ACT is a great concept and has moved the CRM world. BUT it has changed little in the last 10 years and desperately requires a new release. The three most important updates required are a) better e-mail - integration with Outlook would be fine, b) much improved mass maintenance, lookups, and reporting and c) a more stable and robust data platform. Continued reliance on what are essentially DB 2 files (anyone out there remember them?) is silly and is the reason that file corruption and data loss is endemic with ACT. ACT is a goldmine for BEST and it's being milked, but one wonders how much money is being invested in improving the product. A little attention to fixing the product's many problems would give a significant boost to the software. I have to believe that a mass upgrade from version 6 would also be good for BEST's profits.

These problems have existed for a long, long time, and users have waited for the ACT people to resolve them. 6.0 was an exercise in half measures and disappointment. For that reason, we've come to believe that BEST Software has broken trust with us as their customers. They have broken trust with their certified consultants by being unresponsive to them. Many of us have concluded that they don't deserve our business anymore. We're looking for others that do. And when we find our solution, we'll buy through Amazon, a company that constantly tries to provide better service and a better platform for its customers.

ACT! 6.0 for 2004 includes ACT! For PalmOS for free. Why couldn't I have learned by reading the product description on Amazon.com BEFORE the product arrived at my house? I didn't appreciate paying for extra/unneeded copies of ACT! for PalmOS when it was included for free in the main product.

Pure Crap! Be aware that Amazon offers a great price, but the product comes with zero support. Upon receiving ACT, I intstalled it and tried to sync the database with others in our office. With no success after following the on-screen and manual directions, I called Best Software to ask for help.

There first question was "Where did you purchase the product?" When I told their rep that I purchased it from Amazon, she scolded me for not purchasing direct from the company. She then told me that ACT purchased through Amazon has no support and it would cost $199.00 to sign up for a one year support contract.

This is the first time I have ever purchased software from a company and had them refuse to answer a simple question in the first week of trying to use their product.

Over all, a very poor experience and I am sure we will not waist our time purchasing another product from Best Software. Simply calling a company "Best" does not insure that they will live up to their billing.

I like this software because of the features that are very important for my business. I recommend this software if you are not using Outlook or any other contact management software. Unfortunately it is price is a bit high.

If you want to store contact information, using the old pen and paper is better than ACT! We have an ACT database storing roughly 3,000 contacts. It is EXTREMELY slow. Integration with Outlook 2000 or 2003 (havent tried xp) is just about inoperable. I recommend that if you have to the tools and knowledge to create your own contact database, do it. I used this software to create a handbook for the company where I am employed. I'm always pressed for time, and Policies Now was simple and quick. I created an entire handbook in no time. I receive email updates on changing HR laws from Knowlegde Point, which is helpful.

The software also allows you to create your own inclusions that apply specifically to your own business. The user can create the handbook as HTML, text, or a Word document, which is great.

Overall, I was very satisfied.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY: requires "activation"!!!!
I guess Best Software is ignoring all the flack that happened with
other companies (remember Intuit's TurboTax 2003?) and decided to
implement an activation scheme with their software. I, as a
legitimate purchaser, am being punished. If I want to upgrade my
computer, it is unknown whether I will be "allowed" to do so by
Best. If I'm still trying to use this application in a few years
when Best no longer supports it, I can't imagine them allowing me
to reactivate it in case my computer crashes, I want to upgrade,
etc.

Note that this activation scheme is not noted anywhere on the box.
You first find out about it when you break the seal and read page
TWENTY-TWO of the "Getting Started Guide" (probably because they
know if they'd lose sales if they put on the box "You can only use
the software once you register with us, and then if you crash or
up upgrade your machine you might not be able to use it after
that, depending").

As I do much work in the field, I need to have a copy on my laptop
in addition to the one on my desktop. I do not use the two copies
simultaneously, yet this appears to be prohibited. So, for a
program I *PAID* for, this is turning out to be a poor deal.

I will now look at other business accounting packages to see if
they offer similar features as PT, without a brain-dead revenue
maximization scheme (i.e., activation). I'd prefer to stick with
PT, as I like many of the features they provide and have been a
customer for many years, but if Best insists upon treating EVERY
ONE OF ITS CUSTOMERS like THIEVES and CRIMINALS, then I'm
switching. Fortunately, they offer a no-risk 60 day money-back
guarantee, so they WILL be giving me my money back. ... Read more

WinWay Resume is simply outstanding. This program definitely does the trick. It's easy to use, extremely straightforward, and had a pre-made resume (I'm a cost accountant) that I was able to adapt to properly show my experience. And it has a Resume Auditor which is incredibly cool. It found all kinds of mistakes in my resume - and I'm sure glad it did. Not just typos, but things like date gaps between jobs. The tutorials were really helpful, too. It teaches you how to negotiate a better salary and how to present yourself during an interview, which turned out to be a good thing for me since it's been 12 years since I had to interview. Anyways, I recommend it wholeheartedly!

I just got Winway Resume Deluxe 10.0 and I must say it really helped me put together a beautiful looking resume. It helped me to write my resume quickly and more professionally than I EVER could have done on my own. And the Resume Auditor feature worked like a charm! It's kind of like a spell checker for your resume and it found some big problems woth my resume that otherwise would have just gone unnoticed (by at least me but maybe not my prospective employer). Much better than I anticipated. Frustrated at first, because I too could not import my resume from a MS Word document, & had to enter the data myself (poor me). BUT, it is was well worth the effort! Pleasantly surprised with this OUTSTANDING product that was worth every penny. My only regret is not using this software sooner. One caveat: my computer is rather new, and I have a very fast Internet connection. Therefore, I am not sure I can recommend this product to everyone.

Package clearly states it imports resumes. When you get to that part it tells you that if you want to import it will have to be plain text (i.e. no Word docs), with bullets and formatting removed. Well, that's pretty much just not importing.

Secondly, the program hangs on XP all the time. I have a brand new machine, with patches. And I updated Resume Maker right off. Still hangs.

Really, this is a waste of money. I'm giving up on it and going back to Word. All the other 'features' (sample resumes, etc.) can be found at many websites.

The new ResumeMaker 11.0 is very good, I especially like the interview segment because it gives concrete examples. I work in a busy high school and this allows students to work independently. I also like the fact that you can now go in and edit fonts, spacing etc. As I have said this is the best product on the market. It still amazes me that the price is so reasonable. Our students always have the most professional looking resumes to present to employers when using this software program.

The new ResumeMaker 11.0 is awesome, I especially like the interview segment because it gives concrete examples. I work in a busy high school and this allows students to work independently. I came to this site to leave a A+++ review on this product, and before I did I saw some negative comments from other people who had written how disappointed they were.. You know I have been using computer software for a lot of years, and all I can say is these bad reviews must be from people who don't have a clue.. Not only has ResumeMaker been super easy to use, but it landed me a job within a week!!

I guess you just can't please everybody, but then there are those who would complain about getting out of bed in the morning.. In fact I had purchased another product called Winway Deluxe (Resume Program)beore this and was so dissopointed I gave it away... After talking to a saleman at a software store, he had stated ResumeMaker Pro. was the only one they hear positive feedback from satisfied customers, so I bought a copy. Boy am I glad I had talked to a person who sells software for a living, and could give me straight up adive..

I currently use Ver. 2004 and have not upgraded to v. 2005 but I can say that I love this software.It is inexpensive and does everything you need it to do.

I only took one accounting class (hated it) almost 15 years ago so I knew very little about how to keep my own books.I just started my own business and thought I should have some formal record of my financials even if my accountant would have to clean it up later.Simply accounting had wonderful tutorials on CD (included) and I was able to go directly to what area I needed help with.I have to admit that I had to start over with a new company a couple of times because I messed up some entries, but that was because I am not an accountant and didn't want a bunch of adjustments to correct entries.

I read the other review and yes, you do get a pop-up window that asks if you are sure you want to enter something older than 7 days, but you can change that in the options.I don't have a lot of paperwork yet so I probably enter documents in maybe once or twice a month and I have NO problems with these infrequent entries.

I even created my own personalized invoices, POs, receipts, etcthat match my letterhead.I can email or print these out for clients.It sends emails through Outlook.

The best part is the wizard.When you set up a new company, the wizard will ask you what type of business you are running and then develop an account list based on that.I was able to add and delete my own as I went along.

If you believe you can be taught accounting, give this program a try.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to use and unforgiving of errors
I've used Simply Accounting for my small business for 12 months. It is a decent basic accounting package with all the features you would expect. However, it is hard to work with and extremely unforgiving.

The first problem is that Simply Accounting assumes that you will always enter all transactions in ascending date order, and that you use the program at least every week. The root cause is Simply Accounting's concept of the "current session date". The program complains if you enter any transaction that is more than 7 days before or after this date. It also complains if you then try to move the session date to another date more than 7 days away -- as if this were some major accounting heresy. So if you are going through your paperwork catching up on your accounts at the end of the month, this gets incredibly annoying very quickly.

Secondly, if you ever have the temerity to enter one transaction that precedes any other, you get another warning that the earlier transaction will affect any reports you might have run. Gee, there's a surprise. There is no way to turn this annoying warning off. So you'd better order all your paperwork by date, or else suffer death by a thousand clicks to dismiss this warning message every time.

Thirdly, if you make a mistake entering a transaction, there is no way to go back and correct the transaction. You can reverse transactions, but this means adding a second transaction to back out the old one and a third for the corrected transaction. I understand that this is important for audit trail purposes, but make it possible to collapse the audit trail into a single transaction. If you're just fat fingered like me or forget to change the date from the last transaction (this happens to me a lot), your accounts become littered with incorrect transactions and their reversals -- three transactions for each mistake. If renders any kind of reporting on account transactions almost useless, because the debit and credit columns are swelled by (irrelevant) transaction errors and their corrections. I'm a one-man business -- I don't need an audit trail to show that I messed up the date of a payment or invoice. It obscures the view of how well/badly my business is actually doing.

The user interface compounds these problems. For most transactions, you want to enter the date, the payee or payor, the amount(s), and the account(s) to book the expense/revenue against. However, the forms are not laid out in this order on the screen. You'll need to navigate by mousing and clicking extensively to get to these fields and enter the relevant information. This is why it's so very easy to get the wrong date for a transaction -- not only is the date field not the first on the form, you need to press Tab more than 6 times to get there from the payee/payor field. To enter the account efficiently, you'll need to have memorized its 4 digit code. No, you can't start typing the first few characters of the name of the account and have the software auto-complete. If you click on the pick-list of accounts, they are ordered by account code and not alphabetically, which makes it vastly harder to find the account you want to use.

Finally, the software assumes you are fluent in accounting jargon, terminology and practices. It claims to have a mode where it uses "non accounting terms" but this is more confusing than using the actual terms themselves. Now that I have my copy of Works Suite installed I can't see how anyone can be dissatisfied with it. The copy I obtained through Amazon's "Used and New" section was definitely no upgrade and installed quite happily. I didn't get the retail packaging and the manual was on-line, but the price was trivial. And now I see that buying the full retail package through Amazon direct is almost as cheap.

What should be stated clearly is that you get a full copy of Word 2002 (XP), which is almost the same as Word 2003. Also, you're now eligible to buy Microsoft Office at an upgrade price. Either of these two advantages can save you hundreds of dollars.

That's in addition to getting four applications that are useful every day - Encarta, Money, Streets and Trips, and Picture It! Although Works itself is maybe not as strong as I'd need (I'm used to Office), all the programs show considerable signs of features and design for ease of use.

I've used other examples of the programs here (including Photoshop for picture manipulation) and all the Microsoft offerings really show up well. If they lack any features they make up for it with ease of use. You can even load the data files for Encarta onto your hard disk to run without the DVD or CD-ROM.

Whatever your understanding of computers this is a great addition to your programs, especially at this price.

5-0 out of 5 stars There's a bargain here - and it's not OpenOffice
It's remarkable that anyone would recommend Open Office. The sole thing in favor of it is that it's free. It's a poorly executed attempt at an alternative to Microsoft Office, but it misses out all but the most basic features. In addition it is a CPU hog, often using 100 percent of the processor.

Works Suite has a whole bunch of programs that don't come with the typical Office suite, and they're often the best of their class. The cost of them (Money, Streets and Trips, Picture it! and Encarta) would come to more than the cost of Works Suite. In addition you get a Works program that has been designed to be easy to use, plus what is arguably the world's best Word processor.

Unless you're locked into an ABM (Anything But Microsoft) view this is a great bargain, and if you don't want Microsoft take a look at the WordPerfect suites.

I can't understand where people are getting the idea that this is an upgrade. I searched Microsoft's site and there is no mention of an upgrade version.

You can use an installation of Microsoft Works to get Microsoft Office at upgrade prices, but there appears to be no qualification to use Works itself.

The only caveat is that certain sellers in the "used and new" section are selling OEM copies at very low prices. The OEM copies do not provide tech support unless you bought a computer from the company named on the CD or DVD case. However, you can (as I have done) installed an OEM copy and used all the software including Microsoft Word without any problems.

Again, given in my review I believe this to be one of the bargains of software, I don't see any reason why this shouldn't be on your computer. I am about to sell my computer and I am buying a new copy for my new computer. I'm sure the person who buys my old computer will think it a bargain that so much software is legally included.

Nowhere in AMAZON.COM's write-up of this product is it mentioned that this is an upgrade that cannot be used unless you already
have certain Microsoft software on your PC. Maybe most MS home users already know this, but still it should be shown as prominently as the system requirements. The write-up did not give me enough information to make a good decision. I will probably not buy software from Amazon.com again.

If you considered this suite upon the merits of just two of the programs contained inside, the price is a real deal. For me, Money 2004 and Streets and Trips were the two programs I really wished to get. I was not disappointed. Microsoft really needs to be commended for the excellent work they have done in selecting some very useful programs to put together. On the other hand, Word comes with 500+ useful templates and that also made the suite a wonderful deal. I enjoy the Works program itself because it is simple and functional. I don't need much more for home use. If I was a corporate user, I would buy a corporate license I suppose, but this is a great combination. It is also discounted now. Give it a try.
