LapLink Gold is a network tool that can be used for administration and support by IT departments, or as a communications suite for everyone on your network. The application includes remote control, file transfer, text and voice chat, remote printer use, and remote network connection utilities.

The interface for LapLink Gold could not be simpler to use. Everything is available in the LapLink application window, from permissions administration to drag-and-drop file transfers. Various connection options are provided so you can reach other computers through your LAN, over a modem connection, through the Internet, or over a direct cable connection.

If you are deciding how to allow employees of a small business to connect to the company network from home or other remote locations, this is an easy and relatively inexpensive solution. The LinkToNet option lets you create a dialup link or a secure connection over the Internet to reach your office network. Once connected to the network, almost everything that would be available in the office will be available from the remote location, including the Internet, intranet, office printers, and other network devices.

Along with the application disks, the box contains three different cables that let you connect any two Windows-based computers (Windows 95 and later) without a network card. You can use the included cables to connect two computers via serial, parallel, or USB ports. Through this network you've created you can also set up Internet connection sharing and other network tools in your Windows system. --Elizabeth Wall ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best product on the market for remote control and file acces
Not only did I get remote control on an XP box BEHIND A FIREWALL, I can access files remotely from Laplink's Surfup service. Service is the key word here, I don't know any other place offering network services when you buy their off-the-shelf product. Laplink runs an ILS server so I can connect to my Laplink PC from anywhere on the Internet, and they run a firewall service so I can get to my home PC - behind a firewall. It's as easy as checking a box and creating a login-entry.

AND they have a Surfup web service so i can access files VIA A WEB BROWSER from anywhere ! Beat THAT !

It's simple, it works, I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have Laplink versions on several systems now...
and have been using it for years with zero problems.

Remote control works fine, even over lousy 20K connections, and the "speedsync" feature makes it practical to transfer files in bulk over standard phone lines.

I routinely use it to make "service calls" without leaving my desk, and to perform periodic incremental backups of remote computers. The software's actually overkill for simple "same room" file transfers on Win 9x+ systems, but for a complete remote access package, this is hard to beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works for me--that's all I ask!

I have a Compaq Armada Pentium 1590DMT (150 mHz) laptop with 80 MB RAM, and my desktop is an AMD-K6-2 (350 mHz)with 64 MB RAM. Both machines have the Windows ME operating system. They link together with no problem at all using LapLink. I use the parallel ports for the link. I've never had a problem, and the application works exactly as advertised.

That's all you can ask of a product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easiest communications package to use
I had used PCanywhere for a number of years, but find that product to be inferior in its connections. LapLink is very easy to install and use. Had absolutely no problems in transferring files or using remote control.

1-0 out of 5 stars Laplink, the Long Downward Spiral
Laplink was the first to offer travellers dos software to transfer files from laptop to desktop and make backup up disks that were clones of the main hard drive. In addition, the dos version had a batch file function which could be used to backup only selected files. It ran flawlessly. Laplink 2000 and now, Laplink Gold, unfortunately are not worthy successors to the dos version. My experience is with Win98 and Laplink 2000 and Gold seem to have problems with it. The clone folder function causes fatal errors. Attempts to get help from Laplink support have come to naught. They haven't even bothered to answer my last email. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Moving files and settings from one computer to another is what PCsync 3.0 is all about, and it's a terrific product in so many ways. It's incredibly feature packed--one could say the developers even threw in the kitchen "sync." Through its included LapLink serial cable, a parallel-to-parallel link cable, or a USB-to-USB link cable (otherwise known as a LAN), it lets you quickly and easily ensure that both PCs have the latest version of the files of your choice.

PCsync does its file update magic through an interface that makes Microsoft Briefcase look as primitive as an abacus. Once you've installed PCsync on a pair of computers, it's a simple matter to share them, connect them, and select files and folders that you wish to synchronize. PCsync will look at the file dates and ensure that each computer is updated with the latest version of the files you selected. If there are conflicts--files with the same name, for example--PCsync lets you know so you can decide whether to overwrite them. That way, files that you might need to revert to won't be accidentally deleted.

File synchronization is only one of PCsync's tricks. Another one--and possibly its coolest--is its PC migration assistant. Suppose you've purchased a brand-new PC, but you've been using your old PC for five years and it's overstuffed with files, applications, and settings that you really wish you could move to your new computer with ease. PCsync does this with surprising ease and grace, walking users through the process via a wizard and even bridging different versions of Windows. We were able to migrate several applications, Start Menu settings, desktop settings, and other bits of personalization from a Windows 98 PC to a newly set-up Windows XP computer without hassle.

The only disappointment is actually a frivolity: PCsync includes a module called MusicMover, a special music applet that lets you organize, catalog, and transfer between PCs and even play MP3s. We found this module's interface to be lacking in intuitiveness and, for some reason, it had a terrible time searching our hard disks for MP3 files.

MusicMover's shortcomings aren't enough to detract from PCsync 3.0's otherwise outstanding, simple, and convenient feature set. If you're purchasing a new computer and you're not sure how to get all your old stuff onto it, or if you use a laptop and a desktop simultaneously and need an easy way to keep your files in order, you'll love PCsync. --Joel Durham, Jr. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE ANSWER TO ALL MY NEEDS!!!
For the longest time I've been looking for a product that actually does what it promises, and PCsync does just that!
I have an old Windows 98 computer that has all of my family pictures, countless letters, and personal documents on the hard drive, and I've needed to transfer them all over to my new Windows XP laptop. I've seen the LapLink name in the file transfer genre for years, and I thought why not give them a try!
I purchased PCsync 3 at my local computer store, came home and loaded it on both of my computers. I then popped my USB cable into each computer, and before I knew it, I had a copy of all my files on both computers!!!
As if that didn't blow my mind, I played around with the migration wizard a little bit, and I know have all my personalized settings that were on my 98 computer on my XP, all with just a few little clicks of the mouse!!!
It's easy to see why Laplink has been in this game for so long, they're just the best at what they do!
Would I recommend PCsync? YES!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine!
I use this product to synchronize files between my XP laptop and my windows 98 desktop over the house network. I have had no problems although it sometimes show conflicts where none seem to exist. Very helpful. A little difficult perhaps for those with less computer experience to use but otherwise great!

1-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't even make a good doorstop!
I have worked with Laplink 95/3.1 and had a very good experience. So when upgrading my computer and operating program this was a natural to select for file transfer to the new computer. I spent many frustrating hours attempting to make it work. Requests to the on line help generated a reference to an on line article that was of no help. I have given up. This software would not recognize a connection with the provided cable between a Windows 98 Pentium II to a XP Home Edition Pentium IV.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incompatible with XP and USB
Have spent many hours, unsuccessfully, trying to get this product to work on XP with LapLink's USB cable -- the only fast option, the other being a serial connection. Problems include getting scary blue-screen messages which bring down the whole operating system. LapLink was unable to help... Finally had to uninstall the whole thing and at least my PC has recovered.

1-0 out of 5 stars didn't work
I spend several hours with tech support trying to connect a Win XP desktop to a Win 98 laptop and it never worked. I formerly used version 1.52 and it did work, but was squirrelly (and not compatible with XP). Obviously no progress was made with 3.0.

Plus, you can only access tech support via chat, so every time you reboot you lose them. Annoying.

Bottom line -- PCSync is at best way too complicated for a consumer product. ... Read more

The built-in Windows Direct Cable Connection (DCC) tool allows userstohook up two PCs and transfer data between them. But this arcane application isdifficult to get working, even on systems with the same operating systems.LapLink, the company that made a name for itself with its notebookconnectivityproducts, has brought us PCsync, an easier-to-use version of DCC that includesspeedy USB transfers for Windows 98 systems and above.

Installing PCsync takes a few steps. You might be required to install JavaVirtual Machine (included on the CD-ROM) if it's not installed already.Additionally, to use the USB cable that comes with the product (it alsoincludesa serial cable for transfers involving older systems), you need to install theUSB drivers as well. But after a couple of reboots, we had our systems--oneusing Windows Me and one using Windows 2000--hooked up and ready to go.

PCsync uses a split screen that lets you browse the contents of both PCs usingeither system. File transfer is as simple as drag and drop from one window tothe other--you can also use right-click menus to send files from one system tothe other. Using USB to transfer files is a boon to any user who has everwatched files drag their way from one system to another via a serial cable.Whencopying large files, we were able to get sustained transfer rates of more than400 KB per second--it took only nine seconds to transfer a 4 MB file. PCsyncalso supports many Internet storage sites, letting you easily transfer filesbetween your system and the online drives.

PCsync includes a Copy My Files wizard, which walks you through the steps oftransferring all your documents and data files from one system to another. Forexample, if you purchase a new PC, you can install PCsync on both systems, hookthem up, and then use this wizard to update the new one with all your personalfiles from your older system. And for those users planning to keep bothsystemshooked up, PCsync's SmartXchange feature synchronizes folders on both PCs,automatically keeping the same file versions in each.

We would have liked to see better documentation with PCsync--all the helpfileswere on the CD-ROM, with only a skeletal installation and user's guide printedon the CD jacket. But the software does a slick job of attacking what canoftenbe a monumental task--after we made our way through the installation process, file transfers were never easier. --J. Curtis ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to Get Running and Horrible Technical Support
I recently purchased PCSync 2.0. In order to get the software running, it necesitated several calls to LapLink's technical support line. In each case, their representatives were surly and discourteous. When I contacted the manager of technical support, I was told that they would no longer assist me. At that moment it became very clear where the A-OK for the technical support department's behavior stemmed from. In order to run the product takes an extensive amount of reading through manuals and help files. All-in-all PCSync is far too difficult to operate and their technical support problems are insurmountable. Seekers of file transfer software would be better advised to look at another product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date -- Doesn't Work
First of all, there's a PCsync 2.0 which Amazon doesn't offer at this time. Secondly, if you're looking for a product to move files from an old to new computer as I was looking to do, don't bother with this product. Spend your money on a Zip drive or use your CD burner drive to transfer files. The only useful help documents are on the website, there are no manuals and the CD-based help files are of the generic "make sure your computer is on" variety. The USB drivers are installed, the program displays them, but can't connect them -- aaargh!

2-0 out of 5 stars Forget it!!!!
After 2 nights of attempting to get this product to work, I finally attempted to call customer support. I used the online chat feature with a support technician. Instead of giving me the information that I needed, they sent me on a wild goose chase, hunting down tech note after tech note. While I like the idea of online chatting with a support rep, this was far from helpful. One of the most important steps in setting up the connection is to make sure that once you have installed the product on both PC's, you must then share the files. I was never able to find this in the Quick Guide. This should be the first thing that the online support should tell you and not send you chasing after technotes. I was never able to get the transfer working with the USB port, so I had to use the serial port. The program initially indicated that the total transfer would take a little over 3 hours. The time would slowly decrease, only to increase again. The total time indicated never went over 3 1/2 hours. However, the total time that it took to transfer about 750 mg was just under 24 hours. Would I use this again? Only because there really is no other choice when you are trying to move files from one PC to another. I just think that this product could be great, but it has a long way to go.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the next version...
I spent many hours trying to get this to work, but was not successful. I tried all the fixes available on their web site, including downloading a free version upgrade (v1.5). Still no success.

I have been a LapLink user for many years, but that product has grown so much with features that I don't need (and grown in price), that I had decided to stick with the old version.

When PCsync came along I jumped at the opportunity for the faster USB transfers.. but it is not to be. I'm back in the old version, which remains virtually flawless.

I have to say, the company responded to my e-mail enquiries and the product has an excellent satisfaction guaranteed policy: 100 days, 100% satisfaction, 100% money back.

Waiting for version 2.0 ...

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning: Can't say I could get it to work either.
I would consider an alternate product, I am sorry to say. I got this product from Amazon.com, and, although I have not tried to return it yet, only hope I can if I am under 30 days (wish me luck ).

How did I reach this point? I was enticed by how easy and useful it was to sync my Handspring Visor with the computer. I bought it hoping my laptop and my desktop would become the best of friends. I installed it on one computer with WindowsME and AOL5.0, and it was easy. I attempted to install it on another desktop with Windows98and AOL6.0, and although the installation was easy, it always created GPFs when I tried to run PCSync. In consultation with customer support, I've installed this (with their ministrations and suggestions) a lot of times now (more than 10), and still have yet to get it to work one the Windows 98 computer.

Customer service was notable for the following: I contacted PCSync, and left copious messages on the board they run to offer customer service. To make a long story short, customer service 1) oftentimes did not answer my postings on the board. 2) had a _long_ wait time in excess of 20 minutes when I called them long distance on multiple occaisions 3) before I was ready or willing, closed my account on the board, without giving me a definitive solution. Note well: my tone, both in writing and in voice, was consistent with this message. To be fair, at this writing, they say they will "have a senior technician get back with you" when they have a solution, but their reticence at communication so far. . . Well, you can figure it out from there.

Nope, although there are other products out there that work and work well, this is not one of them. Take your hard earned money, register Winzip, and transfer your data files via another route. It's cheaper, quicker, and, unlike with this product, predictable.

I do hope that someone out there gives due consideration to synchronization between palmtops, laptops, and desktops. If someone can come up with "universal synchronization" between these three devices, they will be rich. Documents to Go, also available via Amazon, does it between a computer and a palmtop, and some programs try to do it between a desktop and a laptop, but, whoever does it between a laptop, desktop, and palmtop, will fill a niche that ever increases in an increasingly mobile computing world.

1-0 out of 5 stars Won't install -- no support
It wouldn't install on my vanilla XP Pro system, there's absolutely no support on the Laplink site, and it trashed my Lotus Notes installation in the process.

It may install and work great for others, but for some reason it has been a complete waste of (too much) time for me!

3-0 out of 5 stars product has been "twilighted"
This product is no longer listed on the manufacturer's web site. When I wrote customer service to inquire why, I was told the product was "twilighted" (which I take as a euphamism for "discontinued."

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well with Lotus Notes (Intellisync does not)
After strugling with the Intellisync trial for about four weeks, I was happy to find this product.

PDAsync

1. Allows direct sync between the Palm Desktop and Lotus Notes (not supported in Intellisync).

2. Allows you to switch synchronization targets (does not work in Intellisync. Their tech support says you can't do that). For me this is a basic requirement.

3. Is half the price of Intellisync.

The interface is a litle puzzling at first. But after you "get it", the product is easy to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars PDAsync is NOT PDAstink
...PDAsync is actually a pretty decent product. Although it won't transfer the notes field in ACT 2000 into a PocketPC..., it WILL permit you to map other customized fields.... ...

1-0 out of 5 stars PDAsync is PDAstink
After my initial sync I could not get PDAsync to transfer additional info between my Jornada 568 and Act 2000. My attempts to retrieve usable info from Laplink's (PDAsync's parent company) so-called "knowledge base" and their tech support have, so-far, been futile.

For tech support, you are permitted one "free" telephone call, then you must pay a price... per incident/call (one call is approx. the cost of the entire program!). Don't try to e-mail them either. They won't accept e-mails without first filling out their form, complete with a serial number. Of course, they don't send out a serial number when you download the product directly from them ... even after purchasing it.

So far, not only has this product cost me money, but it has cost me lots of time. Trust me on this one, pay a few more bucks and get Intellisync or Companionlink.

There is a definite reason why both Laplink Inc. and PDAsync rhyme with "stink". They are both rotten. ... Read more

Remotely accessing computers--whether from the next desk over or in aremote office thousands of miles away--is an essential part of business life. Keeping things running smoothly and safely, Symantec's pcAnywhere 10.5 allowsusers to work where they like without worrying about slow file transfers ormalicious hackers. The package is designed for two sets of users: help deskstaffers who want to watch what their clients are doing or even take overoperations remotely, and mobile professionals who need to access files or runprograms while far from their desks.

Installing and setting up the software can be tricky for novices, so most usersshould have competent IT staff on hand to take care of glitches. Once installed,it's easy to remotely control machines or quickly drag and drop files via cableor modem using the simple, intuitive interface. Essentially, the remote machineopens a window into the host computer to watch or take over its functioning. While this may take a bit of adjustment at first, it quickly becomes secondnature.

The security features for pcAnywhere are strong, varied, and impressive, including basic authentication, roaming network search for unauthorizedconnections, and comprehensive logging. IT professionals will appreciate therebootless install feature, which lets them put the software on employees'computers transparently. Remote access should be safe and painless, andpcAnywhere 10.5 is both. --Rob Lightner

Amazon.com Review

Having used LapLink file transfer software for years, we were more than a little excited to get its latest iteration, PCsync 2.0. Packed with a plethora of features, PCsync 2.0 should be able to fulfill almost every type of file transfer need imaginable. And it does, albeit with software that, at times, can be difficult to configure.

At its core, PCsync is simply a utility that allows users to transfer files via a network connection, using the included serial and USB cables, or over the Internet. To this end, the product is fantastic. PCsync's USB cable transfers files at more than 5 Mbps, compared to a typical LAN's throughput of about 1 Mbps.

In addition to the core application, LapLink also includes a suite of additional utilities that, while they aren't nearly as useful as the basic application, give the product added value. PCMover is fantastic for people who are constantly building new computers with the same applications. Once the new system is built and the applications installed, PCMover updates the applications on the new computer with the settings from the older machine. SmartXchange is a way to ensure that files and folders that are shared between two computers are always in sync. MusicMover is LapLink's attempt to ride the MP3 wave that everyone is so convinced is the Internet's next cash cow. While it isn't a fantastic method for finding MP3s on the Internet, it will work as a classic peer-to-peer method for sharing files with other PCsync users. However, keep in mind that these sharing relations need to be set up manually.

Aside from its core usage--as a simple file transfer utility between two or more computers--another of PCsync's other useful applications is one called Surf Up. A truly brilliant application, Surf Up allows users running PCsync to access their shared folders from any networked computer, using any Web browser. This function is invaluable for people who occasionally work from home and need access to files on a work computer.

While PCsync is a fantastic tool once you get it up and running, we did run into some technical issues during the installation. Installing it on our laptop and home computers was a breeze. However, because PCsync's network settings conflicted with our company's network settings, we had to uninstall and then reinstall PCsync and completely reconfigure our desktop computer's network settings in order to get started.

If you're in the market for a good file transfer application from a reputable company, we're hard pressed not to recommend PCsync. Just be aware, however, that getting PCsync's network settings to live in peace with your computer's network settings may take some work. --William O'Neal ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars wait for 3.0
Help for this product is non-existant. Tech Support reps send you chasing after tech notes. Documentation is completely lacking. Looks like the documentation has not been updated since the last version. The timing on how long this will take is way off. When I first started transferring files, it said that it would take about 3.5 hours. The transfer actually finished just under 24 hours!

5-0 out of 5 stars It is much more than I ever expected!
I bought Pcsync 2.0 a few weeks ago after a friend recommended that this would be a good way for me to get my favorite files, website bookmarks, website logins, and computer settings over to my new computer. I was excited about my new PC, but was dreading the time consuming task of getting all of my info over to the new PC. Then, I loaded PCsync and plugged in the USB cable. I went through the wizard and in a few minutes my information was flying across the USB cable to my new computer. It was so fast and easy - I was truly amazed!

I thought that would be all that I would use this product for - and I considered that a good investment. But after playing with the product, I have learned that I can share files with friends and family all over the world. All they need is an internet browser and they can access my folder. It also has a cool MP3 file manager. I have organized all my MP3 files and created playlists of my favorite songs. I created a playlist of my favorite songs from the good ol' college days and was able to share them with my college buddy, the guy who recommended this product to me. I am sure this product still has much more that I haven't uncovered yet - but for now it far exceeds my expectations!

1-0 out of 5 stars ...
I bought this item last year and although it does what I need it to, I found there to also be a few too many glitches with the product.

For example, as a result of my loading PCSync onto my computer, it won't shut down all the way. I must now manually shut it off. I attempted to rectify this situation but found that the technical support folks at PCsync/Laplink are the absolute worst. They have a huge attitude and are very bitter. And to add insult to injury, they don't seem to have very much knowledge in regard to the product. It goes without saying that they were unable to rectify the shutdown issue.

If you don't mind the inconvenience of the shut down issue each time you turn off your computer, then get the product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awefully slow and hard to troubleshoot
Contrary to many of the other reviewers, I could get it to work on a Win2000 and Win98SE environment with not too much trouble.

However, the product was EXTREMELY slow. It took about 7 HOURS to copy 100MB (by comparison, if you spend the same money on a ZIO plus a 100MB Smart Card, copying 100MB takes less than 15 minutes) Despite downloading new drivers, I could not get it to work faster.

In addition, it only worked after rebooting both notebooks and disconnecting my DSL line. Not a practical approach at all.

I'd strongly recommend to save the money, get a ZIO (or any other portable disk, as long as it's not a ZIP drive) and run a good old sneakernet. Or, double the money and set-up a home network.

1-0 out of 5 stars A great concept, an awful product
Well to start with, it just doesn't work.

After installing it and trying for hours to figure out what was
wrong I called tech support and with all of their help, well it
still doesn't work.

So, at the suggestion of tech support, I got the upgrade, installed it, and.... it just doesn't work! (Are we seeing a
pattern here?).

Now, the suggestion is I buy the latest upgrade to 3.0. Do I look that gullible?

Try something else. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still plan to use this software, but...
This software is great, it is fast, and I can transfer files between two machines, but if you are on a budget though, check in to VNC - Virtual Network Client. It provides the ability to remotely view another computer (platform independent) from your machine.

Using VNC I can log in to my Linux and Windows XP machines from MacOS X. There seems to be a performance hit, not sure why though. It isn't as polished as Timbuktu, but it works, and VNC is open source.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best for both worlds
I had a chance to evaluate this product to connect my office mac computers to my home pc using dial up telephone line. This product is amazing. I could work from home on my office mac using my home pc. It is very simple and easy to use that a computer dumb like me can install it and have it running in no time. Netopia has very prompt technical support for free as well to get you started. I will highly recommend this product to any one who has to work with both kinds of computers. ... Read more
