No Terminal Services In This Edition
Be forewarned if you are wanting to use this as an application server. The Terminal Services included in this edition are limited to two users and will NOT run in Application Mode. Microsoft claims this limited for security purposes, but you can do this on their full blown product, so I think it is more for $ purposes (they want more). As far as the product goes, the value is pretty good. You get an Exchange server, POP3 mail connector (this distributes email from a POP3 account to the proper Exchange account), fax sharing software, and Outlook 2003. WinFax Pro 10.0 shatters the idea of truth in advertising. The currentversion of the king suite of faxing software has many of the user-friendlyfeatures that have made WinFax Pro the de facto fax application. However, itsbox copy makes a few promises the software can't keep, so buyers beware: ifyou're running Windows XP or Office XP (or both), you're looking for trouble ifyou purchase this otherwise excellent program.

WinFax Pro is full of features, including a cover page designer, an automatedbackup manager, a network fax-sharing module, and more. Its interface will befamiliar and comfortable to anyone who uses Microsoft Outlook or OutlookExpress. The Message Manager--where you do most of your faxing work--is dividedinto Outlook-style panes, with several folders that include a receive log, asend log, an outbox, and a wastebasket in the upper left, a list of faxes in theupper right, and a multipurpose pane on the bottom that lets you view detailsabout a fax or take a quick peek at it.

Every time we opened Word XP, anerror dialog appeared; Symantec's tech support said that it occurred because wedidn't have a modem installed. That conversation took place after we'd sentseveral test faxes through our installed modem.

Cool
I've used winfax Pro at our ex-office, it completely solved all our faxing problems. So we didnt even needed for a fax machine.

The installation was so easy, it detected the hardware, and all I had to do was pressing the next button, and giving some info about our company. Then I changed the role of the machine in the setup menu, to a fax server. And went to the other computers and installed to all of the other machines. ( There may be a way for an automated setup, but I didnt needed so I am not sure of it.) It detected the fax server and installed it. We had 10 machines on our network, and all the installation process took less than an hour.

We configured the server to forward faxes, even i tought it wouldnt work, it worked fine. The faxes from the banks went directly to accountant department, etc...

We entered all of our customer list to winfax, and started to send faxes to them about our new products. It started faxing, and we went to our home. The next day boss asked us which customers received the fax. I thought I should go into the logs, and search for it. But theres a good designed window, you can see who send the fax to who, at what time, you can configure a report and so on ...

When I looked at the documentation, (Its good documented, you can find all the answers,) I was surprised it even has its own macro language. I didnt tried that but I think theres no fax product that you write down macros.

All was better than I accepted. Since that day our secratary is just reading the her book.

In conclusion, I think its nearly the best product that satisfied me.

Don't buy Winfax
Absolutely useless. Causes word to lock. Will not uninstall. Symantec fixes don't work. Hours wasted. Don't buy this product.

Good for average user. Power user beware!
Although I am working around the vast amount of bugs this program carries with it, it does deliver faxes ok. The client/server functionality sucks. The areacode rules are supposed to be set on the server however for some starnage reason they do not work. KB articles on symantecs site only confuse things. HORRIBLE support of this product. I am looking elsewhere for a solution.

Terrific Product
Reading through the reviews, I saw many, many folks had big time problems installing this package. This was especially true for WinXP users.

Using Google I found an OEM CD copy of Version 10.3 for $15 + s/h. At that price I figured I could risk trying it since some reviewers had very good results.

Well, it went on my Dell Dimension 8250 with Win XP Pro without a hitch.

My only comment is: before installation (1) clean out any and all previous versions from your computer; (2) shut down antivirus and firewall applictions (and any other easy to close applications).

It's a great package that does it all.

Quite possibly the worst piece of software ever written
I bought this software and installed it on one of my customers machines, I set up a special computer to be a "fax server" to recieve faxes and organize them into different folders, strangely the WinFax will randomly reject faxes, somedays it will refuse to work, somedays it will work great, somedays it will reject 50%, who knows what mood its in. I reformatted the computer so that the only thing installed is Win98 and WinFax, I replaced the modem TWICE, my customer moved to a new office in a different building with a completely different phone line and the product still doesn't work. E-mail is once again an enjoyable EXPERIENCE!
Outlook, is so revamped, this alone is a worthy upgrade. Three panes in Outlook 2003 make e-mail an enjoyable experience. The Mail Pane holds all of the necessary tools found in prior versions of Outlook such as the Outlook Bar, and the different folders such as inbox, calendar, etc. The second pane gives an expanded view of the different items listed in the Mail Pane, like your incoming mail, contacts and calendar, which makes reading these information resources easier on the eye and productive by providing a better view. Reading your e-mail in the third pane (Preview Pane), the user views the message in portrait layout, more content is seen compared to prior versions. Its even better to view e-mails with "Clear Type" turned on for Windows XP users. Other features such as improved Virus and Spam protection makes Outlook 2003 a great upgrade. Outlook is not placed on the desktop by default, it can also be minimized to the system tray in Windows, for users connected to an Exchange Server, this displays all the network settings available.

Worth the cost of the upgrade? Buyer beware.
I like the new layout of the panes in the Outlook 2003 window but is it worth the price of the upgrade? Probably not.
I have run into a few problems since I first rated this product.
I read a couple reviews of the Office 2003 upgrade and found that others felt the Outlook 2003 upgrade is the only part of the new Office suite that is worth the cost and hassle to upgrade. I decide to take their advice (and save $) and only upgrade OL.
Two problems have arisen since then.
1. The Office Shortcut bar is no longer a part of the Office suite. This is a great disappointment to me because this is one of the great efficiency tools that Windows has to offer. Luckily, Office XP is still installed as Word/Excel/PowerPoint so I still have the bar but the buttons which applied to OL 2003 are no longer available. If you are dependent on this feature as I have become, don't upgrade the full suite or it will disappear.
2. Because of the conflicting versions of the Office suite that I am using, there isn't full functionality between the programs anymore. For example, I can no longer send the body of a Word/Excel document as the body of an email by simply clicking the "E-mail" on the toolbar in the application. This is more trivial than the first issue.

Need to fix PCS
Generally good, but two bugs remain from before:
1) Outlook PCS, which offers the only hope of exchanging with a PDA contact date organized into subfolders, is so buggy as to be unusable. A little effort by MS could make it great.
2) Appointments still get totally screwed up if you change time zones on the computer. Have to work around by pretending that you're in your home time zone when you travel, but just change the clock time.

Works Great
New interface and features are nice. I use OpenOffice.org instead of Microsoft Office, so a can't comment on the Microsoft Office integration.

Didn't notice and "AdWare" as stated by another reviewer.

I upgraded from Outlook 2000 and it went flawlessly. Found all my Rules, customized folders and Accounts without any setup.

Until the Open Source community provides an alternative on a Microsoft platform, I'll continue to use Microsoft Outlook. For $90.00, you can't beat it.

Big improvement, new folder features are great
I use Outlook for managing tasks, contacts, mail and schedules. The new 2003 version is a vast improvement, at least in look and feel. The folder management is revised to split the window on the left to "favorite folders" and "all folders." Folders are a great way to organize and store emails, so this is a welcome change.

Then, the mail is organized by "today", "yesterday", and then the days of the week and back weeks. This helps to organize and trim out the inbox, which can get cluttered. For this attractive new feature alone, it's worth upgrading.

The look of the user interface is consistent with Windows XP, with the snazzy shaded bars. Nice to work with. Other improvements --the calendar also has been expanded, and tasks and contacts have new features, too. For example, the mail reading pane is larger, less scrolling required (yay!) and you can organize messages by subject thread to delete an entire series. Pretty cool.

If you are a dedicated Outlook user, the upgrade is well worth it, in my opinion. ... Read more

Well worth the upgrade from the free version.
I first used the free version of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE, and found it did a great job finding and removing ad-ware and spy-ware.The trouble was, I would find new spy-ware following each visit to the web.

By purchasing the "Plus" version, you get an additional feature, "Ad-Watch".Ad-Watch runs in the background similarly to an antivirus program.It stops ad-ware and spy-ware before they have an opportunity to work.Without Ad-Watch, any spy-ware or ad-ware will be active until you run Ad-Aware to remove it.

Excellent
Exchange is an excellent email server program. Running on Windows 2000 Server with all the service packs applied, it performs only as good as how its managed. The sever must have a VSAPI capable anti-virus and anti-spam software. Managing Exchange requires more than average network administrator skills and a good deal of knowledge of Active Directory. Additionally, Outlook clients can benefit from customizations and email anywhere via Outlook Web Access.

No competition.
This is by far the best mail server available on the market - the Active Directory integration alone makes this worth the upgrade from Exchange 5.5. The Outlook Web Client, storage scalability and other enhancements make administration a lot easier for me, and keep my clients happy.

Excellent piece of server software in every respect.

Real easy photo software
This is one of the easiest softwares I've ever used for my digital photos. It allows me to edit my photos, add clip art and captions, and make slideshows. The best thing is I can email my slideshows to my family living throughout the U.S. So many features are available and anyone can use it, even my 7 year old daughter.

I just bought Nero PhotoShow Elite and I think it's an excellent program for editing and creating slideshows from my digital pictures.

I tried to burn a CD for use in my TV DVD player and the order of the images was changed from the order in the slide show I had created. I have tried to use the online info and contact the tech support for this product without much luck. No responce from them in 10 days. Perhaps since this is a new product (version 1.0) they aren't up to speed in the tech support department yet, but I would have appreceated an some answer. I will update this if I get the problem solved.

Overpriced and underpowered..... This software is more annoying then anything else. You practically have to turn off every setting to get your networked printers and network games to work, for example.

A poorly designed product
It took me a day to install this product. If you do choose to use this product be sure to uninstall all other norton virus and internet security products even tho the instructions say that norton 2003 is uninstalled automatically--it isin't!! My computer now crashes frequently since I began using this product. My advice is to stay clear of this product until they get it fixed. One other point--don't count on getting any technical help form Symantec--they don't even have decent free help installing the product let alone using it.

Stay as far away from this as you can....
I recommended this for my father based on my experience with previous versions. I wish I'd done some research first....

My father installed it on his desktop (a Dell running WinME) without any problems. When the system asked him to reboot, he said he'd do it later because it was late, and simply shut down the computer. The next morning he discovered the worst.

When he tried to boot up the computer, it started booting up normally, but when it got to his desktop, that's all he got - a blank desktop. No icons, no start menu, nothing. In fact, CTRL-ALT-DEL shows that nothing is running. Weird huh? Even weirder is that when he tried to go into 'Safe Mode', the exact same thing happens. I'm not sure what NIS 2004 did to his computer, but nothing short of reinstalling his entire system would get it to boot up.

Now comes the fun part - Symantec Technical Support and Customer Service. They don't exist. The only free tech support they have is email based, and run by people in India, who apparently don't speak English. I sent them email after email telling them that the system wouldn't boot up, and every time the sent back replies telling me to go to the 'Start Menu' and go here and there and do this and that. The just didn't get the fact that I couldn't load Windows.

So, I thought I'd give them a call to complain about the terrible tech support. I looked up their number on the internet and called. I got routed around the country to different phone systems, and then sat on hold for over two hours before I finally got frustrated enough to hang up and write the Better Business Bureau. Needless to say, I won't be installing this product on my own computer, and unless Symantec makes some major changes to the base program, won't be buying any more of their products.

If you're a computer guru, you might be able to get it to work, in which case this is a good program. The problem is, I'm a computer guru, and I couldn't make it work...

Waste of Money
This software won't allow my computer to access the internet. No email gets through. All web pages are inaccessible. When the problem first occurred, I disabled the software to go to Symantec's website and followed Symantec's automated online instructions to configure it. This fixed the problem for the rest of that day, but then the problem recurred the next time I rebooted. Symantec's human tech support is $30 per incident! Why should I throw bad money after good? I'm writing this off as a $40 mistake. You're better off with a $40 router and/or some freeware security software. Norton Anti-Virus may be pretty good, but the rest of this Internet Security package sucks.

Disappointed in California
I have been a Norton Internet Security user for years with total satisfaction. Upgrading to the 2004 version has nearly destroyed my Microsoft Outlook - it took hours to get back my previous Emails and more importantly my Address Book. It is still not as it was, but at least I can see everything. My Freecell is totally unusable. Also having problems with Word. The Symantec website has many articles to read to 'fix' what is broken by uploading the product. Too bad they didn't put as much effort into fixing it. Very easy to use--does what it says!
I really used to struggle when emailing pictures to my friends and family. Now, it's actually fun! SendPhotos Gold takes away the hassle of having to deal with large attachments, and somehow makes all the photos small for sending in my email messages. Simply awful
My husband was so frustrated with MANY problems that he finally uninstalled the whole mess. Even getting it off his machine took 2 days. For the first time in his life, he considered suicide.

It slowed my PC down (and I have a new AMD). I cannot access IE without disabling Internet Security Professional (this started out of the blue a couple months ago). I'm afraid to even try to uninstall it. I'll probably end up taking it in to a shop and having them uninstall it - and paying.

I will never buy from Norton again. I thought Norton was supposed to have a reputable product. It's trash.

Great Product... With One Exception... Caveat Emptor
For the past several years I have used various Symantec/Norton products. Furthermore, as an IT professional I typically recommend their products to family and friends, primarily because of the User Friendly consoles.

However, as my subscription was about to expire for updates, I recently upgraded to Norton Internet Security Professional 2004 (NISP2K4) from 2003 (non-Pro) . I encountered a problem which I have found to be fairly common among folks who use multiple user profiles on their machines. I found users of 2000, XP Home, and XP Pro were all affected.

I am running XP Professional w/ three (3) user profiles (one work related, one for personal use, and one for wife). Each profile has it's own separate e-mail account set up in Outlook.

Before loading NISP2K4, I was not experiencing any problems. Following the installation, whenever I start Outlook after switching profiles, I receive the message listed below:

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information.

Troubleshooting Steps: I initially performed an Uninstall (including shared files) and then performed a Custom Install, selecting a single configuration for all profiles on the machine. Still receiving error messages.

Conducted the following Google search: (Norton Internet Security 2004 Outlook Runtime Error terminate)

Based upon some of the postings I read, this is a widespread and common problem with users of machines with more than one profile. I found a work around which disables the Norton Anti Spam toolbar, but still am seeking permanent solution which would leave the toolbar intact and not generate the error message.

If this problem is not resolved soon and integrated into future updates of Internet Security Pro 2004, I hope it will be integrated into the 2005 release and since I complained we might receive a free upgrade.

Sitting here thinking about it a little more, I realize that the problem may be specifically with the Anti-Spam portin of the suite. Will update with any responses I get from Symantec/Norton Tech Support.

Gives meaning to the word 'safe'
This is very good. My pc has never been faster, and more safe. Plus you get Norton Antivirus Professional 2004 for free with this! Very good protection and regularly updated. Firewall gets a Truestealth rating on Gibon Research's ShieldsUp! test (https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2).
Only problem with the popup blocker (which works just fine by the way) is that some sites that use popups to navigate don't work. Luckily you can define not only what sites should be allowed to display popups, but also what PART of the site. It is possible to have the main site display popups and another part blocked.
I have seen people having problems with installing it. The problem seems to be that after installing and rebooting the program does not start, only a tray icon with a red cross. Pointing at this icon causes it to dissapear. Also, it is impossible to activate and register the program. I have a solution so more people can enjoy this fine program (cause you shouldn't expect much help from Symantec)
This solution only works for Windows XP. Sorry...
First, uninstall EVERY Symantec program you've got. After you are CLEAN of those programs, do the following:

A. C:\Program Files\Symantec (this could already be removed)
A. C:\Program Files\Common Files. Delete the Symantex Shared map.
C. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data. (If Application Data isn't visible, enable 'view hidden files in Map options). Delete the Symantec map COMPLETELY.

D. Each account that the programs have been used on also have files (check all of them). See C:\Documents and Settings\(enter user-name here)\Application Data. Delete the Symamtec map.
E. ****These are register deletes. It is advisable to make a backup before you do this****
Open the Regedit (type Regedit in the Execute window(or whatever that is in English, I have a Dutch version). (Or go to Task Manager, New Task, and typ Regedit).
Now go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE. Delete the Symantec map.
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and delete the Symantec map here.

I would do a reboot at this point. After that, install Internet Security. This time, the registration window will appear.

Bad Product For Developers..
The "Norton/Symantic" Shepard is much worse than the "Adware" Wolf. If you are a developer or need access to local development tools such as IIS, DON'T INSTALL THIS PRODUCT. I'm sorry I didn't read the Amazon reviews before I installed. It'll kill your machine's speed, IIS localhost and you'll either have to reformat OR IF YOUR LUCKY Restore to an earlier restore point. - (thanks to windows XP restore). I was lucky. Worst part is that there's no way to get a refund. I can't imagine how a large company like Symantec could put out such an ill conceived product - and even worse - a very sick help-and-support department. Talk about internet wolves. Get McAffee for antivirus and ZoneAlarm for Internet Security. Much better.

Norton support has really deteriorated
I am on Amazon tonight to look up alternatives to Norton Anti-Virus because of their poor maintenance. (They have outsourced their maintenance, I think to India, and there is such difficulty and so many emails exchanged to try to get understanding and answers that I eventually just gave up on the anti-spam package and will never buy it again. I have had better results with the corporate version of anti-virus, but even with the business edition I have to wait very lengthy times to get to a customer service representative, but the ones I have gotten have been really great. But they are sitting at a phone right here in the USA. I have been a long time giving up on Norton because of past history. I started with windows back in the days of Windows 3.1 and Norton had wonderful software that filled the gaps in Windows and made the Windows experience better. I was also treated extremely badly when I tried to complain to the corporate/sales people about my dislike of and disapproval of outsourcing. The person ultimately hung up when I asked that my comments be relayed to her superiors. All of that being said, I feel my instincts were right and I am not even going to consider Norton, especially for a combination product. I also feel that the quality of the products are worse. They used to be much easier to configure and get working. These problems started before their firewall product, but that one was a particularly difficult product to deal with compared to many products in Norton's pass. Much better than McAfee Spam Killer
Running several web sites, I get between 600 and 1,000 spam emails a day. I had been running SpamKiller from McAfee and was having trouble after 6-7 months of usage. Found the Norton AntiSpam 2004 and bought/downloaded it right away from their web site.

Im running my PC on Win XP and use it with Outlook Express 6 and it works great, out of the box it was removing 80-90% of the spam from my email, at very high accuracy. Plus, I have not experianced any crashes. McAfee SpamKiller software would crash on heavy spam days.

After running Norton AntiSpam now for about a month, with a little "training" via the "this is spam" thing, it easily removes +95% of the spam from my email on the first pass, and I am very pleased with AntiSpam 2004.

You should note that I connect to the Internet via Earthlink and use their medium level spam filter that removes "known spam" (about 20-30% of the spam load, but not all) in addition to Norton AntiSpam. This combo seems to work the best for me.

I had 3 cans of spam in my pantry. I installed this software in my dresser & the cans are still there. Enough said.

Works for me
I have been using this product for about six months now and have had great results. It works well with Outlook Express. It doesn't catch everything, but it does catch many spam messages and filter them into a spam folder. My only complaint is that it only works with my pop account, not with my Hotmail account that I read in Outlook Express.

Do bother - More trouble than help from Symantec
This product does not work with MS Outlook 2002. It crashed the email program every time when it was first opened right after having "Fast User Switched" in WinXP Pro. Not worth the pain of dealing with email tech support either!

I won't buy any Symantec products ever again! I am ditching them after this. Their products have gotten worse every year!

Symantec should be ashamed
How far the mighty have fallen.

The Norton name used to be a gold standard--you could buy and run such software with confidence. But it has been losing its luster since Symantec took over and with Norton Anti-Spam, it has hit a new low.

I bought NAS based upon the high reviews it received in PC Magazine--and because it came free in a rebated upgrade for Norton Anti-Virus (which, fortunately, is still worthy of the Norton name).

NAS NEVER worked properly with my routine Eudora 6.x setup. I installed, uninstalled, reinstalled. The NAS folder never appeared. The NAS toolbar was only half-functional; tooltips were missing as were labels for the icons in the Tools menu. NAS couldn't find my Address Book to import.

Symantec's tech support was useless. The advice: Uninstall and reinstall NAS. Uninstall Eudora (!) and reinstall using default settings. Yeah, like I'm going to risk losing all my e-mail data to solve Symantec's QA problem.

Skip this one. It's not ready for prime time--or any time, for that matter. ... Read more
