This is not a real product. This is a demo. This CD only contains 2 out of 8 English lessons. The rest are part of the "advanced" product.(More money please) The learning time module consists of learning "o'clock" only.No "quarter past three" or "three thirty".Just 3 o'clock. For other languages (Portuguese, Chinese etc.) it only contains the first Exercise in the first lesson.Just enough to learn to say boy, girl, cat, dog.I'm not kidding. I don't know how they get away with saying that this has been selected by the State Department.Certainly the State Department didn't select this demo.I find it hard to imagine that they would even select the full product from what I saw... ... My older son is ADD and trying to get him to study hard copy maps for hours on end, learning countries, capitals, rivers, mountains etc. was more than a chore - it was painful. This product was recommended by his teacher. It turned this into a game, but one without extraneous activities. Carmen San Diego may be fun, but it is too easy to get off task. World Discovery Deluxe is like a map version of concentration in a computer game. My son actually reached the point where he could mouse click on every country in Africa with 100% accuracy, without any country borders drawn on the continent. This software challenged him to beat his own time records. I understand that the use is very specific, more general textbook information is not included in our 1996 version, i.e. commerce, political structure ... But you will not find a better tool to teach a child in middle school or high school map information. ... Read more

I don't have problem to run the software but I do think I can write much better program than this one. It's slow and UI is not as good as it could be. I guess you can't expect too much for educational software considering its price. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review A World of Dinosaurs is a combination of two game CD-ROMs and three reference titles. The activities and games packed in 3-D Dinosaur are designed to liven up the process of learning about the dinosaur age. Players can create their own animated, three-dimensional dinosaurs, for example, or use a feature called Art-O-Saurus to draw an entire living scene appropriate to the Jurassic, Triassic, or Cretaceous periods. I Can Be A Dinosaur Finder is a top-notch game where players dig up and assemble fossils. Though the process of unearthing dinosaur bones is necessarily simplified in this game, it does convey a real sense of the gritty and less glamorous aspects of studying dinosaurs. The reference discs--Dinosaur Museum, Prehistoric Animals, and Multimedia Dinosaurs--combine extensive content with educational activities, such as quizzes and puzzles. Loaded with drawings, photographs, animations, and facts, they are an excellent resource on all aspects of evolution and prehistory. Even with the inevitable data overlap between the CD-ROMs, the volume of information in this set is massive. The package is a reissue of older material, and the look of the interface reflects this mid-nineties sensibility, with animated graphics taking precedence over live-action movie files, and a certain clunkiness in the way information is accessed. This age factor is, however, a plus for users with older PC computers or Macs, because everything in A World of Dinosaurs runs happily on these machines. --Alyx Dellamonica

Amazon.com Review Installation is easy, and the interface is as attractive and intuitive as you would expect from the institution devoted to educating the public about the world. Fire it up and search for a particular map or a place on a map, then choose which of many from 1896 to 1995 meet your needs. Browsing the maps is fun, too--zooming and sweeping over vast distances can be almost dizzying. Whether or not you're a researcher, you'll love the bookmark and log-in features, which remember your past searches and help you find facts fast. When you want to kick back for a while, take one of the thematic tours or guided lessons on mapmaking that are every bit as powerful and well-made as National Geographic's television specials. It's hard to beat National Geographic Maps for sheer eye-straining fun; better still, it makes you smarter! --Rob Lightner Reviews (4)
So when I saw this collection I purchased it. I haven't had a subscription to N.G. in 30 years, so I had some catching up to do. I found checking out all the new maps I had missed to be almost as much fun as when I was a kid, except now you can sort and search for them by topic and get info much more quickly using the CDs. The only downside to this is if you request a map that isn't on the current CD (and there are 8 of them), it will tell you you have to put in the right CD. Sometimes this means a certain amount of shuffling CDs when going back and forth between different maps. Nagivating around each map takes a little getting used to, and sometimes the print on the screen gets pretty tiny, but there is a magnification function so you can magnify anything you want and still read the articles on the maps. Overall a fun CD set to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon with just like when you were a kid.
National Geographic maps have long been invaluable resources to virtually everyone (Byrd carried one over the North Pole in '26, extensively utilized by the allies in WWII, etc.) and this software collects them all! While not as wholly geographically informative as a current National Geographic atlas, it is an excellent and cost effective substitute (it costs about half as much) which covers many things which the atlas does not. Ideally, everyone would own this, the Complete National Geographic, and a current National Geographic atlas. But, in this less than ideal world, this is a great product which deserves to be on everyone's computer.
Of course, they'd already been doing something like that for years with their bi-monthly series of map inserts. National Geographic 'maps' have always been much more than a grid on the planet's surface. They've shown the impact of geography on societal development. Indeed, each map generally tied in with an article in that issue, and showed the impact of geography on whatever the theme of that article was. Maybe it would be the development of shipbuilding in Polynesia or the influence of the Church in Europe. This package of excellent software goes the printed map series one better by virtue of its medium. You have complete control over the maps in a way not possible with their print counterparts. Plus, there are a ton of multimedia extras which make the maps come alive. The ability to go anywhere in the world and study not only its present, physical and political geography, but to also see its historical and cultural development, is wholly addictive. I challenge anyone to start using this product and NOT walk away from it enlightened. For those shopping for the best geographical education software, it's worth mentioning that this product compares favorably to _Microsoft Encarta_. Unlike the more thematic offering here, _Encarta_ is a kind of multimedia almanac. It does not pretend to be an exhaustive collection of 100-odd years of cartographic understanding, but rather uses a map interface to frame encyclopediac information. It also allows you to 'corkboard' internet sites about the various geographic regions to the map interface. And it only has one disk, so you don't have to keep flipping back and forth. As such, it's a good, basic, workhorse software for learning about the present nature of the world. _National Geographic Maps_, by contrast, makes the world come alive by providing better maps and helping you remember the geographic content by overlaying some kind of theme. As such, _NGM_ is a better educational tool, and _Encarta_ is a more convenient simple reference tool. To be sure, the maps are better on _NGM_, but because of the number of CDs and _Encarta's_ better statistical analysis interface, _Encarta's_ more convenient for quick reference. Still, almost anyone would benefit from introducing _NGM_ to their software library. It's quite simply some of the most valuable time you could spend at your computer. I have only one hesitation about this product: it would be soooo much better on DVD. Flipping through CDs is sometimes laborious, especially if you're trying to follow one theme throughout several different geographic regions. Having it all, or mostly, on one disc would be a massive improvement to the product. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review It's easy to learn all the necessary tools for hours of artistic fun, and the thoughtfully planned-out user's manual is there as a helpful guide when you're first getting started. One area that parents are sure to enjoy is the Birthday Kit--you can print all the supplies and decorations needed for a theme birthday party, from place mats to invitations! Several of the printing projects require the paper to be printed on both sides--the screen provides the prompts, but make sure that younger users are as familiar with your printer as they are with the keyboard before turning them loose! For Internet-savvy kids, the e-cards are a sure hit, and there are multiple formats in which they can add personal photos. Happily, they'll also find a spell checker and thesaurus to help with that final editing of messages. This print shop is sure to delight your own rug rat with its many options for creative activities--expect a whole new collage of fridge art soon! --Jill Lightner Features

Amazon.com The game has two difficulty settings and can be played at three different speeds. To do well in the game, you must continuously monitor the plant and animal populations and make sure that the Gungans do not harvest too many natural resources. As you play, Boss Nass, R2-D2, and Jar-Jar will keep you posted on your progress. The game also offers a Create-a-Critter feature that lets you design your own plants and animals for use in the game. You can't customize their appearance very much, but you can modify all of their vital statistics and give them a name. The game is designed for younger gamers, but adults may find it equally engaging. --Mike Ryan

Amazon.com Review The game plays just as seen on TV: spin the wheel and pick letters to word puzzles, such as "same names," "fill in the blank," and "next line please." One to three players can play from one keyboard--don't worry if you can't find an opponent; the computer will take over to create a two- or even three-person game. You may even find the computer to be more challenging than your human opponents, but also a little luckier. This game is appealing for those of us eager to "spin the wheel" at any given moment. The fantasy prizes successfully trigger your materialistic side--and since most come in his-and-her sets, the singles out there can imagine picking up two prizes for one. The background settings include decent animation, but the wheel could have used some more attention: its small size and tendency to stick when spinning reduces its appeal. Finally, while it's nice to have Vanna White as your virtual host, we couldn't help asking, "Where's Pat?" --Madeleine Miller Pros: Reviews (9)
