4-0 out of 5 stars A very nice product; but doesn't integrate with browsers.
This is undoubtedly the best dictionary & thesaurus available today. The features that impressed me the most are:

1: You don't have to leave the CD in the drive to use the 'pronounciation' feature. You can optionally install the sound files on your hard disk. (Approx. 532 MB)

2: Multiple pronounciations invoked where appropriate.

3: Installs without a glitch and integrates with MS Word.

4: Has a lot of nice features like 'Spelling Help'.

I hope the 12th Edition will integrate with email browsers, not just with MS Word. Also, I would have preferred the thesaurus invoked automatically in an additional pane instead of switching between dictionary and thesaurus.

4-0 out of 5 stars good word pronounciation
I already owned the Microsoft Encarta World English Dictionary when I bought Merriam-Webster because I wanted the software to pronounce every word, and Encarta doesn't.

Merriam-Webster's main good point:
pronouces every single entry, including various forms of each word, such as "beauty", "beautiful" plus you can copy the whole disc into your computer, so you don't have to put in the CD every time you look stuff up. Can't do with Microsoft.

Other than that, it isn't a very good computer dictionary. It looks like somebody just scanned the information into the computer. The dictionary has limited space, that's why stuff is crammed in the there, but the computer should read with more paragraph separations which costs no more memory. There are few examples.

I also don't like the fact that you have to clear each entry before you can look up the next word, which I don't have to do with Microsoft's.

It is a usable dictionary and thesarus, and has plenty of entries. I think it is particular worth it for someone learning English as a foreign language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Voice helps me a lot!
Three is no other dictionary that I can rely on more than Merriam Webster dictionary. This new edition, 11th, got all updated words used for internet and new high tech terms with accurate vocal sound. I saw some other dictionary with sound, but this dictionary got most accurate sound that I can trust. For some words that have two sounds, it pronounces both of them.
I can not work without this dictionary.

2-0 out of 5 stars great for kids
The Amazon Features: recommended this dictionary for age 9 to adult and this should have been a big clue. Generally 9 year olds and adults aren't looking for the same things in a product of this type. This is a cute program but all of it is freely available on the Web.

My two biggest disappointments were the brief simplistic definitions and that it lacks cross-referencing or hyper-linking within a definition, -- yes, you can easily jump to new definitions from words within a given definition, but, for me, this lacks the learning that comes with hyper-linking.

My last comment is that as of January 04, the reviews listed under this Medical Dictionary are reviews for other Merriam-Webster products, but not for the Medical Dictionary. Read closely and notice the reference to a thesaurus that the Medical Dictionary does not have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easier than grabbing a heavy hardback
The MW Medical Desk Dictionary's best feature is that it's convenient. It offers you the option to install macros that put an icon on your Word or WordPerfect toolbar that will launch the dictionary. Highlight a word in your document, click the icon, and it will look it up. Type the beginning letters of a word in its search feature, and it will attempt to match what you type with a word in its dictionary. Where it fails is when you don't want that word and it's automatically filled the search box with some other word, so you have to delete the letters that don't apply. Sure, it's easier than grabbing a heavy hardback, and better than the outdated dictionary I had, but its automatic look-up ability needs serious work. I also wish it was a spell-checker plugin rather than an add-on dictionary; you can't tell Word (or any other Office application) that it's a dictionary you're adding in because there is no *.dic file for the program to find to add in. Still, for the money, this is a very good program if what you want is a dictionary and not a spellchecker. ... Read more

This program offers a variety of resumes! Choose what field you are interested in and click on that resume. All you have to do is edit their copy and make it your own. The resumes are very(!) professional. As a first time resume writer, I wanted more advice, tips and ideas (i.e. what kind of paper to use, who to send resumes to- Human Resources, Personnel?). If you have done this whole process before, then I think this is the program for you! It has different formats to really make your resume stand out! ... Read more

Microsoft Word 2000 was designed to be the easiest way to create common Web, e-mail, and print documents around the world. Microsoft Word is currently the application of choice for creating print documents.

Word 2000 embraces HTML as a first-class file format, meaning users can save their documents to HTML with high fidelity--allowing anyone with a Web browser to view the document while still being able to edit it and use all the functionality available in Word. Users can also create compelling, graphically rich Web pages using Themes and HTML functionality, reducing downtime.

A self-repairing functionality searches for missing or corrupted files and repairs them automatically, while antivirus scanners check every new file you open. New ease of use, personalization, and productivity improvements, such as Click-n-Type and Collect and Paste help users get more done in less time. Users can copy up to 12 items onto the Microsoft Office clipboard, then paste each item into any Microsoft Office document multiple times and in any order. Amazon.com Review

Regardless of its primary function, every computer should have a fewbasic software necessities: a word processor, an antivirus program, aspreadsheet application, and perhaps a photo editor. WordPerfect Family Pack 3provides all of those essentials plus a bevy of other programs. Its cornucopiaof software includes full versions of WordPerfect 9, Quattro Pro 9, McAfeeVirusScan 5.0, Corel Photo House 5, Corel Print House 5, Compton's InteractiveWorld Atlas, CYBERsitter 2001, and Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 11.

This bigfour-CD package includes everything an Internet-capable family computer needs.WordPerfect is a top-tier, fully functional word processor; Quattro Pro is anefficient spreadsheet application; and Photo House is a feature-rich,user-friendly image editor. Most of the other applications are similarlypraiseworthy. The hefty manual and comprehensive online help system makemastering any of the programs relatively easy. The only determent to gettingstarted is the installation, which can be a chore due to the number of appsincluded.

With Family Pack 3, Corel takes a great step to ensuring userfriendliness: a central task manager contains wizards and templates to helpusers accomplish scores of common projects. Whether you're creating to-do lists, household budgets, or finding online weather reports, the task manager worksseamlessly with the included applications. However, if you'd rather leap rightinto the main applications, users can always bypass the manager.

This newversion of WordPerfect Family Pack includes several thoughtful improvements overits predecessors. The last pack didn't include VirusScan, which is one of thefinest antivirus programs available. Families with young children willappreciate the Internet filter CYBERsitter, a configurable, password-protectedfilter that blocks access to Web sites and e-mail with objectionable content.Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing offers a friendly, classroom-style environment, designed to transform users into efficient, speedy keyboard jockeys.

TheFamily Pack only includes one dud. Compton's Interactive World Atlas is adisappointment, especially since it replaces the superior Compton's InteractiveEncyclopedia 2000 Standard from the previous Family Pack. The so-called atlascontains only limited information on a few cities worldwide, low-qualitymultimedia clips of general topics, and a few other odds and ends.

One badapple doesn't spoil this bunch, though. WordPerfect Family Pack 3 is a powerfuland astonishingly cost effective suite of software, some of which is mandatoryand some just useful. --Joel Durham, Jr. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All of the World is Divided into Three Parts
All of the world is divided into three parts, Microsoft Word users, WordPerfect users and non-computer users. Being in the WordPerfect camp, I feel somewhat compelled to attempt to convert the Word crowd. If you are using Word, and you don't require all the "prodding whether you want it or not" that the Word program provides for formatting, spelling, etc., then WordPerfect is really something you should try and the Family Pack 3 is a nice way to go. As compared to Word, WordPerfect is a "cleaner" word processing program and is easier to use. All the tools are there, spell check, formatting and grammar help, they're just not as intrusive as they are in Word. I also prefer Quattro Pro, the spreadsheet program over Microsoft's Excel. When Quattro Pro was first introduced by Borland (a long time ago!) it was hands down better than Excel in graphing and analysis. While Excel has narrowed the gap, Quattro Pro still leads the way. This is a strong package at a very attractive price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Forgot the difficult Address Book
As I said before it is great - BUT - to address an envelope is now difficult - in WordPerfect 6 it was easy. So far (about 1 week) I haven't been able to figure it out. But it still beats Word 2002 by a mile, which, "in a Word" stinks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure beat MS Word
After paying [the money] for the Office XP "Upgrade", which included Word 2002, I was very disappointed. The upgraded Access and Excel didn't have very much new to offer. After using WordPerfect 6 for sometime, I thought the "latest" Word would be a vast improvement. It isn't. To add a caption to a picture is just about impossible. The two just won't stay together - I finally found a horribly round-about means of doing it, but it didn't look good and I finally gave up. Don't believe what is in the manual or what is "taught" in other manuals.
So, I purchased the WordPerfect Family Pack 3 for [price]minus a [price] rebate. Could anything this cheap be good?? Well, it is head and shoulders over Word. The MS software creators should be ashamed! Adding a caption (which sticks with the photo/image) is simple and quick. To look at the hidden nuances of a paragraph is easy and complete. If you use Word now, buy this one. It won't be long before you recognize the superiority of WordPerfect 9!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars WordPerfect 9
I would have rated it with 5 stars but it didn't have the address book that the earlier versions have. That is my complaint for this version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Word Perfect Is Word Is Not
I started my college career, using Apple, and it was fine. Then the college switched to Word Perfect and Word. I tried both and fell in love with Word Perfect because I found it to be exactly suited to my needs. Recently, my computer was upgraded and I lost my Word Perfect. I was forced to use Word. I HATE IT, especially that stupid sun wanting to help me type a letter. I am an accomplished typist,(90WPM for the last 40+ years). I don't want Word or its templates. I want what Word Perfect allows me to do--type my manuscripts, quickly and efficiently without over-riding my typing decisions. A friend recently said Word was invented for people who either couldn't type or couldn't format. That's fine for them. But for the rest of us, thank goodness WordPerfect is still around, because we much prefer the ease of using the Word Perfect processing system. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

While it won't replace the desktop computer any time soon, the handheld PDA is catching up and is becoming rather indispensable. Documents To Go 4.0 Professional makes several popular document formats easily portable and even allows basic editing on the run. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files synch between PDA and multiple computers quickly and completely, and can be viewed on the Palm screen with surprising readability. Users can edit Word and Excel files, though the range of editing options is necessarily more limited than on desktop machines, and some files (especially complex Word documents) are tough to work with.

Installation is pretty simple; like all Palm software, there are several steps, but most users should find themselves synching files shortly. The interface is nearly transparent and the coders took pains to reproduce the look and feel of Microsoft Office. The Acrobat reader is a nice feature, even if the images are stripped to save memory. Despite this, RAM will be a problem for some users, who will undoubtedly have to make some tough decisions about which files to keep on the Palm.

Minor memory and editing problems aside, Documents To Go 4.0 Professional makes on-the-run synching and file-fixing a snap. And while the PDA won't replace the desktop machine anytime soon, the laptop better watch out. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Upgraded to latest Documents to Go 4 including Add-on kit last week. Have always been impressed with the main product, but the add-on kit is excellent. The mail sync (we use Lotus Notes) and the handling of attachments on my Palm M505 is the best I have tried - smooth, reliable, hassle free, straightforward to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not up to snuff anymore
This was the coolest thing I loaded on my Palm after I first got it from amazon. But I later discovered that far better solutions exist on the market from other companys like bluenomad software and cutting edge software. Since my copy was free, it wasn't bad, but noone should spend any money on this product when such great alternatives as quickoffice and wordsmith are available for much less money and have much better features. There is no real formatting in the word processor, you can't set the font, the spreadsheet frequently looses information, and stuff.
But for first time users, it is a nice way to see what the Palm can do I think.
Eddie

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes your PDA useful.
This software renders your Palm Pilot far more useful. You can deal with text documents and spreadsheets on your PDA with this.

A must have item.

5-0 out of 5 stars Documents to Go
Will you be making a version to go on the Jonarda 720 hand helds? I had it on my palms and loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Print Word Documents Directly to IR Capable Printers
As a heavy word processing user on my Palm via Documents to Go (please see my reviews for Docs To Go 3.0 elsewhere on Amazon), I was happy to upgrade to the newest version, 4.0, as soon as it came out.

I was even happier to discover (after visiting the DataViz website) that accessory programs -- Docs To Print and IR Print, both available from doctoprint.irprint.com -- would enable me to print MS Word documents from my Palm directly to any number of IR (infrared) capable printers from HP, Canon and Sipix (with no PC or cables necessary).

I now own a HP DeskJet 990Cse, Canon BJC-55 and Sipix A6 printer, all of which allow me to print directly from my Palm, the latter two of which are portable.

I carry the little Sipix A6 printer (which uses A6 size thermal paper) in my briefcase. I take the Canon BJC-55 (ink jet, letter size) printer with me on business trips. And I've placed a second HP DeskJet 990Cse printer elsewhere in my house where I print from my Palm -- without the use of a PC.

As we all know, with its relatively small screen, performing word processing on one's Palm can sometimes be difficult. Being able to print a hard copy -- anywhere you might need it -- is thus truly a godsend.

With Docs To Go 4.0 (and Docs To Print and IR Print), and with the IR capable printers listed above, I can now word process -- and print -- anywhere in my house (or the world) from my Palm. (No PC required.)

Isn't life wonderful? ... Read more
