Excellent
Exchange is an excellent email server program. Running on Windows 2000 Server with all the service packs applied, it performs only as good as how its managed. The sever must have a VSAPI capable anti-virus and anti-spam software. Managing Exchange requires more than average network administrator skills and a good deal of knowledge of Active Directory. Additionally, Outlook clients can benefit from customizations and email anywhere via Outlook Web Access.

No competition.
This is by far the best mail server available on the market - the Active Directory integration alone makes this worth the upgrade from Exchange 5.5. The Outlook Web Client, storage scalability and other enhancements make administration a lot easier for me, and keep my clients happy.

Excellent piece of server software in every respect.

Good recognition, but very unstable program
This is my first experience with dictation software, so I don't have anything to compare it to. All I can do is offer observations of how it has worked for me.

Training this software takes quite a long time; a few hours if you want to get maximum performance. I actually wouldn't mind so much, except that you need to retrain it every time you buy a new microphone or work in an environment with a different sound level. For me, this has meant having to train the software several times. Reading the provided material so the software can sample your voice is actually kind of fun, but after you've done it a few times, it is exceptionally tedious.

The headphones which come with the software are adequate, but I've heard you can get better recognition with a higher quality set.

My biggest complaint about the software is that it consumes a tremendous amount of system resources on your computer. I can not be running any other programs at the same time, or it crashes. I am using a computer with a 1.40 GHz Centrino processor with 512MB of RAM. Even when I am running only IBM ViaVoice and MS Word, I clearly run into performance issues. After a while my computer starts to bog down and I have to restart it.

Another complaint is that it types with unusual quirks which it seems it would have been easy for IBM to have prevented. For example, it often fails to capitalize the first word in a sentence, especially when dictating in chat software. And for some reason, when you dictate for a passage to be in quotation marks, it leaves a space between the quotation marks and the words inside the quote. And sometimes, for some words, it is impossible to get the software to recognize that you are dictating a word, and not issuing a command.

IBM's ViaVoice is considerably cheaper than the competition. Unfortunately, I have no idea if the higher price of the competing products is justified by being a higher-quality product. ViaVoice is probably adequate for most casual dictating needs. If you've never used dictation software before, it's really impressive the way it can usually understand what you're saying. The more you use it, the better it gets at recognizing what you are saying, and the better you will get to at enunciating in a way it can understand. After a few months of casual usage, I would say my software is hitting 90 to 95% accuracy.

The bottom line is, for the price, this is pretty good software (though I sure do wish it was more stable). If you use dictation a lot and know that the competing products are better quality, they would be worth the price. But for a casual user, this software is fine. ... Read more

Fantastic
I see on this site that most people did not like this product. Well, I did. At first it was a dissapointment, but after I did lots of voice testing and corrections, it was great. No hands are needed and it is relitivley fast. Great Buy.

Crashes, crashes, crashes - DO NOT BUY
Installed ViaVoice 10 in Windows XP Pro...

And sometimes it opens and sometimes it doesn't. Mainly doesn't.

Problem:

After launching Dragon or ViaVoice and clicking a link in one of the menus, the system locks up or freezes. Other symptoms include Dragon NaturallySpeaking's Select-and-Say or ViaVoice's dictation and commands fail in Microsoft Office XP applications, such as Word and Microsoft Outlook.

Cause:

Microsoft Office XP's "Alternate User Input" installs a background process called CTFMON.exe which can interfere with Dragon or ViaVoice. The following information was taken from the Microsoft website:

"...Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies...."

And you can get NO, repeat, NO, help from ScanSoft.

IBM viavoice usbpro has major conflict issues with mcafee internet security suite(6.)Ibm redirects you to scansoft that has a lousy support which is charged to your credit card after the first free query;their online knowledge database is sparse and the tech personell seem to be reading their answers from algorhythms with background knowledge barely above the average customer's; Mcafee has a more extensive online database but no free tech support phone calls; problems of conflict between the softwares were related to TCP/IP port (viavoice apparently works through an open port) and to speech engine conflicts;none could resolve these issues;such issues in my opinion can only be resolved by interdisciplinary programmers;short of this the choice is one software verses the other

Terrible Support - Many Installation Problems
An earlier ViaVoice installation 3 years ago went fine and the product was pretty useful and accurate enough for my purposes.

ViaVoice version 10 however has been a nightmare. I still have not been able to install it on a Win2K-SP4 computer. I am a fairly advanced computer programmer/systems person with 20+ years of experience.

Support is virtually non-existent from Scansoft. My 30 days of free support from IBM where I purchased the product has not been honored. All support has to come from Scansoft.

Great features, if you can access them. I am seriously thinking of demanding my money back. Washington State has some very consumer friendly laws regarding "Fitness for Purpose", one more reason I am grateful to live in the Northwest.

Incompatible with Word 2003
I have used ViaVoice Ver10 Pro USB for a little over a year with great results. On a fast computer system it keeps up with you almost no matter the speed of your speaking. It does occassionally crash. There seems to be a problem with it writing back to memory. IBM was unable to find the problem. It had done this on other computers as well. I've used it with MS Office XP Pro on my old computer. I upgraded to a new computer with MS Office Small Business Ed 2003 only to find that ViaVoice is not compatible with the components. I spent $9.95 in tech support only to be told that! They said that they plan to put that info on their website(Scansoft is now the tech support for this product). To date they haven't. Guess, they want to sell as many copies as possible before they make a patch. Anyway, if you're planning to use this with Office 2003 or higher it will not work and tech support will do nothing to help you except take your money.
Update: 5/5/2004: I contacted ScanSoft to find out if they are making a patch to make it compatable with Word 2003. Their standard answer is "We're working on it." If you go to their website you will find that they still haven't put in a disclaimer that it doesn't work with all Word editions. It just says that it does work with Word. I wonder how many refunds they are giving out for false advertising? I'm also surprised that the major PC magazines haven't picked up on this. ... Read more

Wrong Product for panther
I can't get the microphone to even record. I think this version is incompatible with Panther, or I may have a faulty product. I am a very experienced Mac user and actually read manuals and web sites for support. It's possible that the correct product is actually IBM ViaVoice for Mac X USB, v. 3. It's a $30 upgrade from this version. Neither Scansoft nor Amazon makes this clear from looking at this page!

To give this product a fair review, it needs to be repesented correctly on this site as not being the latest version for Mac.

If I am wrong about this, I will correct it in a further review very soon.

Has never worked well in OS X
Due to a spinal cord injury, my hands do not work. Obviously, typing is difficult, especially extended word processing. I use my computer 8-10 hours/day for work, email, etc., and frequently need to type more than a few lines. So, Viavoice seems to be the obvious choice for me. I have owned viavoice and each upgrade since the first version. Despite updates, this program has never worked well on OS X. On a few occasions I have gotten it to operate briefly, but usually it crashes, fails to open, does not respond, or dissappoints me in some other way.

Training the program is a long process, and the fact that I cannot use it now is ridiculous. I consider myself a mac expert, and use many programs. I have never been more frustrated with a program than I am with this one. Support is poor, and updaters are few-and don't help.

Real easy photo software
This is one of the easiest softwares I've ever used for my digital photos. It allows me to edit my photos, add clip art and captions, and make slideshows. The best thing is I can email my slideshows to my family living throughout the U.S. So many features are available and anyone can use it, even my 7 year old daughter.

I just bought Nero PhotoShow Elite and I think it's an excellent program for editing and creating slideshows from my digital pictures.

I tried to burn a CD for use in my TV DVD player and the order of the images was changed from the order in the slide show I had created. I have tried to use the online info and contact the tech support for this product without much luck. No responce from them in 10 days. Perhaps since this is a new product (version 1.0) they aren't up to speed in the tech support department yet, but I would have appreceated an some answer. I will update this if I get the problem solved.

Avoid
Overpriced and underpowered..... This software is more annoying then anything else. You practically have to turn off every setting to get your networked printers and network games to work, for example.

A poorly designed product
It took me a day to install this product. If you do choose to use this product be sure to uninstall all other norton virus and internet security products even tho the instructions say that norton 2003 is uninstalled automatically--it isin't!! My computer now crashes frequently since I began using this product. My advice is to stay clear of this product until they get it fixed. One other point--don't count on getting any technical help form Symantec--they don't even have decent free help installing the product let alone using it.

Stay as far away from this as you can....
I recommended this for my father based on my experience with previous versions. I wish I'd done some research first....

My father installed it on his desktop (a Dell running WinME) without any problems. When the system asked him to reboot, he said he'd do it later because it was late, and simply shut down the computer. The next morning he discovered the worst.

When he tried to boot up the computer, it started booting up normally, but when it got to his desktop, that's all he got - a blank desktop. No icons, no start menu, nothing. In fact, CTRL-ALT-DEL shows that nothing is running. Weird huh? Even weirder is that when he tried to go into 'Safe Mode', the exact same thing happens. I'm not sure what NIS 2004 did to his computer, but nothing short of reinstalling his entire system would get it to boot up.

Now comes the fun part - Symantec Technical Support and Customer Service. They don't exist. The only free tech support they have is email based, and run by people in India, who apparently don't speak English. I sent them email after email telling them that the system wouldn't boot up, and every time the sent back replies telling me to go to the 'Start Menu' and go here and there and do this and that. The just didn't get the fact that I couldn't load Windows.

So, I thought I'd give them a call to complain about the terrible tech support. I looked up their number on the internet and called. I got routed around the country to different phone systems, and then sat on hold for over two hours before I finally got frustrated enough to hang up and write the Better Business Bureau. Needless to say, I won't be installing this product on my own computer, and unless Symantec makes some major changes to the base program, won't be buying any more of their products.

If you're a computer guru, you might be able to get it to work, in which case this is a good program. The problem is, I'm a computer guru, and I couldn't make it work...

Waste of Money
This software won't allow my computer to access the internet. No email gets through. All web pages are inaccessible. When the problem first occurred, I disabled the software to go to Symantec's website and followed Symantec's automated online instructions to configure it. This fixed the problem for the rest of that day, but then the problem recurred the next time I rebooted. Symantec's human tech support is $30 per incident! Why should I throw bad money after good? I'm writing this off as a $40 mistake. You're better off with a $40 router and/or some freeware security software. Norton Anti-Virus may be pretty good, but the rest of this Internet Security package sucks.

Disappointed in California
I have been a Norton Internet Security user for years with total satisfaction. Upgrading to the 2004 version has nearly destroyed my Microsoft Outlook - it took hours to get back my previous Emails and more importantly my Address Book. It is still not as it was, but at least I can see everything. My Freecell is totally unusable. Also having problems with Word. The Symantec website has many articles to read to 'fix' what is broken by uploading the product. Too bad they didn't put as much effort into fixing it. Problems with XP
After many days of trying I have finally had to give up the attempt to get this product working with our single machine running XP pro.

There have been two main issues:

Firstly there seems to be issues with the shipped product that requires a download from symantec to fix (blank screen after reboot).

Secondly (and terminally) when a disk check is carried out post install, the machine checks the disk and then hangs. Aborting the check also causes a hang. If you do get a successfull reboot by using Last Known Good then the disk increasingly incorrectly reports file & folder sizes.

No viruses seem to be present (boot sector or otherwise).

Installs via the recommedend Clean Boot method were tried.

Obviously this may be peculiar to the system we were using (we could not find any reference to this type of problem on the Symantec site or elsewhere):

Toshiba Satellite 1800, XP Pro (Retail Upgrade, clean install), NTFS volume, PCanywhere 10.5 from CD.

Pcanywhere seems to work fine in other cofigurations, on other machines that we have tried - win98, win 2k on Compaqs & Panasonics.

I have to agree with other reviews I have read that Symantec products are shipping less and less robust (we also have had problems with NIS 2002).

Never changes
You would think that a product would improve with time -- but no, not pcAnywhere! It is, always has been, and probably always will be deeply flawed. I installed this product on two Windows 2003 Servers. On one of them, the host service kept failing whenever I tried to initiate a file transfer. On the other server, file transfers worked fine but the visual display was a distortion of black and white lines. It's amazing -- every single version I work with has some problem that keeps me from being able to move it into production. And version 10.5 is no exception. Save your money!

Saved my company a lot of $$$$
Being a Systems Engineer for our network users, I love this product. It has made my life so much easier. Instead of walking the end users through some steps over the phone, I just log in and take care of the issue. Here's where the money savings comes in... I no longer have to send a computer in for software issues because someone couldn't follow the instructions and my company doesn't have to pay to fly me to the different sites. The only issue I have ever had is with 10.5 and XP. It always installs fine, but it leaves an item in the tool bar that you can't close (more annoying than anything else). I imagine vers. 11 will fix this. Over all I give this product a BIG thumbs up!

Install PCAnywhere 10.5 on Windows NT at your own risk.
I recently got a new home computer with Windows XP on it. I had currently been using Windows 98 and had PCAnywhere 8.0 running on it as well as on my PC at work running with Windows NT 4.0. It ran perfectly for years, however the only version of PCAnywhere compatible with XP is 10.5.. So, I got this program and decided to load it at work as the documentation said it ran with NT. BIG MISTAKE!!!! Program installed fine, but when I went to reboot my machine at the end of the night it Blue Screened on the reboot. Then it continually rebooted and blue screened. Couldn't bypass it. Tried starting the machine in VGA mode. No good either. Blue screen. Went to Symantec site and there is a known bug with NT and 10.5 that can cause a Blue screen due to some video driver crud. Bottom line, their fix involved installing parallel version of NT on machine and doing all sorts of manual stuff with the Registry. Send my Machine off to company LAN department. Guess what. MACHINE IS TRASHED. Unrecoverable. The have to reimage the entire box. Everything on my machine is gone. Nice of Symantec to (NOT) warn me before I installed about potential problems with NT 4.0. If they had I would have kept my 8.0 on my work PC. Bottom line, I have been without a machine for a day, all my work is lost and I have nothing by disdain for this software. DO NOT install 10.5 on an NT machine if you value your PC. You have been warned.

Slow, slower, slowest!
I've used PC Anywhere in all its iterations. As a professional software analyst, I used to require that all my clients purchase a copy.

But not anymore. My biggest beef is that even when both the host and remote connections are high speed Internet, this product responds too slowly. When using this product, I can click with my mouse, go to the bathroom, get a second cup of coffee and pet my dog before the command will take effect.

I much prefer using WebX or VPN as a tool of choice for remote support.

On the plus side, remote support after hours, while slow, is relatively painless. ... Read more

Getting Pretty Good
I thought that voice recognition software had finally reached the point where I would buy it. Based on my research IBM seemed to be the best. The Standard version really is all you need for dictation of reports, articles, letters, etc. Email will require a more advanced version.

It actually works quite well. The key is to spend time at the beginning to train it to your voice and to correct each error. Now its not going to be like Star Wars (Scotty: "A keyboard, how quaint.") but it works and has greatly reduced my Carpal Tunnel wrist pain.

Very easy to use--does what it says!
I really used to struggle when emailing pictures to my friends and family. Now, it's actually fun! SendPhotos Gold takes away the hassle of having to deal with large attachments, and somehow makes all the photos small for sending in my email messages.
