Amazon.com Review

Kids who don't want to leave the Cretaceous period--as depicted in Disney's thundering Dinosaur film--will thrill at this whimsical Activity Center, created by the same company that made the movie. Graced with snippets of evocative music, animation, and voice talent from the film, this CD-ROM has great ambiance throughout, whether you're playing simple arcade games or spending long moments picking out a unique tail and roar for your hand-built dinosaur.

As you'd imagine, much of the film's personality is echoed here. You'll see the same moody prehistoric habitats, the same eye-popping dinosaur animations, the same stupid lemur jokes, and the same absence of scientific veracity. If you want a truly educational software program about dinosaurs, you'll have to look elsewhere (try the Magic School Bus or Dorling Kindersley CD-ROMs for true facts). With this program, you'll instead get loads of imagery, drama, and hypnotic games and activities rife with snarling Carnotaurs and Velociraptors.

There are five areas to explore in this CD-ROM: one cool puzzle-making activity that allows you to construct a dinosaur all the way down to its exact roar, one neat chesslike strategy game that pits carnivorous dinos against their vegetarian brethren, and three hypnotic games that don't offer much beyond compulsive multilevel arcade play. It's hard to figure out whom the ironic Dating Game-style "Lemur Love Match" is meant to appeal to, yet in all other cases, the games (no matter how basic) are so well stocked with massive, rumbling reptiles that any layman dinosaur fan is going to find them perfectly satisfying. 1-0 out of 5 stars typical Disney: looks good, no substance
This disk has very little to recommend it. It's little more than a collection of dinosaur-themed games -- and pretty uninteresting (and annoying) games at that. Nor is there any educational content to speak of. My six-year-old son lost interest in it after about 10 minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 5 year old son loves this game!
This game has been well worth the [money] I paid when the game first came out! My 5-year-old son is a dinosaur fanatic and has logged hours and hours on this game over the past year! His favorite game is Colosol Fossil Face Off, a chess type game where the heros of the movie "Face Off" against the villainous meat eaters! Great game for developing strategies!

The software is easy to maneuver through and the Arcade-style games are both entertaining and challenging with some games offering up to 100 different levels!

I will agree that this game is a waste of money if you have an older system! We had several problems when we first bought the game, but have since updated our system and now have NO PROBLEMS at all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hours of Fun
My daughter is five and she loves this game. She first borrowed
it from the neighbor boy who is seven. I am embarrassed to say,
she played for four hours straight. She did not want to stop
even to eat. She has several other games she likes, such as
Adiboo, Barbie, Freddie the Fish, but this one realy holds her attention. Now I limit her computer time.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT ALL IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE
I AM DISAPPOINTED IN THIS GAME. THE GRAPHICS ARE NOT PART OF THE GAMES THEMSELVES,THEY ARE ONLY AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH SEGMENT.
BE AWARE THOUGH, THIS GAME TAKE UP ALOT OF SPACE FOR ANYONE WITH AN OLDER SYSTEM. THE ONLY PART MY 5 YEAR OLD SON ENJOYS IS THE DINOSAUR BUILDING GAME.

The brightly structured world of Thomas the Tank Engine and his friendswill appeal to the orderly side of preschoolers as they help rescue a derailedengine, put it back on the tracks, spiff it up, and get it back to work. If yourolder toddler glows when told he or she is helpful or a hard worker, this CD-ROMwill put them in junior train-engineer heaven.

The story begins with an engine named James eagerly heading out to get more coalfor the other engines, but things don't go quite as planned; James has anaccident on a sharp corner because he's being too hasty. Kids get to help rescueJames and restore him to his shiny, bright-red self by completing eightactivities that will test their problem-solving skills, spatial abilities, anddeductive reasoning. They must find James, properly assemble crane gears to gethim lifted back onto the track, collect coal, find the proper parts, and installthem on James by listening to whistles, looking at train parts, and then puttingeverything in its place. Once James has a full tank of water and a full bin ofcoal, kids get to drive the repaired engine. This is the best part of thisfriendly CD-ROM, as it demonstrates to little locomotive fans how steam engineswork, from shoveling coal to goosing the throttle.

Each activity has three levels, and Trouble on the Track also hasclickable surprises interspersed throughout each activity, something thatearlier Thomas offerings lacked. Kids can visit Sir Topham Hatt's office to seeand print their certificates (they get one for every level of each activity theycomplete) or various pictures that they can color, turn into puzzles, or simplyhang on their walls. Everyone from the Horrid Lorry to the Troublesome Trucks ishere, and Thomas the Tank Engine fans will enjoy this program as it gently chugsalong. (Ages 3 and older) --Anne Erickson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!
When I found this software I was excited because my son LOVES Thomas, but then I read all of the bad reviews and was scared to order it for him. I took a chance and ordered it anyway and LUCKILY we have had no problems with it so far. My son will sit and play it for hours without needing much assistance. I have noticed when you go to Sir Topham Hatts Office and print things out you have to kind of let it do it's thing and not get ahead of it. It will minimize the Thomas screen and return to the desktop while printing but you just have to click on the icon at the bottom of the page to return to the game. The graphics have been very smooth, not choppy at all. When I installed it there was an option for "minimum", "normal", or "maximum" installation. It told me we had enough memory to do the maximum so that's what I chose. I don't know what others used so I don't know if that could be the reason why it runs ok for us. We have a 128MB, 100MHZ computer with a video card that supports up to 2X AGP. I hope other Thomas fans find this helpful to them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thomas the Tank Engine: Trouble on the Tracks
I highly recommend this for any young Thomas the Tank Engine fan. My 2.5 year old loves this. The graphics are very nice and detailed. As your child completes an activity, he can click on Thomas and go to the next stage of the journey. This is especially for the child who loves James. The activities on the island are: Search for James (James fell off the tracks and the user needs to guide Harold the Helicopter over the island to find James); Collect the Coal; Fix the Breakdown Train; Find James' Whistle; Load the Freight; Locate James' Lamp; Repair James; Prepare James for his Run. It hs 3 levels of difficulty and certificates are kept in the Controller's Office. Beware of the minimum system requirements though - the software states you need at least a Pentium 166 and 32 MB RAM and we have a Pentium 233 and 64 MB RAM and it still runs a bit choppy. And it wouldn't let us do a maximum install which would allow us to play without the CD installed.

1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING - Windows Killer!
I bought this game last night for my two-year-old, and installed it right away. Installation seemed to go smoothly, until it reached the point where it had to restart the system.

I wish I hadn't clicked on "OK" so quickly. It would have been nice to say goodbye to a lifetime's worth of data and work.

Yup, "Thomas the Tank Engine: Trouble On The Tracks" killed my computer dead. Windows is utterly corrupted, and I am now the proud owner of a $2,000.00 paperweight.

"Windows must be reinstalled"..."Kernal32 corrupted"...and then nothing. I've never seen Windows deader than this, and I can't even reinstall. I've got a boot disk and will try again tonight, but at this point I have no way of knowing if ANY of my data has survived.

The game cost $9.96 at Wal-Mart. It wasn't worth it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Short shelf life
My 3 1/2 year old son loved this CD for exactly 2 days, then became bored with it and hasn't picked it up since. The games on it are one-dimensional and not geared for long-term play.

2-0 out of 5 stars A So-So game.
My 4 year-old played with it for about 2 weeks and then she has never asked me to play it again. It's just not that interesting and challenging. You have to go at the software's pace of things, which is annoying since you may already be familiar with the instructions. So because the longevity factor doesn't last too long and the challenge factor is not there, I cannot recommend this game. ... Read more

This game is so bad and horable. It is to short and to easey. A monkey can make better game than this loser game I rate this game .

5-0 out of 5 stars Golden Hydrant, Golden Game
I got this game a while ago and it didn't take me very long to beat. Still, you get to pick between six fun Catdog games. In one , you need to get pieces of tickets while dodging the Greaser Dogs. In the others, you're in the Arctic, Taco Depot, space, a tomb filled with mummies, and trying to climb up a hill. All in all, it's very fun, yet might be too easy for an older audience. I think this game would be perfect for younger crowds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids Love It
My 6 & 9 year old daughters love playing this. My 4 year old nephew caught on quick also. They can sign in under their own name. There are 6 CatDog games, they can choose the level of difficulty from 1 to 10.

Most of the playing involves the arrow keys on the keyboard, which is helping them out to be able to look at the monitor without looking at the keys they need to use. Sounds effects are excellent.

This game does take some skill and kids will quickly pick up more on that after playing this game.

You can also save a game in the beginning, midddle, or end. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not worth it
...I was excited that finally I can get another great CD for my five year old. What a disappointment it was when we installed it. The box says 4-6 year olds, but my two year old was able to do it. My five year old said that it was too boring.
There were also other problems with the software. The characters talked but the voices came out later, (like watching a bad chinese movie). The activities were boring, except for the part were the kids made up their own stories.
I figure that if you will spend [the money]...on software for kids, it better be good. This one just did not do it for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars a terrific software package for young children
My two-year old likes Franklin so I bought this CD with the idea of saving it for a year or two, but when he recently began using the mouse I decided to let him try this program. He loves it. Because he is younger, there are a couple of things he has trouble with, such as the Frogger-type game (hosted by Beaver, not Bear, as stated in the editorial review) and with Rabbit's difference detective game. However, he enjoys the poster making with Franklin, the friendship bracelets with Bear, hide-and-seek with Fox, and putting together the dinosaurs with Snail. All the original voices from the show seem to be here, lending to its authenticity.

With each accomplishment there is a little bell that rings and a symbol that lights up -- nice positive feedback -- and when ten symbols are lit up, the child gets a badge for their scrapbook. As stated, there are three levels of difficulty for each activity so each game can be customized.

There are also printable activities -- posters, etc., and the print feature works well.

We are running Franklin's Clubhouse Adventures on a Macintosh G4 and it installed easily and runs without crashing. We ALL like this game. You and your child probably will too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Challenging at times, yet hours of fun.
This is one of the best games I have bought for my son. He is 5 years old and loves educational games like this. While, it may not teach ABC's it helps hand-eye coordination, quick reflexes, and thinking ahead. There were areas my son needed help with, but for the most part he could figure out how to do the activities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hours of fun!
My 4-year-old just loves this. It is definitely worth every penny. It is so much better than many software products we have purchased in the past. It is so much fun -- and educational, too. After you play each game, you earn badges. My daughter is just so proud of her accomplishments on this. There are three skill levels so older kids can enjoy it, too. It's easy to use and not frustrating at all. I highly recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful game!
I purchased this game for my 4 year old son, who LOVES Franklin. We played it together, and I must say I was impressed. The games are lively and fun, and the graphics are adorable. My son has been playing it over and over - I really feel I've gotten my money's worth here. ... Read more

Hey howdy hey, all you deputies out there! Now you can have as much fun as Andy does with Buzz and Woody in this activity pack that's chock full of arcade games and printable art. Most of the games have a theme found within the movie; you'll even get to play "dodge the traffic" hidden inside road cones! There's also a hilarious trek through the luggage carousel with Buzz on a hunt to rescue Woody, and it's trickier than you might think.

All the games have adjustable levels of difficulty (so kids can play at more advanced levels, while you putter around as a beginner, 'cause let's face it, they're better at these things than parents are!). One of the elements that kids can print is a fantastic colorable comic book featuring all of Andy's toys. Even those goofy three-eyed aliens put in an appearance! Also ready-to-print are posters, stickers, and greeting cards; a birthday party could easily be decorated with the stuff within Activity Center.

Whether kids see themselves as a space ranger or identify as a cowpoke, there's plenty of fun for a rainy afternoon or two in this game pack. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Won't install under Win XP
The disneyinteractive.com customer support section has an entry for the problem but no solution. Calling their 888 number you learn that you need to send your CD-ROM (with a receipt) in to Disney for a swap. Apparently the problem is so ingrained in the software that it can't be published on the internet as an update. What a drag!

5-0 out of 5 stars ALL of my kids love this game!
I have three kids who LOVE this game. (A 5,7 and 9 year old.) It is fun and entertaining for all of them! My 7 and 9 year old girls especially like the "Comic Book Creator" My 5 year old son likes all the games, especially "Traffic Cones" and "The Toy Shelf" I have caught him laughing and having lots of fun when he plays! Based on my childrens reaction I Highly recommend this one! If you are looking for a fun game and love Toy Story, BUY THIS!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It!
I'm with the majority on this one. This is a TERRIBLE program, well below the standards you would normally associate with the Disney brand. My 4 year-old, who is well-versed in children's computer software, lost interest almost immediately. The games are boring, lack depth and replay value, and are difficult to operate--most use the arrow keys to navigate instead of the mouse or track ball which we use. The printing projects lack choices, although they do produce nice output. All in all, a major disappointment.

On the other hand, the Lion King 2 Activity Center program which we bought at the same time is excellent. I think that the reason for the inconsistency is that while these programs are commissioned and marketed by Disney Interactive, they are actually produced by different independent developers who apparently have a great deal of latitute in determining what goes into the finished product. Disney needs to exert more control on product definition and quality control if they want to avoid another black eye like this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and challenging!
I can't believe anyone had anything negative to say about this game - it's GREAT!!!! It has four fun games, and each one has three levels of difficulty. The games all relate to the movie, which my son really likes. It's a bit too advanced for my 3-year-old at this point, but he can do the easiest level of the cone game (getting the cones across a street while avoiding oncoming cars), and I help him play the other games. I think when he's about five he'll be more able to play it. It's VERY educational in the sense that the games require good memory, logical thinking, and strategy, anticipating the next several moves you should make. I'm 35 years old and no dummy, but the luggage game (a series of 10 mazes) took me about 30 tries before I could win! The first few mazes were easy, but they got progressively harder, with booby traps and decoy cases. Each time you play, you have to remember which way was the right way to go in each maze, or you can get trapped. Honestly, it's a LOT of fun! The "critter corral" game is a bit like checkers. The first level is easy, level two is more challenging, and level 3 is VERY hard - again, I'm an adult, and it's taking me lots of practice to learn how to beat it! The Toy Shelf game is a fun arcade game. The only weak spots are the two art sections, but all in all, I think it's definitely worth the money for four fun, challenging games that are entertaining for kids OR adults. We got the game four days ago, and my son still asks for it immediately when he wakes up in the morning, and wants to play it three or four times a day.

1-0 out of 5 stars Loser
My 4 year-old (who is great at playing cd games) lost interest in 10 minutes. This is a badly designed game with minimal graphics and no story. There are a few games like "print" where you click on something and it prints...you don't even get to choose the character. The cone crossing game uses the arrow keys, not the mouse. And it crashes badly on the Mac. It is very un-Mac like. Too bad, we are such great fans of the movie. But save your money here. ... Read more

Exploring London and Paris to find 102 missing Dalmatian puppies isquite an adventure; kids dodge Cruella, Le Pelt, and Alonso while playing zany, multilevel games and learning about historic spots.

This CD-ROM is extremely kid-friendly. Kids ages 4 through 8 navigate the mainscreen using a giant puppy paw as a cursor. However, one of the games, Adopt aPuppy, requires Internet connectivity and parental supervision since kidsdownload up to six "international online parks" as they progress through thegame.

Whether children print postcards from around the world or learn theresponsibilities of adopting a virtual puppy, they'll get to practice theirproblem-solving skills while trying to make all 102 Dalmatians happy. Ourfavorite game in Disney's 102 Dalmatians Activity Center is Verdogo, afast-paced arcade-style maze where kids travel through pneumatic tubes, rotatingpans, ladders, and moving belts to find wayward pups while avoiding Alonso, LePelt, and Cruella.

Another challenging game, Chow Time, has kids slinging dog food while gettinggreat practice using the arrow keys and space bar to make sure none of the pupsgoes hungry. For creative kids, the Pup Art Gallery will provide hours of funwhile kids study the masters of "pup" art. Children can create their own art bychoosing from a variety of backgrounds and character stickers from the movie.

Finally, kids get a chance to play detective in Operation: Dalmatian, amind-bending logic game. Children can play this interactive, top-secret mission andapply deductive reasoning skills as they collect clues to find the Top Dog.(Ages 4 to 8) --Tina Velgos ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Game... Parts of it are a bit monotonous for young kids
This game was purchased for my six year old. She is a pretty active kid...not a lot of computer experience yet. When she first began to play, she was very tempted to look at her fingers...I sat beside her and held a lg. piece of paper over her hands, which solved the problem. The first night she learned to type f,d,j and k. She liked to "shoot bugs" (by typing the correct letter) but mandatory pages of just letters was a bit frustrating for her. I think that this game should go a little slower and therefore be more of a game and less work. I rate this game a solid B. It seems that it would be perfect for an 8 or 9 year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time to give Mavis her walking papers!
This is not one of those cutesy titles that only pretends to be about education. This is an extremely well-designed, well-thought-out program that effectively teaches typing (i.e., keyboarding). Anything even remotely associated with The Lion King may trigger the gag reflex in survivors of the whole Lion King blitzkrieg, but rest assured: Timon and Pumba do not have center stage here; the lessons do. Never sacrificing the functional for the cute or gimmicky, this program is structured, yet adaptive, and uses a gradual progression of exercises to provide just the right degree of challenge as the user progresses. In other words, the program captivates by providing variation (to keep things from getting dull) and by making the goal seem easy while maintaining just the right level of difficulty. Both my wife and nine-year-old were instantly hooked and have progressed dramatically. I do have a few minor complaints (for example, icons for navigating through the program could be more intuitive or--Heaven forbid--identified with actual words), but overall, this is a finely crafted tool that condenses a one-semester high school typing class (of yore) onto a single CD-ROM--but without the boring teacher.

I have had a terrible time getting this program to run. It constantly shuts down or comes up with errors. It was a total waste of money as far as I am concerned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great game, tons of fun!!!!!!
This game includes four fun-filled levels. It's great for kids of all ages. But I am sorry that it is SO difficult to find in stores. I recomend this item to anyone who is looking for a very, very fun learn to type game for children.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring! Boring! Boring!
While this program appears to be cute and engaging at the onset, it quickly becomes very boring. My daughter likes the ONE game, but can't get past the first row of typing because it's so monotanous. There is nothing to challenge her to keep going and improving - no incentive. Just more boring repetition like we had to do in high-school. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Rewarding
In a word, disappointing. We purchased this game thinking it was representative of Disney interactive products. At first, our five year old son enjoyed playing it but quickly bored of it. Kids have to repeat the phonics exercises over and over and over again - sometimes more than 10 times - to receive any kind of fan-fare or reward in retrieving the Sorcerer's lost items. Excellent graphics and great activities but there certainly should be more verbal or graphic reward as incentives to make the child want to further pursue the game. Kids of this age react much better to more frequent reward...and this game just disappoints for computer active, advanced children. Other Disney products have been better received.

2-0 out of 5 stars Almost very good
My daughter is 4 and loves all things Disney. This game has a lot to offer and in the beginning she was very gung-ho about playing. But at this age, there needs to be rewards rather frequently to maintain their interest. In Phonics Quest, there are plenty of choices for her to choose from-which is great. And many of the games are quite educational. There is a game for sorting and listening skills. One for ryhming words. Another for patterns. There is simple spelling-fill in the missing letter, and so on. The problem with it is that the kids have to work for a long time to get each prize-the missing items from the castle for which Mickey is on a quest. By a long time, I mean that they have to answer about 20 or more problems in each of the 6 rounds. Then, there are 6 prizes in all to get. Now, after all of this hard work, one would expect a little fanfare for the kids to make it worth fighting for. But the fan fare is almost non existent and then just rushes you off to do it again. I find its the fan fare that keeps them coming back for more. Jaclynn has stopped coming back for more after about 4 rounds and dubbed the game boring.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good teaching tool, but not enough magic
We just got back from Disneyworld so my daughter was very eager to play this new "game."

She is still playing it, but keeps asking: "where's Mickey?" The idea is that Mickey travels around trying to retrieve stuff missing from the castle. Each missing item can only be recovered after completing a lengthy phonics drill. During most of the drills Mickey and the recognizable Disney characters are off-screen. And you have to correctly answer a large number of questions before you get a prize. The cute animated graphics only briefly disguise the fact that these are pretty routine exercises.

The software worked very well on our old PC (AMD 500 Mhz, no graphics card). No problems installing or delays in loading etc...

The software automatically adjusts the difficulty level based on the accuracy of the responses. This should allow the software to be used for a long time as a child's skills improve.

The software comes with a microphone and voice recognition software. Unfortunately you have to "train" the voice recognition software to understand a user's speech patterns by reading lengthy texts into the microphone. Do you see the problem here? If my daughter could read those texts then we wouldn't be buying this CD... I can read the texts, but my voice is quite different from my daughters. The end result was that when a "voice recognition" opportunity appeared during the game my daughter would shout answers into the microphone and get no response.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 5 Year old loves this games ! Excellent product !
We purchased this title yesterday and she has been playing it for two days straight. This is by far the best reaction we have seen out of the 15 or so titles she already owns. The game is easy to interface with for kinds as young as 4 and entertaining enough for kids up to 6. Unless your child has some challenges with learning, I don't think it would be a worthwhile purchase for any child much over the age of 6. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Get ready to save the day! The Rescue Heroes are a great team of emergency technicians who have all kinds of skills and gadgets at their disposal, and they'll all be put to good use.

First, meet the team at the command center--Billy Blazes fans will be thrilled to work with such a talented bunch. Then, accompanied by decent graphics and a suspense-building musical soundtrack, set out to rescue families from different tropical storm disasters. In order to rescue folks, you need to know the best ways to get around the storms and where it's safe to take hurricane victims once they're out of immediate danger. As you successfully accomplish each mission (which happens with careful planning, teamwork, and all-around bravery), you receive printable Rescue Heroes honor badges and personalized certificates. You can also take a breather from the exhausting work of heroism and head to the design center, where you can create your own printable rescue gear.

Rescue Heroes: Hurricane Havoc requires surprisingly simple mouse skills for an action game. Your team is around to narrate so, while reading is helpful, it's not absolutely necessary. Any kindergartner who likes helping those in need (or has a secret longing to become a superhero) is sure to have a blast with this game. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

My 4 year old is a Rescue Hero fanatic and he loves this game! The music is catchy, the graphics are good and the adventures are fun.
