3-0 out of 5 stars No Terminal Services In This Edition
Be forewarned if you are wanting to use this as an application server. The Terminal Services included in this edition are limited to two users and will NOT run in Application Mode. Microsoft claims this limited for security purposes, but you can do this on their full blown product, so I think it is more for $ purposes (they want more). As far as the product goes, the value is pretty good. You get an Exchange server, POP3 mail connector (this distributes email from a POP3 account to the proper Exchange account), fax sharing software, and Outlook 2003. Most things can be done through the Wizard driven interface, which can be a hinderance if you are trying to customize the product. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review

WinFax Pro 10.0 shatters the idea of truth in advertising. The currentversion of the king suite of faxing software has many of the user-friendlyfeatures that have made WinFax Pro the de facto fax application. However, itsbox copy makes a few promises the software can't keep, so buyers beware: ifyou're running Windows XP or Office XP (or both), you're looking for trouble ifyou purchase this otherwise excellent program.

WinFax Pro is full of features, including a cover page designer, an automatedbackup manager, a network fax-sharing module, and more. Its interface will befamiliar and comfortable to anyone who uses Microsoft Outlook or OutlookExpress. The Message Manager--where you do most of your faxing work--is dividedinto Outlook-style panes, with several folders that include a receive log, asend log, an outbox, and a wastebasket in the upper left, a list of faxes in theupper right, and a multipurpose pane on the bottom that lets you view detailsabout a fax or take a quick peek at it.

Opening a fax for viewing invokes a viewer applet, which looks like AdobeAcrobat Reader. It comes complete with a pane of thumbnails down the left sidefor page navigation, with the main document view taking up the larger portion ofthe screen.

You can compose fax documents in any word processor. To fax them, use the mainWinFax Pro interface, a button installed in your Microsoft Word toolbar, or adrag-and-drop desktop icon. WinFax also lets you send faxes as attachmentsthrough Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, or Exchange, which is a mysteriousfeature considering you can send your documents as attachments without WinFaxPro. In any regard, while the feature worked well on a Windows Me machine withOffice 2000, it caused errors and crashes on Windows XP.

Other problems surfaced during testing. Faxing directly through Word XP with thetoolbar button caused crashes. A "photo quality" mode offered in the send moduledoesn't come anywhere close to photo quality. Every time we opened Word XP, anerror dialog appeared; Symantec's tech support said that it occurred because wedidn't have a modem installed. That conversation took place after we'd sentseveral test faxes through our installed modem.

WinFax Pro 10 worked as advertised on our Windows Me system, and it's full ofoutstanding features. However, if you've upgraded to Windows XP or if you'rerunning Office XP, hold off until Symantec patches this program into submission.--Joel Durham Jr. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool
I've used winfax Pro at our ex-office, it completely solved all our faxing problems. So we didnt even needed for a fax machine.

The installation was so easy, it detected the hardware, and all I had to do was pressing the next button, and giving some info about our company. Then I changed the role of the machine in the setup menu, to a fax server. And went to the other computers and installed to all of the other machines. ( There may be a way for an automated setup, but I didnt needed so I am not sure of it.) It detected the fax server and installed it. We had 10 machines on our network, and all the installation process took less than an hour.

We configured the server to forward faxes, even i tought it wouldnt work, it worked fine. The faxes from the banks went directly to accountant department, etc...

We entered all of our customer list to winfax, and started to send faxes to them about our new products. It started faxing, and we went to our home. The next day boss asked us which customers received the fax. I thought I should go into the logs, and search for it. But theres a good designed window, you can see who send the fax to who, at what time, you can configure a report and so on ...

When I looked at the documentation, (Its good documented, you can find all the answers,) I was surprised it even has its own macro language. I didnt tried that but I think theres no fax product that you write down macros.

All was better than I accepted. Since that day our secratary is just reading the her book.

In conclusion, I think its nearly the best product that satisfied me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy Winfax
Absolutely useless. Causes word to lock. Will not uninstall. Symantec fixes don't work. Hours wasted. Don't buy this product.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for average user. Power user beware!
Although I am working around the vast amount of bugs this program carries with it, it does deliver faxes ok. The client/server functionality sucks. The areacode rules are supposed to be set on the server however for some starnage reason they do not work. KB articles on symantecs site only confuse things. HORRIBLE support of this product. I am looking elsewhere for a solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Product
Reading through the reviews, I saw many, many folks had big time problems installing this package. This was especially true for WinXP users.

Using Google I found an OEM CD copy of Version 10.3 for $15 + s/h. At that price I figured I could risk trying it since some reviewers had very good results.

Well, it went on my Dell Dimension 8250 with Win XP Pro without a hitch.

My only comment is: before installation (1) clean out any and all previous versions from your computer; (2) shut down antivirus and firewall applictions (and any other easy to close applications).

It's a great package that does it all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the worst piece of software ever written
I bought this software and installed it on one of my customers machines, I set up a special computer to be a "fax server" to recieve faxes and organize them into different folders, strangely the WinFax will randomly reject faxes, somedays it will refuse to work, somedays it will work great, somedays it will reject 50%, who knows what mood its in. I reformatted the computer so that the only thing installed is Win98 and WinFax, I replaced the modem TWICE, my customer moved to a new office in a different building with a completely different phone line and the product still doesn't work. Total garbage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars E-mail is once again an enjoyable EXPERIENCE!
Outlook, is so revamped, this alone is a worthy upgrade. Three panes in Outlook 2003 make e-mail an enjoyable experience. The Mail Pane holds all of the necessary tools found in prior versions of Outlook such as the Outlook Bar, and the different folders such as inbox, calendar, etc. The second pane gives an expanded view of the different items listed in the Mail Pane, like your incoming mail, contacts and calendar, which makes reading these information resources easier on the eye and productive by providing a better view. Reading your e-mail in the third pane (Preview Pane), the user views the message in portrait layout, more content is seen compared to prior versions. Its even better to view e-mails with "Clear Type" turned on for Windows XP users. Other features such as improved Virus and Spam protection makes Outlook 2003 a great upgrade. Outlook is not placed on the desktop by default, it can also be minimized to the system tray in Windows, for users connected to an Exchange Server, this displays all the network settings available.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worth the cost of the upgrade? Buyer beware.
I like the new layout of the panes in the Outlook 2003 window but is it worth the price of the upgrade? Probably not.
I have run into a few problems since I first rated this product.
I read a couple reviews of the Office 2003 upgrade and found that others felt the Outlook 2003 upgrade is the only part of the new Office suite that is worth the cost and hassle to upgrade. I decide to take their advice (and save $) and only upgrade OL.
Two problems have arisen since then.
    1. The Office Shortcut bar is no longer a part of the Office suite. This is a great disappointment to me because this is one of the great efficiency tools that Windows has to offer. Luckily, Office XP is still installed as Word/Excel/PowerPoint so I still have the bar but the buttons which applied to OL 2003 are no longer available. If you are dependent on this feature as I have become, don't upgrade the full suite or it will disappear.
    2. Because of the conflicting versions of the Office suite that I am using, there isn't full functionality between the programs anymore. For example, I can no longer send the body of a Word/Excel document as the body of an email by simply clicking the "E-mail" on the toolbar in the application. This is more trivial than the first issue.

4-0 out of 5 stars Need to fix PCS
Generally good, but two bugs remain from before:
    1) Outlook PCS, which offers the only hope of exchanging with a PDA contact date organized into subfolders, is so buggy as to be unusable. A little effort by MS could make it great.
    2) Appointments still get totally screwed up if you change time zones on the computer. Have to work around by pretending that you're in your home time zone when you travel, but just change the clock time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great
New interface and features are nice. I use OpenOffice.org instead of Microsoft Office, so a can't comment on the Microsoft Office integration.

Didn't notice and "AdWare" as stated by another reviewer.

I upgraded from Outlook 2000 and it went flawlessly. Found all my Rules, customized folders and Accounts without any setup.

Until the Open Source community provides an alternative on a Microsoft platform, I'll continue to use Microsoft Outlook. For $90.00, you can't beat it.

Thanks for a great product Microsoft.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big improvement, new folder features are great
I use Outlook for managing tasks, contacts, mail and schedules. The new 2003 version is a vast improvement, at least in look and feel. The folder management is revised to split the window on the left to "favorite folders" and "all folders." Folders are a great way to organize and store emails, so this is a welcome change.

Then, the mail is organized by "today", "yesterday", and then the days of the week and back weeks. This helps to organize and trim out the inbox, which can get cluttered. For this attractive new feature alone, it's worth upgrading.

The look of the user interface is consistent with Windows XP, with the snazzy shaded bars. Nice to work with. Other improvements --the calendar also has been expanded, and tasks and contacts have new features, too. For example, the mail reading pane is larger, less scrolling required (yay!) and you can organize messages by subject thread to delete an entire series. Pretty cool.

If you are a dedicated Outlook user, the upgrade is well worth it, in my opinion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars works for me!
I do some pretty arcane dictation with lots of technical vocabulary, and have found the system up to my demands. I have worked at training the system, and it keeps on improving. I do find some of the interfaces a bit awkward to work with compared to the system I use with my PC (Naturally Speaking Standard Edition), but then, I've worked with that system somewhat longer. If the recognition of iListen improves with use as well as Naturally Speaking has, I will change my rating to 5 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be glad I didn't enter this with iListen
I purchased iListen about three years ago. I found that it might have been useful for verbal commands to control computer functions, but it was useless for dictation. I upgraded to version 1.2.1, patiently went through at least three, new "training" sessions, and still was unable to create useable text via verbal input. When iListen kept sending me e-mail solicitations, I offered to upgrade if they could demonstrate that they had improved accuracy. They replied, "Because there are so many variables, and everyone has a different definition of what is acceptable results, all sales of iListen software are final."

My definition of acceptable dictation was that accuracy was sufficient to permit replication upon proof reading. I would accept errors, but not so different from what I had said that I could not reconstruct my text from its translation. It never even came close. Perhaps my voice is incompatible with iListen, and maybe it will translate your speech accurately. In either case, remember, all sales are final. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the upgrade from the free version.
I first used the free version of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE, and found it did a great job finding and removing ad-ware and spy-ware.The trouble was, I would find new spy-ware following each visit to the web.

By purchasing the "Plus" version, you get an additional feature, "Ad-Watch".Ad-Watch runs in the background similarly to an antivirus program. It stops ad-ware and spy-ware before they have an opportunity to work.Without Ad-Watch, any spy-ware or ad-ware will be active until you run Ad-Aware to remove it.

I still run Ad-Aware on occasion, but by allowing Ad-Watch to run, I have yet to find any spy-ware that has installed itself.Ad-Watch busts it before it has an opportunity to install and run.I enthusiastically recommend this product.

ScanSoft says Dragon is "fully integrated" into Excel. NOT! It doesn't know about named-ranges or sheet names. It's difficult to select blocks of cells, and damn-near impossible to enter your own formulas. Docs say you can use "compute end formula." Absolute, pure BS!

In Outlook, docs say the command "Open Mail" and "close mail". Dragon hears "Open Male" and "close male." Sorry, the message doesn't open! Docs: "Check Mail", or "get Mail," results: doesn't work.

Using Internet Explorer is almost impossible, at first. After a few hours, you can almost navigate dual web site.

Great toy. But it does NOT work as advertised. Save your money! If you're not disabled, and have no need for voice recognition software, caveat emptor!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Like A Great Arm And No Hands...
    To Whomever it may concern:

This is a great tool. I would love to have one. I think many people would, especially if they write a lot. Still, I am a MacIntosh user and cannot use this platform. ...or so I think.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst product
After installation, the product wouldn't even launch - says dns files not found. I tried calling them and looked into their website - NO USE. I spent 3 hours for NOTHING.

This is a worst product with NO Support. I will return this DAMN product and demand my money back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent recognition but commands need work
I purchased the software because it's getting very difficult to use the keyboard and mouse due to a neuromuscular disease. I have the software for two days now and it is doing well for replacing the keyboard. I have what Doctors call a "thick speech" and people have a hard time understand what I'm saying. The teaching tool is working well, and already the program understands me almost as well as people.

The one thing I was hoping would be a little better, is the commands. Navigating around windows without using a mouse is difficult and it doesn't work well with Microsoft Outlook unless you have a professional version. It's good with Internet Explorer but surfing the Web with other browsers is rather difficult if you're trying to avoid using a mouse. It would be nice if you could download program specific commands from a web site or create your own macros.

    My final thoughts,
This is proving to be a valuable tool for replacing the keyboard, but I am finding myself searching for a different method to replace the mouse.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bug Free but Tedious
I appear to be the oddball, because my experience with Dragon Naturally Speaking has been the opposite of the other reviews on the site.

The good news is that I'm running it on Windows XP (Home) and have NOT had any of the technical problems mentioned by others, although the software is resource intensive (it can slow the system down). But I didn't expect anything else from voice recognition software, which involves a very complex task.

The bad news is that, after properly training the software for an extended period and using it for a couple of months, I've pretty much stopped using it because it is tedious to use. The error rate is still between 5-10%. Although that doesn't sound like a lot, it means every 10th or 20th word is wrong. What's more, the errors are not always obvious (e.g. they are real words and are not detected by spell check, but they make your writing sound like you're on serious drugs). The result is that proofing your work is a tedious task at best.

I type fairly quickly (50-60 WPM) and with reasonable accuracy. My typos are easily identified by spell check (I don't tend to insert the wrong, but correctly spelled, word the way Naturally Speaking does!). Ergo, I can type and proof faster than I can dictate and proof, which defeats the main reason I bought Naturally Speaking (to speed up my reply to sometimes voluminous email correspondence).

My conclusion: The "state of the art" for voice recognition is not yet where it needs to be to pay off for a halfway decent typist. On the other hand, if you're a poor typist or have a physical handicap that makes typing difficult or impossible, it might be worth a try. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Clunky Upgrade
There is a definite downturn with this new release- screen draws are noticeably slower and simply starting the application takes longer. The new interface has the task-based side bar found in newer applications, but it adds no benefit while robbing me of valuable screen space - the old toolbar at the top was much better. I applaud Symantec's fixing odd behaviors (non-invasive, such as strange 'quick' popups to handle internal routines, etc), and I appreciate their attempt at making the user experience more consistent and smooth, which they did, but the overall value of the product has dropped. For the core features I use (connect, control, end session) the performance has dropped- and I have no need for the new features. I'll be selling this on ebay... right after I go back to the odd but faster 10.5.

1-0 out of 5 stars I regret upgrading
I upgraded several systems from 10.5 to 11.0 and have found that the new version does not work nearly as well as the old version. My biggest complaint is that in cases where the host computer has a dynamically updating screen, the remote computer may not receive updates at all making it look as if the host computer is either stuck or is still processing something when it has in fact finished.

There is an interface change that added a navigation panel to the left of the remote display that oftentimes makes the entire window too large thereby forcing me to scroll through windows that I didn't have to scroll through using the old version. The addition of the 'Remote Management' tools would be helpful if they worked properly. The command line tool very often didn't respond properly at all, making it not worth attempting to use when I can just open a command window through the remote window.

I am going to have to go through the extra work of uninstalling 11.0 and reinstalling 10.5 on several systems. Very disappointing!

2-0 out of 5 stars Step backward from 10.5
I regret spending the money for the "upgrade" from 10.5. PcA 11 no longer shows time remaining for file transfer, nor does it show transfer speed. It hangs, giving a "Cannot create directory" message for no discernable reason, where there was no problem with 10.5 If 11 has some advantages, I find nothing that does me any good. It has a different interface, but I don't see that as either better or worse. I'm going to remove it and go back to 10.5. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review

There's more to the Internet than surfing sites, downloading music, andbuying stuff. Procomm Plus, a must-have shareware application back in thepre-Web days, still fulfills its functions of old, allowing users to telnet(which is useful for, say, configuring a router), dial in to BBS's (bulletinboard systems for the uninitiated; these used to be the equivalent of personalWeb pages and download servers), and more. In addition, Procomm Plus is apowerful terminal emulator, offering support for three dozen terminals. It alsofeatures a fax applet, FTP ability, an e-mail program, and even a Usenet newsreader.

Even for all its functionality, Procomm Plus isn't for the faint of heart. Itsinterface, consisting of pull-down menus and unlabeled icons with commands thatare identified only by mouse-over tips, is a throwback to the days whenuser-friendliness was a rarity. Its terminal emulation, mail, FTP, Usenet, andother functions reside in different executables, yet you can make system-widesetup changes from most of them. ASPECT, its scripting language, is powerful, and a handful of sample scripts are included--but manually editing scripts isakin to full-on programming.

Even with its daunting interface, Procomm Plus is a diesel-powered machine forbusinesses and power users alike. Its fax applet is surprisingly robust, andeven includes a number of cover sheets. Its Internet e-mail module is sparsecompared to Outlook or Eudora, but it gets the job done with simple grace.Likewise, its FTP applet won't threaten to put CuteFTP out of business, but itallows you to move files easily to and from servers.

Mainframe-based businesses will love its boisterous terminal emulationcapabilities. It emulates dozens of terminals, including popular WYSE 50, 60,and 100; VT 220 and 230; IBM 3101, 3160, and 3270; and more. It allows users todetermine how the terminal is displayed, scrolled, and otherwise used. Theterminal emulation applet also allows power modem users to punch in manual ATcommands.

Merging high-performance business applications with a robust suite of Internetfunctions, Procomm Plus 4.8 draws its strength from its range of abilities. Itsoutstanding terminal emulation and big bundle of applets make it a terrificutility--for the right users. --Joel Durham, Jr.

A special note to Windows XP users: Procomm Plus 4.8 is advertised for Windows9x, NT, and 2000; XP is not included on this list. We only experienced oneproblem under XP: it crashed while downloading newsgroups. However, check withSymantec before you purchase Procomm Plus 4.8 for XP. ... Read more
