Amazon.com Review As is often the case with enterprise solutions, this product consists of two separate applications. The core package, Crystal Reports 8.5 Developer, is for accessing the contents of database tables and generating reports based on their contents. Wizards make this process extremely easy. You just specify the database you want to operate on, which can be local or accessible via an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) link. Having done that, you can choose the tables and fields you want to extract values from. The wizards make it easy to specify which fields should serve as headers, and simplify the process of doing calculations on extracted values. In a report on the monthly sales of a multinational chain of stores, for example, you could group individual stores' sales figures by country, and calculate total sales figures for each country and for the chain as a whole. Wizards also handle formatting, so it's pretty easy to get neat-looking reports customized with your organizational logo. Wizards aren't limited to tabular reports: you can use them to generate reports that reveal details in response to clicks (so-called drill-down reports) and personalized form letters for mass mailings. Going beyond the wizards, Crystal Reports 8.5 Developer offers a tool for visually creating joins among tables (by which you can consolidate the fields in multiple tables into a single report). It also makes it relatively easy to build SQL queries, mostly by exchanging syntax memorization in favor of a logically organized set of expandable trees from which you choose the commands you want. With SQL queries, you can do things like find the maximum value in a field across many records, or perform complicated text-searches on the contents of text fields. Managers and others who have been taught to revere database queries as a black art known only to database administrators will be delighted by the ease with which they can create reports to support their business decisions. The other product in this package is Crystal Enterprise 8, which is capable of taking report documents from Crystal Reports and distilling them into publications that it then serves to network users. There are several ways to go about preparing reports for network publication, the simplest being nearly automatic conversion of Crystal Reports documents into Dynamic HTML (DHTML) files that standard Web browsers can read. With a little more work, Crystal Enterprise will serve reports in streaming form--meaning they're updated dynamically as their underlying data changes. It'll also generate Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files, as well as reports delimited by Extensible Markup Language (XML) tags. The XML feature is especially cool, because it means you can use Crystal Enterprise as an engine for generating business documents (such as invoices and purchase orders) that are fed to business partners via an XML-based information-exchange system, such as Microsoft BizTalk Server. Because it's easy to use and flexible in its output, Crystal Reports 8.5 Developer Edition belongs in the toolkit of anyone who's responsible for sharing complicated information--especially numerical information--with others via a network. --David Wall Reviews (5)
It's unfortunate that there is no similar competitive product available. Otherwise, this product would be yesterday's toast. Your report info is stored in a binary file. It's a nightmare in there. Plus, unexpected and inexplicable random corruption of the binary destroys a great deal of work. Back up often. Installation procedure: poor
There are several annoying problems with it: 2. The table linker is nice, but it is more primative than the one in Microsoft Access. For example, if I'm joining three fields from table "foo" to table "bar," and I make one of those joins a "right join" then the others two parts of the table join should default to this. They don't and it errors out. I feel the tool could be easier to use. 3. On several occasios the query tool got hopelessly confused. It was often easier to write a custom view or macro query on SQL Server (or Oracle) than it was to use the reporting front end. The problem I have with this is it makes my particular installation harder to do because in addition to just shipping a standalone report, I have to ship a SQL query. I wish there were a way for me to reliably tell it "I KNOW what I'm doing... ust send the query as I've typed it to the database." 4. Occasionally when a query had problems with it and I attempted to preview the report, it would go into "infinite loop" mode. The only way out of this was to use Windows to "kill" the program. Quite frequently, I'd have crw32.exe just crash on its own when accessing a SQL database. ... Read more

When I got it home and looked up some reviews I was disappointed at what people were saying. I wondered if I should just return it. But it said on the box there was a 30 day money-back guarantee, so I figured I'd give it a chance.... Turns out, it's great! I honestly don't know why the other reviewers have had difficulties with it. I'm running Win XP Pro and this software has never once failed or locked up my computer. I also find it more intuitive and easier to use than Quick Books. What I like about this as opposed to QB (which I've used in the past) is that it is much easier to customize the design and layout of your templates. My invoices are far nicer looking now than they ever were with QB. I can also print aging reports and graphs in seconds. Don't get me wrong, Quick Books is a great program and it does have many added features. But if all you need is basic invoicing, accounting, and reports, like me, and you'd rather spend $40 than $300, I would recommend Invoices & Estimates Pro.
Setup was very easy, and I found the software to be very intuitive and MUCH more easier to learn than my previous software. I've had no problems with it so far and i'm using it on a Pentium II 400mhz with 64mb of RAM. Just the included extras (500 letters, 8000 graphics and 300 fonts) are worth the price they're asking for the package. For me, it was an incredible bargain. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review After installing Quicken Lawyer 2003 Business, you can choose to brush up on your "legalese" or jump right into the program. The Quicken Lawyer 2003 Business library contains reading material on starting and running a small business, legal forms for small businesses, an employer's legal handbook, marketing without advertising, and leasing space for a small business. You can also link to Web sites like Nolo.com's Small Business Law Center and Quicken.com's Small Business Center. Quicken Lawyer 2003 Business includes a wide variety of business document templates, including documents for hiring, buying and selling real estate or goods and equipment, borrowing money, renting office space, contracts, and more. Titles of documents contained within the program include Amendment to Contract (General), Assignment of Lease, Bill of Sale for Business Assets, Confidentiality Agreement, Consent of Directors, Corporate Bylaws, and many more. New features in the 2003 version include a new interface redesigned to be easier to use, interactive forms using an interview format, Web updates to make sure you have the most recent version of the program, and a new book, Leasing Space for Your Small Business, by Fred Steingold and Janet Portman. All Quicken Lawyer programs do advise that you consult an expert on sensitive matters such as these. When you print out any documents, they include the following language: "No general form is a substitute for personalized advice from a knowledgeable lawyer licensed to practice law in your state." With this in mind, Quicken Lawyer 2003 Business can help you do some of your own initial work and cut down on attorney's fees. --Kendra Hayden Reviews (16)

QLP is published by Nolo Press, a well established publisher of self-help legal books. QLP begins by walking you through a number of typical life-stage situations (i.e. young w/ no kids, married w/ kids, etc.) and comes up with a list of suggested documents and along the way explains why you might need each of these documents. When creating a particular document, the software writes all of the legal language for you - you do not write a single word of legalese - and docs are tailored to each state's requirements. To get information from you and have you make decisions about the content/structure of your documents, QLP follows the typical "interview" format - easy to use and informative along the way. My wife and I each created wills, healthcare directives and powers of attorney in about an hour or two. PROS: QLP is primarily estate planning software. It has a few of the most important ancillary documents (Child Care Agreement, Limited POA for Finances), but Kiplinger's Home Attorney and Broderbund's Family Attorney have a full complement of general use form documents. However, if you look through these lists, most are either not really necessary (Trip Permission Slip you can write yourself on scrap of paper or school gives it to you) or are better left to professionals unless you know exactly what you are doing (i.e. residential real estate sales contract and home services contract - too much legalese in there to just print, drop your name in and sign!?). COMPETITORS: As mentioned above, Kiplinger's Home Attorney and Broderbund's Family Attorney have a more extensive list of docs (many of which you'll never need IMHO). Home Attorney came preloaded on my computer so had a chance to try it -- not nearly as user friendly, kind of clunky and actually makes you edit the document to enter your name, county, etc - this scares me. Don't have Family Attorney so can't comment on its ease of use, sorry. If you really need a ton of general use forms, get Home Attorney or Family Attorney - otherwise stick with Quicken. GET A LAWYER IF: While QLP functions well as an advisor, telling you when you might need certain documents or even specific provisions within documents, it has its limits and is candid enough to admit it during the interviews/tutorials. Get a lawyer for situations like: you expect to owe federal estate taxes ($1.5 million limit in 2003 and going up rapidly), you own a small business or you expect to have a messy family situation upon death (i.e. an ex-spouse or children that don't get along) or live in a community property state.
While, yes, I'm sure that legal things do change, they do not change that much, and I find it reprehensible that Nolo has revoked patches they had previously made available. Imagine any other manufacturer doing that -- "sorry, Office 2000 is no longer supported, so you can't download the patches we previously made available to you. Either use Office 2000 with none of the bugs corrected, or pay $400 for Office 2003." Ridiculous. So, while I did like the software, the lack of any longer-term support is a real turn-off for me. ... Amazon.com Review Quicken Lawyer 2003 Personal has several different help features to assist the user in need. There is a guide on the right side of every interview screen to help you as you work through each document. Quicken Lawyer Onscreen, a built-in reference guide, consists of the legal manual and a user's guide. Included is a glossary, which puts all the "legalese" into plain English for the everyday user. Finally, Quicken Lawyer 2003 Personal provides extensive resources and support on the Web for the user who might not find what they are looking for within the program. Quicken Lawyer 2003 Personal contains many different documents you can produce yourself. Some document titles include: Will, Living Trust-Basic Trust, Healthcare Directive, Durable Power of Attorney for Finances, and Child Care Agreement. New documents in the 2003 version include: Information for Caregivers and Survivors, Notice to Put Name on Do Not Call List, and General Bill of Sale for Personal Property. It's important to remember that any legal documents must be carefully considered before being relied upon to suit your needs and carry out your wishes. Most of the documents come with a disclaimer stating that if you want advice geared toward your specific situation, you should consult an expert. Still, for home users, Quicken Lawyer 2003 Personal should fulfill many basic legal needs. --Kendra Hayden Reviews (16)
