3-0 out of 5 stars A good program, but could be better
I've been a Lego fan for as long as I can remember, but no matter how many Legos I had it was never enough to satisfy all my creative urges, so the idea of a computer program with unlimited Legos got me very excited. And it's almost as good as I hoped.

I've had quite a few issues with it, though. The controls aren't the best, but I got used to them. The biggest problem I have is the same one I had with my real Legos--my imagination is too big for the game to handle! The "play area" is large enough to satisfy me (although the ceiling could be higher), but once I had built a hotel, and a restaurant, and a video store, and was working on a bike shop, the game crashed! If I wanted to build anything with major detail, the game would crash after a while because there were too many pieces involved. So as long as you can handle only building one thing at a time it'll be doable, but don't try any serious city-building.

4-0 out of 5 stars Time and patience yield fun
I received Lego Creator as a gift. The program at first was overwhelming, but after using the tutorial things became much clearer.

The use of the program becomes tedious, the camera is difficult to master at first but you can soon become accustomed to how it works. While you can't do everything in this program that you can do in reality, there's a lot more that you can do to expand yoru creativity and enjoyment with this program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GET IT.
This game is the best Lego game I have played yet (and I've played a lot of them), and, in my opinion, one of the best PC games ever. If you're wondering which Lego racing game to get, buy this one. It's better than Lego Racers 2. When I received this game, I could never come away from the computer. That is, until I got sick from it. One great thing about it is the wonderful graphics. They set this game apart from even LR2!

Your big mission is this: to outrace Rocket Racer (the fastest racer in the galaxy) and Veronica Voltage (RR's friend who owns a record-breaking car). This is easier said than done.

Starting out, you have 3 choices: build a new racer (and his car), play in a 'Time Trial' (which I will talk about later), or try out one of the first four races (in 'Single Race' mode). In each one, you will have 6 racers to deal with. Once you think you're ready, you can go through all four of those races in a 'Circuit Race'. At the end of a given race, you receive a certain amount of points, depending on what place you got. At the end of the Circuit Race each racer's points are added up. If you are in the top three, you unlock the next four races. If you get 1st in the Circuit Race, you unlock a car set. It gives you more pieces to build with while making a racer.

There are four sets of four races, plus one big race, the showdown. It adds up to 17 great racetracks in all. And, unlike Lego Racers 2, each race is very different. You will go through tropical beaches, medieval castles, evil palaces, weird planets, and pirate territory. Also, each race has a shortcut hidden in a certain place on the track.

To make racing even more exciting, LEGO has laid power-ups on the track for you to pick up. They'll give you the ability to: shoot missiles, grappling hooks, and laser beams at your opponents; lay traps for them with explosives, oil, and 'mind traps'; protect yourself with four levels of laser shielding; or catch up with single, double, and triple turbo jets as well as a time warp (the best power-up of all).

This game also has a great multiplayer mode. Race against a family member or a friend and it'll split the screen in half. But this mode is only available when you own a keyboard and a game controller, joystick, or steering wheel.

Once you've won each of the Circuit Races and beaten Rocket Racer himself, there is still Veronica Voltage to beat. You might think, 'I've beaten RR, it couldn't be too hard to beat VV.' But you're wrong. You need to beat her on every track except for the one in Rocket Racer's world. No matter how much you practice, you can never seem to win. Here's an important tip: study exactly how she (VV) races on each track and copy her. One of those days you'll cross the finish line before she does.

After that, you've won. You'll probably feel like throwing a party with all your friends! This game is incredible. It's well worth the money. GET IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lego Racers Is A Great Game
Steering wheel recommended for maximum fun. Any wheel will do. At first it seems hard, but with just a little practice, you'll be challengine the best the game has to offer. Some circuits are extreemly difficult to defeat, but none are impossible. What a ride!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great game for a PC
This is a great game. It has four different racing modes, Circuit Race, Single Race, Versus Race(and that would make one of the few PC games that has multiplayer), and Time Trial.
This game also gives you the ability to create your own cars by clicking on the Build button in the main menu. Every time you get First in a Circuit Race you get the Champion's Car Set, and that lets you use all the pieces from his car to make your own.
After you have beaten every track, you try and beat Vernica Voltage in the time trial. All along the way you can pickup power ups to help you, from giving you a boost to giving you a weapon. This is just an overall good Game. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Strap on your seat belt and get ready to go, with Caterpillar Construction Zone CD-ROM with Cat Controller. In other games, you control a machine from your keyboard, but this software is bundled with a controller--and that makes all the difference. Turn the key, honk your horn, and begin lifting.

This software is extremely easy to use, with friendly graphics and a simple setup process. But if you're an amateur Cat driver, you'll need plenty of practice getting used to driving in a straight line. Beginners may want to try a round with the mouse as your controller, just to get into the swing of things.

When starting the game, you can choose to try your job as either a pro or a rookie. You can fight forest fires, clean up a demolition site, plow some fields, or help repair a burst pipe. Whatever you choose, be prepared for monotonous--but somehow addictive--actions that result in certificates of completion or upgrades in your vehicle. --Madeleine Miller ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love this
Two boys (8 & 6) and a girl (5) love this computer game! If I let them, they'd spend hours digging in cyber dirt!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up!!!
My four year old loves this game. I have to peel him away from my computer.

4-0 out of 5 stars matchbox cd and controller
My 9 yr old son received the Matchbox CD & controller for Xmas and after reading the reviews I had my doubts. However this is a great game for the $$. I do believe that it may after time get a little repetative but overall he's having fun with it and that's all that counts..

1-0 out of 5 stars A disaster!
After spending hours with Mattel tech support people to try to get the game to work, and exchanging the software once, Mattel finally gave up and offered me my money back. We have a relatively new and fast computer, and this game would simply not run, and would cause the computer to crash. Avoid it like the plague.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...we loved it!
... My 5 year old got the hang of the controls quite easily and with some work so did our 3 year old. Maybe it depends on the interest of the kids. Our kids are totally into tractors and any type of machinery and loved to have the opportunity to be in the drivers seat. Not only the kids but adults thought this game was fun. If you have a budding farmer or heavy machinery operator on your hands I would recommend this toy. But remember it is a TOY and for kids so it may not be as sophisticated as some may wish. ... Alex Builds His Farm 1.0 is a game designed for young children to entertain and teach them simultaneously. Children control Alex themselves, using the keyboard: he can run and walk and he's always doing silly things. Children start by constructing all the buildings around the farm themselves. They help Alex's family members out with their chores, learn to milk the cow with Alex's grandfather, drive the tractor with his father, make cookies with his mother, and more.

When all the work is done, players get to head to the fishing hole, play with toys, and learn about animals, plants, and life on a farm. When they've learned everything there is to know about life on the farm, children earn a farmer's certificate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Things Worth Waiting For...
While I understand the frustrations of one of the reviewers below, I must give this game the highest rating, because my 4-year old daughter loves it so. It fits her needs to a T. A game may not always be a do-all-understand-all-immediately experience.
Alex Builds His Farm takes some patience to play and to finish all its activities, but the end result, it seems to me, is well worth the wait. First off, let me say that you'll need high-end performance capability to make this game worth the money. If you
don't have a good 3-D graphics card, a lot of RAM, and at least Direct X 8.0, you won't be able to make the game run. My Pentium speed is 500. If you have all that, this game is nothing less than breathtaking to look at! Alex can make a circle-route trip to explore his farm. Besides the farm house, there is a barn, a garden, a hen house, a stable, a cornfield maze, an apple tree, and a lake. A toddler of 3 or 4 (who has mastered the keyboard controls) can take great delight in exploring along with Alex. There are tasks to complete, like putting together the farm buildings, or fetching something Grandma needs in the kitchen. There are also multi-level games to play, like racing Alex's pony
versus his dog, fishing, feeding the cows, finding the crows who are trying to eat all the corn, or saving the hens from a wolf.
Alex also helps his dad to seed, raise, and harvest vegetables in
the garden. The food later appears (in cooked form) in the kitchen, so kids come to understand just how a farm really works.
Alex is also playful and a bit mischievous, which toddlers can relate to. It's true the instructions for games can't be stopped.
I use them to reinforce my daughter's listening skills. But I was
able to pause and/or stop the activities any other time I wanted to, by using the escape key. One other helpful aspect of this game is that anything your child can help Alex "do" is hinted at,
as the items are highlighted in blue. Some items only work in combination with other items, so your child has to use thinking skills to put one-and-one together. My advice to parents who are
cautious about whether your child is ready for this game is: give it a shot! If you don't underestimate what your kid can accomplish with a little sticktoitiveness, you'll likely be pleased with the
results you can achieve with this game. For my little one, Alex's
farm is an absolute joy, like a trip to another world, and she can't wait to enter this world each day. My joy, of course, was seeing her build the farm and learn how to do everything there is
to do there, all by herself!

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating for kids of all ages!
If you value your sanity avoid this program. The lengthly introductions that begin each time you start up the game cannot be stopped. I was twenty minutes into the "game" before any real action occurred, causing one of the four children present to comment, "There's too much talking!". The four kids present (ages 3 to 8)were bored and frustrated as we tried to actually fulfill the promise of building the farm. I finally illegally shut down my computer as it was impossible to escape any other way. As an avid Playmobil toy buyer I was very disappointed to see the quality of this game. The graphics are initially exciting but the structure of the game is so poor I couldn't recommend it for that reason alone. This game is like a one lane highway that doesn't allow for passing and when you finally exit and hope to travel somewhere else you find that you're right back where you started!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alex is intense!
My 6 year old cannot turn this game off. The graphics draw us in; positioning the player as she moves about, as if there were a camera on her back, dazzling you with colors, and paying perfect detail to the Playmobil animals and people which feel so familiar! Great for your Playmobil fan to be "in the scene". Lots of challenge if you want to change levels as you go.

5-0 out of 5 stars great kids software
Both my boys age 4 and 7 loved this game! They have both spent hours playing with Alex on his farm. They have milked cows, drove tractors, swam in the farm pond and raced the dog on the pony just to name a few things. Excellent graphics and easy to use for the kids. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Forget your dad's old electric train set, Lionel TrainTown is here. You'll have all the fun of workin' on the railroad without taking up the whole living room floor.

Going to work in TrainTown means learning to fuel and drive locomotives, switch tracks, couple freight cars, and even clear a line of wandering reindeer with the click of the mouse. To start, players learn to operate the trains quickly and efficiently via a set of narrated tutorials. Apprentice engineers then can click on specific job assignments, like taking a load of hamburgers to hungry factory workers or sorting cars in the freight yard. As you become more adept at manipulating the trains, the jobs get wilder. You may end up delivering materials to build a replica of the Eiffel Tower in the midst of the Arctic. Each job is timed, so you can repeat the task to improve your record or challenge others to beat it.

TrainTown's striking 3-D graphics and realistic sound effects make this CD-ROM a pleasure to play, although the maps that are needed to complete many jobs are a bit hard to read. Children under 8 may not have the patience to complete even the easiest job assignments but will still enjoy the fun of creating their own track layouts and racing the trains through tunnels and over bridges.

With over 70 jobs at varying levels of difficulty, TrainTown presents challenges for all ages and is one product that will last any train-loving family a long, long time. (Ages 6 and older) --Sharon Griggins ... Read more
