or she hasmastered mouse use and has a grasp of how onscreen exploration works. Of course,if parents are willing to run the program for their younger child, computercompetence isn't a concern. With a world fair theme and pavilions devoted to French, Spanish, Japanese, andEnglish, this Mac and Windows program teaches conversational words and phrasesin a nonimmersion style. Each pavilion houses one character that speaks Englishand acts as an interpreter, and another one that exclusively speaks the languageof that pavilion. The English pavilion is an exception: in this one, Frankie andRoxie both only speak American English, which leads us to believe this programwasn't designed with non-English speaking kids in mind. Once they've chosen a language to explore, kids will find nine activities insideeach pavilion: a phone teaches numbers, kitchen exploration teaches food andhousehold item names, a coloring activity teaches color words, a puppet showteaches clothing items, and folk songs, art, clocks, outdoor exploration, andfolk tales round out the language-learning mix. This program contains no lettersor characters; your child will learn by listening only. Some of the activitieshave three levels of difficulty--upping a level adds more items to an activity.A challenge mode is also provided, which eliminates English hints and visualprompts, unless you're in Frankie and Roxie's insular pavilion, where theEnglish flows freely no matter what the setting. JumpStart Languages avoids being one big boring vocabulary list by givinga lot of attention to culture as well as language. Exploration will eventuallyyield artwork by Degas and Remington, instructions on how to make a Japaneseuchiwa (fan), and printable recipes for everything from quiche toguacamole. That puzzling English pavilion probably exists so kids can compareand contrast a familiar culture to unfamiliar ones. Another plus is a decentreward system: successful completion of enough activities enables the player towatch one of a couple dozen video clips of the various countries being studied, which beats a printable certificate all to heck. This program is a bright, celebratory way to introduce young English-speakingkids to a handful of languages and cultures other than their own. But it won'tgive your American toddler a mastery of French unless you're prepared to put insome hours, and possibly hire a French-speaking nanny. (Ages 3 to 6) --AnneErickson Reviews (1)
This program doesn't teach grammar, only vocabulary and culture. Your child doesn't need to be able to read, as all the games use pictures and instructions are given orally. Some of the games require written number recognition (1-10). And your child should already know how to use a mouse and understand the basics of computer games, such as the "back button". Overall, I highly recommend this game! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review The 24-pagestory can be read aloud with no computer skills needed beyondclicking on the arrow at the bottom of the page and at the start of thestory. (Parents or older children can choose whether the story will be readin Spanish or English.) For children with slightly more advanced mouseskills, every scene has multiple points that can be clicked on for hilariousthings to happen--you never know what you might find lurking in the trashcan! With the graphics so true to the original books' satisfying amount ofvocabulary-related activities, this award-winning storybook is bound to be abig hit with any Arthur fan. --Jill Lightner Reviews (3)
Arthur gets stuck with a hard teacher. The teacher starts out tough on the students, assigning homework right away. Arthur isn't very confident in himself and isn't used to the work and extra effort that he has to give to 3rd grade. With all of his hard work he actually gets awarded with something even better...and by reading this book you'll be sure to find out! Arthur is my favorite character in this particular Arthur book. He isn't very confident in himself, but we all relate to that. And in the end we sometimes get surprised by unexpected turns.
