great deal for all 4 programs!
Being in the design field, I use all of these programs everyday. Pagemaker is essential for layout, Illustrator is essential for design. Photoshop is a great program for photo editing, and of course, Acobat is what I use to pdf design proofs to customers. If you are just starting out in the field and want to start your own design business, I highly recommend this package. As anyone working with multimedia knows, after a few large projects you beginwondering where that funny little icon went or what part of your extensivefolder system holds that cool sound loop. Even the layering capabilities of manygraphics programs don't protect you from the need to catalog and sort yourcreations before they overtake your hard drive like kudzu and you can't findcertain ones when you really need them.

Enter Portfolio 5.0--Extensis's in-depth answer to Cantos Software's Cumulus--anasset-management application that combines powerful indexing and display desktopfeatures with Internet-enabling software.

To begin your first multimedia catalog, simply drag and drop items into an opengallery window (and if using software applications that support drag and drop,you can also drag them out into that application). Portfolio lets you embed yourDigimarc watermark into your creations and associate URLs or Photoshop captionswith your files. You can modify keywords and other searchable fields associatedwith each catalog entry, and you can also custom tag and search text within thefile not associated with standard descriptions or keywords.

Images are initially displayed as thumbnails but can be clicked on to view alarger preview--or a multipage preview in the case of PDFs or layered Photoshopfiles. You can create a slide show using Portfolio, and Macintosh users can evenexport this slide show into a QuickTime movie, where it can be furtheredited.

Searching can be as broad as looking at thumbnails in your gallery view, saving"find galleries" (for example, your retrieval of automobile photos in onegallery) for quick reference later, or as picky as searching for the item'svertical resolution in dpi or based on a digital watermark. Some convenientfeatures include background cataloging (setting the software to update thecatalog from preset folders), and hunting for missing files (files that may havebeen moved but their location is not reflected in their last catalog entry).Updates from the previous version include a dockable-palettes interface and theability to edit in record view.

Portfolio 5.0 for the Macintosh comes bundled with the Portfolio browser and aPortWeb plug-in that works in tandem with your Web-server software. Theread-only Portfolio browser is handy for inclusion with a storage disk or CD-ROMburned for a client. It's also great when catalogs need to be seen more thanmodified.

But the real innovation is the PortWeb plug-in, which lets you use yourMacintosh's Web server (such as StarNine WebStar 2.0-4.2 or Apple Web Server,which is part of AppleShare IP 6) to serve up Portfolio search returns to youronline users. Extensis includes in the manual the syntax you need to include onyour Web site to call into the PortWeb plug-in (and your Portfolio catalogs),and it's pretty easy. Even more impressive is the "collections" (or shoppingcart) capability--though it can't charge your credit card, PortWeb can keeptrack of your multimedia selections. If you code your Web form correctly, youcan have the user check multiple images for collection at one time and add themin a batch to their shopping cart--a poor man's digital-image ordering system ora way to display a band's latest MP3 offerings.

Portfolio 5.0's other features for the Web-design community include exportinggallery views as HTML pages, with an image folder of JPEGS automatically createdto support the newly generated page, and the ability to embed URLs and e-mailaddresses as custom fields in your Portfolio catalog.

For design shops that want to serve other machines on their network, thePortfolio server allows a client/server relationship rather than dependency onthe system file-sharing capabilities. (For office use, Portfolio Server 5.0 can also bebought bundled with five Portfolio clients.)

Though Portfolio is a great setup for a visual-arts professional, theapplication's support of sound and video files makes it easy to see how ananimation buff or MP3 addict could use Portfolio 5.0 to manage theircollections.

And finally, if the files on your hard drive aren't a large-enough kingdom tosurvey, you can extend your system by upgrading with Portfolio 5.0 SQL Connect, intendedfor business-size customers to tie Portfolio Server 5.0 with a Microsoft SQLserver or an Oracle 8i database. You won't know you need it until it's too late....
Portfolio by Extensis will save you a giant headache, especially if you actually plan on doing anything with all the digital media that you keep filling up 80 gig firewires and CD-r discs with. You may think that the application that came free with that other program you have is just dandy and that you'd be silly in the head to pay for one: you are wrong. Sooner or later that app is going to fail you and it will be painful if you've put any time into making a catalogue. The realization that you've been wasting your time usually comes after months and months of total satisfaction. Listen, Portfolio is the standard if your a pro... if you're not a pro maybe it's because you refuse to use the proper tools. Organization and communication are important, even to jerks, so at least use the right tools for those two things. If you can't justify the expense, or your just hobbying about, be prepared for the other shoe. Image horders, you might consider ACDC (word to the wise, use a different app as your database) . If you have some room to move in the budget dept or if your need for an app like this is work related then for goodness sake buy this program before I vomit. No I don't work for them, yes I really will vomit. PS You owe me one gumball machine.
