The girls will sit and play this alone or together for hours. A must-have for girls who love dress up, make up and the likes.
My four daughters (ages 4, 6, 8, and almost 11) have been seeing this game advertised on TV, and all four of them wanted it so bad. I caved in and purchased the game for $30.00 at a store in town, even though we usually never spend that much on a PC game. We took it home, installed it, and all four girls played it, but really didn't like it much. It's just not that much fun. On the TV adds and on the box it sounds like there are a lot more outfits, jewelry, and hairstyles to choose from than there are in reality. The hairstyles especially disappointed us. You can either choose to style the hair in an "updo" or leave it down. We expected to be able to have choices like braids or pony tails, but there is nothing like that, the only hairstyle choices are "updo" styles. Most of the hairstyles looked fake and weird to me, my girls said they looked stupid. If you choose to leave the hair down you do get to decide how long the hair is, and whether to leave it strait or make it curly, but the curly hair looked as weird as the hairstyles. The accessory choices for the hair were mostly dorky looking, especially the butterflies and flowers. There were also not a lot of hair accessories to choose from, they just had a few things to choose from. I think the hair styling part is what my girls looked forward to the most so they were disappointed. I also have a problem with a lot of the clothing choices, a whole lot of midriff shirts and short skirts. The make up and nails part was alright, but nothing great. The plus of the game is that it is easy for the kids to play so younger girls will be able to play with little to no help. (My 4 year old was fine with it, no problems at all.) However, the clothing choices and event choices are more geared to kids maybe 8 and up. My 4 and 6 year old girls didn't like as many of the clothing styles as the 8 and 10 year old did. If you are looking for a game that an older girl would like that is easy to play, this fits that bill. It would be a good game for girls who are older but haven't yet had much computer experience yet. (They learn quick though!) All in all the game is not bad, but I do regret paying what we did for it. If I had it to do over again I would probably wait until the game was older and therefore not so expensive. If your kids want it, maybe you should see if they like the idea of the What's Her Face PC game instead. We have had that game for about a year, and it still gets played with. It's along the same lines as the Barbie Beauty Boutique, you get to choose hairstyles and clothing for your doll. There is a little more to it than the BBB, though, so I think it is more fun for the kids to play. With the What's Her Face game you get to choose your dolls face, which is fun, and then you get to choose dance moves and music for the ending scene. However, with some girls it's got to be Barbie, so that may make the BBB better in their eyes. ... Read more | |

Amazon.com Review Rapunzel and Prince Stefan have organised a masked ball, but they didn't invite the local wicked witch, Gothel. When Gothel finds out, she is furious and promptly casts an evil spell over the castle and its inhabitants. The prince is turned to stone, the jewels from his crown are scattered around, and the enchanted castle is immersed in darkness. When Rapunzel and her trusty purple--and very cute--dragon friend enter the doomed castle, they are challenged by the witch to find the jewels in order to rescue the prince and restore the castle to its former glory. One of the most magical, creative packages on the market, this interactive adventure really is superlative. The graphics are fantastic and pixels do not stick between screens. The movement is fluid and controlled and the sound is excellent. This package also develops basic PC skills, creativity, and imagination, and encourages colour recognition, shape matching, hand-to-eye coordination, and cause-and-effect recognition skills. The accompanying music completes the magical experience. Barbie as Rapunzel is accompanied by a clear, comprehensive instruction booklet that should probably be read by a parent before commencing. That said, instructions are given throughout the quest in a clear, slow voice and objects flash onscreen to reinforce the message. The help section can also be accessed at any time. The manufacturer recommends this package for children ages 5 and older, and though help may be required to begin with, a computer-literate 5- or 6-year-old will soon get the hang of things and be able to play alone. All in all, a superb package that kids, Barbie fans or not, will just love. --Susan Naylor, Amazon.co.uk Reviews (26)

Amazon.com Review Join Barbie and friends Christine and Teresa and visit five exciting venues: International City Park, Misty Mountain, Island Paradise, Rose Garden, and the fifth, mystery location, which is accessed only when the other four levels have been completed. Put on impressive performances (each venue offers more challenge than the previous one): learn how to jump, do tricks, and speed skate. A level is completed when you have mastered a practice session and then put on a show. After the first level has been completed, the exhibition area will open, and once the other locations have all been visited, extra features--including decorations, music, costumes, and more--begin to appear for use in the exhibition show. Installation is guided, and is quick and easy. Accompanying the CD-ROM is a multilingual user's manual in black and white that is comprehensive and very easy to follow. The program is designed for children ages 5 and older, but help will be needed to complete all tasks at the early end of the age range. --Susan Naylor, Amazon.co.uk Reviews (20)
To work the game, you start off by preparing for the first stop of the tour and practice a routine that you pick out of a few selections with the skater you have chosen. You can pick from three levels: easy, intermediate, or hard, and each one provides more challenges than the next. If you skate the routine well and do a good job, you will be able to do all the "good stuff"- choosing your music, costume, decorations, etc. for the tour. The game continues on like this for different tour stops such as Rose Garden and Island Paradise, with your goal to make it to the secret surprise location where you can even create your own routine. I found this game to be a lot of fun and not at all boring. Granted, it may be a little bit too easy to get through all the tour stops, but the fun doesn't stop since you can create a user name and start all over again or continue doing skating exhibitions. It is a fabolous game for all figure-skating and Barbie fans, not to mention that it is so much fun! Anyone ages 5 and up will enjoy this wonderful game.
Does being able to choose the color of the ice and Barbie's outfit compensate for what is a fairly limited program with mediocre (at best) graphics? In the eyes of that young Barbie devotee, obviously not. To make matters worse, the game's producers apparently decided to create a "multilingual" product by relying on icons without any text for most operations. This approach often makes it quite hard to determine what each does without the manual. Can't you just discover the actions of different buttons you wonder? Well, the game designers often chose to not provide any feedback that something was happening that may take a while. No hourglass, no clock, no spinning skater cursor. So for those operations that take more than a few seconds (e.g. loading a new scene) the player ends up thinking their click did nothing and they try clicking something else with unpredictable results. Frustrating. A final word about the graphics. Sure you can dress her and her friends in five different outfits, but shouldn't we expect something a little more than 640x480 resolution these days? It didn't crash, but you should save your money. If you could skate Barbie into a wall it MIGHT have been worth it. After 45 minutes with this program, that is what BOTH of us wanted to do.

Amazon.com Review Rescue missions come in over the phone or via e-mail; after learning which petis missing where, travel with Barbie on her scooter to one of three differentenvironments in which to search for one of eight lost pets. In many missions, you'll have to use your wits to figure out how to entice scared animals to cometo you, or how to retrieve pets trapped in trees or other sticky situations. Ifyou get stuck yourself, Barbie's full of helpful hints to send you on the rightdirection. With each successful mission, you'll receive a printable Paw & PurrAward that hangs on the PRC wall. Rescued pets come back to the Pet Rescue Center with you and Barbie to wait fortheir owners and receive a little TLC. Nurse them back to health in the Care Center, where you'll give recovered pets water, treats, vitamins--evenbaths and brushings; sometimes you may also need to bandage a hurt leg or pickburrs from ruffled fur. After creating a file for them in the computer andgiving them a name you select from a list of suggestions, the animals go to oneof two playrooms to wait for their owners. In the meantime, you can play with them, plus all the other pets already in theplayroom--a kitten, bunny, hamster, puppy, and even a turtle--in what is perhapsthe best of the game's activities: petting! Select which animal you'd like topet, then use the cursor to stroke an animal's head or back, or perhaps scratchher under the chin. The animals respond to your attention as they might in reallife, by licking, rolling over, purring, or barking. It's the next-best thing toa romp in the park with a real-live kitten or beagle. There is a related game for each kind of animal--Kitten Keepaway, Puppy Treat Toss, Hamster Trail, etc.--and if you do well enough, you'll see theanimal do something especially cute. A few of the games test kids' logic andspatial aptitude, but mostly they challenge players' mouse mastery and hand-eyecoordination; a speedy "click" finger yields frequent success. Our only complaint: once players have completed all eight rescue missions andthe activities in the playrooms, there's not a lot more to do. It's always funto pet the animals, but it's not likely to hold kids' attention for frequentreplay. That said, this graphically rich program is a real treat for any animallover. We plan on keeping this game around for those moments when wereally wish we had a dog around. (Ages 5 and up) --Leah Ball Reviews (41)

Amazon.com Review Play begins in the lounge, where Barbie and her lithesome yet curvy teammates, Christie and Teresa, await practice orders. Players must guide the girls through practice routines on the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor. Moves are executed by hitting the arrow keys and space bar in a sequence that suddenly appears on the left side of the screen. If a player hits the wrong keys, or doesn't hit the right keys soon enough, their gymnast will bobble or (gasp!) fall off their apparatus, and the coach, Kira, will chirp "Don't give up!" as the program churns relentlessly onward. Maintaining composure after knocking Barbie off the beam is difficult, but just like an actual competition, the good players shake it off and keep going. Young gymnasts will probably enjoy sweating out their mistakes, the realism of the sounds (that hollow thud as hands and feet contact the balance beam), and the 3-D images of gymnasts performing their moves as the "camera" swoops in for different angles. Another nice touch is a replay component that allows players to watch their routines once completed. It's hard to watch the routine as it's being executed, because you must instead keep your eyes on the "Power Bar" that orders the keystrokes for each move. When players master enough walkovers and handsprings to earn a high score, they're allowed to attend local, sectional, regional, and national competitions where prizes are trophies, new moves to add to their repertoire, and of course, new team outfits. Here's where the cheating came in: at a local competition, we ran our Team Barbie members through their paces and scored 9.2s and 9.3s, while our competitors consistently scored 9.5s and 9.6s. Despite this, come trophy time, Team Barbie got the gold with a score average that was mysteriously boosted to 9.4! For this blatant disregard for the lessons of losing and accurate math, we'll give Barbie Team Gymnastics an 8.3 for style, and a 7.0 for execution. (Ages 6 and older) --Anne Erickson Reviews (16)
Then we got a message, "CPU Not Supported." A quick trip to the Vivendi Universal website confirms that our processor, the P4, is not supported by this game and that there is no patch available to fix this. Reading the box would not have told us this. The system requirements were Windows 95/98/2000/ME and "Pentiun II processor or higher." Well, P4 is higher than P2, and that chip wasn't released yesterday. I think that's simply unacceptable. My daughter was disappointed, the product is going back to the store, and it's getting one star for not supporting a widely distributed processor. We can't run it on our laptap either because Windows XP isn't supported. Ridiculous! Reviewed 13 April 2004 by mad-haus.
To play, you start off by choosing the gymnast that you want to practice with, which can be Barbie, Christie, Teresa, or all three of them. You are then taken to the team roster, where you can choose the event you want to go to, or look at the gymnasts' notebooks, which show all of the skills that they have learned. When you are in the practice room, you can create your routine using the skills you know and then practice them with the gymnast to get them correct. If you score on or above the target score that Kyra, your coach, has for you, Kyra will tell you that this routine is ready and you will then do another event. There are four events, vault, beam, floor, and bars, and after you finish practicing the routines and getting them down, you can go to competition! If the team places first in the competition (there are four total), all the gymnasts will recieve new, more difficult and spectacular skills to put in their routines and new leotards to wear in practice and competition, too! The game is so much fun and really helps time to fly by. It is fantastic for any Barbie or gymnastics fan and is quite easy to play, too.

Amazon.com Review In order to bring the thieves to justice, Barbie has a full team of helpers anda complement of gadgetry. To get past a guard who won't let her through a door, she uses her compact to blow foundation in his face. To investigate areas tootiny for her to access, she has a robotic spy puppy. Her Pinkvision goggles canseek out the combinations to otherwise secured doors. Finally, Barbie has twogymnastic skills: dive rolls that carry her past guarded areas, and jumps to getover obstacles and laser alarms. By virtue of its emphasis on gizmos, this game makes itself a distant relativeof pop-culture heroes like James Bond or the Mission Impossible teams. However, Secret Agent Barbie lacks the defining characteristic of thismilieu: violence. Barbie has a stealth mode for sneaking around game scenery, anadventure mode for calmer moments, and an action mode for running and jumping.(Each of these modes comes with its own costume options.) What Barbie doesn'thave is a fight mode. Whether this is a good or bad thing may be entirely amatter of parental and player opinion. Regardless of your position on mayhem, Secret Agent Barbie has a fewdefinite weaknesses. Gameplay is really just a process of moving from oneanimated sequence to the next--and the quality of these sometimes lengthy moviesis only so-so. The game is highly inflexible, pursuing a straight path to thestolen fashions. As a result, its replay factor is almost zero. As for themystery-solving element, players don't find clues so much as stumble overthem. That said, Secret Agent Barbie does move the widely beloved doll into adistinctly macho career path, allowing girls to tag along with their heroine ona globetrotting adventure. (Ages 6 and older) --Alyx Dellamonica Reviews (27)
Barbie can jump from rooftop to rooftop, record secret conversations with a hidden device, find messages with a pair of sunglasses, and track a sneaky person using what looks like plain old perfume. Barbie can blow powder in a guard's face when trying to sneak through a door she is not allowed in. You get a few seconds to put away the powder and walk past him. She can also sneak and tumble when she is in STEALTH MODE. In ACTION MODE you can run and jump, in ADVENTURE MODE you can talk to people and walk around. In all modes you can use your gadgets and do puzzles. You can go to Tokyo, Rio, Egypt, France, and New York in a private jet. Aboard the jet is a training room where you can practice all your 007 stunts. This was a nice game, except it was a bit hard. You never died, or lost a life, you just got to do it again. The spotlights, lasers, and the cameras are pretty hard to dodge, so a parent should accompany their daughter while playing this game. CIAO!!!
