The USB connection didn't work at all when first installed. I gave up and went to the Serial connection only to discover that it was spontaneously disconnecting every transfer after about two minutes. When I went back to solve the USB problem, I found that telephone tech support ...available only by appointment. While the documentation included with the software was useless for troubleshooting and solving the problems, the online tech support (eventually) yielded enough detailed info to get things going. I now (at this minute) have the USB connection working with transfer rates at upwards of 3 Mbits per second. Oh, I also encountered some files that would not transfer becuase the path was too long. What's that about? If windows can handle the file name, why can't Laplink? ... Read more | |

It's not perfect. I frequently have to use the mouse and the keyboard for absolute accuracy, but it beats typing by far. You can train unusual words in no time. It's only 99 dollars and worth a shot. You have to have a computer of greater than 750 mH with at least 128 RAM.

SpamCatcher comes in two flavors. There is an integrated Outlook version which adds a button in Outlook and a Universal option for basically any other POP mail program (eg. Eudora, Netscape, etc.). I use Pegasus Mail and the program works flawlessly with it. There is a slight initial delay every time I check email (2-10 sec), but otherwise there is no noticeable slow down (DSL connection, Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz. Notebook computer). The program uses a variety of methods to detect spam, ranging from fuzzy logic to heuristics. However, the most powerful tool of the program might be their SpamCatcher Network (over 1 million strong according to the box). This network works by having people report spam that aren't filtered. This is entered into their database so that other users will now have that spam filtered. If you use Outlook, you can report spam emails that didn't get caught to the SpamCatcher network, but if you aren't using Outlook, you can still check your email against the network. The program has other features such as an approved and blocked list of emails/domains, or the ability to "bounce" an email back to the sender (Outlook only). I get a lot of spam everyday, and this program brings order to my inbox. While SpamCatcher is fairly basic in terms of options, it works. And that's what matters most. I highly recommend it. ... Amazon.com Review iHateSpam takes only a few moments to install, but the setup process can be somewhat time-consuming. After installation, iHateSpam mines your Outlook contacts and any folders you choose to look for e-mail addresses you do not consider to be spam. It then creates a "friends" list so all the e-mails you do want to receive will be left untouched by the program. Conversely, iHateSpam also has an "enemies" list to which you can add unwanted e-mails that you receive and the sending addresses will be blocked by iHateSpam. You can also bounce an e-mail back to the sender, which includes a message saying that your addresses is unavailable, thus tricking the sender into deleting your e-mail address from their database. While all of these features seem attractive in theory, we found that the program has some drawbacks in actual use. First, the setup process becomes redundant for the person who uses Outlook for business purposes. It is extremely difficult and time-consuming to manage a friends list when you receive and send e-mails to hundreds of coworkers and associates. Further, creating an enemies list becomes a delicate process as you do not want to inadvertently have a new customer or contact be labeled as an enemy, even though you have not received e-mail from them before. All in all, iHateSpam would most likely work very well for someone who uses Outlook for personal e-mails only and who is merely trying to get rid of the junk so they can keep in touch with their friends and family. But for anyone who is already managing a wide database of contacts, it creates more trouble than it removes. --Kendra Hayden Reviews (55)
One nice feature of the program is it allows you to "bounce" unwanted emails back to their source. This sends a return email that looks like its from the main email router that your address is invalid, which hopefully causes it to be removed from the spammer's mailing list sometimes. I don't know how effective this really is, but they're a certain amount of satisfaction in bouncing their message back to them and clogging up their mailbox with unwanted messages too. My only problem with it is that since I only have 128 megs of RAM with XP, after some months the spam filters got so large my email ran quite slow and my hard disk started thrashing a lot. I was surprised the combination of Outlook and I Hate Spam! had gotten that memory intensive, but the spam filters update regularly from the web, and after a while the filter database gets quite big, and every email gets compared against it, which takes some time. Anyway, over the last several years my spam load has probably increased 10 times, to the point where I'm getting 10 times as much spam as actual email. That plus the memory issues I was experiencing meant my email downloads were taking a long time even though I only get 2-3 emails a day, and I was getting 20-30 spam messages. That's not much compared to several people I know who get 100 spam emails a day, but still, I finally decided to bite the bullet and change my email account name. You can usually do this through the webmail interface for your ISP. Mine is Earthlink, so I went to their Account Maintenance page, selected eMail, and went through the steps to change my email address. Now I get zero spam and no more viruses either, which were getting more and more frequent, since I'd gotten on probably dozens of spammer mailing lists. Recently I got on the ones for Viagra and was getting lots of those. Then I started getting the ones for penis enlargement products, which I suppose was only inevitable after getting on the Viagra lists. Oh well, that's modern life for you. Anyway, it was at that point that I decided to change my email name. For some people this isn't practical for professional reasons or business reasons, but I'm retired so although I have about 100 correspondents, it's no big deal. I sent out a message to my entire distribution list that my email name was changing after four or five years, and to make a note of it. Of course, 3/4 of those people won't do that and will fail to put the new name in their address book, but oh well. Anyway, I recommend you do this too if you possibly can. At this point I don't even need I Hate Spam!, but I still run it anyway since it's so much faster now. One last word of caution. I got all that spam because when I first got online about 5 years ago I not too wisely signed up at various webpages for various online information services such as electronic magazines, or information updates on various subjects I was interested in, and other free stuff, and after awhile, everybody and anybody had my email address. So be careful what you sign up for. Otherwise you'll have more email than you know what to do with. Another way this happens is if someone you know gets one of those Outlook email viruses that sends emails out to everybody in your address book. Now you'll be getting emails forever with that virus in it since you'll be on the list of people to email. This is one reason why it's important to have an anti-virus program too in addition to a spamkiller. Overall, a fine program, although if you take my recommendation to change your email name, you probably won't need a spam filter. :-)

I checked and found the original version on sale. However, I checked the Novatix web site and found a free download trial version and also an update: Send Photos Gold, for sale. I tried the evaluation version - an 18MB download. Only try this if you have a broadband Internet connection! I installed it and it worked very well. I tried it first using Microsoft Outlook 2000 as my mail program. Configuring that led me to an process of installing Microsoft Collaboration Data Objects (CDO). I could not be bothered to find my MS Office CD so I took ther risk and installed it from the Novatix web site. I am always nervous about this kind of thing because Microsoft software is so complex and brittle, but so far it works and nothing else seems to have broken. The warnings about "do this at your own risk" gave me pause however. The main point of the program is to enable "the rest of us" to email pictures easily. I was impressed that I could mail multiple high resolution photos from my digital camera and the software built a page containing compressed but still high quality images. Their compression algorithms are excellent and completely invisible. I invited my non-expert friend to try the evaluation version. She installed it and used it with Outlook Express. Her first messages had the text but no photos which confused us. The problem was solved by closing and restarting Outlook Express and since then everything has been fine. We tried some simple photo editing: cropping, adjusting brightness and so on. That is no problem and probably fixes 99% of all amateur photos. What a contrast in simplicity from, say, Adobe Photoshop Elements. A fine program in its way, but so complex! And this is the "simplified" version... The other major feature is the stationery. I am old fashioned and go for the plain and simple look, but I am sure many will enjoy all the options. Lastly we tried using it with Yahoo and Hotmail. Here Send Photos uses its own mail server to send the photos, but with a "sender" field that makes the message look like it comes from me. That's a clever solution to allow Send Photos to work with any email system, even if they are web based and use proprietary protocols. I have two concerns about this: 1. If Novatix goes out of business, their mail server will go away and that use of the program won't work any more. You'd still be able to use it with Outlook (Express) because there it uses your own mail server. 2. It seems to be possible to send photos on behalf of any user. This is because Novatix can't check the validity of an email address, nor whether I have the password for it. This seems to be dangerous and I did not see anything about it in the Send Mail otherwise excellent online help. I heartily recommend this program for non-expert users.
With this program, you don't need to be a computer expert, quite the contrary, I think that anybody can create stunning picture emails with it in no time. The best part for me? Emailing a single picture as an attachment used to create an email that was typically 500kB or more. With SendPhotos I can now send 30 pictures (yep, I've done it :) in a message and still be under 500kB. That makes it so much faster to send or receive pictures. And the recipients of my emails don't need to install any special software to see the photos. Highly recommended.

I've now upgraded to WinXP and I can't get it to work. It installs fine, recognizes and initiates my modem, but it won't send out a fax, nor will it let me make any settings changes. It acts as if there is no phone line connected. Also, good luck finding any support whatsoever. The original maker Communique, doesn't even list this product on their website. Stay far, far away!
Unfortunately, my modem has no voice features so I cannot enjoy the voice features of this product yet. Even treated as a fax-only software, it is still a great deal doing the same as Winfax does at $60 less.
