Most impressive is Direct Dictation, which allows users to dictate text directlyinto AppleWorks, Microsoft Windows, Outlook Express, or Internet Explorer. Justplug the microphone into the USB port on your Mac, put on the headphones, andadjust the SpeakPad so that it's about an inch from your mouth. Tell ViaVoicewhat application to choose, and start dictating. Over time, the system will getbetter at recognizing your voice, and dictation response time will shorten. TheEnhanced Edition has a 64,000 word vocabulary, and features specializedvocabularies for users who work in computers, business and finance, "chatter'sjargon," and cuisine.

To use the Internet, just say, "Surf the Web," and then tell ViaVoice whatbookmarked site you'd like to go to. The user interface is consistent with theMac Human Interface Guidelines. Corrections can be made with your voice--nokeyboard strokes are necessary--and, if you need the system's attention for acommand, pause and say, "Computer."

Good product, but updates are a must
This is a good product overall and works well for me now that it is installed. (Perhaps it is just my "clean Midwest accent".) The manual states that the software does not support G3 upgrade cards, but my PowerLogix card works fine with the software so far.

Cons: Lots of little problems requiring update and system tweaking.

I found that updates proved critical for the software to load and work properly on my machine. After purchase, go to the IBM website for the product (see info included with the software) to request the latest update CD. This is a reason to be cautious about buying an opened box version of this (on eBay, for instance): You will need a unique support code from the back of the manual to request the update CD or to get technical help. The update is important if you wish to use the program with Word 2001.

If you have problems installing, go to the IBM website for info and updates as there are strange little problems with the product, like having to reset your system time zone to New York in order to install. (?) This is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. These problems should have been taken care of in the testing stage and I found them quite annoying to take care of in order to install the program. ... Read more

Good News
Well, the good news is that it works just fine outside of AOL. I use standard dial-up ISP's with Internet Explorer and Netscape. Internet Cleanup does what it claims. It cleans history and cache and cookies. Like the previous reviewer, I agree that it is easy to install and configure. One feature that I like is that cookies that I want to keep are easily "locked" and are skipped over during cookie cleaning.

Not for AOL Users
I purchased On-Track Internet Cleanup Version 2.0 and found it easy to install and very easy to configure. My first test was to check to see if it cleaned up my internet track while on AOL version 7.0. It did not. All of my history is very much intact.

Customer Service was very responsive via e-mail and suggested trying various options outside the program. When these failed to fix the problem they forwarded me to second level service which then suggested I contact AOL 7.0.

If I had known that this product doesn't work with AOL, I would have purchased it. ... Read more

Just what you need with no frills.
The 'Essentials' version of Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 (DNS) has the core features but none of the extras. There is really no point in getting the 'standard version' over this as the standard version only has four extra features that you probably would not use much, if at all, anyway.

What matters here is that the speech recognition engine in DNS is excellent and quick to set up and use, and the core speech recognition engine is the same for all the DNS 7 variants. The time you put in through use to train it is time well spent, and you can speak at a normal pace with very high quality results. OK, if you try to use it in a noisy environment you will get problems, but use a bit of common sense and patience and you get great results.

If you want to use DNS with a dictation machine then you have to go for the 'Preferred or Professional' versions, likewise if you want to have your words read back to you (text to speech) But if you just want to do the basics such as dictating letters, essays, memos, or email, then DNS Essentials has all you need.

If you are spending your own money and don't really need the advanced features then go for DNS Essentials, if it is someone else's money, or you really need the extra advanced features then get the preferred or professional.
