Amazon.com Review Corkscrew Follies will keep fans of the original game busy for some time with over two dozen new and challenging scenarios, the inclusion of eight additional types of roller coasters to build, and new themes like Jungle that you can use to decorate your park. Minor additions such as new concessions stalls can be used both to generate extra revenue and to spice up the in-game graphics as visitors interact with the new objects. Follies also features new games such as miniature golf that you can use to entertain park guests. There still is no option to build the park of your dreams with unlimited funds, but the cheat codes available on the Web will take care of that. Still, there are enough new thrills here that the few faults really don't add up to much. Fans of the original game will definitely want to step right up. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: Reviews (89)
That may seem like a lot of new things, but it's less than it seems. That's why I gave it four stars. Another game: almost all of those things have to be earned in one way or another. Like you have to get the rest of the scenarios by starting with the first five new ones (like the original game), and you have to research the attractions, themes, entertainers, etc. Another cool feature is that you can have almost all the rides play music. There are a lot of them too (like rock, techno, gentlle, horror...) and it really adds a lot of life to the park, to you and your guests. As a whole (the RCT and the expansion) this game is a sure winner. But Corkscrew Follies alone is not the best or the biggest expansion for RCT, but it's sure worth a hard-earned twenty bucks.
The game plays just like the original RCT 1. This is the first expansion and takes a good stab, but really dosen't do exactly the best. The landscaping still looks blocky to me. The scenery is limited. I think the mechanics are very unnerving because they may be right outside of the ride they need to fix and they get called for it, wander the park aimlessely for about twenty minutes than finally return. There's also a few new Gentle & Thrill rides, nothing to be excited over. Circus Show, etc. I must admit that this is a good try. Probably worth a buy with the better Loopy.
There could be a little more shops though, and different styles of bathrooms besides the same plain bathroom. The scenarios can be a little challenging I have found. I think the ones where you have to get x amount of people in your park before october year 3 or so on to complete is easier than having to get a park value of 17k by then. All in all, I think it is a pretty good game, I haven't played RCT2 so, all I know is that this is the best sim. game I've ever played! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review There are two different ways to play: Classic and No Die Roll. Both include play with up to six human or computer opponents, three being the minimum. Computer players are offered to make up for missing challengers, and they can even play by themselves (which is almost worth it just to watch all the animated videos of the accused). Players must choose their character--Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Professor Green, and the rest from the original board game--receive the appropriate amount of cards dealt from ghostly hands, and step into Boddy Mansion. The difference between the two types of gameplay lies in the title of No Die Roll. This version takes you beyond the dice of chance and provides a standard nine options for each turn. Be wary that some actions cost more options than others. Making a suggestion or taking a secret passage each costs three options, while steps to each room cost one. The newfound enjoyment of the game lies in the graphics. You can view the board as a 3-D mansion, seeing the furniture, looking through the walls and the hidden passageways; or view it as the traditional playing board--which is not as snazzy, but is easier to navigate. Characters are well animated, whether they're walking through the mansion or displaying their prowess with candlesticks and ropes in the accusation screen (don't worry parents, it is more exciting than morbid). The only drawback in this new version is that you may have to ask your noncomputer opponents to close their eyes when you peek at your cards, but reverting to the pen and paper system won't hurt, and the game will be just as suspenseful as you remembered. --Madeleine Miller Reviews (6)

Amazon.com Review Deadly Chocolate allows players to join the TKKG gang, touring the young detectives through a number of sites in the city and gathering information about the crime. Coming face to face with all the prime suspects, as well as incidental and expert witnesses, players are given an opportunity to ask each individual one of two questions. Choosing questions carefully is key to advancing the story and unlocking the puzzle. Fortunately, each of the TKKG teens can visit a suspect individually, maximizing the opportunities to gather clues and critical data. TKKG mystery games are aimed at players ages 8 and older who are interested in mysteries and enjoy having active play interrupted by medium-length animated sequences. Deadly Chocolate leans much closer to the interactive book end of the game spectrum than, say, the action-adventure end. There is a great deal of emphasis on the characters of the four young detectives, their relationships with the witnesses, and the unfolding blackmail story. Patience, observation skills, and deductive reasoning are the keys to saving the day. Deadly Chocolate has educational moments too, giving players insight into the processes by which chocolates are made, as well as information about drugs and poisons. Its primary focus, though, is the same as the TKKG gang's--solving the crime. Can you identify the blackmailer, or will he poison the chocolates and push Grunter's family over the brink to financial ruin? --Alyx Dellamonica

Amazon.com Review It's difficult to overstate how thorough and beautifully crafted this software is. The graphics are modern and inviting, and the inclusion of the Microsoft Research Organizer means that students can bookmark important areas to visit later (and cite them correctly). Certain aspects shine particularly strongly; the "Africana on Camera" section is one. For example, Maya Angelou, on video with an image overlay behind her shoulder, poetically and rhythmically explains the meaning of the word diaspora. At the same time, the amount of information on these two CDs can be overwhelming, so we recommend clicking on the "Introduction" and "Tour This Product" options right after installation. This will be time well spent in knowing the goals the creators had for this software, and in how best to negotiate its vast offerings. You'll also want to rely heavily on the "Find" function, which is somewhat hidden in the upper left corner of every page. "Find" delivers a list of results, including mentions of a subject in magazine articles and placements--when you're searching for a person--of that person in a video or photograph. Of course, not every element is equally successful. The time lines are somewhat static and contain little information, even when you click through to expand a given date. The music time line, in particular, seemed an afterthought of sorts and somewhat unbalanced. In over a century's worth of jazz, blues, rap, gospel, and vocals, only two women were pictured, and only one was identified within the captions (Bessie Smith was the unnamed figure, Lauryn Hill identified within the later years). The music time line also contained too few video clips; can a child really understand Jimi Hendrix without video or sound? In fact, the video clips were generally limited to interviews, little-known movies, and public-domain footage. Was this a way of managing the cost of such an all-encompassing project? The incorporation of history and visual elements is stronger in the "Virtual Tour" option, where you can click on pinpoints in a 360-degree shot of a cityscape to get additional historical facts. For example, when you view the streets of Paris, a pop-up click option lets you learn about opera singer Jessye Norman's command performance in a French national celebration. Excellent narrated video tours let you learn cultural context while seeing sweeping vistas of the Slave Coast and Tombouctou. While African-American culture is strongly represented, it is not at the expense of other nations and cultures. Africa itself--its geography, political developments, and cultural celebrations--has many showcases too. As Kofi Annan, secretary-general of the United Nations, outlines, Africana shows not only the place of "too much poverty [and] too many conflicts" but also a continent of "legendary cities and kingdoms." In addition, the cross-continental connections are some of the strongest narrative pieces found in this software. The barbarism of the transatlantic slave trade is strongly documented, as is the worldwide struggle ever since for human rights in the face of slavery. Be prepared to be surprised by Encarta Africana. Whether it's a contemplative 1966 essay from James Baldwin in The Nation or an article explaining the complexity of theater in the Caribbean, Africana will have something to say. Filling a void too long neglected, Encarta Africana is a potent package of vivid life seen through the computer screen. --Jennifer Buckendorff
