Amazon.com Review

Skate, score, and bounce your way to a place in gaming history. The Rocket Power gang is out to have some fun on the beach, and they're taking you along for the ride. Rocket Power: Extreme Arcade Games is a four-game package for young action fans, a good starter for children interested in arcade-style computer gaming.

Rocket Pogo places Sam on an obstacle course, for example, where he bounces around collecting parts for a robot he is building, while avoiding anything that might make him wipe out. Sandcastle Slam is a sort of combat Pong, where players bounce balls against each other's battlements in an attempt to destroy their opponents' sand castles. Hockey Shot is an exercise in basic movement theory, with Otto trying to rebound a hockey puck into an increasingly obstructed net.

In each of these three games, players collect gold bonus coins that unlock a fourth activity. In Roller Rocketball, Twister collects balls that have been littered on the boardwalk, firing them into the trash bins where they belong and racking up points.

Rocket Power offers single-player and head-to-head modes, and each of its activities has 10 levels of difficulty. Succeed at all 10 levels, and you qualify for a silver medal. To get the gold, users must play all 10 levels of each game perfectly--which means collecting every single one of the gold bonus coins displayed on the game screens. The four games contained in this package are slow-paced by arcade standards and more than a little repetitive. They are also far from original in concept or execution. Even so, only one game is seriously flawed--Rocket Pogo is slow-running, with an interface that is very nearly player-hostile.

The other three activities more than make up for this weakness, though, with cheery graphics, solid action, appealing sound effects, and, of course, a chance to hang with the Rocket Power kids on their own sporting turf. --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not player-hostile! It's fun!
Rocket Pogo is really fun, but it takes a few tries to get the controls figured out. And it runs great on my machine. It's true that the games are not completely original, but few Rocket Power fans have played the games they ARE based on. Roller Rocketball is worth unlocking because it's one of the funnest games, too. The graphics look just like the show. The music is awesome - can I buy a CD soundtrack? This game is a great deal for hours of fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for All Ages
My son bought this product for our computer. He is 8. He loves it. My daughter who is 12 also plays it. I would definitely recommend this for any Rocket Power fan.

Big Bad Pete has kidnapped the mayor, and as Mickey or Minnie, it's yourjob to collect enough hidden items to build a flying rescue machine to help gethim back in one piece. In Disney's Mickey Saves the Day, kids can turnthe whole town upside down as they explore and search for clues. Choose to playin Mickey's or Minnie's shoes as you move the cartoon characters through 25different locations, loaded with hidden items to click on and lush graphics.

Disney's Mickey Saves the Day emphasizes cooperation, friendship, andteamwork while teaching kids the importance of caring for the environment. Inaddition to collecting cans in a fun-filled recycling game, players participatein the following activities:

Linking Logs--A tricky grid-based maze in which kids race against theclock and dodge obstacles in a toothpick factory. Watch out for switched doors, steam, slamming doors, trap doors, flip-down doors, and conveyor belts.

Traffic Jam--Getting Donald out of this jam is quite a challenge; to getto Donald's possessions, players must cross a busy freeway that runs through thecenter of his house! Kids learn problem-solving skills through this multilevelactivity.

Songbirds--A cool musical activity in which children can arrange birds onfour equally spaced telephone poles. Watching Mickey or Minnie conduct thesinging birds is foot-stomping fun, and it gives kids practice in arrangingmusical notes and recognizing pitch differences.

Trash Bashing--Goofy is up to his usual antics in this real-liferesponsibility game that challenges kids to sort items in a trash pile and clickon matching pairs. The garbage pile is bigger than it appears; there aremultiple layers, and not all items are always visible, so look closely....

Sandwich Hero--Kids use their mouse skills to catch sandwich ingredientshurled by an automatic sandwich-making device. Children quickly move Mickey orMinnie across the screen and help them catch the right ingredients to make ayummy sandwich.

Once players have found all the clues and items needed to complete the flyingmachine, they'll witness a hilarious rescue that proves crime doesn't pay. (Ages4 to 8) --Tina Velgos ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Pay attention to the other reviews!
After we installed the game it would not start It froze on a black screen and we had to go to Disneyinteractive.com to download an update. The link there didn't work so we had to email support to send us the update. We were highly anticipating playing the game by the time we were able to get it running and were very disappointed. The scenery and colors are lovely but the game is very difficult to play. It moves very slowly, hotspots are difficult to use, the instructions are badly written and there were not enough things happening on each screen to hold the interest of my five year old.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very confusing, kids lost interest quickly....
There seems to be a lot of difference of opinion on this game, so maybe it's subjective, but...
My kids (then 8 and 5) both dove into this new computer game, much as they do with any new game we get, but quickly found themselves very confused and frustrated. The interface is a bit clumsy; it wasn't real obvious what to do or even what could be done, and there isn't much in the way of in-context help to explain. After a lot of aimless wandering around within the game world, both kids gave up on the program in favor of several others that do a much better job of involving and entertaining them, and haven't gone back to it since.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad but still buggy
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 5-year old who had tried out a few scenes at Disneyland's Innoventions exhibit. Overall, she enjoyed the game and made her way through the scenes with just a little help. The programmers could have made the interface a bit better, though. The "hot zones" (where the pointer changes to allow for an action) are a bit small for some items so it gets difficult to position the mouse over an object to pick it up. Sometimes the pointer doesn't change at all. The system requirements are a bit high and we got just a "good" performance on my child's 300Mhz PII with a 32x SCSI CD-ROM. There are a number of bugs that we found as well. Mickey starts slanting at a 45-degree angle at the pond if you have him repeat a few actions. Music cuts out intermittently at a few scenes. There's also a problem with some earlier revisions of this game and it won't load if your system date goes past 12/31/2000 (a fix was posted to the www.disneyinteractive.com website recently). Overall, this was a decent try but I'd hope that Disney Interactive does a better job next time. I saw the earlier reviews and they seemed split 50-50 between "fantastico" and "thppth". If you think you're PC-savvy enough to deal with these bugs and if your system has the horsepower, this program won't be excessively problematic.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Disgrace for Disney
This is a MUST RETURN item. Don't destroy your sales receipt! I can't believe that this product was manufactured and created with the latest computer technology available in the year 2000. It is confusing, frustrating, illogical, and the 3D animation received a big "thumbs-down" by all users. Not even the HELP files can save an adult's self-esteem and sanity. The kids will run screaming from the computer when you drag this one out...

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this game
Out of the many computer games we have bought, this game has been one of the most disappointing. Unfortunately, the layout of the game does not allow you to move to the different areas. Additionally, with a 200 MHz machine, it is very slow to load varios screens. As another viewer said, you have to print out the help screens to figure out how to play. This is not acceptable for a four year old.

I am staying away from the Disney Games for now. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Combining one of childhood's most enduring toys with the current craze for Harry Potter, this game has a capacity for entertaining young players that is almost magical. LEGO Creator: Harry Potter lets you use standard LEGO blocks to construct a world for Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Then you get to turn them loose in it! Whether setting up a postal route for Harry's owl, practicing spells with the kids of Hogwarts, or using the workshop to configure the LEGO buildings and structures, players will find this game thoroughly absorbing.

LEGO Creator: Harry Potter is atypical of children's programs, which usually run players through a fixed set of activities or educational challenges. Instead, game designers have made a serious effort to leave things wide open and flexible, sticking close to the reason why kids enjoy LEGO in the first place. Players can place LEGO units--animals, characters, blocks, doors, chests--around the landscape of Hogwarts. But this is no mere simulation of a real-life play experience--this LEGO world is animated! With a single mouse click, players bring their creations to life. Place a LEGO snake onscreen in this game, and it will promptly slither for cover. Likewise, the Harry Potter characters--who are incredibly charming when rendered as standard LEGO people--will move around the environment created for them, even interacting when they come together!

While the complexity of this package makes it tougher to master than many games, a series of tutorials disguised as challenges can smooth out the learning curve. Users explore the school, build LEGO trains, and find lost animals, and as they do, they learn the lay of the land. The challenges have another motivator built in: without them, you can't cast all the magical spells otherwise available to Harry and the others.

LEGO Creator: Harry Potter frees you to build a stage and place upon it the well-known characters from J.K. Rowling's novels. What happens next is limited only by your imagination. --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for ADD kids
Important to read the title of this software before you buy. This is a design or creator software. The word 'game' is not in the tilte, ..., doesn't mean that it will do everything $500.00 worth of legos will. Although, Lego (durable, expesive, children, and well known), Harry Potter (exciting, British, pagan, children, and well known), and Electronic Arts (software distributor, low cost, lacking patches / support, and well known) are well known, you should concern yourself with the audience before you buy. It is rated for everyone. This means no one will die, explode, or present shocking or contraversial graphics. It is a good product. It runs on my XP system, so I'm impressed. It says it comes with awards, but I didn't see them. This is not a first person shooter game. ... The visuals are a little hard to master. But if you pay attention, you can control the movement of the characters and zoom around like anyone else. Building is more difficult, yes. They could have done a better job developing and play testing the product, ... so you win some and lose some. Is it the best thing on the face of the planet, no. Could they have put some more time into this, oh yes. But for what you pay for, you cannot find this anywhere else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Kindergartner Mom
The software was a gift for my son. He was so excited about it given that it is Harry Potter and Legos. He was not able to do anything in the software except type his name. When my husband and I tried to use it with him we had similar difficulty. We have not been able to advance from the initial screens. What a disappointment. Lego usually represents Quality to me. Perhaps they should have just stayed in the Block business.

1-0 out of 5 stars HIDEOUS GAME for a Great Theme
This product has two solid names behind it -- Lego and Harry Potter, and it SHOULD be a GREAT game.
In fact, this is a game released on schedule, but before being finished. Its controls are contra-intuitive, clumsy, and v-e-r-y s-l-o-w. It locks up and freezes, some times coming back and executing your mouse click up to a minute after you've thought it didn't take, and have moved on. When it's running, it's sensitve and twitchy. Those who have said the controls are bad or frustrating are being quite kind. It takes hours to get the simplest things set up.

Then, when you're finished, you can't actually DO much with your creations.

Lego has a variety of software titles and should include good products; perhaps the second title, "LEGO Creator: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" will be usable and fun.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Hard
Ok I made a person now what? I read the manual and that made it more complicated. It takes an hour to finish building a walkway. You need to be VERY paitent to play this game. I bought it and it was horrible.I hated it! So PLEASE listen and save your money! I can think of at least 20 other things to buy with the money I paid for it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice idea......but too complex.
I love the Harry Potter Series when i saw Harry Potter And The Sorcors's Stone (the PC game) i bought it and loved it when i saw this game i got it but the contents of the game was disappointing. The Lego people can't do anything but bump in to stuff and annoy the stuffing out of you. This game seems like it would be easier for adults, but i'm not sure i do know this though, this game is WAY to hard so for ages 13 and up anyone younger would surly die of being bored. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Westward, ho! This is the charge of Oregon Trail II, the successor to the perennially popular pioneer survival game of the same name.Roughing it takes on a whole new meaning as players trek cross-country to lay claim to the undeveloped Old West, learning geography and history all the while. After selecting an initial profile for the travel leader and his or her group (occupation, names and ages of companions, type of wagon, destination, etc.), cyberpioneers must make crucial decisions from beginningto end to ensure a successful settlement: how much food, medicine, clothing, and artillery to buy at each trading post; when to hunt for wild game or barter with other pioneers; when to cross an icy river or wait out a bad storm.... One false move can mean the death of a fellow traveler or vital livestock, a loss of supplies, or debilitating illness-even the untimely endof an incomplete journey.

This dramatic adventure is not without its pitfalls: The accompanying graphics are unsophisticated (the talking townspeople and fellow sojourners suffer from "lip flap"), the sound effects aren't terribly inventive, and inexperienced players are ill equipped to make strategic decisions so important to the game. The trip across the Rockies isn't quick--players may start to feel they could have made the actual journey in less time than it takes to complete it virtually--and the three increasingly challenging levels of play designed to keep participation interesting don't do the trickfor long. But the skills to be learned along the way make these points easier to overlook. At the helm of this Western adventure, players sharpen decision-making and planning skills, learn to be responsible for others, andpick up loads of facts about the history and geography of the western UnitedStates. Whether an enhancement to a weekly American history lesson or a historically based alternative to The Sims, this trip westwill bring out the pioneer in everyone. (Ages 10 and older) --Leah Ball ...
