Imagine Outlook on steroids and you're halfway to understanding what you can do with ACT! 6.0. Installation can take a little planning, as you can't start using ACT! until you have registered it via the Internet or by printing out your registration details. If your PC has neither a printer nor an Internet connection, beware. It is also essential to look through the Readme file before you start using ACT! to ensure you understand how it integrates with other applications. On the plus side, it does include a printed manual so you can find out what it does without having to wade through the online help.

Once installed, you can either start entering your data manually or use the import wizard to import data from an existing source. ACT! allows you to store a vast array of information about your contacts. You can even attach letters and documents that relate to a given contact. Key to ACT! are the sales and opportunities features that allow you to keep track of where you are with each contact. ACT! can either be used as a standalone tool, or a work group can share a single database, with individual usernames and passwords.

Where ACT! really excels is in its ability to integrate with existing applications. From within ACT! you can send e-mails using the software's own e-mail function, or with Outlook or Outlook Express. You can also send faxes with WinFax Pro. Documents can be created using ACT! or your usual word processing program. Switched to ACT! 6.0
I have been a Goldmine user for the last four years, but after downloading the free trial version of ACT! 6.0 from their web site, I decided to switch. ACT! 6.0 has a much nicer graphical interface and more enriched features than previous releases. ACT! 6.0 integrated nicely with my outlook XP so that I am able to compose and read messages that are sent with Outlook from within the ACT! console. This is a nice feature because email retrieved by ACT! this way can be scanned by my anti-virus software. The library tab is a nice added feature and it allows you to associate several media type files with your contact.

Data conversion for me was quick. I found it fairly easy to set up custom field and reports within ACT. I would recomend this product strongly to anyone who is in the market for contact software. If you are already an Outlook user, this product is particular nice because of its integration with that program.

buggy resource hog
A longtime ACT fan, I upgraded to 6.0 for the email integration and library tab. They don't work unless I turn off scripting protection in Norton AntiVirus - tedious at best and I'm unwilling to leave it turned off. The ACT for Palm feature, the other item that sold me, is very limited - for example shows me only the primary contact for a given company.

The real problem is the bugs. It causes unrelenting problems on my XP system. I have 1 GB of RAM and a 2.8 processor! Yet somehow it manages to cause memory shortages and locks up regularly. I've almost stopped using it because it's as much an annoyance as help. I've never had a software program that I evaluate before launching: do I have time for a lock up? NONE of my other software programs cause these kinds of problems, and I run some heavy-duty graphics programs.

I'm at the point of looking for another contact manager, which is too bad because I was a solid ACT user for so many years.

Not perfect but perfect for my needs.
I am a Virtual Assistant who works with several clients who use ACT. I keep their databases up to date and synchronize with them whenever necessary. ACT 6.0 is a bit bloated and has unnecessary features but on my machine it has been stable and was easy to set up. This is a good, solid database program that has great customer forums available on their web site.

Upgrade only if you need the new email capabilities
I upgraded from ACT 2000 because I needed to be able to send out email mailings to my customers in HTML. ACT 6 does do that pretty well, so I'm pleased I went ahead with the upgrade. But without doubt Interact has introduced a lot of bugs into the product -- I guess they lost most of the programmers who knew the program when they bought ACT from Symantec. The email program itself is buggy and will only work for me if I have Outlook running as well. Also, very frustrating, is that the wordprocessor driver crashes after one use, so I can only create one document at a time then I have to reboot. Their support site doesn't seem to have a solution for this.
Apart from rewriting the email system, there is very little that's upgraded from ACT 2000, as far as I can tell.

Regret Ever Upgrading to ACT! 6.0
As a long time user of ACT!, we were enticed to do the 6.0 upgrade to finally get a useable integrated e-mail capability. Interestingly enough, the e-mail piece is the only real upgrade worth noting in 6.0... what a shame that it stinks! At least the old 5.0 e-mail module worked, although primative. 6.0 e-mail is buggy, crashes the computers, is a resource hog, slow, in fact, there is nothing good to say about it, even the html capability doesn't work. If you are in a business where sales staff make sustained connections with prospects over any period of time, you need some way to track these profiles. Act! 2000 provides just such contact management.

Installing Act! 2000 is very easy. It requires around 50 MB of hard disk space, which can grow considerably depending on the number of contacts you enter. While we were examining the software, though, an odd printing problem occurred. Act! comes with a toll-call support line for installation and configuration--90 days free from first call--with an automated call attendant waiting on the other end. (Reaching a real person, however, did not take long.) Although this particular printing problem was not reproducible, the technical support person was friendly and helpful. Given the complex nature of Act! 2000, you may easily encounter a problem over a year of use. The online fax-back service, and pay-per-use technical support options, should meet the needs of most users.

This feature-rich (sales forecast, groups, sales reports, sales opportunity tracking) contact-management software has added elements in this version. There is tighter integration with Microsoft's Outlook, allowing you to import contact information, use Outlook Mail from within Act! 2000, and view your calendar activity in Outlook. Better group management, easier e-mail access, graphical reports, and an improved database lookup are just a few of the improvements. Makes me a one-man sales force!
What a breath of fresh air! Puts Outlook to shame and is really a "must-have" for any account salesperson. Manages your relationships at every step throughout the sales process. Maintains a running history of all calls, e-mails, and letters to and from a contact (which you can pull up at a moment's notice to quote to a prospect if they "remember" things differently than you do). Also allows you to group contacts and companies with common denominators for easy marketing. ACT! is not the only software that can do this effectively, but for me the final choice was between ACT! and GoldMine. Any PIM will be a little hard to use for a first-timer, but ACT! is notably easier to learn and use than GoldMine. ACT! crashes once in a while and has a few bugs, but I've never used a software product that was always stable. True, GoldMine is a little more powerful in a few areas, such as creating search groups through its Filter feature, but ACT! really has everything you need and doesn't clutter up your brain andyour RAM with a bunch of complex features that you rarely use. Also, there is now a piece of software available that links my ACT! contacts to my accounts receivable processes in QuickBooks, and that was probably the clincher. If you have any doubts, download both ACT! and GM trial versions and try them both at once for free--that's what I did and I found myself naturally gravitating toward ACT! from Day One of the trial period.

Boost your productivity with this program
I have been an ACT! user for a number of years. Now, I don't know what I would do without it.

Used properly, ACT! 2000 becomes the center of your business life. When you write a letter, you do it from within ACT!. When you schedule an activity, you do it from within ACT!. When you send an email, you send it from ACT!. Every form of correspondence save carrier pigeons can be done from within ACT!.

Then, six months down the road, you can look at a contact and see exactly what you've done with them. Your letters are all linked in ACT!'s Notes/History tab. The same with your activities, emails, and other correspondence.

If you don't have this program, you should. It'll boos your productivity, save you time, energy, and money!

Ask their Support Staff Questions First
I asked sales at ACT if their software would be able transfer files from Maximizer to Act and they said Yes. But, in reality, ACT doesn't have a way to transfer "Notes" on each record into the ACT program. Next...

Disappointing - wait until another version is released
I am terribly disappointed in this software. Because it has been sold back and forth among several companies over the last few years, product development has lagged badly. Right now, the product isn't worth using. As one of their support technicians acknowledged to me on the phone, ACT's integration of email with other contact management functionality is practically nonexistent, leaving the program several years behind the realities of relationship management in the 21st century. ACT is so bad in its current state that I uninstalled it and am writing off the cost of the software. Perhaps if I do not find a better solution in the meantime, I may look into the next version whenever it is released. But for right now, NOT RECOMMENDED.

e-mail interface lacking
I've been using ACT for several years now and love it except for the e-mail interface to Outlook. It's clunky, slow, and does not support HTML so I keep finding myself reverting back to Outlook to send e-mail. This means that I'm not keeping track of e-mail through ACT which is a real problem. Even when I do go to the effort to send e-mail through ACT it doesn't keep a pop-up file like it does for letters. Too bad, this is really a great tool. I just wish it was even better. ... Read more

Get business cards into electronics fast
Tired of the piles of business cards on the desk? This may be the solution to a clean desk. The scanner scans each business card and the software places the text into its corresponding fields in the address book. The scanned image goes in the address book entry.

The set up including installing the software, connecting the scanner into the USB port, and scanning the first card takes ten minutes. Like any scanner on the market, the scanned text has typos and it is not always in the correct field. The software compensates by retaining a scanned image in the address book entry for easy reference.

Use the CardScan software and integrate it with other technologies. Click on a contact's address while connected to the Internet and it takes you to Mapquest for a map. Include a personal business card with outgoing Outlook emails. Transfer contact information to compatible PDAs, contact managers, digital mobile phones or paper organizer software.

Also useful especially for travelers is CardScan.Net, a secure server that stores the scanned contact information for accessing on any Web browser using a personal password.

Get those Business Cards under control
Do you have stacks of business cards sitting in boxes are wrapped up in rubber bands? Do you come back from a trade show or meeting with a pocket full of cards and never do anything with them? If so the Corex Cardscan is for you.

I've used it for over 6 months and love it. Installation was easy - follow the instructions - install software - plug in the USB cable. The scanner is very fast and very accurate. I normally don't have to make any corrections to the scanning results. Cards with very unusual fonts or layouts sometimes need correction. The included software works flawlessly with ACT! or outlook. Another cool feature is the link to the Cardscan.net site. This allows you to back-up/store and access your business card file on online. It is also very easy to use. Again I have found this to be a lifesaver for handling business cards and with many months of use I have had no problems.

Great easy to use product
To the person who says it doesnt scan the graphics - it does.
It can store the image from both sides of the card and the english text from one side.
I find it easy to use and very useful. Mostly i dont bother to verify the cards as there is almost always enough data stored correctly.

Why only 4 stars

I would like easier ways to select which contacts to transfer into other programs (I scan everything since its so easy but i dont need a lot of the data on a daily basis so i dont want to transfer everything) and easier ways to split and merge databases by batch selection. It has these facilities but its too hard !

As someone who lives and travels in Asia many of my cards have the local language details on the back. You can scan the back you cant print it. Give a printed copy to a cab driver is an easy way to get to where i want to go when i cant speak the language.

Finally the copy and paste is fiddly.

But i use it every day and i have all my cards going back 7 years accessible by a simple text search.

Time saver
This incredible program has proven its value by allowing me to synchronize my phone data in my Palm VII and Nokia cell phone.The PC application is a simple screen that allows me to read information from my phone, edit and save it back, create new entries or drag and drop entries from my Palm address book.

Another valuable feature is that I have all of my phone data backed up on my PC, so if ever I change phones I don't have to manually enter all of the numbers from my old phone - I merely have to upload what I have saved on my PC to the new one.

If you use a call phone that's supported (I have a Nokia, but a Motorola version is also sold here) this could be one of your most used programs, especially if you have a lot of numbers, or frequently add, edit or delete them. ... Read more
