Amazon.co.uk The interface for LapLink Gold could not be simpler to use. Everything is available in the LapLink application window, from permissions administration to drag-and-drop file transfers. Various connection options are provided so you can reach other computers through your LAN, over a modem connection, through the Internet, or over a direct cable connection. If you are deciding how to allow employees of a small business to connect to the company network from home or other remote locations, this is an easy and relatively inexpensive solution. The LinkToNet option lets you create a dialup link or a secure connection over the Internet to reach your office network. Once connected to the network, almost everything that would be available in the office will be available from the remote location, including the Internet, intranet, office printers, and other network devices. Along with the application disks, the box contains three different cables that let you connect any two Windows-based computers (Windows 95 and later) without a network card. You can use the included cables to connect two computers via serial, parallel, or USB ports. Through this network you've created you can also set up Internet connection sharing and other network tools in your Windows system. --Elizabeth Wall Reviews (8)
AND they have a Surfup web service so i can access files VIA A WEB BROWSER from anywhere ! Beat THAT ! It's simple, it works, I love it.
Remote control works fine, even over lousy 20K connections, and the "speedsync" feature makes it practical to transfer files in bulk over standard phone lines. I routinely use it to make "service calls" without leaving my desk, and to perform periodic incremental backups of remote computers. The software's actually overkill for simple "same room" file transfers on Win 9x+ systems, but for a complete remote access package, this is hard to beat.
I have a Compaq Armada Pentium 1590DMT (150 mHz) laptop with 80 MB RAM, and my desktop is an AMD-K6-2 (350 mHz)with 64 MB RAM. Both machines have the Windows ME operating system. They link together with no problem at all using LapLink. I use the parallel ports for the link. I've never had a problem, and the application works exactly as advertised. That's all you can ask of a product. Joseph H. Pierre

Amazon.com Review PCsync does its file update magic through an interface that makes Microsoft Briefcase look as primitive as an abacus. Once you've installed PCsync on a pair of computers, it's a simple matter to share them, connect them, and select files and folders that you wish to synchronize. PCsync will look at the file dates and ensure that each computer is updated with the latest version of the files you selected. If there are conflicts--files with the same name, for example--PCsync lets you know so you can decide whether to overwrite them. That way, files that you might need to revert to won't be accidentally deleted. File synchronization is only one of PCsync's tricks. Another one--and possibly its coolest--is its PC migration assistant. Suppose you've purchased a brand-new PC, but you've been using your old PC for five years and it's overstuffed with files, applications, and settings that you really wish you could move to your new computer with ease. PCsync does this with surprising ease and grace, walking users through the process via a wizard and even bridging different versions of Windows. We were able to migrate several applications, Start Menu settings, desktop settings, and other bits of personalization from a Windows 98 PC to a newly set-up Windows XP computer without hassle. The only disappointment is actually a frivolity: PCsync includes a module called MusicMover, a special music applet that lets you organize, catalog, and transfer between PCs and even play MP3s. We found this module's interface to be lacking in intuitiveness and, for some reason, it had a terrible time searching our hard disks for MP3 files. MusicMover's shortcomings aren't enough to detract from PCsync 3.0's otherwise outstanding, simple, and convenient feature set. If you're purchasing a new computer and you're not sure how to get all your old stuff onto it, or if you use a laptop and a desktop simultaneously and need an easy way to keep your files in order, you'll love PCsync. --Joel Durham, Jr. Reviews (12)
Plus, you can only access tech support via chat, so every time you reboot you lose them. Annoying. Bottom line -- PCSync is at best way too complicated for a consumer product. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review Installing PCsync takes a few steps. You might be required to install JavaVirtual Machine (included on the CD-ROM) if it's not installed already.Additionally, to use the USB cable that comes with the product (it alsoincludesa serial cable for transfers involving older systems), you need to install theUSB drivers as well. But after a couple of reboots, we had our systems--oneusing Windows Me and one using Windows 2000--hooked up and ready to go. PCsync uses a split screen that lets you browse the contents of both PCs usingeither system. File transfer is as simple as drag and drop from one window tothe other--you can also use right-click menus to send files from one system tothe other. Using USB to transfer files is a boon to any user who has everwatched files drag their way from one system to another via a serial cable.Whencopying large files, we were able to get sustained transfer rates of more than400 KB per second--it took only nine seconds to transfer a 4 MB file. PCsyncalso supports many Internet storage sites, letting you easily transfer filesbetween your system and the online drives. PCsync includes a Copy My Files wizard, which walks you through the steps oftransferring all your documents and data files from one system to another. Forexample, if you purchase a new PC, you can install PCsync on both systems, hookthem up, and then use this wizard to update the new one with all your personalfiles from your older system. And for those users planning to keep bothsystemshooked up, PCsync's SmartXchange feature synchronizes folders on both PCs,automatically keeping the same file versions in each. We would have liked to see better documentation with PCsync--all the helpfileswere on the CD-ROM, with only a skeletal installation and user's guide printedon the CD jacket. But the software does a slick job of attacking what canoftenbe a monumental task--after we made our way through the installation process, file transfers were never easier. --J. Curtis Reviews (7)
I have been a LapLink user for many years, but that product has grown so much with features that I don't need (and grown in price), that I had decided to stick with the old version. When PCsync came along I jumped at the opportunity for the faster USB transfers.. but it is not to be. I'm back in the old version, which remains virtually flawless. I have to say, the company responded to my e-mail enquiries and the product has an excellent satisfaction guaranteed policy: 100 days, 100% satisfaction, 100% money back. Waiting for version 2.0 ... How did I reach this point? I was enticed by how easy and useful it was to sync my Handspring Visor with the computer. I bought it hoping my laptop and my desktop would become the best of friends. I installed it on one computer with WindowsME and AOL5.0, and it was easy. I attempted to install it on another desktop with Windows98and AOL6.0, and although the installation was easy, it always created GPFs when I tried to run PCSync. In consultation with customer support, I've installed this (with their ministrations and suggestions) a lot of times now (more than 10), and still have yet to get it to work one the Windows 98 computer. Customer service was notable for the following: I contacted PCSync, and left copious messages on the board they run to offer customer service. To make a long story short, customer service 1) oftentimes did not answer my postings on the board. 2) had a _long_ wait time in excess of 20 minutes when I called them long distance on multiple occaisions 3) before I was ready or willing, closed my account on the board, without giving me a definitive solution. Note well: my tone, both in writing and in voice, was consistent with this message. To be fair, at this writing, they say they will "have a senior technician get back with you" when they have a solution, but their reticence at communication so far. . . Well, you can figure it out from there. Nope, although there are other products out there that work and work well, this is not one of them. Take your hard earned money, register Winzip, and transfer your data files via another route. It's cheaper, quicker, and, unlike with this product, predictable. I do hope that someone out there gives due consideration to synchronization between palmtops, laptops, and desktops. If someone can come up with "universal synchronization" between these three devices, they will be rich. Documents to Go, also available via Amazon, does it between a computer and a palmtop, and some programs try to do it between a desktop and a laptop, but, whoever does it between a laptop, desktop, and palmtop, will fill a niche that ever increases in an increasingly mobile computing world. Best wishes from Edmund5169

Amazon.com Product Description PDAsync uses LapLink's Rapid Transfer Technology to deliver incredibly fast synchronization rates, and, after initial synchronization, the program sends only your changes, saving you time. Its auto detect tool enables automatic synchronization whenever you connect your mobile device to your PC. PDAsync supports Palm, Windows CE, Pocket PC, and Casio personal organizer devices, and it's compatible with Outlook, Lotus Notes, Lotus Organizer, and ACT! software. Along with English, PDAsync supports Spanish, French, German, and Italian. Reviews (7)
It may install and work great for others, but for some reason it has been a complete waste of (too much) time for me!
PDAsync 1. Allows direct sync between the Palm Desktop and Lotus Notes (not supported in Intellisync). 2. Allows you to switch synchronization targets (does not work in Intellisync. Their tech support says you can't do that). For me this is a basic requirement. 3. Is half the price of Intellisync. The interface is a litle puzzling at first. But after you "get it", the product is easy to use.
For tech support, you are permitted one "free" telephone call, then you must pay a price... per incident/call (one call is approx. the cost of the entire program!). Don't try to e-mail them either. They won't accept e-mails without first filling out their form, complete with a serial number. Of course, they don't send out a serial number when you download the product directly from them ... even after purchasing it. So far, not only has this product cost me money, but it has cost me lots of time. Trust me on this one, pay a few more bucks and get Intellisync or Companionlink. There is a definite reason why both Laplink Inc. and PDAsync rhyme with "stink". They are both rotten. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review At its core, PCsync is simply a utility that allows users to transfer files via a network connection, using the included serial and USB cables, or over the Internet. To this end, the product is fantastic. PCsync's USB cable transfers files at more than 5 Mbps, compared to a typical LAN's throughput of about 1 Mbps. In addition to the core application, LapLink also includes a suite of additional utilities that, while they aren't nearly as useful as the basic application, give the product added value. PCMover is fantastic for people who are constantly building new computers with the same applications. Once the new system is built and the applications installed, PCMover updates the applications on the new computer with the settings from the older machine. SmartXchange is a way to ensure that files and folders that are shared between two computers are always in sync. MusicMover is LapLink's attempt to ride the MP3 wave that everyone is so convinced is the Internet's next cash cow. While it isn't a fantastic method for finding MP3s on the Internet, it will work as a classic peer-to-peer method for sharing files with other PCsync users. However, keep in mind that these sharing relations need to be set up manually. Aside from its core usage--as a simple file transfer utility between two or more computers--another of PCsync's other useful applications is one called Surf Up. A truly brilliant application, Surf Up allows users running PCsync to access their shared folders from any networked computer, using any Web browser. This function is invaluable for people who occasionally work from home and need access to files on a work computer. While PCsync is a fantastic tool once you get it up and running, we did run into some technical issues during the installation. Installing it on our laptop and home computers was a breeze. However, because PCsync's network settings conflicted with our company's network settings, we had to uninstall and then reinstall PCsync and completely reconfigure our desktop computer's network settings in order to get started. If you're in the market for a good file transfer application from a reputable company, we're hard pressed not to recommend PCsync. Just be aware, however, that getting PCsync's network settings to live in peace with your computer's network settings may take some work. --William O'Neal Reviews (11)
I thought that would be all that I would use this product for - and I considered that a good investment. But after playing with the product, I have learned that I can share files with friends and family all over the world. All they need is an internet browser and they can access my folder. It also has a cool MP3 file manager. I have organized all my MP3 files and created playlists of my favorite songs. I created a playlist of my favorite songs from the good ol' college days and was able to share them with my college buddy, the guy who recommended this product to me. I am sure this product still has much more that I haven't uncovered yet - but for now it far exceeds my expectations!
For example, as a result of my loading PCSync onto my computer, it won't shut down all the way. I must now manually shut it off. I attempted to rectify this situation but found that the technical support folks at PCsync/Laplink are the absolute worst. They have a huge attitude and are very bitter. And to add insult to injury, they don't seem to have very much knowledge in regard to the product. It goes without saying that they were unable to rectify the shutdown issue. If you don't mind the inconvenience of the shut down issue each time you turn off your computer, then get the product.
However, the product was EXTREMELY slow. It took about 7 HOURS to copy 100MB (by comparison, if you spend the same money on a ZIO plus a 100MB Smart Card, copying 100MB takes less than 15 minutes) Despite downloading new drivers, I could not get it to work faster. In addition, it only worked after rebooting both notebooks and disconnecting my DSL line. Not a practical approach at all. I'd strongly recommend to save the money, get a ZIO (or any other portable disk, as long as it's not a ZIP drive) and run a good old sneakernet. Or, double the money and set-up a home network.
After installing it and trying for hours to figure out what was So, at the suggestion of tech support, I got the upgrade, installed it, and.... it just doesn't work! (Are we seeing a Now, the suggestion is I buy the latest upgrade to 3.0. Do I look that gullible? Try something else. ... Read more
