WinFax Pro 10.0 shatters the idea of truth in advertising. The currentversion of the king suite of faxing software has many of the user-friendlyfeatures that have made WinFax Pro the de facto fax application. However, itsbox copy makes a few promises the software can't keep, so buyers beware: ifyou're running Windows XP or Office XP (or both), you're looking for trouble ifyou purchase this otherwise excellent program.

WinFax Pro is full of features, including a cover page designer, an automatedbackup manager, a network fax-sharing module, and more. Its interface will befamiliar and comfortable to anyone who uses Microsoft Outlook or OutlookExpress. The Message Manager--where you do most of your faxing work--is dividedinto Outlook-style panes, with several folders that include a receive log, asend log, an outbox, and a wastebasket in the upper left, a list of faxes in theupper right, and a multipurpose pane on the bottom that lets you view detailsabout a fax or take a quick peek at it.

Opening a fax for viewing invokes a viewer applet, which looks like AdobeAcrobat Reader. It comes complete with a pane of thumbnails down the left sidefor page navigation, with the main document view taking up the larger portion ofthe screen.

You can compose fax documents in any word processor. To fax them, use the mainWinFax Pro interface, a button installed in your Microsoft Word toolbar, or adrag-and-drop desktop icon. WinFax also lets you send faxes as attachmentsthrough Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, or Exchange, which is a mysteriousfeature considering you can send your documents as attachments without WinFaxPro. In any regard, while the feature worked well on a Windows Me machine withOffice 2000, it caused errors and crashes on Windows XP.

Other problems surfaced during testing. Faxing directly through Word XP with thetoolbar button caused crashes. A "photo quality" mode offered in the send moduledoesn't come anywhere close to photo quality. Every time we opened Word XP, anerror dialog appeared; Symantec's tech support said that it occurred because wedidn't have a modem installed. That conversation took place after we'd sentseveral test faxes through our installed modem.

WinFax Pro 10 worked as advertised on our Windows Me system, and it's full ofoutstanding features. However, if you've upgraded to Windows XP or if you'rerunning Office XP, hold off until Symantec patches this program into submission.--Joel Durham Jr. ... Read more

Cool
I've used winfax Pro at our ex-office, it completely solved all our faxing problems. So we didnt even needed for a fax machine.

The installation was so easy, it detected the hardware, and all I had to do was pressing the next button, and giving some info about our company. Then I changed the role of the machine in the setup menu, to a fax server. And went to the other computers and installed to all of the other machines. ( There may be a way for an automated setup, but I didnt needed so I am not sure of it.) It detected the fax server and installed it. We had 10 machines on our network, and all the installation process took less than an hour.

We configured the server to forward faxes, even i tought it wouldnt work, it worked fine. The faxes from the banks went directly to accountant department, etc...

We entered all of our customer list to winfax, and started to send faxes to them about our new products. It started faxing, and we went to our home. The next day boss asked us which customers received the fax. I thought I should go into the logs, and search for it. But theres a good designed window, you can see who send the fax to who, at what time, you can configure a report and so on ...

When I looked at the documentation, (Its good documented, you can find all the answers,) I was surprised it even has its own macro language. I didnt tried that but I think theres no fax product that you write down macros.

All was better than I accepted. Since that day our secratary is just reading the her book.

In conclusion, I think its nearly the best product that satisfied me.

Don't buy Winfax
Absolutely useless. Causes word to lock. Will not uninstall. Symantec fixes don't work. Hours wasted. Don't buy this product.

Good for average user. Power user beware!
Although I am working around the vast amount of bugs this program carries with it, it does deliver faxes ok. The client/server functionality sucks. The areacode rules are supposed to be set on the server however for some starnage reason they do not work. KB articles on symantecs site only confuse things. HORRIBLE support of this product. I am looking elsewhere for a solution.

Terrific Product
Reading through the reviews, I saw many, many folks had big time problems installing this package. This was especially true for WinXP users.

Using Google I found an OEM CD copy of Version 10.3 for $15 + s/h. At that price I figured I could risk trying it since some reviewers had very good results.

Well, it went on my Dell Dimension 8250 with Win XP Pro without a hitch.

My only comment is: before installation (1) clean out any and all previous versions from your computer; (2) shut down antivirus and firewall applictions (and any other easy to close applications).

It's a great package that does it all.

Quite possibly the worst piece of software ever written
I bought this software and installed it on one of my customers machines, I set up a special computer to be a "fax server" to recieve faxes and organize them into different folders, strangely the WinFax will randomly reject faxes, somedays it will refuse to work, somedays it will work great, somedays it will reject 50%, who knows what mood its in. I reformatted the computer so that the only thing installed is Win98 and WinFax, I replaced the modem TWICE, my customer moved to a new office in a different building with a completely different phone line and the product still doesn't work. Hot Fax
I called Smith Micro customer support when my demo version was restored on my computer and my purchased full version vanished. I called their customer service, it is horrible, or should I say "Customer NO Service" since there is none. They me to call another number "didn't work". I called the main number for service and find I need an access number. Bottom line, I paid for a fax software which I downloaded and they didn't send me a disk. They turned on the demo and that now doesn't work. All my files are stored on the demo version where I can't get to them. I'd be glad for Hot fax support to e-mail me a solution. If they don't support this, why do they build and sell such software, and who will buy that?

If you are thinking to buy it and will need support sometime down the road, forget it, give it up and look for something else.

Great Product
This product will SAVE any small business a thousand or more dollars by using a computer and software rather than purchasing an expensive voice mail system. BRAVO to Smith Micro!
BTW, I purchased an early version (2.0) years ago, and it was very good then. I can't wait to start using 5.0!

Appalling experience!
After much research and what I thought was careful planning, I downloaded the software and found it would not work with my computer. To make it work would require a new modem for around $300.00. Tried to contact Smith Micro and they were "on holiday". Unfortunately, the time frame to return product expired while they were "on holiday" and they said it was too bad for me. Terrible customer service and I encourage people to do business with another company entirely.

Hotfax Message Center
We had a hard drive crash, and lost our copy of Quicklink (and I couldn't find the original media anywhere.) I dl'd the demo, then purchased the new HFMC to install over the demo. The disk that Smithmicro sent was physically broken (they ship the CD in a flimsy envelope, no box) and when I asked for help getting my now-expired system up, they wanted me to send the broken one back before replacing (understand they had a credit card record of my original purchase) God forbid that you have any trouble with these guys. Their tech support is non-existant. They have one of the worst voice-mail-hell systems I've ever seen. I was absolutely furious by the time I actually got to speak with a human. And he was just useless.

I'm using this product to support a remote office call-in system and due to the above non-support, I finally had to buy another copy (downloaded this time) to get my remote ops back up. I feel like an extortion victim. I'll never buy from these guys again. Stars: one for product, ZERO for customer support. I am now searching for a replacement.

Works Flawlessly!!!!
This is my 5th voicemail/fax system in the past 10 years,
and the only one that has ever performed as expected. It is simple, reliable, easy to use. Most of the other programs I had went out of business, or dropped support. The name is misleading
because it is more than just a fax utility. Voicemail with options is just as important to me. This software should be marketed as telephony. It just doesn't come up is searches for

Worked with ME, not XP
I used to use this software a good bit when I had WinME. The only real problem I had was with the answering machine. NO matter what I did, the recorded voice (mine, not the pre-recorded included) sounded as if it was speaking at half-speed.

I've now upgraded to WinXP and I can't get it to work. It installs fine, recognizes and initiates my modem, but it won't send out a fax, nor will it let me make any settings changes. It acts as if there is no phone line connected.

Also, good luck finding any support whatsoever. The original maker Communique, doesn't even list this product on their website.

Stay far, far away!

Ever hear the phrase: Good in theory, bad in practic?
This software epitomises this phrase. I bought this software for its voice capabilities, and loew and behold, it has bugs, and it does not fully support my modem. In fact, it only supports 3 modems PERIOD. I wish I had known this before I gought it. Oh well. Do not make the same mistake.

Great deal!!
Once in a while, I come across with products with great values at great price. This is one of them. My friend recommended that to me last month and I can't believe all the features it has at this price. First of all, it recognised my modem automatically without any problem and I can send/receive faxes immediately after this.

Unfortunately, my modem has no voice features so I cannot enjoy the voice features of this product yet. Even treated as a fax-only software, it is still a great deal doing the same as Winfax does at $60 less.

Do Not Buy This Software
I also purchased this software because it was a good price and it seemed to have all of the features I was looking for. However, when I installed in on my computer to use it, it never worked. I am now out the money I paid for the software because you can not return opened software. I believe if the software requires special equiptment it should be listed on the box so that other comsumers don't waste their money on something that won't work with thier hardware. DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE.

If I could this product would receive -5 stars. While it seems to install without a hitch, in actuality that is because it doesn't recognize your equipment and will not work. The authorized modem list consists of less than 12 modems and only one of those is a PCI modem, needless to say not mine. SO! Good overall fax system
For a fax program that is better than the windows version, this program is a no brainer. I have no trouble sending and receiving faxes. Good product to buy, no problems yet.

Compatibility Problems
Tried V4.0, did not reliably answer calls and it caused problems with my system seizing up when answering.

Complex - Performs less than Satisfactory in Answering Calls
Used version 3 and 4. Choices of mail boxes, answering calls,paging, and faxing. The first PC answering machine we used wasFaxWorks on a Packard Bell PC. In contrast, every other package we have tried performs a great deal of secondary options, yet they are less than adequate on answering phone calls for small businesses. Furthermore, if you listened to a message on HotFax and wanted to replay, you need to open another menu. Possibly for you if you don't need the voice service. THIS SOFTWARE IS TERRIBLE!
I have just purchased the COMMUNICATE! software and quite frankly, I am extremely disappointed with the purchase! The set up process is cumbersome and complicated. Additionally, importing data is excruciating from the incomplete and poorly written included instructions. Unfortunately, the manufacturer (01 Communique) does not appear to offer a money back guarantee and once software has been opened it cannot be returned. If you are considering the purchase of fax software, I STRONGLY suggest that you spend your money on a different fax program!

DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE
I bought the Communicate 10.0 and I could not get it to work so the manufacturer had me try the i2000 version to see if I could get that to work. I downloaded the software and I could not get that to work either. I sent them the test information they asked me for and they told me that my modem was not compatible. He sent me a list of modems and there were only Three modems listed which were not listed on the box as hardware requirements. If you don't want to lose your money do not buy this software.

Pretty cool!
I haven't been using the product for that long, but it certainly has all the bells-and-whistles, and they all work. It is picky about the modem it needs (requiring a modem that properly supports voice), but once running it is very slick! Answers my phone, allows me to do voice mail blasts etc. etc.

I would definitely recommend anyone try the 30 day trial. They have a newer product that allows remote access to your email, contacts, files and such (according to tech support anyway), but the remote access appears to be the only difference from this product ... and if it ain't broke! ... It works .... Sometimes
Been using this for around 1 year now and it crashes allot and when it does it doesn't hang up the phone line. This could be for hours or days depending if your on vacation or just out and about. Haven't found any support anywhere yet. When it works it works pretty well. Mailboxes are easy to setup and the built in options are more then suffcient to use in a small office enviroment. Multipurpose Communication Program
This the most complete professional communications program I have used in my 25 years of computer experience. Your computer becomes a fax/voice mail/video conferencing machine.

it works just fine
some folks have had trouble with the product I see but if you have a modem that is compatable it works without problem- it took me a while to get everything set up because it is complex software but once working it gave me the equivalent of a good in office receptionist

But be sure to have a compatable modem before you start

modems are unavailable or no longer supported
i have tried compro version 2 and had to go back to my old speaker phone and answering machine

so i upgraded to version 5
same thing ..bound and determined to make it work .. 4 modems
later (communicate points at the modems)

one modem manufacturers tech support told me to give up on the software and move on

being a little hard headed i hired a certified technician to come to my office to straighten it out, he removed sound cards, configured, re-configured, tried all 4 of the modems i had purchased, tried windows 98, windows me, downloaded drivers from obscure web sites, smoked a pack of cigarettes and left

so..before you buy this software, try to find a modem from the list at 01com.com look over the list very carefully to see if has the features you want
then try to find the modem. don't bother going to local super store they only sell current, supported hardware
it is not on the shelf i assure you
try the auctions
then..... try to find support for the outdated modem or updated drivers....
so it is back to the old answering machine i guess

Sadly the worse purchase I 'ever' made...
I made it a point to come here and write this review. But one star is wrong... it should be 'negative' 5 stars! Perhaps I can spare someone else the nightmare that I endured.

I'm disabled and depend on phone communications to make a living. I wanted the best. After 3 months, 2 modems, at least 100 hours of frustration and a dozen emails to the support department -- this software sits on the shelf collecting dust! It is completely unusable. They assured me that it would provide basic phone functionality with my current modem (Creative Blaster) by email 'before I bought it'... but it does not and 'after I bought' they're story changed.

Hear's what you're buying: conversations fade out (you think the other person paused but no...), you must adjust the volume between dialing and talking or your ears will bleed (the dialing beep can be heard in the next city), it won't 'beep' after the answering machine message (you have to add your own), it doesn't notify you when a message is waiting, if you link it to Outlook it zaps Outlook every time you look up a number, and on occasion it cuts messages off at 3 seconds... and there's more. The over all design is terrible, its hard to use and its completely over engineered.

'After' I bought it they said 'oh, won't work with that modem'. I switched to my 2nd PC which had 'approved modem' on their list... same thing! Which says to me that they would have me go out and purchase another modem and install it for nothing. The next thing they told me was, 'Oh, you must not use your sound card' - well, who needs multimedia anyway. BTW, freeware works fine with my modem and sound card... *freeware*!

Perhaps, if you work down the modem list and get just the right one, devote your entire sound system to Communicate! i2000 and devote the next 3 months of your life to messing with all this... you might be able to phone home! I never even got to try the other features.

Of course I'm beyond the refund period. I'm stuck, they won't refund my money (they got me!). Money truly wasted but it is the 'time' I wasted on it that really cost me.

I'd sell it cheap but... I wouldn't do that to my worst enemy.

Yes... Commnicate! I2000's features sound so nice don't they -- unfortunately you need to press 'redial' on this one and move on... as quickly as possible!

Compatability Issues
I have yet to resolve the compatability issues with this software and the modem. Anyone interested in the software should contact the i2000 technical support team for a list of modems that are compatible with the software. Though the software boasts of the feature rich content.
