Excellent Concept, just a bit confusing to learn...
I purchased the Dragon NaturallyMobile system for dictating away from my office, and it has fulfilled all of my expectations. The unit is ergonomic, useful, compact, and fully capable. Further, with additional memory cards, its storage capacity is virtually unlimited. The only downside, in my opinion, is the intuitiveness of the download feature. Upon returning to the office, a one button download feature would be helpful. However, all things considered, this is an excellent product worthy of investigation by those professional who live and die by the dictaphone. ... Read more

Ripped by Qualcomm (Eudora)
"This is the by far worst experience I've had with a software company. Eudora is a buggy and convoluted program and so is the way the company is run. Expect voice mail to hang up on you and email tech support to take 3 weeks. Upon discovering all of this I quickly requested a refund which I've never gotten. They emailed their "return request" form called "letter of destruction" (???) to me at an incorrect email address. Later, they got it right but when I snail mailed the form back to them they lost it and then would not refund me because it was past 30 days. Beware."

Unreliable with high volumes of email, weak spam guard
Eudora 3.x and 4.x become unreliable with thousands of emails in the Inbox. The symptom is a message saying that the Inbox table of contents is corrupt, and offering to rebuild. If you say YES you will probably loose all your email permanently! The correct answer is to say no, exit Eudora, then use File Find to locate inbox.toc and delete this file, which will delete the table of contents but not the email. Then Eudora can recover.

Another suggestion that has improved the reliability for me is to have an automatic filter that copies all messages from Inbox into Inboxsafe, which might be slightly less vulnerable to corruption. The last suggestion is to make sure the boxes don't get very full. Don't take vacations :(

Regarding spamguard, there is no spamguard built in to Eudora. I have set up filters that detect and delete common spam, but have not been able to figure out how to automatically forward this spam to spamcop.

Talking max Version 2.0
You want a pet but don't want the hassle of pet care, what do you do? Well you might want to check out Talking Max 2 by Lernout and Hauspie and enter the world of virtual pets. Talking Max 2 is easy to install and you'll be up and running in now time flat.

The application comes with a tutorial that will show you how to make Max talk and work. The tutorial is a definite must if you are going to get this application to run correctly. The configuration is easy and the software does come with a microphone.

The microphone is small and easy to find a place for; the small drawback is distance and location. I found that if I turned my back to the microphone Max had trouble understanding commands. A better more wide range microphone would ease this problem.

While the application is cute and fun to have around, for the home business computer this might become a distraction. Children will certainly enjoy themselves and this software does make a great gift. With a few minor adjustments I can see this product in a great number of households.

Multipurpose Communication Program
This the most complete professional communications program I have used in my 25 years of computer experience. Your computer becomes a fax/voice mail/video conferencing machine.

it works just fine
some folks have had trouble with the product I see but if you have a modem that is compatable it works without problem- it took me a while to get everything set up because it is complex software but once working it gave me the equivalent of a good in office receptionist

But be sure to have a compatable modem before you start

modems are unavailable or no longer supported
i have tried compro version 2 and had to go back to my old speaker phone and answering machine

so i upgraded to version 5
same thing ..bound and determined to make it work .. 4 modems
later (communicate points at the modems)

one modem manufacturers tech support told me to give up on the software and move on

being a little hard headed i hired a certified technician to come to my office to straighten it out, he removed sound cards, configured, re-configured, tried all 4 of the modems i had purchased, tried windows 98, windows me, downloaded drivers from obscure web sites, smoked a pack of cigarettes and left
scratching his head
so..before you buy this software, try to find a modem from the list at 01com.com look over the list very carefully to see if has the features you want
then try to find the modem. don't bother going to local super store they only sell current, supported hardware
it is not on the shelf i assure you
try the auctions
then..... try to find support for the outdated modem or updated drivers....
so it is back to the old answering machine i guess

Sadly the worse purchase I 'ever' made...
I made it a point to come here and write this review. But one star is wrong... it should be 'negative' 5 stars! Perhaps I can spare someone else the nightmare that I endured.

I'm disabled and depend on phone communications to make a living. I wanted the best. After 3 months, 2 modems, at least 100 hours of frustration and a dozen emails to the support department -- this software sits on the shelf collecting dust! It is completely unusable. They assured me that it would provide basic phone functionality with my current modem (Creative Blaster) by email 'before I bought it'... but it does not and 'after I bought' they're story changed.

Hear's what you're buying: conversations fade out (you think the other person paused but no...), you must adjust the volume between dialing and talking or your ears will bleed (the dialing beep can be heard in the next city), it won't 'beep' after the answering machine message (you have to add your own), it doesn't notify you when a message is waiting, if you link it to Outlook it zaps Outlook every time you look up a number, and on occasion it cuts messages off at 3 seconds... and there's more. The over all design is terrible, its hard to use and its completely over engineered.

'After' I bought it they said 'oh, won't work with that modem'. I switched to my 2nd PC which had 'approved modem' on their list... same thing! Which says to me that they would have me go out and purchase another modem and install it for nothing. The next thing they told me was, 'Oh, you must not use your sound card' - well, who needs multimedia anyway. BTW, freeware works fine with my modem and sound card... *freeware*!

Perhaps, if you work down the modem list and get just the right one, devote your entire sound system to Communicate! i2000 and devote the next 3 months of your life to messing with all this... you might be able to phone home! I never even got to try the other features.

Of course I'm beyond the refund period. I'm stuck, they won't refund my money (they got me!). Money truly wasted but it is the 'time' I wasted on it that really cost me.

I'd sell it cheap but... I wouldn't do that to my worst enemy.

Yes... Commnicate! I2000's features sound so nice don't they -- unfortunately you need to press 'redial' on this one and move on... as quickly as possible!

Compatability Issues
I have yet to resolve the compatability issues with this software and the modem. Anyone interested in the software should contact the i2000 technical support team for a list of modems that are compatible with the software. Though the software boasts of the feature rich content. Best product on the market for remote control and file acces
Not only did I get remote control on an XP box BEHIND A FIREWALL, I can access files remotely from Laplink's Surfup service. Service is the key word here, I don't know any other place offering network services when you buy their off-the-shelf product. Laplink runs an ILS server so I can connect to my Laplink PC from anywhere on the Internet, and they run a firewall service so I can get to my home PC - behind a firewall. It's as easy as checking a box and creating a login-entry.

AND they have a Surfup web service so i can access files VIA A WEB BROWSER from anywhere ! Beat THAT !

It's simple, it works, I love it.

I have Laplink versions on several systems now...
and have been using it for years with zero problems.

Remote control works fine, even over lousy 20K connections, and the "speedsync" feature makes it practical to transfer files in bulk over standard phone lines.

I routinely use it to make "service calls" without leaving my desk, and to perform periodic incremental backups of remote computers. The software's actually overkill for simple "same room" file transfers on Win 9x+ systems, but for a complete remote access package, this is hard to beat.

It works for me--that's all I ask!

I have a Compaq Armada Pentium 1590DMT (150 mHz) laptop with 80 MB RAM, and my desktop is an AMD-K6-2 (350 mHz)with 64 MB RAM. Both machines have the Windows ME operating system. They link together with no problem at all using LapLink. I use the parallel ports for the link. I've never had a problem, and the application works exactly as advertised.

That's all you can ask of a product.

Easiest communications package to use
I had used PCanywhere for a number of years, but find that product to be inferior in its connections. LapLink is very easy to install and use. Had absolutely no problems in transferring files or using remote control.

Laplink, the Long Downward Spiral
Laplink was the first to offer travellers dos software to transfer files from laptop to desktop and make backup up disks that were clones of the main hard drive. In addition, the dos version had a batch file function which could be used to backup only selected files. It ran flawlessly. Laplink 2000 and now, Laplink Gold,unfortunately are not worthy successors to the dos version. My experience is with Win98 and Laplink 2000 and Gold seem to have problems with it. Initially, the installation for Voice Express Professional 5.0 seemed abit daunting--the package comes complete with a "read me first" pamphlet,headphones, and a detailed user's guide. However, it seems that an easierstart-up process was on the developers' minds when they upgraded this product, so theinstallation itself was not so scary. After setting up our mike and creating ourspeaker profile, we were able to start dictating. It is important to keep in mind that Voice Express only works with Windows-based applications. I love it!
I upgraded from the advanced to the professional edition because I wanted to use the voice recorded macros. I use it on both my home computer and my notebook. The supplied microphone (not USB)worked great with my Gateway Solo laptop.

Not For Laptops
I wish I could say that I was not typing this review, but rather dictating it. I have no clue how this product really performs, because I just found out from L&H technical support that the mic they provide does not work with laptops PC's. I am told that I need to purchase a USB mic that will cost an other $50.00, which they do not mention in their documentation. I am sure that this will hold true on all Voice Recognition products and not just L&H, but they should have been upfront with as customers. So, If you are thinking of purchasing this product make sure you purchase a USB mic that will not get interference from you laptop. I will write a follow up if I decide to get the other mic. ...
