Justified Upgrade for some, but not all
Word 2003 is more powerful than ever. Unfortunately, most of the new features are aimed primarily towards large business. As a result, many end-users simply won't need them (or be able to use them). The users who will benefit most from upgrading are corporate users or users purchasing bundles with new PCs.

Pros:

Instant Messaging support is now integrated with Office applications. However, only MSN messenger is used. Users who predominantly use Yahoo, trillian, jabber, or ICQ will not find any utility in this feature, without signing up for a messenger account.

The user interface has changed for the better, and matches the Windows XP interface better. Personally, I like it. Also, fonts are rendered better, and consequently documents will look better on laptops (no more jagged edges).

The Reading Layout feature splits the text into a two column format for easier reading (think newspaper).

If you have Microsoft Server and SharePoint services installed on your network, you can share and track changes to word documents. Nice feature, but requires a significant investment on server software.

When typing an hypertext link, word no longer reformats the font of the URL.

Cons:

Product activation, which requires network access.

All of the Office applications now have a blended help system that first checks help files online first, before getting local help files.

XML is useless for end users. Programmers who use Word to write XML will find that Word no longer tries to autocorrect much of the XML, but you will still have the annoying red underline on many of your XML tags because the spellchecker flags them as misspelled.

Still, I think it makes a worthy upgrade for 97/2000 users, but XP users will find the expense difficult to justify. More specifically, if you are an end user without a lot of Microsoft back end software installed on your network (Windows 2000/2003 Server, SharePoint services, etc.) I would think very carefully before upgrading.

It Only Gets Better
I've bought all versions of Microsoft Word and by far this version is the best. For starters, the taskbar has links that help you out in situations that would take longer for lack of knowledge. The visuals are amazing, nice, nice! You get the same smart tags unfortunately. But you can adjust any inconveniences if you read Microsoft's book. There is a book out that explains step by step how to use Microsoft Word 2003. The name of the book is Step by Step Microsoft Office Word 2003. It's a beginner-Intermediate book. It helps to become familiar with your software before you critique it.

The new installation is by far much better than the upgrade. I bought the upgrade and once you put the CD-ROM on the drive it gives you the option of installing it as a new installation or as an upgrade. I recommend the new. When I want to change the office assistant I no longer have to put the CD again on the drive. Everything is on the computer.

This won't slow down your computer. I noticed my computer runs just as fast once I installed this program.

I wasn't too thrilled with the older versions but this one was a great investment. Very expensive but well worth it. Microsoft continues to rise to the top and these office programs are just the beginning. I am very excited for next years new Windows program that is scheduled to come. Security is enhanced in this version. Documents can be made private. There are other security enhancements but I can't really go over each one since that would make this review endless. There are a few added elements on saving. If you get a power outage or your computer shuts off for some unseen incident you don't lose your work. There is a way of having all documents backed up as you type. That is definitely a vast improvement.

I haven't read the entire book that explains this software but from my personal experience writing letters and using it this version is much better than the 2002 or 2000. A good note is that I didnt' have to do Office Updates once I installed it. I also didn't have to register my software since the upgrade new installation did all the work for me. There is 1 little change from the 2000 but similiar to the 2002. You have to enter a product key to activate it. If you don't plan on using the Internet with this program then stick to the 2000. The 2002 and 2003 versions requrie product activation.

There is a link on the tasks pane that provides technical assistance and takes you to the Microsoft help pages that I found very helpful unlike previous versions.

Don't hesitate or feel undecided buy this product if you are concerned for security online as you type letters, if you like fancy looking visuals, and if you want to be on top of the game! Why settle for less, get the best! Microsoft is sure to always come up with good things. Yes, they stumble a few times down the line but they pick up and gain momentum. The Best
I first bought the Enigma's Spy Hunter, but its performance was so disappointing plus poor support that I gave it away. On the other hand Spyware , blocks spyware in real time, has the biggest definitions list of spywares, fast scanning with remaining time, good support, inexpensive that was the best choice.

If you want the best this is it.

Quick and Easy to Use
This product requires no effort to use. It installs quickly and is immediately ready to sweep through your files. On the initial sweep through, it corrected a serious problem caused by adware. When it reviewed the files on my kids computer, it identified 24 adware and similar programs that had been installed with some of the web packages my kids use. The programs are quarantined for now but both our computers are finally working the way we need them to.

A good product just got better
Spysweeper by Webroot is now at version 3.0.

The good news........Webroot provided me with V3 under their
ONE YEAR of free upgrades AND updates.

Version 2 was good, but version 3 has a lot of cool new features, like all the new "shields".

So, when some Mal-ware program tries to change your browser home-page, an alert comes up and asks you if you authorized such a change.

Other shields include a HIJACK shield, IE tracking, IE favorites.

One especially neat one is the STARTUP ITEMS shield.
Before a program becomes a startup item, this shield pops up and asks you for authorization.

NOTE 1 : At this point in time, no single anti-spyware product appears to protect you from ALL potential mal-ware threats.
In fact, I have 4 different, FULL VERSION, products.
I alternate between these 4 programs almost daily.

There is a major amount of detection overlap but not a COMPLETE overlap. Each of the 4 programs finds stuff that the others didn't.

NOTE 2: I've debated folks in newsgroups about mal-ware detection s/w. Several folks comment that since there are FREE s/w packages, so why would anyone PAY for s/w?

First of all, remember, no single package detects every s/w threat out there (that I am aware of).

IMHO, the most indepth ones are NOT free s/w packages.
However, the freeware ones are good to an extent.

As for my personal PC's security, I use the following s/w packages: 1 firewall, 1 virus-scanner and 4 anti-spyware packages.

NOTE 3: Watch out for wolves in sheep's clothing!

There are several "self-proclaimed" ANTI-spyware packages that actually INSTALL mal-ware onto your pc! You in fact, are shooting yourself in the foot by installing such programs.

Saves me money

Beautiful, powerful, easy to use
I love this. I've played with several desktop planetarium products including Red Shift, TheSky and even other Starry Night offerings, and this is the one. It's simple to use -- like a web browser, really rich, informative. I'm using it with both my 8 year old and my 12 year old and it's just perfect.

Note that in addition to the basic astronomy software, a thing called Deep Space Explorer is in there too-- it's like an encyclopedia meets a space-ship simulator. Very cool.

Well worth the upgrade from the free version.
I first used the free version of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE, and found it did a great job finding and removing ad-ware and spy-ware.The trouble was, I would find new spy-ware following each visit to the web.

By purchasing the "Plus" version, you get an additional feature, "Ad-Watch".Ad-Watch runs in the background similarly to an antivirus program.It stops ad-ware and spy-ware before they have an opportunity to work.Without Ad-Watch, any spy-ware or ad-ware will be active until you run Ad-Aware to remove it.

I still run Ad-Aware on occasion, but by allowing Ad-Watch to run, I have yet to find any spy-ware that has installed itself.Ad-Watch busts it before it has an opportunity to install and run.I enthusiastically recommend this product.

Great language checker catches legally inappropriate wording

Super! McAfee is BACK!
I'm a Norton user, have been since 2000.Studies were posted showing this was a better product.Next Windows XP had problems with McAfee and Norton beat them to the contract, developing a certified product first.HOWEVER, Norton is now the slacker.While on top, sucking up the money of millions, Norton is turning it's attention to other things.I love McAfee, now.Norton AntiVirus 2003 & 2004 will not catch the W32Spybot.Norton Internet Secrutiy will slow down your network, not allow you to EVER turn off Norton Internet Security, and cannot be uninstalled (must rip it out of the registry).In effect they take over your PC like NetZero, AOL, and much like a trojan.When I bought McAfee 9.0 2005 to replace Norton 2004 it caught the following:
- (2) Trojans: Exploit MhtRedir.gen
- (1) Trojan: Exploit CodeBase.gen
- (1) Virus: EICAR test file
Also, McAfee is very price considerate to their coupon people(...).I don't know what took them (4) years, but they are back in my book.

Rebate woes
I thought about going on with a tirade about how McAfee offers rebates on their products that never arrive. But too many people have beaten me to the punch. There are whole websites devoted to people who spent six months trying to get a promised rebate from them. My story is not at all original, I bought the product and carefully included everything the rebate asked for, mailed the whole shebang in and waited...and waited...and waited and FINALLY received a letter in reply saying that my claim was rejected because of missing form xxx. "I'll have to take your word on that boys as you kept all the forms that I sent to yourselves instead of returning them with this note!!"
I could have fought them over this but why bother it's only $20 and I have no leverage.
Instead I'll just have to content my self with this little tirade...Oh and perhaps post alink to a company that lets you download a *FREE VERSION** of their commercial anti-virus software. [...]

At least it works this time
I had given up McAfee back with Version 7.0 when I could not get it to work and received -- let's say less than adequate support.I went to Norton Antivirus & Personal Firewall with version 2004 when my OEM installed McAfee on my new desktop and OEM Norton on my laptop were ready to be upgraded.

The Norton software worked quite well for about 7 months.When I downloaded the updates around the first of Feb 05 from Symantec, I could not stop my laptop from going to the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).After completely giving up on being able to get the Symantec to run on my laptop, I decided to give the McAfee Antivirus 2005 9.0 a try.At least it works and does not crash my system (yet).It does lack some of the intelligence of the Norton product.The Norton product had a nice feature to create rules to help recognize activities on the laptop that were not malicious.This kept it from constantly stopping or flagging activities that were ok.The McAfee lacks this degree of intelligence.

But, like I said, it runs.Which is far more than I can say for the 2/05 updates to Symantec's Norton products.

I may give my Norton a try again in a month or two to see if Symantec has fixed the problems.But I will not hold my breath.

I would prefer to have Microsoft get into the Antivirus and robust firewall arena so that we can have a product that we can at least have more confidence in its ability to play nice with the Windows kernal.

Maybe it's good stuff (?)included printed material isn't
I bought a copy of 9.0 locally because I've always used McAfee and online updating is a bad joke with my connection. The first version, whatever it was, came preinstalled on my Gateway and came with no print documentation. Next up I bought a copy of 6.0 and got the print stuff, no real problems if a guy would just read directions I guess. I updated that one online but made mistakes (their system wasn't clear enough for me and the download took too much time)and decided to go and buy software this time based on the reputation I'd heard McAfee had.
I was pleased to read, on the box, that just about any PC out there could run this thing but I was dismayed to find next to no printed material in the box. The box itself almost has more info than the sorry little scrap of paper inside. Quick Start Guide they all it and that's about all you get, a quick run through on preparing your PC and installation of the product. I'm not very computer literate and this thing seems to be written for Windows XP (I'm using '98). Any real operations information seems to be contained on the CD-ROM (so you'd better not throw that away), I'm not entirely sure I can figure out how to open it up- I want it in print. Another thing I don't like is that the software seems to be autogeared to search and update on it's own- not one word in print anywhere about that.
Next time I may just see about using somebody else's software.

Don't buy this piece of crap.
This software gave me only problems, I have Win98SE,My computer was working fine before the installation of McAfee 9.0, It caused my computer to lock up every time when scaning for virus. After restarting my computer this antivirus was forbiding access to several files vital for a the computer to run, I couldn't uninstall it because did not let me open my control panel. So my computer became unuseful. I was able to start in safe mode and disable the crap. Then I used the manual scan option, it found a virus call W32\FunLove.gen it said that the files have been cleaned. I ran the manual scan again and it found the same virus in the same files previously cleaned!!. I did it 3 times and it was always finding the same virus. What a nightmare. I installed it in another computer with Win98 in it, did the same thing. Is unvelibable that a new software can perfome some badly, it is a rip off. Besides all the support of McAfee is terrible there is no 1-800 numbers and you have to pay by the minute to talk to technicians. Don't buy this crap!! ... Read more

This is a horrible operating system!
Windows 2000 does not run any computer games at all! If you want a operating system that runs Computer games, I recommend Windows 98 or XP. Do not buy Windows 2000. Its a waste of money. You will regret if you buy it.

Access 2000 is incredible
I've programmed for 6 years in visual basic and oracle. I purchased my copy of access 2000 and continue building applications faster and better. I love the development environment for creating forms, reports, and vb code in access 2000. Its so easy and no class structures.

If you are use to MicroSoft products ...
This rating system requires that I choose from 1-5 stars. I actually selected the "-", but it would not publish the review.

If you are use to MicroSoft products, this is an improvement over the norm. However, to get a full functional server (security, e-mail, HTML, ...) with MicroSoft technology the cost is in the thousands and when you try to run all the services on a single server ... well, its not pretty. Go with UNIX - it works.

What a great OS!
I upgraded to this from Windows 98, and I never had experience running a server before. From the moment I put in the CD I knew I would love this OS. It is very easy to use, and within a day I had a http and ftp server running perfectly (I had no experence setting them up before). This OS is also much more stable than Win 95/98/ME. It has only crashed on me a few times in 4 months! The only bad thing about this OS is that it can not run any DOS program, so this is not the ideal OS for old skool gamers. All in all this OS is definetly worth the price.

You'll Never Go Back...
I've used Windows 95 and 98 for the past 5 years. Both crashed relatively frequently - of course, I thought ALL operating systems did that.

Until now.

I bought Windows 2000 Advanced Server and installed it. Differences were immediately apparent - quick, painless startups, much better memory allocation, more virtual memory, and much more. But I didn't understand how good Win2K is until, about 2 weeks later, I realized that the computer hadn't frozen at all during those weeks!

Whenever I use Windows 98 now, I'm amazed that I managed to get anything done. I've had less crashes using Windows 2000 in a month than I used to have in a day of Windows 98. ... Read more
