Lotus123 v5.0 -the finance office's best program
I have been using Lotus123 since the 1970's. I started with Apple's Visicalc, and then was introduced to Lotus' Symphony program. Wow! There was almost nothing that could not be done with this program - Spreadsheet, documents, charts, even database (which I never learned how to do well). But, like most good things, Symphony died a slow death as Lotus continued to improve their basic program - 123.

The biggest competition for Lotus turned out to be Microsoft's Excel. Excellent program that mirrors Lotus123 in many ways. I believe it's popularity came to being because it was sold as a package with Microsoft, not because it was superior to Lotus.

I found lotus to be fast. I still use a the back-slash key for many functions rather than using the mouse. Using it in combination with the mouse really makes my computer smoke. People who are only beginning to use Lotus find that I sometimes am not a good teacher because they watch the screen, and my hands move so fast they don't know what I did (they were waiting for the mouse pointer to show them).

I also find the printing aspects of Lotus to be far superior to Excel for ease in using. One window, and all your printing commands are there. Excel you have to use two or more windows many times to set up fixed rows and/or columns.

Well, I have rambled enough about how I feel about the greatest gift to finance since the red pencil - Lotus 123. If you have any doubts about this program, email me. Over 20 years of using it and I still consider myself a novice. An advanced novice, but none-the-less a novice. Thank you for letting me review Lotus, and I hope this will convince you that if you do anything related to finance, you can't do better than Lotus 123. ... Read more

Useful features added, little goodies too
I won't beat around the bush: I love Excel, and I've loved it ever since I began using it years ago (after having used VisiCalc on an Osborne, what's not to like about Excel?). The Excel 2000 upgrade is a very welcome improvement for me.

Installation was (as usual with MS products) a breeze, and I've encountered no glitches yet. Prior Excel data loads just fine, and there's an option to save new work in dual format so you can still share data with those using prior versions.

I particularly like the increased functionality and ease of PivotTables, and the PivotChart feature (which lets you display PivotTable data graphically) is just great. There are a lot of little improvements, too, such as more chart options, better web/HTML integration, format fill when auto-filling a series, and the ability to use Excel 2000 as a front-end for OLAP sources (hooray -- no more using a third-party app to get data for Excel!).

So, having said how much I love it, I can also say that you could probably live without the upgrade if you don't *need* these improvements. The rest of the people with whom I work still do just fine with Excel 97, and probably will for some time. I do a lot of database and web operations, so the increased capabilities will make life easier for me, but probably wouldn't do much for them.

Still, there are lots of other little improvements and goodies in the upgrade, and I highly recommend it. ... Read more

While it won't replace the desktop computer any time soon, the handheld PDA is catching up and is becoming rather indispensable. Documents To Go 4.0 Professional makes several popular document formats easily portable and even allows basic editing on the run. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files synch between PDA and multiple computers quickly and completely, and can be viewed on the Palm screen with surprising readability. Users can edit Word and Excel files, though the range of editing options is necessarily more limited than on desktop machines, and some files (especially complex Word documents) are tough to work with.

Installation is pretty simple; like all Palm software, there are several steps, but most users should find themselves synching files shortly. The interface is nearly transparent and the coders took pains to reproduce the look and feel of Microsoft Office. The Acrobat reader is a nice feature, even if the images are stripped to save memory. Despite this, RAM will be a problem for some users, who will undoubtedly have to make some tough decisions about which files to keep on the Palm.

Minor memory and editing problems aside, Documents To Go 4.0 Professional makes on-the-run synching and file-fixing a snap. And while the PDA won't replace the desktop machine anytime soon, the laptop better watch out. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

Excellent!
Upgraded to latest Documents to Go 4 including Add-on kit last week. Have always been impressed with the main product, but the add-on kit is excellent. The mail sync (we use Lotus Notes) and the handling of attachments on my Palm M505 is the best I have tried - smooth, reliable, hassle free, straightforward to use.

Not up to snuff anymore
This was the coolest thing I loaded on my Palm after I first got it from amazon. But I later discovered that far better solutions exist on the market from other companys like bluenomad software and cutting edge software. Since my copy was free, it wasn't bad, but noone should spend any money on this product when such great alternatives as quickoffice and wordsmith are available for much less money and have much better features. There is no real formatting in the word processor, you can't set the font, the spreadsheet frequently looses information, and stuff.
But for first time users, it is a nice way to see what the Palm can do I think.

This software renders your Palm Pilot far more useful. You can deal with text documents and spreadsheets on your PDA with this.

Will you be making a version to go on the Jonarda 720 hand helds? I had it on my palms and loved it.

Print Word Documents Directly to IR Capable Printers
As a heavy word processing user on my Palm via Documents to Go (please see my reviews for Docs To Go 3.0 elsewhere on Amazon), I was happy to upgrade to the newest version, 4.0, as soon as it came out.

I was even happier to discover (after visiting the DataViz website) that accessory programs -- Docs To Print and IR Print, both available from doctoprint.irprint.com -- would enable me to print MS Word documents from my Palm directly to any number of IR (infrared) capable printers from HP, Canon and Sipix (with no PC or cables necessary).

I now own a HP DeskJet 990Cse, Canon BJC-55 and Sipix A6 printer, all of which allow me to print directly from my Palm, the latter two of which are portable.

I carry the little Sipix A6 printer (which uses A6 size thermal paper) in my briefcase. I take the Canon BJC-55 (ink jet, letter size) printer with me on business trips. And I've placed a second HP DeskJet 990Cse printer elsewhere in my house where I print from my Palm -- without the use of a PC.

As we all know, with its relatively small screen, performing word processing on one's Palm can sometimes be difficult. Being able to print a hard copy -- anywhere you might need it -- is thus truly a godsend.

With Docs To Go 4.0 (and Docs To Print and IR Print), and with the IR capable printers listed above, I can now word process -- and print -- anywhere in my house (or the world) from my Palm. (No PC required.)
