Lotus 1-2-3 is a mature spreadsheet application, capable of performing complicated calculations on arrays of numbers. Its considerable library of built-in functions can help you perform financial, statistical, engineering, and table-lookup tasks, as well as some text-processing jobs (such as substring searching) that other spreadsheets' function libraries can't do. The program also features some integration with IBM ViaVoice voice-editing technology--you can do certain data-entry tasks simply, without typing.

Lotus 1-2-3 also ships with an assortment of SmartMaster templates, designed for easy creation of sales plans, expense reports, and other common number-centric documents. The function library and generally slicker interface of Lotus 1-2-3 are better than those of Microsoft Excel, but Excel's PivotTable and auditing features aren't matched here.

The neatest new feature in this release of Lotus 1-2-3 is called Web Tables. Web Tables allow you to establish a link to a resource on the Internet--a page of stock quotes, say--and then make reference to that data in your calculations. You can configure your Web Tables so they're updated automatically, or only on your command. It's a neat feature, but in most cases you end up downloading a lot of garbage with the numbers you want, and figuring out a way to parse the information is a challenge. Still, it's nice to see a way, even a crude one, to establish a near-live link to Web data. Web Tables make your calculations that much more current. --David Wall

Great software, but.....
It is a great product. Will match it's weight in gold with Microsoft Office. There are quite a few bugs in the Lotus Organizer software. For example, some of the dates you input in the 'To do' list, and in the 'alarm', do not remain as inputed. It changes to some default date on it's own. The Lotus web site offers close to nothing for fixing the bugs. If you compare the convenience offered by Microsoft web sites for any Microsoft product to fix bugs, where the site identifies what fix is good for you, Lotus web site is right out of the stone age. Time, time, time
It's incompatible with my MacLinkPlus; everything must become Appleworks 5 before it can then be translated into AW6 and the same thing works in reverse. I can't cut & past text from my old fave WordPerfect for Mac. And it's the slowest somemabitch, at least in iMac X+, that I've ever had the impatience to work with. Spinning wheel: working, working, working, all right already: finish working! It's basically sound, but I can't call up the usually codes to see what is really going on, as I could with WordPerfect. Its translation to html is a nice attempt but full of hesitancies, mistranslations, & that goddamned eternal spinning wheel: processeing, processing. I really think I *could* like this word process if they fixed up the speed, efficiency, & translatability, & added the "seeing within" features I like. [I had hoped WordPerfect would make something for Mac X+, but they say no.]

MS Excel for Mac OS X upgrade
Microsoft's strength is in the department of "bells and whistles".
This makes their products somewhat complicated to learn and use and takes up lots of memory. I did like some features, for example, the notes for a field showing up in a little balloon that can be viewed without having to open a new window, as in an earlier version.
I had some difficulties with the installation but was talked through the procedure by a very patient tech.
In order to install any one item of the "Office" suite you must install many Megabytes of other stuff that you don't need, but you can trash much of that later.
Customizing the toolbar is a rather difficult and tedious process, especially when you cannot see the function of a tool ,unless you are in the mode in which you cannot trash it.
But overall, once you get it all set up, it does what it is supposed to do , even though the average user will never use most of the many functions. ... Read more
